5-0 out of 5 stars A Hgher Enlighten View
I love some of the quotes in ths book and they show lots of wisdom. For example the following:

"A man who claims to know what is good for others, is dangerous."

There are many pearls of wisdom in this volume including an interview with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and some of his teachings. This may look new age but it is really very much old eastern rooted teachings. Very enlighenting reading experience. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Although its participants are still in grade school, Pop Warner football is serious business in Miami, where local teams routinely advance to the national championships. Games draw thousands of fans; recruiters vie for nascent talent; drug dealers and rap stars bankroll teams; and the stakes are so high that games sometimes end in gunshots. In America's poorest neighborhood, troubled parents dream of NFL stardom for children who long only for a week in Disney World at the Pop Warner Super Bowl.In 2001, journalist Robert Andrew Powell spent a year following two teams through roller-coaster seasons. The Liberty City Warriors, former national champs, will suffer the team's first-ever losing season. The Palmetto Raiders, undefeated for two straight years, will be rewarded for good play with limo rides and steak dinners. But their flamboyant coach (the "Darth Vader of youth football") will face defeat in a down-to-the-wire playoff game. We Own This Game is an inside-the-huddle look into a world of innocence and corruption, where every kickoff bares political, social, and racial implications; an unforgettable drama that shows us just what it is to win and to lose in America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars we own this game
This book isabout inner city youth football in Miami , Florida. The stakes are very high. Drug dealers and pro athletes bankroll teams, and gangs hang out and roam the park that they play in. Sometimes drug dealers bet as much as one thousand dollars to one million dollars. Things like that can get very intense and scary. For example, in 2002 a gangster shot his gun in the air in order to stop the game becuase he was losing a 20,000 dollar bet. Fortunately nobody was hurt and the game was not ended, but it can be very scary for players ,coaches ,and spectators.
This book is not onlyabout gang violence, it is also about how numerous teams fight and scratch for a national title, bragging rights, and a free week at Disney World. And it is about how parents of the players dream of NFL stardom as a ticket out of poverty and the ghetto.

Reading this book was very interesting. While reading it I found out how scary a Pop Warner football game could get.I also made a comparision between football in Maine , and in Florida, and instantly knew the difference was thatthe fans are different and laid back in Maine and do't have drug dealers and gangsters controling the outcome of the game.also in Maine the fans don't bet heavily on a certain number of games .Anoyher thing i found was that the parents take winning more seriouslythen the players. But I would tellanybody to read this book becuase even if you don,t like football it give you a little taste of life on and off the field in Florida

Product Description
In the unfolding of a true spiritual mission upon the Earth, the great teachers of humanity work together. An example of this working together to fulfill a spiritual mission for humanity is presented to us in this book. It is a matter in this work of a collaboration between two great spiritual teachers of humanity in the twentieth century: Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and Valentin Tomberg (1900-1973).Rudolf Steiner's life work culminated in the 'baptismal event' for the Second Coming of Christ expressed in the Foundation Stone of Love and clothed in the words of the Foundation Stone meditation. Valentin Tomberg, after his spiritual awakening in 1932, entered into the Mystery of Christ's Second Coming. His Studies on the Foundation Stone Meditation, published in critical years of world history (1936-1939), were written just a few years after his spiritual awakening. They penetrate into the Mystery of Christ's Second Coming by offering the reader access from within to the Foundation Stone meditation given to humanity by Christ through Rudolf Steiner. Every sentence of these studies - born of living experience undergone by Valentin Tomberg - leads the reader into the sublime mystery of the spirit awakening of humanity through Christ in our time.Understood as a manual for enlightenment, to be worked with meditatively over and over again, this work is one of the great treasures of humanity's spiritual literature - a priceless jewel for every spiritual seeker in our time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Stone a Gem
Valentin Tomberg's Foundation Stone Studies seem to be the first studies written on the subject of Rudolf Steiner's Foundation Stone Meditation. However, due to the controversies surrounding the author, this text was never properly published at the time, and never received the recognition it deserved.

I had worked with the Foundation Stone Meditation regularly for close to a decade, and read the standard books written about it, when this text fell into my hands back in the late 1980's. It definitely made the difference that made a difference. New depths emerged. Rudolf Steiner's Foundation Stone was not only looked AT; it was looked THROUGH, like a lens or a window to other dimensions. Valentin Tomberg taught me an approach to meditative formulae in general and the Foundation Stone in particular that still bears rich fruit in 2010 - in ways that perhaps neither he nor Rudolf Steiner himself would have been able to fathom back in the days between the Great Wars, when their works appeared.

Jacket copy of the first American edition, a Wartime Book, of 1944 :

With impressive literary power, with a beauty that makes this novel live and glow in the consciousness of the reader, Robert Graves unfolds the story of the tragic and eventful life of Marie Powell, who, at the age of sixteen, was pushed into marrying the man who was England's greatest epic poet - and knew it - John Milton.

