5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of true life adventure!
This book tells the story of first exlporers of many routes. It is amazing to hear the follies, near escapes and triumps of actual discovery.Includes the first crossing of Australia, the Atlantic and trip to the South Pole.Something that everyone should read or at least know.I got an old copy from a Library through Amazon for 35 cents plus reasonable shipping.I had read the book before but have since passed on both copies for others to enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good high school level (maybe) information.
The book of the series ~ and that implies a certain, simplified, level of writing, and simplistic diagrams ~ on eleven (two went together) explorers. In fact, the very poor maps are probably the worst feature in this book; given the subject matter, and the importance of maps to them, you would think it might be possible to retrace their journeys with more accurace, to show us in greater detail where they actually went; quite the contrary, we are given a continent-sized map for the smallest trip.Other than the maps, though, i really enjoyed this book. The information was, as far as i bothered to think about it, accurate. The writing was generally a pleasure to read. The selection of explorers was nicely done. The tone is, considering it dates from the Seventies, neither patronising nor adulatory ~ nor, thank goodness, Politically Correct. We are treated to a fair assessment of the explorers' abilities and shortcomings.Burke and Wills, for example, we surely the wrong pair to explore a back garden, let alone the Australian Outback.Amundsen is given credit for his organisational ability, but we are also shown that he was never really accepted in his lifetime as a truely great explorer, because he was hidden by the shadow of Scott all his later life. This cannot substitute for a good series of biographies; as a popular book, as a way to start to know more about ten brave men and an entirely amazing woman, it is a great success. ... Before he can tie the knot, he has to untie the apron strings. Anyone who's ever had a mother will be enchanted by this tenderhearted romantic comedy starring John Candy and Maureen O'Hara in her first film role in nearly 20 years. John Candy stars as Danny, a lonely 38-year-old Chicago cop who still lives with his mother, Rose (Maureen O'Hara). She's a domineering Irish widow who's used to controlling her son's life. When Danny falls in love with Theresa (Ally Sheedy), his mother suddenly has to compete for his attention. As Rose sets out to break up her son's relationship, she finds herself romanced by her amorous neighbor Nick (Anthony Quinn). Meanwhile Danny is just trying to break away from his meddling m other. Product Description

This is the only reading inventory on the market to support the treatment of reading as a thinking process through questions and assessments that measure not only readers' ability to recall facts, but also whether they can draw logical conclusions about those facts and respond critically to those conclusions. This book includes both narrative and expository readers' passages for use with pre-K readers through readers in grade 9; and is written in an accessible, inviting style. Through the use of longer passages, multi-level assessments, and case studies, the authors provide a truly effective means to secure a differential analysis of a child's reading comprehension performance.

Three distinct levels of comprehension questions: text-based, inferential, and critical—assist in grouping readers by ability levels, from simple recall to critical engagement with text. Case studies of three levels of diagnostic analysis helps teachers understand the difference between readers who are having genuine difficulty and readers who are simply reluctant. Rubrics for retelling and for fluency stress that word recognition must be assessed within the context of comprehension. Inclusion of the simplified miscue analysis technique highlights both the reader's strategies and his/her orientation.

FEATURES:

  • Automated Scoring and Interpretation Interview (ASII)--Teachers who use the ASII can include the formatted printouts as part of a student’s academic records.

  • Tutorials for Scoring Miscues, Retellings and Comprehension Items

  • DVD-ROM Video Demonstrations of the CRI--Gives teachers access to demonstrations of the proper techniques for administering the CRI.  The DVD also makes the CRI easier to learn for teachers who would like to administer the assessment but who have limited experience in using informal reading inventories.  In addition to video demonstrations, the DVD includes two extensive case studies that demonstrate the capabilities of the CRI as a diagnostic instrument.

  • Expanded Number of Passages per Grade Level--this feature will allow users to gather pre-test and posttest information about a reader’s performance, something that they could not easily do with the original CRI.  It also allows for some flexibility in test administration.  If a teacher feels, for example, that a student has simply not connected with the topic of a given passage or even has too much background knowledge has the option to test the child with a different passage.

  • Expanded Number of Grade Levels Assessed--this expanded range will allow users to assess older readers with a great deal more precision than was possible with the original CRI.

  • Expanded Technical Chapter--users who have been reluctant to consider the CRI because of the fear that the instrument has not been established statistically as a valid and reliable measure can put those fears to rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool to assess higher level thinking
The CRI is one of the few inventories that assesses a student's higher level thinking skills. Most inventories rely heavily on text-based and low-level inference questions which do not allow us to fully understand the thinking process of our students. Many children that have lower comprehension scores on the CRI might score much higher on other inventories because of the focus on text-based comprehension questions. The UT/DRTA allows teachers to further develop the critical thinking skills that so many of our children lack.If a CRI is not available for a teacher to assess these skills, the UT/DRTA may also serve as a diagnostic tool for teachers to assess higher level thinking skills.Peer led discussion is a tool that can challenge student thinking and encourage students to justify their responses. This process creates a learning environment where students learn to think outside of the box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recommendations for Use in READING TEACHER Journal
The April 2008 issue of THE READING TEACHER, published by the International Reading Association gives high ratings to the Critical Reading Inventory-2 for use with students in this NCLB and Reading First era.Eight IRIs were analyzed, and this inventory rated very positively.

5-0 out of 5 stars CRI II...A Wonderful Reading Inventory!
The CRI II is a wonderful reading tool to assess students reading and thinking. Most IRI's are text based. The CRI II takes reading inventories to the next level, it assesses students critical and inferential thinking. We know reading is not just spitting back text based information yet it involves a deeper understanding of the text. The CRI II helps educators identify what students are not "thinking" while reading. The data gathered from the inventory helps teachers and specialists design lessons and programs that fit the needs of their students.Unlike other inventories, the CRI II passages are interesting and engaging. The students actually enjoy reading the passages!! I would have to say it is by far the best reading inventory I have used.

    5-0 out of 5 stars CRI - 2 Is A Must Have
I am a huge fan of the CRI-2.As a reading specialist, it is a fantastic tool to identify strengths and weaknesses within a reader.I especially like the differentiation of the critical reasoning skills. The CRI-2 identifies areas of strength and weakness that the other inventories do not focus on. The CRI-2 is user friendly, parent friendly and an all around great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Diagnosticians Give the CRI 2 A Noteworthy Review
It is hard to believe that Gluckman was talking about the same inventory that I used. The CRI is a breeze to learn; the instructions are crystal clear and there is a DVD in case you need visual learning. The 2nd edition includes a subset of words that are included in both the word lists and the passages so if you want to explore the relationship between isolation and context, it is a no brainer. Why the CRI would take longer to find appropriate levels is a mystery to me. Just read the manual--they explain all kinds of variations and short cuts for using the test.As far as the kids hating it goes, does anyone out there know of a reading test that kids love? For my money, the CRI has infinitely better stories and passages than the other inventories, and I've used many of them!
The big advantage of the CRI over the others is that it tests the kids' ability to think about as well as remember what they read.I'll grant you that thought-provoking questions are tougher to score, but the web-based tutorials included with CRI 2 make it simple for even novices to score. The retelling rubrics are unique and I'll admit that they are a bit complicated but there is a downloadable program that will calculate those scores automatically. It will also calculate all kinds of word recognition and comprehension percentages automatically and that makes analysis and reporting really simple. The program will even print out a professional looking recapitulation record. As far as I'm concerned, the CRI is way ahead of the curve in assessment and technology. I've been down the road with the other inventories and I'm not going back.
