THE MISTRESS OF SPICES is a universal immigrant story told through magical realism in the vein of LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE and CHOCOLAT. It is a sensual love story building on the cultural themes of the writers of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM and WHAT'S COOKING? - what as an immigrant do you choose to keep or leave behind as you assimilate. In order for the magic to work, TILO must obey the rules set out for a mistress - never leave the store, never touch another human, and love only the spices. When DOUG - a handsome, enigmatic American with a secret past - enters her store, TILO's own desires are stirred for the first time. She begins to feel passion for the American and as she becomes closer to DOUG, the spices she has given her other customers begin to misbehave. The more TILO falls in love and begins to defy the rules, the worse the lives of her customers become. TILO must decide. Will she choose forbidden love for an American over devotion to her spices and her traditions? Aishwarya Rai, star of Gurinder Chadha's upcoming BRIDE & PREJUDICE, is confirmed to play TILO. 5-0 out of 5 stars Aishwarya Rai Fan
If you are an Aishwarya Rai fan, you will absolutely love this movie. The blend of her story, history of spices and her relationship with her customers is fascinating. Makes me wish she owned a Spice Bazar in my own home town!I consider this to be a "must see" of Rai's films.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fable about doing the right thing
In the tradition of morality tales and fables, this movie is a great story about doing the right thing.
The movie is a mixture of Bollywood and Hollywood; it is the story of a woman from India who has
located herself in San Francisco. She uses spices to assist people to realize their hopes, dreams, and
desires. In this movie, the spices themselves are another character in this movie. When Dylan
McDermott's character gets hurt, the mistress of spices must choose beyond what she has always known.
The love story is cute, but secondary to the lessons imparted by the spices. This is a great movie
for women from traditional backgrounds to have illustrated for them the sorrows AND joys of moving
beyond traditions; not forsaking traditions but enlarging the paradigm in which traditions exist.
Both old and new ideas have value, and as human beings women must learn how to mix the old and the
new in a balanced way that allows growth without sacrificing the foundations of one's life.
I think this is a positive fable that empowers women without belittling men.I loved this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spicy and Sweet - Like Chocolate!
I bought this movie after seeing "Bride and Prejudice" and my husband had a fit as Dylan McDermot was in it who is not one of his favorite actors. He was pacified when he saw that Aishwarya Rai was in it. I made him sit and watch it with me which was an absolute delight and joy. Reminded us both very much of "Chocolate" with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp especially when the description of the spices. Very well done and touching in parts. Visually stunning during certain moments and the music was beautiful. A must see!

5-0 out of 5 stars loved it!!
loved this movie!!i hadn't seen it before but i love different types of romances/romantic comedies and i like Dylan McDermott and based on some of the other reviews, thought i'd try it. it was fantastic. i watched it several times in a row! the acting's very good, the cinematography's excellent, the whole feel of the movie in general is exotic, of course. highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Mistress of Spices
Aishwarya Rai is a very beautiful woman, one of those museum pieces- to be seen and admired but not touched, someone that one desires but cannot attain, and that is how this fairytale of a movie unfolds. It is serious yet entertaining. The mysticism associated with spices is a new twist that is not completely out of the realm of imagination but is certainly a streach. How that mysticism is co-related to Tilo, the protagonist's ability to see the future has not been fully explored here. The acting of all the characters is perfect. This is the first time I have seen Aishwarya in a steaming lovemaking scene. That was done to perfection. All in all a good chick flick. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who is the most beautiful woman in the world?
I am a indian male and a big fan of Aishwarya Rai and have followed her since the beginning of her movie career.

The book was great as it highlighted many aspects of the life of Bollywood Queen Aishwarya Rai. I think she is a great actress very talented and I am looking forward to viewing some of her up and coming books and movies.

I do not think that she is the most beautiful woman in the world. Aish is very cute.To be the most beautiful woman in the world you have to be perfect in the sight of everyone. The most beautiful woman in the world is model/actress Beau-Latasha who beauty is so spectacular that she looks unreal. Many say that Beau-Latasha is a myth while others believe she is the most beautiful ever.

I am sure that Aishwarya and Beau-Latasha will both be very successful in their careers. As for Beau-Latasha she reigns supreme in beauty for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little book on Aishwarya Rai.Model, Actress, Godess.
This book by Biswadeep Ghosh is as I have said in the heading a good little book on India's most famous supermodel and actress. Bollywood mega sensation Aishwarya Rai, who many claim is the most beautiful woman in all the world. Well as for me I totally agree, but I confess i'm biased as I am among the legions of her adoring fans. But i'm sure any objective observer would not have that much of a hard time agreeing upon seeing the enchanting beauty for the first time.

