Product Description
Before boundaries were drawn and states were born, there lived a man named Quanah Parker. He was half white and half Comanche but, in his heart, he was one hundred percent Comanche. In his youth, he fought in a battle against the white buffalo hunters known as the "Battle of the Second Adobe Walls." After he witnessed the death of a close Comanche friend, who was killed by a Tonkawa scout of the Texas Rangers, Quanah Parker declared war on Texans. Like his father before him, Quanah Parker was a warrior.Quanah Parker and his band of Kwahadi (Quohada) were the last Comanche tribe to come into Fort Sill Reservation. Wanting to reach the Indians on the reservation, and finding it hard for him and his white officers to do so, General Mackenzie used Quanah Parker as a bridge to link the deep valleys between the Comanche people and white cultures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Between Two Worlds The Legend Of Quanah Parker
Between Two Worlds The Legend Of Quanah Parker is a great read! It is informative, educational and interesting. The coloriful illustrations enhance the book. I would recomend it for children ages nine to thirteen, because its short in length, easily understood, and it repeats it self in various ways to encougage learning. It certainly is not limited to only children adults like myself would find it equally as informative. Sincerely, Cindy

Product Description
Born out of a small research program that began in 1939, the Manhattan Project brought together the cream of the scientific community and the military to create and perfect a weapon more powerful than any the world had known. Racing against time as the war raged in Europe and Asia, and against our enemies, whom we feared were pursuing similar ends, the Project would eventually employ more than 125,000 people and cost a total of over $2 billion—and the entire operation was conducted under a shroud of secrecy, at remote sites around the country.

This groundbreaking book—the first of its kind—collects the writings and thoughts of the original participants in the Manhattan Project, along with pieces by the most important historians and interpreters of the subject. It is a rich and comprehensive compilation of documents, essays, articles, and excerpts from histories, biographies, plays, novels, letters, oral histories, and more, and is the freshest, most multi-faceted exploration yet of the topic. Including material by and about J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Leslie Groves, Klaus Fuchs, Henry Stimson, Vannevar Bush, Harry S. Truman, Niels Bohr, and many other key figures, it also collects the writings and testimony of those in the trenches at the Project, their families, and local eyewitnesses. Finally, the book includes thoughts and concerns about the bomb, set down in the aftermath of its deployment, by politicians, writers, artists, and others who saw that the world would never again be the same.

Assembled with authority and care by the president of the Atomic Heritage Foundation—in cooperation with a team of advising historians that included the Pulitzer Prize-winning Richard Rhodes—The Manhattan Project is an invaluable addition to the historical record as well as a gripping narrative of scientific discovery, military strategy, and moral reflection. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent companion-book for Rhodes' masterful "Making of..."
The first stop for anyone wanting to learn about the Manhattan Project is (and quite possibly always will be) Richard Rhodes' Pulitzer-winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb. For most people, that tome will completely sate their curiosity.

For the insatiable minority that remains, this book is marvellous. Anyone thinking of writing a book with a title like this has to avoid duplicating the work of Mr. Rhodes. Cynthia Kelly simply presents some of the original source material, stitched together with a minimum of analysis, and with an introduction added by Rhodes himself.

It's also a complement to the excellent documentary The Day After Trinity. One of the main narrators in the video, Robert Serber, describes their hilariously-futile attempts to sow disinformation around the gin goints of Santa Fe. In the book here we get the same story told from his wife's viewpoint, to great effect.

The book doesn't use rose-coloured glasses: it adequately covers the rather shoddy treatment of Oppenheimer after the war, but it does skimp on some areas that I would like to see more about, like Oppenheimer's rather shoddy treatment of his one-time friend Haakon Chevalier. And it also spends exactly two pages going into one of the few areas of the whole story that perhaps still deserves a volume to itself: the very long delay between Einstein's letter to FDR explaining that the Germans were probably working on an atomic bomb (August 1939), and Vannevar Bush's letter to FDR announcing the Project finally at "full speed" (March 1942). Eugene Wigner describes the early days of the project as like "swimming in syrup." Leo Szilard estimates that unnecessary delays delayed the project for at least a year. Imagine how much pain, suffering and death might have been avoided, and how different the world might be today if Little Boy, instead of being ready to drop on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, had instead been ready to drop on Berlin on June 6, 1944.

But the material the book does include is first-rate. My likely next stop after this is Now It Can Be Told - the same story from the viewpoint of "the biggest S.O.B. who ever lived", Leslie Groves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Note to self: In the future pay attention to the book description
When I added this book to my Christmas list I must have skimmed over the part about it being just a compilation of other writer's work.Upon receiving it, I anxiously opened the book looking forward to a story describing the history of the Manhattan Project.Instead, I found, a mildly disjointed compilation of excerpts from books, articles, and official reports.Honestly, I have nobody but myself to blame for not reading the book description.Having said that, I can't really recommend this book.I'm giving it three stars only because it does contain real factual information (it doesn't get more real than regurgitating other people's work). On the whole it was a boring read. The last section on the world after the bomb was particularly boorish in it's heavy emphasis on revisionist and apologist history on the use of the bomb against Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book.
It is always a pleasure to review a good book.

