Dame Wendy Richard MBE please!
Miss Brahms. . . Are You Free?
An Interesting and Informative Autobiography From her early years as the only child of somewhat nomadic parents in the licensing trade through to her courageous (and successful) battle in 1996 with breast cancer and her recent MBE award, Wendy is very frank and upfront in chronicling both her personal life and her career. She tells of her deep love for her parents and how the tragic loss of her father while she was still a child resulted in hardship for her and her mother.Following the deterioration and death of her mother around 1973, Wendy embarked on a series of disastrous relationships (three of which were marriages) that spanned a period of more than twenty years, and Wendy takes us through it all. As an interesting touch, Wendy chronicles the story of Pauline (the character whom she has portrayed on the soap opera Eastenders since 1985) at the same time as she chronicles her own life story.Pauline has been a huge part of Wendy's life and she seems to feel a real attachment to the character.I am not a soap fan and have never seen Eastenders; nevertheless, Wendy's own life reads so much like a soap opera itself that the parallel story is somewhat appropriate, and I rather enjoyed her account of it. The book contains 24 pages of photos (colour and b/w).There are a few stills from AYBS?, but most of the photos are from Wendy's own collection--photos of her parents, of her as a child, of friends and fellow cast members, of her precious pooch named Shirley (Wendy is a committed animal lover!), and of her at various functions and events. In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this autobiography--so much so that I had trouble putting it down.Wendy comes across as a very down-to-earth and caring person, and one can practically hear that distinctive (and delightful) "Cockney" accent as one reads! When I finished the book, I felt, quite honestly, like I'd just finished a lovely letter from a dear friend.Very highly recommended to fans of AYBS? or of Eastenders. ... 2. Sam Richards's Civil War Diary: A Chronicle of the Atlanta Home Front by Samuel Pearce Richards | |

Editorial Review Product Description Sam was a Unionist until 1860, when his sentiments shifted in favor of the Confederacy. However, as he wrote in early 1862, he had "no ambition to acquire military renown and glory." Likewise, Sam chafed at financial setbacks caused by the war and at Confederate policies that seemed to limit his freedom. Such conflicted attitudes come through even as Sam writes about civic celebrations, benefit concerts, and the chaotic optimism of life in a strategically critical rebel stronghold. He also reflects with soberness on hospitals filled with wounded soldiers, the threat of epidemics, inflation, and food shortages. A man of deep faith who liked to attend churches all over town, Sam often comments on Atlanta's religious life and grounds his defense of slavery and secession in the Bible. Sam owned and rented slaves, and his diary is a window into race relations at a time when the end of slavery was no longer unthinkable. Perhaps most important, the diary conveys the tenor of Sam's family life. Both Sam and his wife, Sallie, came from families divided politically and geographically by war. They feared for their children's health and mourned for relatives wounded and killed in battle. The figures in Sam Richards's Civil War Diary emerge as real people; the intimate experience of the Civil War home front is conveyed with great power. Customer Reviews (1)

Great book for V:DA The book itself is a fun read, not just filled with rules but flavour to make the game better. Some of the concepts could be used in any game that uses knights. Well worth the money. My only complaint is the art needed to be a bit better.

Editorial Review Product Description Dying to Get High with Susie Bright on Boing Boing! Warring Wines; ’You Want to Fight?’; Nurse Mary Jane in Santa Cruz High Times interviews the authors Alternet excerpt of the book ("How Pot Became Demonized") Discussion from the Santa Cruz Metro Marijuana as medicine has been a politically charged topic in this country for more than three decades. Despite overwhelming public support and growing scientific evidence of its therapeutic effects (relief of the nausea caused by chemotherapy for cancer and AIDS, control over seizures or spasticity caused by epilepsy or MS, and relief from chronic and acute pain, to name a few), the drug remains illegal under federal law. In Dying to Get High, noted sociologist Wendy Chapkis and Richard J. Webb investigate one community of seriously-ill patients fighting the federal government for the right to use physician-recommended marijuana. Based in Santa Cruz, California, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) is a unique patient-caregiver cooperative providing marijuana free of charge to mostly terminally ill members. For a brief period in 2004, it even operated the only legal non-governmental medical marijuana garden in the country, protected by the federal courts against the DEA. Using as their stage this fascinating profile of one remarkable organization, Chapkis and Webb tackle the broader, complex history of medical marijuana in America. Through compelling interviews with patients, public officials, law enforcement officers and physicians, Chapkis and Webb ask what distinguishes a legitimate patient from an illegitimate pothead, good drugs from bad, medicinal effects from just getting high. Dying to Get High combines abstract argument and the messier terrain of how people actually live, suffer and die, and offers a moving account of what is at stake in ongoing debates over the legalization of medical marijuana. Adventure Calls
A great introduction to Mowat's work I adored Never Cry Wolf, but you often hear that a writerhas one good book in him (or her), and after that it is all downhill. Furthermore, I looked in the library catalog and Mowat had dozens oftitles!I had no idea which ones to try, they had odd titles! So I pickedup this reader, to get an idea which of the titles I might want to pickout. After reading this collection, I decided I wanted to read them all. Mowat is simply the best Canadian writer, and one of the top of thiscentury, in my humble opinion.I have now read five of his books, and mycollection continues to grow.Even the books that are represented aschildren's books (like The Dog Who Wouldn't Be) are a joy to adults aswell. Mowat has the keen eye of observation that Mark Twain had, butwithout the viciousness of the satire... he is much more coy and subtle inhis musings on families and nature. Many of his works involve the Arcticnorth, Saskatchewan, the high seas, and animals; but I have yet to find apoorly written chapter in any of his works. If you want some proof thatMowat is worth buying, pick up this Reader and see for yourself.I read afew small portions to my writers club as samples of excellent writing, andthey loved it.It reads smoothly, like a storyteller would speak, like aGarrison Keilor tale. He is a controversial figure, is my understanding. Purportedly, he is not allowed to visit the United States, because in onebook he claimed to shoot his rifle at overflying US warplanes.Who knowsif this is true; Mowat admits to a bit of freedom in embellishing a tale;which is only right, since it is more fun that way.Don't worry aboutthese details, just read some of it and enjoy it. ... Editorial Review Product Description The book touches on all aspects of copyright management including: the effects of copyright piracy, optimal contractual arrangements between authors and publishers, copyright and antitrust issues, and collective management of copyright. This selection of papers not only shows how fruitful the study of copyright from an economic theory perspective has been, but they also clearly indicate the directions (and analytical tools) that will be of principal interest over the next few years as research in this area flourishes. Both legal scholars specializing in intellectual property and applied economics scholars will find this book of importance, as will organizations dealing with the management and protection of intellectual property rights. The book will also be good reading for any advanced university course dealing with the economics of copyright. |

Beautifully written, lyrical, mythical. This is the first book in the series. Told in text form, it stands easily on its own -- people who don't have or want the graphic art series won't miss anything here. It tells the story of a band of elves who are persecuted out of their home and must find a new one before they die in the desert. Along the way they encounter a new band of elves, hostile trolls, and some even more hostile humans. Sure, they're elves and they're cute, but these elves have courage, heart, and compassion -- they are as accessible and understandable as we are, metaphors for what we wish we could be. Unlike many novelizations of graphic art, this book is accessible to newcomers and doesn't leave out important things. It expands some parts of the graphic art series, adding details like background, private thoughts, and extra interactions.
Really good
