Product Description
Laura Nyro was a beloved and pioneering singer-songwriter of the 1960s and 1970s, whose songs were covered with great success by the Fifth Dimension; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Three Dog Night; and Barbra Streisand. This first biography uncovers previously never revealed details, including a love affair with Jackson Browne, and her relationship with painter Maria Desiderio.

Unappreciated in her time, Nyro’s legacy is currently experiencing a revival. With her groundbreakingly honest and passionate lyrics, her unusual and innovative rhythms and melody, Nyro’s influence is still felt by singers and songwriters today.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have loved Laura Nyro for over 50 years
I haven't finished reading this book yet, but what I've read so far is illuminating into the genius heart and soul of Laura Nyro. The author makes it clear in the prologue that he's not interested in delving into her personal love life, rather he talked to the musicians she worked with, to get a feel for how her creative process works. There are some clues from family and friends about certain names that show up in her songs i.e. she dated someone named Tom, which inspired Tom Cat Goodbye from New York Tendaberry (in my opinion her best work). I would highly recommend this book. Book bought from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Well-written, accurate and revealing, this book paints a portrait of Laura that I only speculated about for years...I loved the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Loving Tribute To A Great Singer-Songwriter
When this book came first came out four years ago, I was delighted to see it on the stands. Finally, Laura Nyro was getting her due, or at least SOME of her due.But oddly enough, I didn't find myself rushing out to buy it despite my being a fan of long standing. I wasn't so sure I really wanted to know all there is to know about Laura Nyro.I mean, sure, I had read dozens of magazine articles and reviews back in the day.I knew the rough outlines of her life, certainly, but her relative inacessability as a "public figure," made Laura Nyro "the artist" all the more intriguing as far as I was concerned. It may sound corny to some, but she revealed herself so completely through her music that it wasn't clear how necessary it was to know ALL the details.

I needn't have worried.SOUL PICNIC does not rob Laura of her mystery, does not seek to explain away her allure.Author Michele Kort is plainly a fan, but she did not know Laura personally, and doesn't try to create the impression that she has(or IS) the last word on all matters Nyro. There's still plenty of mystery to go around. But, like any good journalist, Kort pigues your interest about her subject. You come to know Laura Nyro a little bit better maybe. You also come to realize that you can never know her as intimately as you might wish.

I occasionally heard gossip about Laura Nyro back in the day.Even as a teenager growing up in a small town in Maine, some of my friends said knowingly (usually while taking a deep drag on a cigarette) that Laura was "gay" or "bi-sexual, doncha know?"How else could you explain that back cover on ELI & THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION?There was even a former runaway in one of my English classes, a girl recently returned from a crash pad in the East Village, who claimed to know Laura and had these little snippets of gossip to impart. It was all very interesting, but even at age 16 I knew that was NOT the pointOr at least, not the whole point.

Michele Kort's book actually implies that Laura did not actually have a relationship with another woman until quite late in her all-too-short lifetime. There was always those ambiguous lyrics to "Emmie," of course, and apparently she hinted to high school friends that loving another woman might be but one option open to her, but there is little evidence that even experimented much in that direction as a young woman.

Does it matter?Well, it does suggest that Laura, who was still in her teens when she started her career in the music biz may NOT have been leading the intense boho lifestyle that my runaway friend had depicted. On the other hand, what she was conveying in her music, even at that tender age, was as wild and free--and ultimately, as revolutionary--as anything coming out of the West Coast at the time.It may have just taken a little while for her life circumstances to catch up with her inner reality.

And for a few short years in the late 60s and early 70s, there was no one making music as intense or as vital as Laura Nyro.Unlike the early Joni Mitchell, she was only minimally influenced by folk music, even though her records often ended up in that section of the store. (Where else did you file a solo female singer-songwriter in those days anyway?)And, of course, Peter, Paul and Mary had covered "And When I Die" already, but anyone expecting a Joan Baez clone or a "Sweet Laura Brown Eyes," was in for a surprise.Nowadays it comes as no surprise when a woman refuses to be dainty and to play it safe, but to sing with the unbridled passion that Laura Nyro brought to her early work was pretty darn revolutionary in '67-'68.Sure there were other women breaking down sound barriers at the time,Janis Joplin and Tracy Nelson were belting the blues in San Fran and, of course, even during the folk scare days of the early 60s, there were not-so-ladylike powerhouse singers like Judy Henske who were stomping the blues when they weren't churning out Childe ballads.