As a fan of Aishwarya's who just eats up any information regarding her that I can find or scrounge, this book did not disappoint, although it did not TOTALLY enlighten as well.
Regarding the subject of Aishwarya Rai.Mr. Ghosh earnestly tries hard enough to do a thorough enough of a job by canvassing aspects of Ms. Rai's life such as Aishwarya's childhood and school years.

Then on to her stint in the famous Indian Pepsi commerical that made her a household name in India. Last but certainly not least on to her crowning as Ms. World in 1994 and the start of her movie career in Bollywood among her many other misadventures, most notably regarding her on again/off again relationship with the volatile Salman Khan.

One thing about this book I respect though a avid Aishwary Rai fan, THERE ARE some subject matters in this book upon objective reading does not portray Aishwarya Rai in the kindest light, if one is honest with one's self upon reading the passages in this book, you would find yourself doubting some of the things shes gone on to say and do.But then again I could very well say the most of the book does paint a rosy picture of Aishwarya Rai and seems to be Mr. Ghosh's best "Rah Rah" act regarding Aiswharya.

But it does show some of her faults which as humans we all have, and it writes of her many misses in the Bollywood film industry as her many hits. All in all it shows a woman who possess, the very least beauty but also great fortitude, patience and perserverance who worked hard to get to where she's at now.The top of the Bollywood/modelling world, and poised very soon to make a big splash in America. This book does a decent enough of a job to fill you in on the early history and current career status of Aishwary Rai, although I doubt it would tell you everything youmay wanted to know about the enchanting beauty.

Suffice it to say, some will find this book interesting, some may find it amusing, some may some of Aishwaya's shortcomings portrayed in this book shocking. But it's only reasonable to say fan or not, the woman is only human, not a God or Goddess and even though I read what I read I STILL dont know the whole truth regarding many of the things written about here in this book.

So I cant judge the lady cause only she knows the truth. But hey that is OUR fault as fans. Remember people make it a habit to put their heroe'ssuch as sports, music stars, actors on a mythical plane. In the words of my mother who cautioned me, "Dont put ANYONE on a pedstal, cause they're only going to fall" Same with AishwaryaRai, you, me or anyone else.

Nice little book to read, some good info but dont read into it anymore beyond that.Thank You. I hope you enjoyed my review ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich & Luscious
This film is different from other Bollywood movies I've seen. It's an historic epic, a rich tapestry of mid-16th century Hindustan (India).I must say I was very impressed. The cinematography, costumes, set design were outstanding. The two religions, Islam and Hindu, were treated with sensitivity and respect.
Indian stars, Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, were totally believable as the great Muslim emperor and his unwilling Hindi bride. Also, they are both beautiful to look at.And what chemistry! If you're a female, a couple of scenes will make you swoon...seriously.
Supporting roles were also well acted (except in a few instances when it might have been a little much). Those are minor faults and easily overlooked.
Indians love their music and dancing and here, both were appropriate and integral to the story.Quite lovely actually.
Bottom line...if you like a movie that's luscious, romantic, full of action and drama, you will LOVE
Jodhaa Akbar.Just be sure to get the BluRay version. It's worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing movie and Amazing Blueray disk
OK, they took a lot of liberty with history here. Among all the Islamic invaders and marauders who wrecked havoc with Hindus in India, Jallaluddin Mohammad Akbar was, relatively speaking one of the few good guys. So I'll let the gushingglorification of him pass.

But asentertainment goes, this is one hellavamovie. At the beginning, it may look like a war movie, but the wars and battles and court intrigues are only a backdrop for the romance between Akbarthe young Sufi Emperor and Jodha, the independent and proud Hindu Rajput Princesswho had marry him for political reasons. She is a very independent and religious (Hindu)and stands her ground on her faith. He although in position of power respects her and amused at her initially and then slowly falls in love with her. It's a nice romantic journey.

Aishvaria Rai and Hrithic Roshan were transformed into these two real historical characters . They look different and nice.

The rich scenery and color is just awesome. There is even this sufi spiritual song, Khwaja Mere Khwaja - by A R Rahman that I love. You can put it in a loop and listen to it forever.