This story, by an acknowledged master of the historical novel, has a triple fascination.

First, for its tender account of the romance Marie Powell found outside the walls of her tyrannical husband's house, and the utter misery to which he enforced her.

Then, for the astute study of the "sublime" Milton of Paradise Lost, at last portrayed in his true light, in those characteristics which led him to become Oliver Cromwell's Dr. Goebbels.

And further, for the brilliant account of one of the most breath-taking epochs in English history, when that kingdom was ravaged by a bloody civil war and the tides of fortune swayed from one to the other side of the opposing camps - the King against his parliament, tyranny against freedom - culminating in the dramatic execution of Charles I, and the establishment of a republic, all of which assumes added significance in the light of today's events.

Robert Graves needs no particular introduction to the American reading public, for at one stroke, his brilliantly successful novel, I, CLAUDIUS, established him as one of the outstanding historical novelists of our time. Graves was born in London in 1895, the son of Alfred Percival Graves, the poet. In his early years, he probably reaped more knowledge from his father's extensive library than from the six prep schools to which he was sent prior to his entering the famous Charterhouse. The First World War caused him to set aside the idea of going to Oxford. He promptly applied for, and obtained, a commission in a Welsh regiment, in which he served until he was wounded in 1917, when he was sent to Oxford to convalesce. Siegfried Sassoon was a fellow officer of his, and it was at that time that Graves brought out his first book of verse. At Oxford, he was married to Nancy Nicholson, and, owing to serious financial difficulties, he was not able to graduate from St. John's College until 1926. After Oxford, Robert Graves went to Egypt, where he was a professor at the University of Cairo. He next resided in Majorca, where he conducted the Seizin Press with Laura Riding, until the Spanish civil war brought an end to his activities there. In addition to several volumes of verse, Graves is the author of such other successes as COUNT BELISARIUS and SERGEANT LAMB'S AMERICA, and his autobiography, GOODBYE TO ALL THAT, with its inevitable sequel, BUT IT STILL GOES ON.

From David Copperfield by Charles Dickens:

'Do you recollect the date,' said Mr. Dick, looking earnestly at me, and taking up his pen to note it down, 'when King Charles the First had his head cut off?'

I said I believed it happened in the year sixteen hundred and forty-nine.

'Well,' returned Mr. Dick, scratching his ear with his pen, and looking dubiously at me.'So the books say; but I don't see how that can be.Because, if it was so long ago, how could the people about him have made that mistake of putting some of the trouble out of his head, after it was taken off, into mine?'

I was very much surprised by the inquiry; but could give no information on this point.

...I was going away, when he directed my attention to the kite.

'What do you think of that for a kite?' he said.

I answered that it was a beautiful one.I should think it must have been as much as seven feet high.

'I made it.We'll go and fly it, you and I,' said Mr. Dick.'Do you see this?'

He showed me that it was covered with manuscript, very closely and laboriously written; but so plainly, that as I looked along the lines, I thought I saw some allusion to King Charles the First's head again, in one or two places.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great find...
I happened upon this book in a library sale, and so glad I picked it up! The prose in this book is astoundingly gorgeous....poetry.

The details of everyday life in the period are vast, it's all intertwined in a bitter marriage and life of John Milton...told through his wife who was forced into marriage with him at 16...2 temperments so unsuited to one another. She loved another.

You'll love this gem of a book. I am surprised it is not more well known. ... Read more

This book has been repackaged a couple of times...

A handsome, oblong book, black cloth over hardback boards on heavy paper with dustjacket. 118 pp with about 100 illustrations, almost all in b&w: mostly photos with some sketches and bits of ephemera.

"His elder daughter draws on her meticulously-kept diaries and a regiment of heavy, green-bound scrapbooks to show snapshots, superbly illustrated letters, contributions to the family sketch club, private moments of quiet and traquility, flashes of sudden humour, special family events, and many events, great and small, which go to make up this friendly, paternalistic man." ... Product Description
Zen is a path to spiritual fulfilment. In order to follow it you need to be able to do two things: sit on your butt and breathe. How hard is that? Do you need to be a buddhist to do Zen? No. Zen and Buddhism are kissing cousins but they aren't married. Any Christian, Jew, Muslim, or atheist can study Zen without comprising his or her beliefs. There are three things that will help along the way: great faith - not faith in a Christian sense but simply a firm belief that the Zen path will lead to enlightenment; great doubt - you must be prepared to take nothing for granted and examine everything for yourself from the ground up; and great perseverance - Zen is not instant enlightenment, it takes years of constant effort. Travel the path and enjoy!  ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Zen you will ever dip into.
This small but 'fat' book is a gem.Pick it up and open it anywhere to be greeted by insightful, profound and surprising wit. It has such depth that it is obvious the author knows full well, the experience of Zen (on the Path of sudden, joyful and enlightening moments in the Eternal Now).Laugh out loud at its outrageous facing of truths. This book is now out of print, so it is a great opportunity to buy it from this source, while still available.

