Product Description
Story Musgrave has an insatiable passion for life. From his childhood on a dairy farm in western Massachusetts, to payload commander on the Hubble Space Telescope rescue mission, share Story’s incredible physical and spiritual journey as he relates to the world, and the universe, around him. Based on a thematic biographical style, this intimate portrait of one of the world’s greatest thinkers, explorers and aviatorsis revealed through the eyes of Story himself, his family, friends and colleagues. Story is an American hero, renaissance man and, arguably, NASA’s greatest unofficial spokesperson - certainly one of the few with real vision and authenticity. This book has wide appeal to a variety of audiences. It is a human journey which happens to take place largely within the framework of the space program, but also encompasses themes such as mechanics, flying, nature, spirituality and humanity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and Inspiring
What a great read about one of my favorite astronauts.I wondered sometimes if Story was an extraterrestrial of some kind; you really do not meet persons who think the way Story does.I enjoyed the space poetry throughout the book; it does change your views about space and beyond Earth travel.I gladly reccomend Story The Way of Water if you are looking for an astronaut biography that transcends traditional methods and thinking.Be prepared to leave this star-crossed world behind!

2-0 out of 5 stars book - Story NASA
The book came with the cover on upside down. The text on the pages was upside down from the bound cover with a color photo front cover. It was a gift, my husband didn't think it was cute.I was amused. He wanted me to send it back. So, I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Humorous Entertaining
Amazon has asked me to review this book.I haven't finished it yet but so far it parallels my expectations.I heard Story Musgrave (what a name huh?) lecture at the Kennedy Space Center.Earlier in the morning, before we went in to hear him talk, one of the guides at the Kennedy asked us who our speaker was going to be.When I told him, he laughed and said , "You never know what's going to come out of that guy."He was right.I went right out and bought his book.Buy this book.Buy it for your sons and daughters.Take them to see Story. You won't regret it.Bill Best, Squaw Valley,California

We saw Story Musgrave give a presentation on Nature and Technology at the Kennedy Space Center. He is a wonderful presenter.Very dynamic speaker. He was having a book signing that afternoon for "Story: The Way of Water".We purchased a copy and are pleased that we did.We plan on passing it along through all three generations of our family as everyone will enjoy reading it. I just wish he would do a book of the photos he shared in his presentation - they are spectacular. What a great guy ! ... Read more

Product Description
We grew to push the aircraft and ourselves to the edge but never beyond. Like restless folks, we kept raising the bar, decade after decade, we always found another peak to climb.(Story Musgrave). In 1967, Story Musgrave became an astronaut. During his thirty years with NASA, he flew the T-38 supersonic jet, now celebrating fifty years since its creation. This timeless beauty became central to Story s NASA world and to his six space flights, during which he routinely carried a camera to capture its grace and performance. According to Story, the T-38s will continue to maintain the spirit of the organization, the astronauts, and mission control. This stunning collection of private photographs puts you right in the middle of the action. For the space enthusiast and photographer, Story provides a first hand account of the people and planes, giving us a fascinating insight into the culture of the NASA flying world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Incredible Book!
This collection is a work of art as well as a salute to NASA's T-38 Talon Aircraft. I am a pilot and each page was a jaw dropping experience. Dr, Musgrave has captured, not only in breath-taking photography but also in 'from the heart with love' narrative. As I turned each page, I was in the cockpit, on the flight line and in 'The Cathedral' with him.

If you love photography and/or aviation, this book is inspiring! This little rocket of a plane has been a tireless work horse for NASA and this book is an awesome tribute to that aircraft.

Dr. Musgrave, a true American hero, has again crafted another masterpiece.

Well Done!

5-0 out of 5 stars An aeronautic photographic love story
There are lots of pretty picture books of airplanes. Many of them are very nice. But this is something more. It's special. This is a long love affair with one beautiful woman, the T-38, photographed over 30 years by NASA legend and six-time Space Shuttle astronaut Story Musgrave. Thirty years gives a whole lot more chances for the perfect picture than any one-day photo-shoot.And Story had the technical skills, the eye, and the passion to capture many stunning moments of magic.

