anthroposophical astrology
This book helped me to begin bringing togother areas which had remained fragmented in my mind. For example, astrology and the chakras to name two. I had already been told that I should see the relations between the chakras and the planets as a sort of inner sky, but that knowledge had remained an abstraction until reading this book.
I especially appreciated the manner in which Powell related each chakra to a given planet. I felt like it gave me much deeper insight not only into how the planets affect me but how my own chakras relate to one another.
His research utilizing Tycho's astrological system which enables chart readings based on both geocentric and heliocentric reading was also interesting. According to Powell, the helicentric reading can tell us about how the spirit seeks to direct consciousness toward the future and the geocentric reading reveals more on past karma affecting the present. He gave numerous examples of reincarnated individuals based on the research of Rudolf Steiner.
If other writers build on this work, I think that astrology will be revolutionized in the future. I only wish I had access to this sort of astrological reading because I am not particularly skilled in this area.

The Feminine God
If you are like me you have always felt there was something missing in modern religion...the feminine side of God.This book helps explain what happened to that aspect of the divinity when the Catholic Church gained control of Christianity and made it completely male-oriented, condemning any sign of femininity to silence and dishonor.

Christ and the Maya Calendar approaches the significance of 2012 by spiritually penetrating phenomena of today. Drawing on the book of Revelation--which provides an archetype for understanding spiritual history, as well as on Rudolf Steiner's Apocalyptic indications, a completely new context for grasping the end date of the Maya calendar emerges. In a November 1919 lecture, Steiner made a stunning remark about Ahriman: "Ahriman skillfully prepares his goal beforehand ... [and] will find an important instrument for preparing his incarnation. His incarnation is undoubtedly coming, and this lack of insight will enable him to prepare it triumphantly." The subtitle of this book--"2012 and the Coming of the Antichrist"--refers to this coming incarnation of Ahriman. In fact, Steiner narrowed the timeline for Ahriman's incarnation, saying it would come "before even a small part of the third millennium has run its course." Just after Christmas 1919, Steiner revealed more about the impending incarnation of Ahriman, saying almost offhandedly that Ahriman's name might be "John William Smith." With this remark, he clearly pointed to the incarnation occurring in the English-speaking West, while other remarks made it is certain Steiner meant that the incarnation would take place in America.

In addition to penetrating the spiritual background of our time in relation to the coming of the Antichrist (the incarnation of Ahriman), the authors explore the significance of the Mexican mysteries and present a wealth of new research with the intention of helping the reader to navigate the Apocalyptic scenario currently shaping up, with the global financial crisis as one important expression. Most important, the authors refer to the Second Coming of Christ as the true event of our time; the incarnation of Satan/Ahriman is its shadow. The authors also show the significance of Divine Sophia as the antidote to negative consequences of Ahriman's incarnation.

Finally, as a positive manifestation of the world of spirit in our time, the book discusses the significance of the young anthroposophist, Judith von Halle, who since Easter 2004 has born the stigmata, the visible signs of the wounds of Christ.A Note on the Title

The word Antichrist is used in the title and throughout this book, and there are at least two ways in which this word may be understood. The more general use of the word is found in the Bible and in Christian tradition, in which the Antichrist is understood to be the human being who bears the incarnated Satan (also called "Ahriman" in Persian tradition and, in Revelation 13 in the Bible, "The Beast"). This is how the word Antichrist is used in this book.

However, this general meaning should be distinguished from another, more specialized use of the word, as found in the spiritual science of Anthroposophy, which often uses the word Antichrist to designate the Sun Demon, known as Sorath in the Hebrew tradition, referred to as the "Beast whose number is 666," and as "the two-horned Beast" in Revelation 13. Incredibly Interesting... a must read!!!
A very interesting read indeed. It's great to have more information to ponder on the "mexican mysteries" lectures Steiner gave. Although some what flawed in it's approach to getting everything to support their "Revelation Code"...