Entertaining if you get it, not so much if you haven't already learned the hard way.

Product Description
Developed from the A-5 nuclear bomber and used in a reconnaissance role, the RA-5C Vigilante was the largest and fastest aeroplane ever to operate from the deck of an aircraft carrier. During the Vietnam War it sustained the highest loss ratio of any American aircraft in that conflict. This volume includes compelling accounts of combat missions over key communist targets, where crews dodged Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) and anti-aircraft fire to secure all-important mission photographs. Written by a Vigilante combat veteran this book is crammed full of action-packed first-hand accounts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars RA-5C Vigilante Units in Combat
Excellent documentary on the combat operations of the supersonic RA-5C Vigilante aircraft! The book covers all combat operations or cold war situations in which these aircraft were at risk. There are many interesting accounts of events that occcurred during the various missions that a reader would find amusing and yet very informative. Great stories on the Cuban Missile Crisis missions as well as the Vietnam War experience. This title will definitely give the reader an appreciation of the dangerous exploits of unarmed photo jets in combats. It is very consistent with the excellent quality that this series of books have produced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vigilante Rocks
As always this book from the Osprey series does not disappoint. The Vigilante does not get the credit it deserves. For its time, it was a very modern aircraft design. It started out as a bomber but its role quickly became exclusively photo recon. The book does describe this early role as a bomber but then concentrates on the Vigilante's role as a blazingly fast photo recon aircraft. For all you F-4 Phantom fans, the Vigilante had the same twin J79 jet engines as the Phantom so the Vigilante was a Mach two camera. The book describes how the Vigilante was uses, and what the priority targets were, and the types of defenses it had to go up against (remember, speed saves !) and the book also desribes the different types of photo recon equipment and sensors the Vigilante carried. The book had lots of photos I had not seen before and the 5 pages of color photos were great. So eventhough the Vigilante did not carry any armament other than cameras, the book describes some of the missions that were still important and exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Naval Aviator's Guide To The Vigilante
Robert Powell, an experienced RA-5C pilot, has written an excellent account of the development and history of the Vigilante from the early strategic A3J-1/A-5A to the "156 Series" RA-5C. Needless to say the employment of the aircraft in Vietnam is the primary focus of the book, and it does not disappoint. Powell skillfully gives the account of all the RVAH squadrons from both the historical standpoint of operational employment as well as a personal stories of noteworthy or colorful individual crewmembers and sorties.

Sadly, there are few references about this magnificent aircraft available, and this is by far the best I have seen. The book is organized roughly chronologically, and is generally very well illustrated with one exception: there are only two cockpit photographs in the entire book, and none illustrating the pilot's forward panel (although one shows a small piece of it); there is a good shot of the RAN's forward instrument panel which shows the radar display, optical viewfinder, and RHAW display in good detail. There are thirty beautiful color plates in the book showing aircraft from different squadrons at different times. They are brilliantly done, but to read about each of them (and the color photos as well), you will have to look in the appendices. The appendices also contain a host of very useful information on Vigilante losses, surviving Vigilantes, each RVAH squadron, bases, and designation details.

I would have liked to have seen better cockpit illustrations, but with that minor exception, I have nothing to critique about this book: it is a superlative account of a superlative aircraft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ask the Man Who's Flown One
Aviation history usually is produced by dedicated enthusiasts who have never flown the airplanes they describe. In fact, many competent authors have never flown anything. But Bob Powell's history of the Vigilante is unusual in that he not only knows the subject, he's flown the RA-5 and "waved" it as an LSO.The result is an unusual depth of knowledge for this topic and for the Osprey series on combat aircraft.Tracing the development of heavy attack in the US Navy, the text describes the design and development of the beautifully crafted "Vige", its combat employment...and something more.Within the "VHA" squadrons there emerged an esprit and sense of community that remains unsurpassed not only in the navy but in military aviation. The pride and satisfaction of mastering a demanding aircraft are part and parcel of the RA-5 story, and are well described here. ... For anyone who has participated in youth football to any degree, this book will bring back a lot of memories (good and bad).I am a Floridian living in Texas.I cannot begin to count the number of arguments I have had with Texans concerning Texas vs. Florida football.I was really hoping this book would show up Friday Night Lights and prove that FLA reigns supreme.Sadly for me, it did not do the trick. This is a quick read and will entertain, but it lacks some of the emotional depth of F.N.L.This may be more of a regional favorite describing South Florida very well, but I'm not sure New Englanders or those in the Midwest would find much of the cultural and geographical references all that interesting.I did like it, but just not enough to recommend buying it.
