Product Description

Product Description
This examination of the causes, severity, and implications of racially stereotyped media coverage of Congress incorporates original analysis of congressional media coverage and interviews with congressional press staff. The news media often portray African-American members as being primarily interested in race, overly concerned with local matters, and wielding little legislative influence. By contrast, the images African-American members attempt to project of themselves are more complex and comprehensive than the images the media communicate. The authors offer a psychological explanation for this phenomenon, the Distribution Effect, in which those who are numerically rare in an occupation tend to be lumped together rather than treated as individuals. Their findings suggest that it is the media, rather than members of Congress, who are responsible for the racialized images that appear regularly in the press. This results in an advantage for white incumbents trying to attract votes but presents an obstacle to be overcome for African-American politicians. ... Read more

Product Description
Nine in ten Americans believe the media are biased. Trust in journalists ranks beneath that in lawyers, and even the media themselves regularly portray their own industry as slanted toward Democrats and liberals. These perceptions, however, do not coincide with reality, as David Niven reveals in his bold new take on an often-debated subject. Tilt? The Search for Media Bias presents the first comprehensive review of the charges, the evidence, and the effects, beginning with a simple but altogether overlooked premise: to measure media bias or fairness, one has to have a fair baseline with which to compare coverage. Using situations in which presidents, governors, mayors, and members of Congress from different political parties have produced the same results in office, Tilt? compares media coverage of Democrats and Republicans in situations in which they clearly deserved equal treatment. Niven's findings, unmistakable and consistent, reveal that when the output of politicians is the same, media coverage follows--a conclusion that is as provocative as it is timely and necessary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, yet profound
With his meta-analysis of happiness research, author David Niven distills the science of happiness into 100 happily bite-sized gems. Each chapter can be read in less than three minutes and contains a human-speak summaryof the particular research finding,as well as advice and an example to make the finding more accessible and applicable.Even just a look at the chapter titles (including ones like: "It's Not What Happened, It's How You Think About What Happened,""Do Things You Are Good At,""You Always Have a Choice," and "Realize That Complete Satisfaction Does Not Exist") provides quick, yet potent, pointers to the path of happiness. This book is akin to the Cliff Notes version of finding happiness--the essence of the comprehensive story is all here. David has found a way to make the top 100 findings of happiness research profoundly simple to understand and apply. Now, that's something to smile about. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Here It Is, What Are You Going To Do With It?
This is a great book for anyone aspiring to heighten his or her level of happiness. It's a book that challenges the spirit, and asks the question; are you ready to jump into a life of happiness, or do you just want to sit on the sidelines? Several times while reading I felt convicted that I wasn't trying my hardest to be happy, when I was finished I felt like I knew what I could to become happier. This compilation of shorts is like a 365-day calendar, everyday a new page to gain inspiration from.
In my opinion it was an awesome anthology. The book was filled with short stories, research facts, and quotes to live by.It gave me an opportunity; happiness is in our lives we just have to reach out and grab it.I felt supported by a few of the stories I read throughout. There was a piece about religion and how you should never let your religious beliefs fade. There are always people out there trying to bring down someone's religious beliefs, this made me feel like I had someone else on my side.
The book fit into my life.It had the same type of facts in the book as there are in my life. There was another story that talked about being aggressive with your family or friends.Like arguing or just not expressing your feelings how you really feel or want to.Some of my friends tend to be aggressive and I feel like it puts up a barrier between us. When I read this it gave me insight on how to deal with these situations.

Product Description

Insufficient healthcare coverage,  a weakened economy, the fragile environment—most people would be hard pressed to find even one example of how things are better today than they were yesterday.  How about one for each day of the year?

In his engaging and informative new book, Up!, David Niven, the best-selling author of the 100 Simple Secrets series (more than a million copies sold in the U.S. alone), gives us 365 examples of how life is better now than ever before. We think we’re running out of time—but we actually live twice as long as our great-grandparents did. We think our culture is in decline—but worldwide IQ scores are higher today than ever before. We think life keeps getting harder—but the percentage of people who feel happy is growing every year. Well researched and full of insight, Up! not only proves that life today is a vast improvement from the past but also that it continues to get better with each passing day.