But what Laura was doing was different still. It was less blues based than Philly Soul and Motown influenced. And throw in a dash of jazz, of Broadway, gospel--and OK, OK, some folk and classical influences, and you get the idea.Laura was the very embodiment of 60s eclecticism. You could even say that she was influential in getting Joni Mitchell to loosen up a bit, musically--although I have to say that while the latter artist admits that she took "some direction" from Laura, her roving sensibility have eventually led her in a more experimental direction anyway. But Laura actually got there first, and it's a crying shame that she is not more widely acknowledged as the innovator that she was, or for that matter, that nowadays she's scarcely acknowledged at all.

So Michele Kort's book offers something of a corrective to that sorry state of affairs. And it does so, by focusing as much on Laura Nyro's musical life as it does on the her biography. And believe me, I am fine with that.Had the book been more gossipy, I really would have felt that I was violating the privacy of one of the most elusive artists of her day,of any day really. I have to take issue with the capsule review from LIBRARY JOURNAL included above. When the anonymous author of same writes, ... there is perhaps too much minutiae regarding studio sessions, musical arrangements, chord variations, personnel changes, and industry infighting," I find myself shaking my head in amazement. The creative process, good sir or madam, the MUSIC is the thing.Yes, some might find such matters as her "ambiguous" relationship with David Geffen more, uh, "interesting" I suppose, but it wouldn't have mattered much if Laura Nyro's WORK weren't the product of genius.

Michele Kort's focus is really just right. It is her love of and feeling for the Art of Laura Nyro that makes her life's story so important.Laura was always true to her muse. And she deserves our love and respect for that. And Kort deserves our thanks for this compelling, generous and warm look at the life and art of one of the 20th century's great songwriters.

Reviewer: jane from USA
A very thoughtful, well researched, and sensitive book describing the music and style of Laura Nyro. This book uncovers Laura's musical journey. It reveals a unique and uncompromising artist, whose drive toward emotional and musical honesty surpassed any desire for fame. Laura's unique sensibilities and moralities about her musical gifts were clearly integrated in an unusual style. The book reveals and integrity of spirit, while a quirky, unrelentingly controlling musical direction, that could drive others crazy. A great book for those seeking a greater sense of Laura's creative journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stoned Soul Delight
In my opinion, Laura Nyro continues to be one of the most underrated songsmiths in the history of American Music. While some record stores still file her under "Folk Music", Nyro's primary musical inspirations were pop, jazz and the vocal R & B and doo-wop stylings of the 50's.She also had an affinity for show music and her circle of friends included Broadway Icons Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Her poetry was unique, as well. No woman before her had explored so many controversial and personal issues in their lyrics as Nyro did. Since little has been written about this Great American Artist, Kort's book is a welcome read and fills in alot of the spaces that fans have been wondering about regarding this very private person. The book is a little light on depth, however, and it reveals itself as more of a record of rememberings by people that were part of her personal and music business worlds, either fleetingly or for long periods of time.Kort treats her subject with great respect and reverance, however, and her affection for Nyro as an artist and as a person is reflected throughout this book. Although this book will, mainly, be of interest to Nyro's longtime supporters, hopefully people who are curious about who this woman was, and the art that she created, will go out and buy her music. If you have never heard her before, nothing can prepare you for CD's like New York Tendaberry or Christmas and the Beads of Sweat. She was a shining star, a visionary, and a pure artist who paid dearly for her musical vision. We will never see the likes of her again.Love you, Laura, RIP. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not What Laura Would Have Wanted
This glossy-covered, personally intrusive, poorly arranged, and overly simplified congomeration did not reflect what Laura would have wanted. The first collection of her songs is the most beautifully thought out and presented amalgam of this brilliant and unique songstress' musical and artistic productions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what Laura would have wanted
Glossy, impersonal, poor arrangements, nosey intrusions into Laura's own stage notes...I found this offensive and just commercial. The first Laura songbook was gorgeous from cover design/photo, selected drawings, photos, and great arrangements. This is a poor, poor sequel. It is not what Laura would have wanted to express her music, thoughts, ideas, and certainly not emotions.I hope lyrics and reminiscences gets back to the earth mother and sister we all love.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but lacking
I'm not a musician. I bought this just out of interest & wanting to know more about how Laura thought and background. I would think a musician would want sheet music to play the songs as they were written by Laura, not as arranged by someone else. Where is the original opening of "To A Child"?

