Excerpt: Simon Charles Pendered MacCorkindale (born 12 February 1952) is an English actor, director, and producer. MacCorkindale was born 12 February 1952 in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, the son of Gilliver Mary (née Pendered) and Peter Bernard MacCorkindale. He has a younger brother, Duncan. His father was a Group Captain in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and a station commander. MacCorkindale spent part of his chilhood in Edinburgh where his father was stationed. He attended the exclusive Haileybury and Imperial Service College in Hertfordshire from 196570, where he was Head Boy. He also joined the Air Training Corps and initially had plans to join the RAF, but at 13 his eyesight began to deteriorate. He considered joining the diplomatic corps and becoming an ambassador but become a fan of theatre and instead opted to become a stage director. Convincing his parents that he would get a "sensible job" if by 25 a directing career was not sustaining himself, MacCorkindale attended Studio 68 drama school rather than university. He took acting classes there as well so he "could better understand actors and, hopefully, be a more competent director." He became a "star pupil" and continued acting after graduating "until felt confident enough to" direct "a seasoned performer". He began an acting career and toured the country with a repertory theatre group. MacCorkindale's first professional stage part was in A Bequest to the Na... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2614946 ... Excerpt:The Bishop of Ely is the Ordinary of the Church of England Diocese of Ely in the Province of Canterbury . The diocese roughly covers the county of Cambridgeshire (with the exception of the Soke of Peterborough ), together with a section of north-west Norfolk and has its see in the City of Ely , Cambridgeshire, where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity . The most recent bishop was the Right Reverend Dr Anthony John Russell John Russell , BA, DPhil, the 68th Lord Bishop of Ely , who signed +Anthony Elien: . The Bishops of Ely now reside in the Bishop's House, Ely, the former Cathedral Deanery. Dr Russell became Bishop of Ely in 2000, translated from the Diocese of Oxford , where he was Bishop of Dorchester from 1988. On 23 April 2009 he announced that he would retire on 28 February 2010. He duly retired on that date; his successor is yet to be named. The roots of the diocese of Ely are ancient and the area of Ely was part of the patrimony of Saint Etheldreda . Prior to the elevation of Ely Cathedral as the seat of the diocese, it existed as first as a convent of religious sisters and later as a monastery. It was led by first by an abbess and later by an abbot . The convent was founded in the city in 673. After St Etheldreda's death in 679 she was buried outside the church. Her remains were later translated inside, the foundress being commemorated as a... ... Read more

Product Description
On August 21, 1940, a Nazi raider torpedoed the British merchantman Anglo-Saxon and machine-gunned the survivors as they tried to escape in their lifeboats. One little boat escaped with seven men. Five of them perished, but Robert Tapscott and Wilbert Widdicombe endured for seventy full days and 2,300 miles to landfall on the other side of the Atlantic. This is the almost incredible account of their ordeal - one of the most thrilling stories of the sea that almost never came to light."It has seldom happened," writes William McFee in the introduction, "that a narrative so circumstantial, so entirely stripped of all humbug and false sentiment, has come out of the depths of the sea, to inspire us with admiration for human valor." Two Survived is an unforgettable true story of survival against the very longest odds. (5 1/2 x 8 1/4, 218 pages, b&w photos) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Survived
Glad I missed this little adventure.
A German Raider attacks and South American bound British frieghter, which is hauling coal... and blow it's to bits on a dark night. Written and published during that war, it's tale of high sea advanture and survival. A must read. Why? thos who forget the past and condemned to repeat it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, very authentic
This was a very good book, so authentic you almost feel part of the hapless crew of this boat. The strong point is, it was written during the war, and it was not edited afterwards.. Luckily for us readers. You get a very authentic feel of how things were seen then. Excellent, well worth reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story
This is an excellent book. All Brave Sailors by Revell Carr covers the same story in much greater detail and is also recommended highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story -not well written
This is an amazing survival story but I think it could have been written better. This story was written in 1940 or 1941 right after the events described take place. The copy of the book I have was printed in 2001. Even though it is 60 years later they still say things like "they can't say where the convoy was headed because of security concerns...." I think 60 years later it is fine to know where a coal cargo ship is heading. There are several things like this in the book - it just shows 60 years later they didn't even spend a few minutes updating some minor details. That's minor stuff.

What I thought was worse was the way the author wrote the book. He starts of the first few pages telling you most of the story... who dies ... who survives... how long it all took... where the survivors finish their journey.I think that is a very poor way to tell a story. It's like watching a five minute edit of a movie just before you see the whole movie - kind of ruins most of the suspense. It's a good story but I would recommend skipping the intro & reading it at the end of the book. The guys endured some terrible events for sure. I do think it is worth reading if you like survival stories - it is one of the most amazing survival stories ever.

A much better read I would recommend is "Adrift".

5-0 out of 5 stars Peabody's Mermaid book
If you loved the movie, you will love the book. Like most books to movies there are slight differences, but I loved it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fish tail
I believe this book is the only fiction I have ever read authored by a husband-wife team.I think it would have been a stronger story had it been written from either the male or female perspective and edited by the other. However, it was successful enough to have a movie made from it.

The premise of a middle-aged man being attracted by an enchanting singing siren is an archtype that harks as far back the voyage of Odysses but the story strikes an odd, too-even handed tone that never really allows it to take off.It is also an examinination of the social interactions of the upper class on a Carribean resort island but isn't really done as well as Ian Fleming who set several early Bond adventures there.Personally, I wasn't very pleased with the ending either.

The out-of-print, smallish yellowed book I bought here on Amazon was celebrating the release of the motion picture made from it.It had a cute photo of William Powell and his "mermaid" on the cover.

What should be some quiet time for them turns intone big party and the Organizer of the party insisted the Peabody's' foot the bill.

They just had to meat all the exotic people that live on the island. Naturally Mrs. Peabody is flirted with and even Arthur is being corralled.

He manages to borrow a boat from the local caretaker and plans on doing a little fishing to the consternation of his wife and dog. I need not tell what is finally caught and fearing evil spirits the household help runs off. His wife suspects hanky panky. And the situation snowballs from there.

If you get a chance, you will want to watch the movie with William Powel "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid"