The quality of the DVD was very satisfying. The cinematography was breathtaking. The true to life Palaces around northern India are brought to life and I now feel like making a pilgrimage to all those wonderful breathtaking locations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching
While 'Sarkar Raj' is the sequel to 'Sarkar,' which was based on 'The Godfather,' this film was not based on 'The Godfather Part II,' but there are still many allusions to it. In this sequel, the father, Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan), is alive and well and calling the shots, but he's preparing to hand over the reins to his son, Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), who's now deeply entrenched in the family business he once eschewed. As the story progresses, Shankar becomes less of a clear-cut surrogate for Michael and more of a curious amalgamation of all three Corleone brothers. Enter Anita (played by Abhishek's wife Aishwarya Rai)--and she's no compliant Kay, but tough and sharp, playing with the big boys in her power suits--Shankar's equal in every way. The characters are fascinating and the performances top-notch, but the plot--involving shady businessmen, corrupt politicians, and gangsters jockeying to build a lucrative power plant--is as dry as day-old toast. The end is somewhat redeeming, though, as the director leaves his characters in a shockingly different place than Coppola did in the second 'Godfather' installment. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket)

4-0 out of 5 stars "To kill is a crime. To kill at the right time is politics."
Three and a half stars.

SARKAR RAJ is the 2008 political/crime drama sequel to Sarkar, which was a ferocious 2005 Hindi take on The Godfather (Widescreen Edition). The principal actors are back, specifically, real-life father and son actors Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan. Gorgeous Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek's new bride, jumps on board, as well. As in SARKAR, there aren't any musical numbers here, or lowbrow comedy or much of a romance. You're supposed to take this movie very seriously.

Not a crime lord as much as an unofficial but very influential governing power in his own right, Subhash Nagare (Amitabh Bachchan) has ruled and controlled the destinies of his people for decades. Much like in THE GODFATHER, the citizens of Mumbai approached Subhash for a solution or an arbitration to their difficulties. SARKAR told of Subhash's time coming to an end as an active power and his passing the torch to his son, Shankar (Abhishek). SARKAR RAJ opens a few years later, with Shankar Nagare having settled into his new role, changed and hardened and more decisive. Yet he still very much cares for the welfare of his people.

Entrepreneur Anita Rajan (Aishwarya Rai) heads up the sweeping Sheppard power plant project, of which proposal she presents to Shankar. However, the optimum site for the power plant lies in rural Maharashtra, which means that 40,000 villagers would have to be displaced for the plant to be built. But Shankar is quick to see the long term advantages for the ever struggling populace of Maharashtra. He talks his reluctant father into consenting to the project, and off Shankar goes to talk to the villagers.

But he soon meets resistance in the form of local dissident Sanjay Somji, who has his own daunting connections. Somji uses verbal histrionics to sway the masses to his side, and the violent demonstrations promptly begin. The Nagares' power base has always been rooted in the high regard and trust accorded to them by the common people. Insidiously, an unknown agent starts to whittle away at that power base. And I think I'll stop right there, except to say that all this stuff so far is only the tip of the iceberg. There are some serious machinations going down in this film.

First off, while SARKAR RAJ isn't quite as good as SARKAR, it's still dang watchable. Especially if you've seen SARKAR and are curious about the Nagares' further exploits. It's a fine crime drama and political thriller, even with its slow spots. SARKAR RAJ explores the nature of power - the wielding of it, the erosion it has on the soul, the jealousies it instills in others. The Nagares have remained true to their ideals, even if it means that those ideals are kept alive thru ruthless acts. In a gray world, the Nagares are who the common people turn to, for succor and for judgment. That is power, willingly granted.

SARKAR RAJ boasts stylish filmmaking, polished cinematography, confident acting. The movie looks very good on screen, awash in sepia tones and in brooding shadows, most of which dramatically frame the many close-ups of the Bachchans. Speaking of whom, the Bachchans show off their considerable acting chops, with Abhishek very intense and his dad masterfully taking over in the film's last half hour or so. Aishwarya Rai (it's weird adding a Bachchan at the end of her name) is decent for most of the film, but really gets good in the latter stages. Her last scene, as she comfortably asks for tea in the Nagare household, helps to set up a possible sequel. By the way, this is the first film which co-stars Aish and Abhishek since they got married.

Okay, now the downside. SARKAR RAJ is two hours and five minutes long, and, at times, the film's length presses on you. The story really takes its sweet time developing. Furthermore, the soundtrack tends to go overboard with the ominous "Govinda, Govinda" chorus. After a while, you'll probably get tired of it. There are several scenes between Abhishek and Aishwarya which come off as trite, specifically those dealing with Shankar confiding to Anita, where you could see the subtext of Anita beginning to feel sappy emotions. All in all, the romantic subplot between Shankar and Anita is kind of kicked to the curb. Come to think of it, the same goes for the relationship between Shankar and his wife.