Excellent book !
This review won't reiterate Laughton's review which outlines the book well. I thought the first section written by Dann was very well done. All those players among the Mayans were confusing for me, so I made a "Who's Who"list of the primary individuals discussed. The names are Spanish, long (15 letters), and unfamiliar. Unlike some historical accounts Dann's section flows like a novel which kept me engaged.It establishes an excellent background for Powell's huge contribution which follows,which is totally extraordinary!This is a deep, expansive subjectwhich I cannot yet grasp but can behold with utter awe andwonder. I like the way Powell explains deeper meaningto what we mortals might construe as ordinary-ish contemporary events. In other words, there are no accidents in lifeor in our history. Everything has deeper meaningand do we/can we apprehend it? Powell helps us do just that and in this way his book is inspiring. I have taken some workshops with Powelland his teachings are at a depth beyond my expectation and comprehension yet he is able to pull his readers/followers into a different realm of knowing.These are important times and he is an important messenger.I have read this book twice, bought an extra one to loan to othersandI am grateful for every word Powell writes!

split down the middle
I am familiar with the work of Rudolf Steiner and so was interested in seeing what the anthroposophical take would be on the 2012 predictions.This bookwas very interesting but instead of being a collaborative effort, it came in two parts with two very distinct voices.While the first, Kevin Dann, was well informed, he didn't seem to me to have the spiritual depth of understanding that Robert Powell had.In fact after reading the first section, I found myself very distressed.Robert Powell seemed to be able to take the same information and redeem it.In general, a thought provoking read.

A Great Contemporary View of Steiner's Work
This is an excellent book! It is well written, timely, and does a great job of tying together the correspondences between various faiths, including Maya, Aztec, Ancient Vedic/Hindu, and Christian. And, it is well grounded in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, as well as other exceptional seers of our time. This is a very worthwhile book for anyone interested in: the apocalypse, as represented in the Book of Revelation; the Second Coming of the Etheric Christ; the approach and mission of the Divine Sophia; the redemption of Lucifer; and, the juxtaposition of the inversion of Satan/Ahriman and how the opportunity of this incarnation can be used for the benefit of human evolution. Highly recommended.

Too often overlooked
Nuclear Deterrence Theory is a very important work for students of strategy.Unfortunately, the book was published near the end of the Cold War when interest in nuclear strategy was waning.Consequently, it is not remembered as the important work that it is.

During in the Cold War, there was a very large debate amongst students of strategy and national security about how to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons.Numerous books were published on topics like brinkmanship, MAD, limited retaliation, and first strikes.In many ways, Nuclear Deterrence Theory is the culmination of this literature and the answer to many of questions posed within it.

In Nuclear Deterrence Theory, Powell uses game theory to address the topics listed above.His analysis shows that there are widespread misconceptions regarding some of these topics.Moreover, the use of game theory provides insights into new dynamics within nuclear strategy.In general, although this may not be his aim, Powell causes the reader to appreciate how much warfare has changed since 1945 and how new ways of looking at strategy are needed.

Some readers might worry that the use of game theory, and the accompanying mathematical formulas, would be drawback to the book.However, Powell's writing is sufficiently explanatory to enforce his points and make the game theoretical analysis clear. ... Read more

Kindle version doesn't allow for pictures to be viewed. Made some areas more difficult to follow. Nothing too exciting in the book but was a decent read.

Smart, witty and with a sense of adventures of a centuy ago
To be true to the reader og this review I should state that I was for a long time a scout and in being so a long time reader of BP. Regardless his funny and agile writing makes for a very pleasant experience of reading. It will be an interesting read for people who like history specially the XIX century or even for an aspiring detective or CIA agent as it shows practically some principles of intelligence and information gathering.

Bits of Adventure from Someone Who Lived It
The author, Robert Baden-Powell, was a British soldier and spy, and also founded the Boy Scouts.The author's love of adventure is evident in this book, which is a collection of 1- and 2-page essays.

After a short series of essays defending espionage as being both useful and honorable, the remainder of the book explains spycraft of the time and particular incidents in which Baden-Powell directly participated.The stories are interesting, and would certainly appeal to many young readers.Occasional use is made of the author's own illustrations, including sketches of fortifications modified for secrecy to resemble much more benign subjects (insects, stain glass windows, etc.) which were spirited back to headquarters.

On a historical note, this book is reminiscent of other adventure books by European authors in roughly the same period (Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle).