Cynthia Kelly should be complimented for her intelligent chioce of the items for this anthology. The prefaces to the chapters and the items are well written, concise, but fully povide the needed background. Even for those who are familiar with the History of the Manhattan Project, the book reads like a thriller. The last two chapters can serve as an introduction to Richard Rhodes's "Arsenls of Folly".

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as engrossing as most reviews give it credit for......
As most oral histories go, the interviewer sits down with the interviewee and records their statements. But this book is not that. It is a collection of stories, newspaper articles, letters, exceprts from books and speeches...and that is what this oral history is composed from. Nevertheless, I was a bit disappointed. The book does a decent job of splicing together the history of the early development of the bomb; day to day life in Los Alamos; and the after effects of the bomb dropping. However, the last part of the book which includes modern history about current events surrounding nuclear arms was a bit boring. It could have easily been excluded from this book. I think some of the DVDs available about the Manhattan Project are far more riveting than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Manhattan Project Buffs
I was born in 1949, and although I'd heard of the Manhattan Project, had never given it a moment's thought...it was the "product" not the "process" that loomed large in my imagination.Accordingly, I adopted Cindy Kelly's book merely as a "subway companion," something to take my mind off being jostled and lurched on the way to work. But I soon became enthralled (and strange though it may seem) charmed by the tale of the making and deploying of the bomb, as told in Kelly's engrossing, skillfully-selected collection of articles and memoirs by and about the people involved and directly affected. The book provides an intimate feel for the personalities, the practical problems and the politics, and a fascinating and unbiased peek into a part of American history about which many of us know little if anything. One need not be a physicist or an atomic activist (pro or con) to find the book compelling and (again, dare I say it?) enjoyable.I have already sent the book to a few friends as birthday gifts and the like, and am compiling a list of more.I strongly suggest you give yourself a gift and read "The Manhattan Project." ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Dirty Dancing is a 1987 romantic film made in the United States. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. The story is a coming of age drama that documents a young débutante's rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Almost a third of the film involves dancing scenes choreographed by Kenny Ortega (later famous for High School Musical), and the finale has been described as "the most goosebump-inducing dance scene in movie history".Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars, Dirty Dancing became a massive box office hit. As of 2007, it has earned $213.9 million worldwide. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video, and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet. The film spawned a 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, as well as a stage version which has had sellout performances in Australia, Europe, and North America, with plans to open on Broadway. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some humour, much pretentiousness
If you have ever wanted to read about a female James Bond, with sexual prowess and flaire, here she is!Only she borders on a nausiating sweetness (perfect body, perfect I.Q., perfect lovers, perfect cook, perfect pitch, perfect address, etc.)But perhaps you will not mind her diatribes on her "perfect" morality.Still, worth a trip to the library for the humour.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Emma Rhodes, please!!
Emma Rhodes keeps getting better and better! Each book adds more and more to the character. The ending was unexpected but very satisfying! I hope Cynthia Smith has many more problems for this P.R. (Private Resolver) in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual PI, a delightful story
Emma Rhodes is a problem solver, who specializes in assisting the nobles, the rich and the powerful. The minimum fee is $20,000 for her services, but is only paid if she successfully resolves the issue for her client within two weeks. After just completing a case, Emma decides to take a vacation. On the train, she meets Juliet Bishop, who happens to be her soulmate. Juliet, a daughter of a British duke, admits that she plan to divorce her husband, who she still loves.

Emma feels that this situation sounds like something she can easily fix (for a fee). Juliet explains that her spouse Sidney is obsessively jealous of every man she talks to and hence makes life intolerable.Emma agrees to work on the problem. She goes to meet Sidney's former wives to confirm that he drove them off with his insane jealousy. However, not long after she meets with them, one of the ex wives is killed and the other almost murdered. Now Emma has more than just a spousal problem to resolve, she has to uncover who has the motive to kill Sidney's ex-wives.

Emma Rhodes is a nineties Emma Peel (Avengers TV show) with the same charm and champagne taste that somehow readers will still find enchanting. Though the fasts-paced story line makes the novel seem a bit far fetched, one becomes engrossed due to the overwhelming personality of the lead protagonist which, in turn, facilitates involvement in Emma's fantasy lifestyle. This is a one of a kind series with universal appeal. All mystery enthusiasts will clamor for more Emma Rhodes stories.

2-0 out of 5 stars okay - good mystery -annoying heroine
I found the heroine of this book, Emma Rhodes, to be too annoying to be enjoyable. She is(according to herself)attractive, sexy, highly intelligent, wealthy and witty. It was rather depressing to read about how perfect she is. It took away from the rather good murder plot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This is not the most meaningful book, but it is definitely fun to read. The main character is a bit unrealistic-she's almost TOO perfect, but sometimes too perfect is what catches our interest. What this book lacks in depth, it makes up for in good old-fashioned silliness.Very entertaining. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mystery Series
I was very happy to see that this book, the first in the Emma Rhodes series, has been reprinted.Hopefully, the other 4 books in the series will also be reprinted.(Even better would be if Cynthia Smith wrote some more books featuring Emma Rhodes!!)

I've read and enjoyed all 5 of the books, which are written in the first person. At first glance, the character of Emma Rhodes may come across as being a bit snobbish.Once you get used to her, however, she becomes more likeable and it is a lot of fun to live vicariously through her adventures.

These books are well written, with endings that are not completely obvious yet still make sense.I've read each of them more than once and I highly recommend owning this series.