I'll say, though, that the ending is very satisfying, with the wrathful Sarkar putting the pieces of the conspiracy together and then proceeding to get his sweet vengeance on. I say, three and a half stars for SARKAR RAJ, as again the Bachchans demonstrate why they are the preeminent acting family in India. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Moving and Very Good
This is a very moving movie starring Aishwarya Rai as a woman who is abused in her marriage. It is a dramatic movie, not the usual Bollywood type movie that contains dancing and music.Aishwayra Rai is magnificent in the lead role, and shows what a versatile actress she is.It is a great movie, and very well done.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must see this movie
Set in Britain in the late 1980s, a young bride from India with the hopes of a bright future, struggles with her duties as a traditional Indian wife while enduring daily abuse, neglect, torment and dishonor from her alcoholic husband. An empowering story of rebirth, as we see the heroine, rise from the 'ashes' of her burning home and to be liberated as a free woman from being a battered woman. The storyline is compelling, as we see flashbacks as the story unfolds. We are drawn in as her friendship evolves with her close friends in prison, while her pleas are being fought for in the courtroom.

This is a refreshing departure from the mellodramatic musical Bollywood movies that causes us to reflect on the lives of women, from all walks of life and cultures, who struggle daily from the torment of abusive spouses.

This is a must see movie.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Woman is the slave of the slaves. Yes she is. Think about it.
This film seemed very promising at the outset. Although I generally am suspicious of productions based on true stories I was aware of this case from the BBC News and decided to give it a try.

The notion of a film based on true life experiences from within the Indian culture is still rather strange given the hostility of the Indian sub-continent communities to Western interpretations of their customs and traditions. However, it is a sign of the vibrancy of Asian cinema which is holding up those traditions to the light of modern and post-modern views of the world.

The beginning of the movie is very promising where we follow the perpetrator of the attack up the stairs and into the bedroom where oil is doused on the sleeping man. As circumstances unfold we are introduced into the world of the wife as a mere chattel of a husband who treats her as he pleases. For all of the pomp and festivities of the Asian wedding what we discover is a medieval division of labour in a household which degenerates into abuse and humiliation with in-laws turning a blind eye because it is the custom to do so.

The recent incidences of honour killings in the UK as well as the barbaric treatment of the woman who was subjected to multiple rape in Pakistan due to some offence committed by her brother suggests that these experiences still occur, but behind closed doors and silent communities throughout the world.

As the film develops with the wife being imprisoned in the alien world of a woman's prisonwhere she meets antagonism and racialism apparently based upon the ignorance of her way of life is in some ways enlightening. Whilst she becomes the focus of attention of a women's support group organised by more modern Asian women, she is befriended by her cell-mate who, unbeknowns to the rest of us, has a brother who is a high powered lawyer.

Ultimately right wins out and a slight crack appears in the cultural barbarity which many Asian women are confronting each and every day. What I found to be a great let down was the sort of happilly ever after type ending which oddly reflects a scene in the Tall Guy where everyone bands together in support including the prison bully. Very Disneyesque in a goody two shoes sort of way. This really was a major letdown for me in a drama which has significant cultura implications.

This film reminded me very much of movies which came from China in the early years once restrictions were eased. Whereas in those films, difficult social and political situations were addressed in a sensitive way which got the point across, Provoked seemed to miss the opportunity.

Well shot, well acted with a reasonable storyline, I would still recommend this movie. Good but not great but one that should be watched by as many men as possible. Some of the attitudes exposed herein can still be found, particularly among industrial workers, in many western countries. There are lessons there for us all. ... Read more

Excerpt: Van Morrison, OBE (born George Ivan Morrison; 31 August 1945) is a critically acclaimed Northern Irish singer and songwriter with a reputation for being stubborn and idiosyncratic. His live performances at their best are regarded as transcendental and inspired; while some of his recordings, such as the studio albums Astral Weeks and Moondance, and the live album It's Too Late to Stop Now, are widely viewed as among the greatest ever made. Excerpt: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Gujarati: , pronounced ; 2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948) was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He pioneered satyagraha-resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa, or total nonviolence, which helped India to gain independence, and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi is often referred to as Mahatma Gandhi (; Sanskrit: महात्मा mahātmā or "Great Soul", an honorific first applied to him by Rabindranath Tagore), and in India also as Bapu (Gujarati: , bāpu or "Father"). He is officially honoured in India as the Father of the Nation; his birthday, 2 October, is commemorated there as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi first employed civil disobedience while an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, during the resident Indian community's struggle there for civil rights. Above all, he aimed to achieve Swaraj or the independence of India from foreign domination. Gandhi famously led his followers in the Non-cooperation movement that protested the British-imposed salt tax with the 4...http://booksllc.net/?l=en ... Read more