Her hand written notes are interesting but presenting them as a collage doesn't allow the reader to really see them. Very interesting how some verses or lines of a song she released had at one time been part of another song either released or unreleased. Did she really have to write down her on-stage banter?

The accompanying cd is a disappointment. Three songs is fine but why are two of them covers of someone else's songs?? Doesn't make sense when it's part of a songbook of her music. The cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'" is great though--better realized than his own version cause she expresses that word in both the music and her singing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful guide, and very nicely presented
"Time and Love" is a useful guide to playing many of Laura Nyro's better-known songs. It is edited by Milt Okun, who produced her first album. Although Nyro's songs were piano-based, the book also provides arrangements for guitar, which are surprisingly effective, considering Nyro's use of complex chords, often with notes added or ommited.

The book doesn't convey the full complexity of Nyro's own piano-playing, or her use of unpredictible tempo changes. However, it gives a good insight into the structure of the songs, and familiarity with her music should overcome such problems.

The songs are arranged as well as can be expected in a book of this type, and better than many I have owned. The choice of songs is good, although there are very few songs from her later albums (nothing at all from "Smile", "Nested", or "Live at the bottom line"). Still, we get "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Blackpatch", and "Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp", and those three alone make this book worth buying, in my opinion.

The book is beautifully presented, unlike any songbook I have ever seen. It contains many photos, paintings by Laura, and some interesting extracts from her journals. These reveal an artist who took her work very seriously, but also had a sense of humour (her comments about fans who objected to her performing "Wedding bell blues" made me laugh). There is also an interview with Laura about her songwriting, which is an interesting addition.

As if the book wasn't already a must for any fan, it comes with a Cd containing three unreleased tracks, including an excellent Stevie Wonder cover (Creepin').

Overall, this book is excellent. Although not comprehensive (let's hope for more books like this), it is a great introduction for anyone who wants to play Laura Nyro's songs. And it even goes some way towards showing the artist behind this incredible music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could do much better - not what the student needs
"Time And Love" is the second songbook of seminal singer/songwriter Laura Nyro (1947-1997). However, the first one has been long out of print so for those (like me) who are curious about a theoretical study of her songs, this songbook is a useful purchase. However, on receiving it from amazon.com surprisingly early, I was initially impressed, but ultimately there are many faults to be found.

Glancing through "Time and Love: The Art and Soul of Laura Nyro" does clearly give some clues to the extraordinary complexity of chords and tempo changes that made New York Tendaberry and the more difficult Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat extraordinary, ahead-of-their-time masterpieces. Laura Nyro, in contrast to the expectations of rock critics of this and subsequent eras, would never resort to loud three-chord rock. Yet, the notation used in the book is unclear - no exact tempos and very little understanding of the structures that her songs, on close examination, do actually have.

Even on her most "rock" material, such as "Beads Of Sweat", guitar players (there Duane Allman) were never allowed to indulge in heavy solos. Instead, they moved remarkably fluently with the groove of the song and its rises and falls. Most of her material was complex, many-chord and piano-based, with the added difficulty of a complex, multipersonal narrative style that can easily baffle critics. However, it was this combination of soft textures, spiritually themed lyrics and multipersonal narratives that paved the way for such works as Hounds Of Love, Little Earthquakes, Victorialand and Days Of Open Hand.

Yet, there is a flawed focus here (as on "Stoned Soul Picnic - The Best Of Laura Nyro" and "Time And Love - The Essential Masters") on songs that other artists had hits with. Notwithstanding that without the publicity thus generated, Laura Nyro's own recordings, being so innovative and idiosyncratic, would almost certainly have sold so poorly that Columbia would probably have dropped her before her first comeback in the late 1970s (Tendaberry and Miracle actually sold enough copies to be profitable), this alone could never make Nyro significant six years after her death.

Today newcomers really need to understand Nyro's role as an influence on such artists as Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, Tori Amos and Suzanne Vega, not the fact that she wrote hits for the Fifth Dimension and Barbara Streisand (how strange would that appear for someone who inspired "Running Up That Hill")??? For a reasonably-priced songbook, this would necessarily mean deleting some of the songs the Fifth Dimension and Streisand covered.

