O'Brien was born William Joseph Patrick O'Brien to an Irish-American Catholic family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He served as an altar boy at Gesu Church while growing up near 13th and Clybourn streets. O'Brien attended Marquette Academy with fellow actor Spencer Tracy, and later attended Marquette University. Reportedly he also served with Jack Benny at Great Lakes Naval Station during World War I. O'Brien appeared with James Cagney in nine feature films, including Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) and Cagney's last film, Ragtime (1981). He began appearing in movies (many times playing Irish cops or priests) in the 1930s, starting with the role of ace reporter Hildy Johnson in the original version of The Front Page in 1931. ... She is currently a member of the London City Council, representing Ward 6 (University district), elected in 2006. Nancy Branscombe was born and raised on military bases in Canada and overseas. Her fathers final posting was to Kingston, Ontario where they stayed for the next 25 years. The definitive classic work on the subject of women alone.
The author's definition encompasses not only women living by themselves, but those psycologically dependent on husbands and alone inside a marriage, along with many other situations. She (the author) mixes her own experiences with experiences of women she interviews. She successfully creates a beautiful reference for women and men coping with how to make decisions under many circumstances. You so much admire how she moved from a 1950's dependent housewife to a strong person, able to cope with the many obstacles anyone can face in finding an identity.This book is one of the finest works I have ever read on any subject. ...
