Editorial Review Product Description "A terrible thing happened. I wish it hadn't. But would I change who I married? Never." He was a hero in every sense of the word--the chiseled-from-granite star of four blockbuster Superman films and the romantic classic Somewhere in Time who, after being paralyzed in a freak horseback riding accident, became a symbol of hope for millions. Dana Reeve was no less heroic, standing steadfastly by her husband's side until his surprisingly sudden and unexpected death at age fifty-two. When Dana, a non-smoker, passed away from lung cancer just seventeen months after Chris's death, she left behind their thirteen-year-old son, Will, to be raised by friends and family. Dana was only forty-four years old. That fate could have dealt such a cruel hand to this golden couple seemed unfathomable. That they could endure it all with grace, courage, and humor defied belief. Yet for all the millions of words that have been written about their public causes and private struggles following Chris's accident, little is known about the lives they led as passionate young lovers. Now, in the manner of his poignant-yet-stirring bestsellers Jack and Jackie, Jackie After Jack, An Affair to Remember, The Day Diana Died, After Diana, and The Day John Died, No. l New York Times bestselling author Christopher Andersen draws on those who knew them best to examine in touching detail the Reeves' unique partnership and the romance, faith, and fortitude that defined it. Sometimes heartbreaking, often uplifting, always compelling, Somewhere in Heaven is more than just a portrait of a marriage. It is the profoundly human story of two souls whose brief lives made a difference, a bittersweet saga of tragedy, triumph, and loss, and--above all else--a love story for the ages. Editorial Review Product Description Admittedly he wouldn't be where he is today without the undying love andencouragement of his wife, Dana; when he speaks of her, it's clear that he'sas smitten today as he was when they first met. Reeve also credits theiryoung son Will and a huge supporting cast of family and friends. Whilestill in the early days of his long hospital stay, 3-year-old Will askedhis mom if his dad would ever be able to walk or to play soccer with him.Dana answered, "We don't know sweetheart, but maybe not." Will thoughtabout this for a moment, and concluded cheerfully, "Well he can stillsmile." Hearing the actor voice these words causes a powerful tug at yourheartstrings. Reeve talks of having led an incredibly active life before the accident, and laments his inability to do so now, without making you feel sorryfor him. Not only was he an accomplished rider, he also was a pilot, asailor, a skier, and excelled in many other sports. And his participationin, and love for, the theater and the silver screen kept him busy nearlyfull-time.Still Me begins with the accident, then weaves back andforth between past and present, creating a thorough biography of Reeve'slife. Reeve tells of his childhood, his early theater roles and theatricaltraining, and his first real experience as a public figure following aprominent role in a popular soap opera--a recollection that elicits achuckle or two from our reader. Though we will likely never see Reeve don tightsand a bright red cape again as he did in his unforgettable role ofSuperman, some believe that he has become the superhero he once merelyportrayed. Editorial Review Product Description The Americans with Disabilities Act "defies logic and common sense," The New York Times once editorialized. Salon.com dismissed it as "a surreal ideology." Why are disability rights so disliked? Why do detractors insist nobody knows about it, even as thousands of articles have been devoted to it? Why do they claim it's a bad law? In "Make Them Go Away: Clint Eastwood, Christopher Reeve & The Case Against Disability Rights," longtime disability-rights journalist Mary Johnson sheds rare light on this issue by examining the case against disability rights in depth. What are its main arguments? Where do they come from? And what is the other side? Can a valid -- strong -- case be made FOR disability rights? It can, says Johnson, who makes a compelling argument that, since the disabled minority is the one minority any of us can suddenly and unexpectedly join, the nation ignores disability rights at its peril. ...Disappointing Otherthan his rise to stardom at an early age with Superman, and his tragicaccident, there is nothing much to say. This becomes evident when theauthor runs out of words and starts using the same phrases over and overagain.By the middle of the book I was annoyed and tired of listening toit.It left me feeling that Christopher Reeve was a well to do, preppyactor who made it big, then squandered his stardom and made excuses for hisotherwise mediocre acting career. Sadly enough, it takes his paralyzingriding accident to pick up the pace of the book and make it interestingenough to finish. His life after the fall is certainly more notable andthe book depicts a couple of really moving moments. Perhaps in another 20years his life will have expanded enough to make a really worthwhile book.My opinion is they should have waited until then to write this one. ... Read more |
