A mystery series with a lot of humor At a Sotheby's auction, Emma meets the Duchess of Wytheham, who pleads with her to help with a family crisis. The Duchess accidentally left the family heirloom, a silver candelabra to be auctioned off and before she could buy it back, it was sold to someone else. She wants Emma to find it, purchase it, and return it to the Wythehams.Emma agrees, figuring this is an easy caper. However, she soon learns that this case is filled with danger that could end her career. While the star is not a typical role model to emulate, she still represents the empowerment of females. She does what she wants on her terms. She accounts to no one, but herself and she never whines or quivers when the situation seems to get out of hand.In other words, Emma is a great role model.Cynthia Smith's latest novel, SILVER AND GUILT, has an intriguing story line and the return of familiar secondary characters. This all adds up to a platinum entry to a golden series. Editorial Review Product Description “Fast . . . clever . . . charming.”—Publishers Weekly “Cool, sardonic, and unflappable Emma Rhodes sparkles diamond bright in Smith’s clever, twisty tales. This highly original series has panache.”—Carolyn Hart “Wonderful! . . . Encore!”—Kerry Greenwood “Brash, beautiful and smart as hell, Smith’s heroine will hook you from page one.”—Leann Sweeney Back in print, the third Emma Rhodes “Private Resolver” novel. Private Resolver Emma Rhodes is used to getting her way. She’s smart. She’s beautiful. And with a 100 percent success rate, it means she handpicks any case she wants. But when Emma boards the train to Hastings, all she wants is a little R&R. Until she meets Juliet Bishop, a baronet’s daughter with a story too good to resist . . . Juliet is getting a divorce. She’s madly in love with her husband, but his jealousy is just too much to bear. Now Emma is out to reunite the two lovebirds. While she’s searching for answers, Emma finds he’s been dumped twice before. What’s more, both of the women have been set up with generous trust funds—by their ex! Now, someone seems to want the two dead. And what used to be an open-and-shut case of love has turned into a full-fledged murder mystery. These high-society mysteries are sure to appeal to fans of Nancy Martin, Marne Davis Kellogg, Kerry Greenwood, and Jane Stanton Hitchcock. Cynthia Smith is the author of five Emma Rhodes novels, all of which Busted Flush Press will reprint. She lives in Florida. Customer Reviews (3)
Some humour, much pretentiousness
More Emma Rhodes, please!!
An unusual PI, a delightful story Emma feels that this situation sounds like something she can easily fix (for a fee). Juliet explains that her spouse Sidney is obsessively jealous of every man she talks to and hence makes life intolerable.Emma agrees to work on the problem. She goes to meet Sidney's former wives to confirm that he drove them off with his insane jealousy. However, not long after she meets with them, one of the ex wives is killed and the other almost murdered. Now Emma has more than just a spousal problem to resolve, she has to uncover who has the motive to kill Sidney's ex-wives. Emma Rhodes is a nineties Emma Peel (Avengers TV show) with the same charm and champagne taste that somehow readers will still find enchanting. Though the fasts-paced story line makes the novel seem a bit far fetched, one becomes engrossed due to the overwhelming personality of the lead protagonist which, in turn, facilitates involvement in Emma's fantasy lifestyle. This is a one of a kind series with universal appeal. All mystery enthusiasts will clamor for more Emma Rhodes stories. Harriet Klausner ... Read more |