Except for two tracks from her last Columbia album ("Walk The Dog And Light The Light"), nothing not found on Stoned Soul Picnic or Time And Love - The Essential Masters is here, not even "Captain For Dark Mornings", "Tom Cat Goodbye", "Brown Earth" or "Map To The Treasure". Also missing is a taste of Nyro's jazzy late 70s period, which produced the brilliant but accessible "Money" and "I Am The Blues".

There is also little discussion of the character and structure of Nyro's songs that would allow a reader to appreciate why they have became so significant - instead there are copies of handwritten pages from her journal that do little but scratch the surface of what Laura Nyro was doing in writing and recording, and how she did it.

On the whole, just a useful reference - not comprehensive. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better, but no legacy
Lovely, simple, classy, touching...like Laura, but not nearly enough to catch her essence.Beats the kort bio by miles. The little vignettes are perfect, though skimpy.Thanx to Vivino and Sebastian...two moving, insightful tidbits. The back cover says she died at 40...wrong!...it was 49...and this is important.Laura was into the details and this should not have been missed.
New cd out this Tuesday..."Spread your wings and fly..."I can't wait!

4-0 out of 5 stars finally
I ordered this in January & I understand there were some problems with the publisher. OK I'm patient.

It's a book of her song lyrics arranged by album, with The Morning News and a poem that was printed on the Nested jacket. The last title Coda, I don't think was actually written by Laura, but was a cover song as a hidden track on Angel In The Dark. (If that's true I hope no one sues) There's not much extra except a few hand written scribbles, mostly set sequences. Speaking of a few extras: it would have been better, since this is supposed to be Laura's "poetry", to include writings that she did not record as songs. Obviously someone has all of her notebooks to cull through and reveal the unknown writings of Laura Nyro--like the early version of Man In The Moon that was more of a children's song.

The comments by those who knew her and worked with her give insight but why a full page for a few sentences? Rickie Lee Jones' essay turns out to be a great commentary.

The CD is a disappointment. Snatches of Laura talking about her craft with lots of white noise so she's hard to understand and it's very chopped up. It's not an interview at all. If this was a project Laura really wanted to leave as a legacy (as the book states), more care should have been taken with it. The early demo of And When I Die shows the Nina Simone influence and Lazy Susan has Laura singing in a deeper voice.

For those who love Laura Nyro's music, buy it. It's worth having. ... Read more

Excerpt: "Wedding Bell Blues" is a song written and recorded by Laura Nyro in 1966 that became a number one hit for The 5th Dimension in 1969 and subsequently a popular phrase in American culture. The song is written from the perspective of a woman whose boyfriend has not yet proposed to her, who wonders, "am I ever gonna see my wedding day?" The song carries dual themes of adoring love and frustrated lament. Promotional poster for Nyro's 1966 single release.Nyro wrote "Wedding Bell Blues" at the age of 18 as in effect a "mini-suite," featuring several dramatic rhythmic changes a trait Nyro expanded on future albums. It was to be recorded in 1966 for Verve Folkways label as part of what would become her More Than a New Discovery album. However, producer Herb Bernstein did not allow Nyro to record this version, which led to Nyro more or less disowning the entire album. What was recorded was fairly similar in content and arrangement to the later, much more familiar 5th Dimension version, albeit with a somewhat more soulful vocal line. It was released as a single in September 1966 and remained on the Billboard Pop Singles "Bubbling Under" charts segment for several weeks, peaking at #103. The 5th Dimension had already found hits with Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Sweet Blindness" during 1968. When recording tracks for their upcoming album The Age of Aquarius, producer Bones Howe suggested it would be amusing to record another Nyro song, this one about a woman trying to get someone named Bill to commit to marriage. As it happened, 5th Dimension singer Marilyn McCoo was engaged to another member, Billy Davis, Jr....http://booksllc.net/?id=12432882 ... Read more