Titles published by Dover tend to be inexpensive, and this book is no exception.Even at full retail, this book is a steal.

Dated but inspiring
Lord Baden-Powell's autobiographical treatise on the basics of spy trade craft is dated, around a hundred years old at this point.The technological innovations since then have changed many aspects of the intelligence profession.On the other hand, the work is inspiring.B-P's passion for human intelligence collection is contagious.Based on this work, it is clear that he loved what he did for the thrill and challenge of it and it was a fringe benefit that it served his country (I am not questioning his patriotism, but his writing makes it clear that his work was his true passion).

There are numerous vignettes to illustrate different techniques and principle of tradecraft, mostly with some humerous aspect.My personal favorite was the incident where B-P was collecting on German fortifications in the Balkans.He walked through the German military site drawing pictures of the facility, was stopped, and was able to walk away without being detained.How did he pull this off?It was the butterfly net, book about butterflies, sketch book full of drawings of butterflies, and having the nerve to ask the German soldier if he had seen a specific butterfly.Where were the sketches of the fort?Concealed inside the drawings of the butterflies....

The book is short and aimed at 10-15 year olds, but is enjoyable to anyone with an interest in espionage or the history of espionage.

Caveat: If you are a parent and feel that a career in intelligence is not acceptable for your child, keep this book out of your child's hands!

Scouting for Boys
Something I was looking for to give as a gift for adult scouters. It was a great item and they all enjoy it.

Get a new introduction!
Great book, terrible intro.What were the publisher's thinking?Do they want to sell books and have this recommended or not? The Intro by Elleke Boehmer is so longwinded (39 pages) and so derogatory toward the Scouts and it's founder it's mind-boggling.She obviously has no respect for the organization, and the sparse accolades she dispenses are only a cover in my opinion so she can degrade and dissect the Scouts two-fold thereafter.I recommend `Boy Scouts Handbook: The first Edition, 1911' (the Dover publications version) until they reprint this book with a positive and uplifting intro; one that makes you want to read or buy the book in the first place.

Lateness
I wouldn't recommend buying this product. I ordered it over a month ago and I still haven't got it. Amazon says I probably have to wait another month... so if you like waiting a loooong time for your products, go ahead and buy this one.

Even though I haven't still received my book, Amazon has been sending me e-mails daily asking me to write a review about the product. Up until now I thought: "I can't write a review, i still haven't got my damn book." But then I realized that reviewing was a perfect way to show amazon, and its future customers that I am really pissed about this slow transportation methods and the constant e-mails.

Some of the information in this book may now be out of fashion and sometimes wrong, it is a great pleasure to read "Scouting for Boys". The ideals defended by B.P.: courage, generosity and compassion are as much a necessity today as they were a hundred years ago, when that book was first published.

The idea of an active, "hands on" education still find its echo in today's most recent education innovations.

Nice little story
This is a pleasant and well-written little story, but nowhere near the excitement of Day of the Jackal and other top Forsyth books.

I, too, like some of the other reviewers read this book many years ago and have never forgotten it. Recently I wanted a book for a friend and not wanting to loan my copy of The Shepherd ordered another copy. Other reviewers have mentioned the plot so I will simply say DO read this book. You will come away better for having read it and perhaps you too will remember it 25 years from now...

Forsyth Surprises but Also Charms
Forsyth has produced a charming novella that strays some from his traditional suspense stories.While you won't be surprised that there is a surprising twist at the end, this heartwarmer is perfect for the holiday season, and a nice opportunity for younger readers who have not experienced his classic masterpieces to try him out.

A fine easy reading novella with a bit of suspense.

A 1950's British fighter pilot runs into mechanical, weather, and fuel problems.Things are bleak until a mysterious escort (The Shepherd) in a vintage prop driven fighter shows up as an escort towards safety.I'll leave it at that.

The story is more than a bit predictable and the reader can easily "see it coming".Still, Forsyth sets the bleak winter scene well and with appropriate British decorum. Forsyth's experience as a pilot brings insight to the flight aspects. Beautifully and masterfully illustrated by Lou Feck (all editions, hardcover to MM paperback).
