Meet the man behind Tubular Bells
I'm halfway through the book and I agree with others here that it's a book that is more about his life experiences than it is about his music. I've followed Mike's great music since the advent of Tubular Bells in '74 and I've always wondered what he must be like. Now I know. That's why I like the book. Mike is very candid and seems very humble. The book is a bit scattered and unorganized but who cares...such is life. To me, reading the book seems to recreate what it must be to just sit around a coffee table and listen as Mike just chit-chats about whatever crosses his mind at the moment. It's intimate like that. I feel drawn to him as I read it because our childhoods were apparently very similar. There are some glimpses into his music. And I am enjoying reading about what musicians influenced him. I like learning his likes and dislikes. So, I think the book delivers - but what it delivers is a little unexpected. I feel that any Mike Oldfield fan will find the book enjoyable so I recommend it.
UPDATE: I have completed the book and I like it even more now than I did when I started this review. As I progressed through the rest of the book there was more shared about his composing than I origanally thought there might be from having read the first few chapters - so that delighted me. There wasn't the depth in his discussions about his music that I had hoped for - but there was enough to make me happy.

As A Writer, Mike Makes A Great Musician
Oldfield's music has been a big part of my life since 1973, and although I've been vaguely aware of his various psychological difficulties -- shyness, panic attacks, borderline autism -- I never thought much about them.His autobiography deals frankly with them in illuminating detail, more than it deals with his music or musical inspiration.He is a singular artist and these insights into his psyche make for fascinating reading.

Unfortunately (as another reviewer noted) Michael has chosen to write without a ghost writer.Surprisingly for someone so capable of weaving musical lines together, his writing is scattershot and ill-organized.Incidents from his childhood and adulthood collide, without common themes, and he frequently takes off on tangents which interrupt the flow.It's a stream-of-consciousness style with odd weight given to minor incidents and major sections of his life -- wives, kids, music -- barely mentioned.Understandably prose is not his area of expertise, but he has done everything else he's attempted so extremely, extremely well that the bar was higher here.Even Mick Fleetwood's autobiography was better written than Changeling.

Oh well, it's still nice to add it to my Oldfield library.

Details?
Oldfield has written this without a collaborator, which is a shame -- a skilled author might have extracted more details about things we really care about, particularly his music. Most of his works pass by in this book with only scant mention about how and when they were recorded, and he actually gets a few out of sequence. Such small matters as musical partners, and even wives and children, are barely mentioned at all -- perhaps to protect their privacy, but you would at least expect a few words about them.

Still, it's likely as close a look inside his head as his fans will ever get.

A great book
I didn't expect such a good book. Oldfield opens his hart to the reader, in a humble, and very conversational stile. You can almost hear him speaking to you like a friend. You will discover the complexities of his psychology and understand the high price that Oldfield has paid for his talent. The book is mainly centered in his first three records and his childhood. I wish the book would have another 100 pages and cover his thirties and forties a little bit more in depth.

Much better than I expected...
I really wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this, but I found it very enjoyable. Mr. Oldfield's writing is very conversational and he appears not to be a bitter person despite personal difficulties. I agree with much of what the prior reviewer stated, I would only include that much of the book is devoted to his childhood through the first three albums. He seems to gloss over everything from Incantations on. Compared to most "rock star" biographies, Mr. Oldfield places a heavy emphasis on influences and the creative process. I must have it!
After reading the two reviews available, I doubt that there is any truth in this book.However, I am a true M.O. fan and must have it anyway.I will also buy Changling, M.O.'s autobiography, and compare the two just for fun.Can't wait to get them!

Quite Disappointing
I tend to be more curious about the music and how it was created than about the personal life of the man himself. In both categories, though, this book disappoints. I have no idea what qualifies Moraghan to write about music -- literally: there is no "about the author" information included. In terms of musical insight: let's just say he gets the time signature of the opening of "Tubular Bells" wrong and leave it at that.

There are internal contradictions in the book: he describes the album "Discovery" as a "return to form" then writes that only one song works.

Moreover, despite being published in 2006, it stops with "Tubular Bells II" -- which came out in 1992.

Add to this the unpleasant design of the book and poor proofreading ... it's just not worth your time.

I am torn
This is a must have for any Oldfield fan. Good info but YIKES! Did anyone proof this thing? Man, chock full of misspellings, typos, wrong titles/wprds and bad kerning. Keep it away from your English teacher & you'll enjoy it. ... Read more

A great early group history reference.
This book is a good Dire Straits reference if you are looking forthe earlier era of Straits. But if you are looking for a complete biography, this book will not do very well. Being published in 1984, it really only covers less than half the bands history.(They both recorded and toured until the early nineties.) However, the period it does cover, it covers superbly. The author has known Mark Knopfler, Straits lead guitarist, since Knopflers teaching days in london in the late '60's and has followed the Straits closely up to the time the book was published. The book by Till Lindemann's father helps understand a few things about the lead singer of Rammstein
Werner Lindemann, a well-known East German writer of children's books wrote this memoir about the time he spent with his son, Till Lindemann, the future lead singer of the world's most famous German rock band Rammstein, in the late 1980's. The events described in it had taken place a few years earlier, when Till (here called Timm) was 19 years old. This book is a unique opportunity to get a look at Till Lindemann's life as a teenager, through the eyes of his father, an abusive, violent alcoholic, who'd been divorced from his mother for seven years by the time his son came to stay with him for a while. The dynamics of the relationship between the father and his son provides quite a bit of insight at what had shaped Till Lindemann's personality, influenced the lyrics of the songs that he has written for Rammstein, and his life in general.
Werner Lindemann died in 1993, the year before Rammstein was formed, so he never got to find out that the "trouble teen" he describes in his book was going to become one of the most distinguished and admired rock stars of our time. Till Lindemann reportedly has never visited the grave of his father after the funeral. Reading this book might help you understand why. It might also help you understand Till Lindemann.
Originally published in 1988, "Mike Oldfield in the Rocking Chair, Notes of a Father" was reprinted in 2006. Despite its very misleading title, it has nothing whatsoever to do with Mike Oldfield. Vivian Stanshall provided the voice of the "Master of Ceremonies" who reads off the list of instruments at the end of the first movement. The piece was later orchestrated by David Bedford for The Orchestral Tubular Bells version and it had three sequels in the 1990s, Tubular Bells II (1992), Tubular Bells III (1998) and The Millennium Bell (1999). Finally, the album was fully re-recorded at its 30th anniversary in 2003 as Tubular Bells 2003. A newly mastered and mixed re-issue of the original album appeared in June 2009 on Mercury Records, with bonus material. On 6 June there were international bell ringing ceremonies to promote the release.