Excerpt: Laura Catherine Schlessinger (born January 16, 1947) is an American talk radio host, socially conservative commentator and author. Her call-in radio program occasionally features short monologues on social and political topics, but is mostly made up of her responses to callers' requests for personal advice. Schlessinger's answers have been variously characterized as direct, wise, to-the-point, abrupt and cruel. Her website says that her show "preaches, teaches, and nags about morals, values and ethics." Previously, Schlessinger combined a local radio career with a private practice as a marriage and family counselor, but since going national she has concentrated her efforts on the daily syndicated The Dr. Laura Program, and on authoring self-help books. A television talk show was launched in 2000, but it was short-lived. The Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives, and The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands are among her bestselling works. Schlessinger was born in Brooklyn, New York to Monroe (Monty) Schlessinger, a civil engineer, and Yolanda Ceccovini Schlessinger, an Italian war bride. She grew up in Brooklyn, then on Long Island. She was an only child for eleven years until her sister, Cindy, was born. She has described her childhood environment as unloving and unpleasant and her family as dysfunctional, ascribing some of the difficulty to extended family rejection of her parents' mixed faith Jewish-Catholic marriage. Chapters: Katharine Mcphee, Laura Nyro, Jim and Jean, Brazilian Girls, Bob Lind, Brian Blade, Verve Forecast Records, the Bridges, the Hombres. Excerpt:Bob Lind (born Robert Neale Lind, in Baltimore, Maryland , November 25, 1942) is a folk music singer/songwriter who reached the height of his success during the 1960s. Lind is best known for his transatlantic chart hit single , "Elusive Butterfly ", which was a #5 hit in 1966. Career Lind signed a recording contract with Liberty Records ' subsidiary , World Pacific Records , in 1965, and it was on that label that he had that particular hit. The single may have done even better in the UK Singles Chart had he not had competition from established British recording artist Val Doonican , who released a cover version of the song. In the end, both versions of "Elusive Butterfly" made #5 in the UK in the spring of 1966. Lind also wrote "Cheryl's Goin' Home", which was covered by Adam Faith . It was Faith's last British hit. Over 200 artists -- including Cher , Glen Campbell , Aretha Franklin , Dolly Parton , Eric Clapton , Nancy Sinatra , The Four Tops , Richie Havens , Hoyt Axton , and Petula Clark -- have covered songs written by Bob Lind, but as a recording artist, he remains a one-hit wonder . Lind retired from the music business in 1969 to pursue other interests. In more recent years he has resided in Florida and works as a writer . He is the author of five novels , and has written for such supermarket tabloids as the Weekly World News and the Sun . Lind returned to the music business in 2004, when he began performing again and established an official website. In 2006, RPM Records re-issued the album Since There Were Circles , and in 2007, Ace Records (UK) released Elusive Butterfly: The Complete 1966 Jack Nitzsche Sessions. The British ban... ... Excerpt: New York Tendaberry is an album by New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. It was released in the autumn of 1969 on the Columbia Records label, some 18 months after its predecessor, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. It is generally considered by rock critics and Laura Nyro aficionados to be her greatest musical achievement. The album was helmed by Nyro, with the assistance of producer and engineer Roy Halee. New York Tendaberry is also considered to be the second in a trilogy of classic original Nyro records, with Eli and Christmas and the Beads of Sweat on either side. They are all considered musically and thematically similar, although New York Tendaberry is by far the most intense and stark. In 1969, Nyro was one of the most popular pop songwriters, and various groups including The 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night, and Blood Sweat and Tears had enjoyed hits with her compositions. Thanks to the strong word of mouth trailing her work, New York Tendaberry became her most commercially successful record, peaking at #32 on the Billboard 200, formerly known as the Pop Albums chart. The 5th Dimension reached US #27 in the Pop Singles chart (the Hot 100) with their version of "Save the Country," while artists including Barbra Streisand recorded "Time and Love." In 2003, the album was ...http://booksllc.net/?id=2247361 ... Read more

Excerpt:Charles Ives Charles Edward Ives (October 20, 1874 May 19, 1954) was an American modernist composer . He is widely regarded as one of the first American composers of international significance. Ives' music was largely ignored during his life, and many of his works went unperformed for many years. Over time, Ives came to be regarded as an "American Original". Ives combined the American popular and church-music traditions of his youth with European art music, and was among the first composers to engage in a systematic program of experimental music , with musical techniques including polytonality , polyrhythm , tone clusters , aleatoric elements, and quarter tones , foreshadowing many musical innovations of the 20th century.Sources of Charles Ives s tonal imagery are hymn tunes and traditional songs , the town band at holiday parade, the fiddlers at Saturday night dances, patriotic songs, sentimental parlor ballads, and the melodies of Stephen Foster .Biography Charles Ives, ca. 1889Charles Ives was born in Danbury , Connecticut in 1874 , the son of George Ives, a U.S. Army bandleader in the American Civil War , and his wife Mary Parmelee.