For those who need convincing or for those who need reminding, Up! is a great resource for appreciating how far we’ve come and realizing that, in all ways, things are truly looking Up!

5-0 out of 5 stars UP! YES! Absolutely UP!
Appreciating news and views that are optimistic and energizing is always a detail I desire.Television, newspapers, magazines, websites and blogs news can often dwell on that which is NOT right, NOT good and much worse than in prior years. That type of news certainly can drag people down, a person down, even a nation down.I certainly don't need to give examples.....they are EVERYWHERE.What Nirven accomplishes quite eloquently and effectively in his work here is to point out how life is REALLY "UP!".

I have always appreciated a quote by Charles Swindoll.... paraphrased, "Life is 10% of what happens to us, 90% how we respond to what happens to us."I also believe, "Life is HOW we look at things."With that in mind, Nirven does a most refreshing and delightful "adjusting of our lenses" toward the world and what is in our world with this work. This book can also be a daily devotion if one chooses.I couldn't stop reading the positive words and messages that I found myself half way through the book in my first sitting.

I highly recommend this book ....especially if you seek a series of NEW looks at facts and thoughts to reflect on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Niven is great
I am a sucker for research. I don't like to think about gurus sitting around in a cave somewhere dreaming things up. Niven's series of books offers substance to what he offers. Empirical studies aren't a sure thing, but they're a lot better than most of what's out there on the market. Families have never been an easy puzzle to figure out, but thisbook takes us up the mountain.

I'd recommend this to anyone who is in a family and is open to new ideas. Great read.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read, but Scientific?
This book is a pleasant and inspirational read. It's a good book to pick up and put down, as each chapter is independent of one another and takes only a few minutes to read.I question its claim that it is based upon "the research of noted scientists," as a quick scan of its reference pages show that a high percentage of the studies cited come from doctoral dissertations.Hardly the stuff that "sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating".

I questioned some of the more startling claims made by Dr. Niven based upon some of these dissertations, but even going to the universities' websites, I was unable to obtain copies of the original papers in order to determine the accuracy of his interpretation, and indeed of the studies themselves.A search of the authors of the dissertations did not indicate that they had gone on in any way to distinguish themselves in their field.

So, that being said, I have found it an enjoyable book to read, but one that I will not be relying upon for necessarily accurate information or statistics.I give it a 4 for enjoyment and a 2 for credible research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Gold!
There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people where you just know they would approve. David Niven always seemed to play the good guy, the hero, the sort of person to whom we would all wish to aspire. Writing about those people with whom he worked and came into contact was, however, a serious departure from acting - and could easily have gone so horribly wrong.

In this book, however, he confirms his credentials as a writer and pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes. Not once does he stoop to the level of gossip monger, not once does attack another person.

Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of writing humour.

Was it me, or did I detect a certain disappointment from within his own relationship?, or was it that David Niven was far too much the perfect gentleman to describe such things.

If you are a fan of the olden days - the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy this book. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy this book. In fact, I cannot think of anyone who would not enjoy such an excellent product.

Probably nobody under the age of 59 has ever heard of David Niven, but he was one of the last suave actors in Hollywood. He had an amazing life, and the hilarious details of making movies in the 40's-60's are beautifully told here...the book is laugh-out-loud funny, and worth re-reading.I had this book about 20 years ago and somehow lost it, so I HAD to replace it.That's how good it is.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The First of the Few, known as Spitfire in the United States, is a 1942 British film directed by and starring Leslie Howard as R.J. Mitchell, the designer of the Supermarine Spitfire, alongside co-star David Niven. The film's score was written by William Walton ("Spitfire Prelude and Fugue"). The film's title alludes to Winston Churchill's speech describing Battle of Britain aircrew: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
