Product Description
Richly detailed, BORDER LIFE captures the intimate universe of those who colonized Kentucky and southern Ohio during the Revolutionary era. In reconstructing the mental world of border inhabitants, Elizabeth Perkins draws on the records of an Ohio clergyman who conducted hundreds of interviews with survivors in the 1840s to provide a vivid portrait of pioneer life in the words of the settlers themselves. 10 illustrations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent background book for genealogy
I bought this book because I understood that a few of my ancestors were quoted in it; as a genealogist, I look for every mention of my ancestors possible! But this book brought home the staggering (to me, I never said Iwas smart) fact that not all conflict between settlers and Native Americanstook place on the plains. Many, many conflicts took place right here inthe midwest, in Ohio, Michigan, etc.And this book provides an excellentdescription of the people and events of this period of settlement. It addsa dimension to my research, and is an fascinating study. ... Product Description
Maxwell E. Perkins, famed editor of such literary luminaries as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurston, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Thomas Wolfe, was a man whose personal and professional lives often intersected. Nowhere is this more evident than in his correspondence with Elizabeth Lemmon, the Virginia socialite who became his long-distance confidante. Despite the platonic nature of their relationship, others realized the intensity of their connection. The letters contained in As Ever Yours, published here for the first time, reveal an epistolary love story-and they provide fresh insights into Perkins the man and Perkins the editor.

Max first met Elizabeth in 1922 at the Perkins home in Plainfield, New Jersey. Immediately drawn to her stark beauty and southern charm, he struck up a correspondence with her that lasted until his death in 1947. As Ever Yours contains 121 of Perkins's letters to Lemmon as well as the 20 extant letters from Lemmon to Perkins; the rest are presumed lost or destroyed. Letters from Fitzgerald and Wolfe also shed light on the pair's dynamic relationship.

The letters make for compelling reading as Perkins details his personal life in New Jersey and Connecticut and his professional life in the New York publishing world. The writers he discovered, edited, and encouraged at Charles Scribner's Sons emerge as endearing and believable characters, brought to life in Perkins's vivid narrative voice. He is witty, self-deprecating, and painterly in his descriptions of people and locales together with the social milieu of his day. Protected by distance, Max used his letter-writing relationship to unburden himself in a way he could not with his coworkers, his authors, or even his wife-and these letters simultaneously highlight his editorial judgment and disclose his private feelings.

Expertly edited by Rodger L. Tarr, As Ever Yours will be important to students and scholars of the history of publishing. The Perkins-Lemmon letters illuminate the thoughts and experiences of the greatest literary editor of the twentieth century.

"When I found these cigarettes you had left I thought at first to keep them as a rememberance. But I am far from needing a rememberance."

Product Description
Interest in, and commitment to, an evidence-based approach to clinical and medical practice has grown over the last few years. This has fuelled a debate about evidence-based health promotion. While few would argue about the principle that all health-promotion practice should have its basis in sound evidence, there is a lively discussion about exactly what this means and the ways of achieving it. Through the experience of health-promotion practitioners and academics from a variety of professional backgrounds, Evidence-based Health Promotion considers the theory and practice of:

  • Assessing existing evidence
  • Collecting new evidence
  • Making decisions when the evidence is imperfect&/UL;
This volume will challenge those involved with health promotion to think more broadly about what ‘doing the right thing’ and ‘doing things right’ mean, and to use this thinking to inform their practice is, therefore, essential reading for those who are involved in health promotion as part of their practice, health-promotion specialists, managers responsible for purchasing or providing services, and students. Also from Wiley: Health Promotion: Philosophy, Prejudice and Practice (1997) David Seedhouse Managing Health Promotion: Developing Healthy Organizations and Communities (1995) Ina Simnett ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Amusement
Having a book to categorize guys seems to be a perennial favorite. I remember when I was a teenager, I had some sort of a "guide to love" that figured out which guys and girls would match up best based on their signs. It's funny how these books always seem to be written FOR women, and ABOUT guys. I imagine guys just go for whoever seems sexiest to them - while girls are hoping for something a little more meaningful.

To her credit, Elizabeth Perkins warns you up front that no person is ever going to be 100% like their Sun Sign. Astrology - assuming you believe in it of course - is a complex science. It's not just where the sun is - it's where the moon is and all the other planets. That is why two people who are both "Capricorns" can be wildly different. The exact location, date and time down to the second all affect how the sign behaves.

Still, you can get a general idea of how a given guy will act - and how well it will match up with your own personality. If you believe in astrology, you can say it's because of the planets. Even if you don't believe in astrology though, it's worth noting that if someone is told from the moment they're born that "Oh, you're an Aquarius - you're creative" - it reinforces that trait in the person. So in a way, the fact that a large number of people believe in astrology and are promoting it, it means that children growing up actually start to be the way they're told they "should" be.

That all being said, I have a few issues with this book. The first section of the book is a basic overview of what guys are like based on their sun sign. Capricorn - "Coffee, chocolate, Capricorn men ... some things are just better rich." I realize this is in jest, but are we really back in the days that women only cared about a 'rich man'? I know several miserable women who have wealth but cry themselves to sleep.

Also, some of the definitions seem VERY narrow. I know the standard definitions for a taurus. My dad is one, my boyfriend is one. My stepmom was an astrologer. Comfort, home, tradition. But here they say he ONLY eats meat and potatoes. I don't think so. They always finish projects immediately? Hah!

The second section is on women - i.e. "to know yourself" - with little quick reviews on how that woman relates to the various signs. I think any woman could spin to any sign at random and identify with it. The descriptions are all rather vague. I realize that's part of astrology - it has to fit 1/12th of the entire human population - but still, with the guy section being laser-focussed, it's the opposite to have the women's section be so general.

It's also a little tough that pretty much every pairing is described as being a challenge :) None of them are recommended as 'easier' - they are all going to be difficult, just for different reasons. It's of course healthy to realize that any relationship requires work and daily effort to succeed - but does it have to be so rough in life?

A great deal of fun, as long as you take it as a way to explore your own needs and the needs of your partner without tying down either of you to the set, printed description.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Resource
A clever and insightful book to keep on your bedside table, the Star Guide to Guys is amusing and well-written. Whether its observations are actually accurate or not, it provokes reflective thought and is certainly good for a few laughs. And admit it... astrology is kind of a fun fascination! While one might suspect that this is the type of book you read once- my friends and I have found ourselves using it as sort of a reference book whenever we meet anyone new. Easy to read, it is broken up into two parts- one that deals with men by star-sign and another lengthier section that deals with women by star-sign and then discusses their compatability with each other signs. ... Product Description
In Translations of the Letters of a Hindoo Rajah, Elizabeth Hamilton engages directly with the major issues of her day, from colonialism and the "New Philosophy" to the present state of literature and female education. Satirizing British society and incorporating material from a wide range of the orientalists' new translations of Indian writing, Hamilton's book is a key document in the debates which raged in England over the British role in India. It remains one of the most interesting political novels of the 18th century. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A true satire
This book is satiracal about so many 18th cent. issues including women's education, christianity, and british foriegn policy. It is a hard book to follow with a bunch of characters that are only in the book briefly. It is very funny and the country mouse in the city effect is very well done.Hamilton took this character and really breathed life into him.The only draw back would be the number of characters that appear briefly for very little effect throughout the novel. ...