The book is rounded out by some photos of the insides of T-38s, details of when and where all the pictures were taken, the feelings of flying the supersonic NASA corporate jet, and some of its history. It's intimate, like a professional photographer's personal collection of pictures of his girlfriend turned wife taken over 30 loving years. If you've seen the SR-71 books by Brian Shul you know what kind of aeronautical excellence to expect. Can you tell I like the book?I hope this review gives you a good feel of what to expect. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clan curiousity
A well researched book, more an academic work than a sensational biography
yet not lacking in action.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Tale OfOld Texas
I learned quite a bit about my own family by reading this book.My great-grandfather Jonas Quimby Musgrave was George West Musgrave's uncle. The uncanny resemblance both in personality and facial features to current members of my family is remarkable.More importantly to the general reader however, this is a book that will really give you insight into the life of a real Texas Badman at the turn-of-the-century.The book was extremely well-written both scholarly and entertaining in the annecdotes presented revealing of the time and the chief character.
What is also reviewing in this book is a relationships among the various citizens and desperados in the brush country of South Texas. There you'll find Musgrave's hanging around with Pancho Villa and other Mexican pistoleros., in the international brotherhood of gunfighters and shootists. The folks back then didn't pay much attention the borders. It is a true glimpse of the past were men's allegiances were to their family and their friends not to nations. The only thing that kept George West Musgrave from being one of the most legendary bandits of the old West was the fact he never got caught and died with his boots on.If you want an example of a real Texan, not the kind that emigrate from New England and think a "Bowl of Red" is Manhattan clam chowder, this is a book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I read the other reviews and, after buying this book, was deeply disappointed. It reads more like a history book and is difficult to follow. It is jumpy and not smooth in the books flow. Without knowing the area, the canyons and ridges all run together but the book is written as if everyone reading it has intimate knowledge of the area. It was also hard to keep up with all the people because, once again, the book jumps around so much.

Nothing about this book flowed at all and the stories were disjointed. All in all, I was extremely disappointed with this book and would not recommend it to anyone looking for an easy reading, smooth flowing narrative of this outlaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absorbing biography
The collaboration of biographer Karen Holliday Tanner and western history expert John D. Tanner, Jr. (Professor of History, Palomar College, San Marcos, California), Last Of The Old-Time Outlaws: The George West Musgrave Story is the informed and informative account of the notorious bandit, robber, and killer of the American Southwest, George West Musgrave (1877-1947), who was a charter member of the High Five/Black Jack gang, which in turn was responsible for Arizona's first bank hold-up as well as many other robberies. Only the ravages of failing health brought an end to Musgrave's crimes. Last Of The Old-Time Outlaws is enthusiastically recommended as being an absorbing biography of one of a rare oxymoron -- a successful career criminal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Musgrave weaves his tales with wit and wisdom . . .
In a short story collection of Musgrave's caliber, the dilemma becomes which tale to review from The Mayan Magician and Other Stories. With "The Mayan Magician," this compilation's lead story and namesake, Musgrave weaves a mystical tale of love, courage and resolute faith in the great Mayan Warrior God, Kukulkán. Musgrave's story revolves around a contemporary young Mayan woman, Isabel Velasquez, or "Dipsie Izzie," as she wows baseball fans and wins over male colleagues and skeptics with her almost-supernatural knuckleball. She becomes the first female pitcher for the minor league Yucatán Leones -- and later, the first woman awarded a major league contract, signing with the San Diego Padres. A million-dollar contract, no less.

Anyone, who is a fan of baseball -- or even those readers like me, who possess little more than a headline-recapping knowledge of the sport -- will appreciate Musgrave's erudite interlacing of baseball and the spiritual Mayan culture. Musgrave affords his readers the privilege of accompanying Isabel on her extraordinary journey of acclamation, unwavering faith in her Mayan religion, betrayal, kidnapping and the realization of true love. What more could you ask of a short story? I give this one a huge thumbs up.

Throughout the "other stories" in The Mayan Magician and Other Stories, Musgrave flexes his creative genius and satirical, oft times irreverent, humor as he navigates the reader through a cross-genre exploration ofdiversity, acceptance, greed, community, faith, political corruption, cyber-lust, conformity and the lack thereof.

Whether the vehicle Musgrave chooses to transport his fictional characters is a black widow using the internet to feast and fornicate, a hurricane with human-like qualities, a text-messaging mime or a depraved ride on Amtrak's Sunset Limited on the brink of its demise, this writer weaves his tales with wit and wisdom. Is there rhyme or reason to this anthology, an interrelated theme? No. Nor is there the coziness of chicken soup. But if you love short stories, thought-provoking reads and quality entertainment, The Mayan Magician and Other Stories will not disappoint. (Reviewed by Sharon Cupp Pennington, author of Hoodoo Money)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mayan Magician and Other Stories
I was introduced to the work of the author through his alternative historical fiction novel Iron Maiden. Beyond the extremely well researched and integrated storyline, I adored the realistic characters who seemed to come alive as I read.

Needless to say, when I got the chance to review another book from this author, I jumped at the chance. Despite that Iron Maiden and The Mayan Magician are not from the same genre, I am glad I did. Through perhaps a little more raw, the characters are just as vivid.

The Mayan Magician is an anthology of people stories. The genres and themes vary but it could be said that each work is about dreams and nightmares. They run the gambit from dreams fulfilled and dreams that fall flat to dreams that become perverted and outright nightmares.

There are a number of stories that stand out for me. The title of the book comes from the first and longest entry in the book. It tells of a talented female baseball player with a dream and a secret. The Peek-a-Boo Man is a chilling tale about an man with Asperger's syndrome who believes that children are being abducted and taken to a paradise without adults. The Reluctant Zombie is told from the perspective of a fallen soldier who is stuck in limbo until he gets a proper burial.

Each of the photographs was selected by six-time Space Shuttle astronaut and payload commander of the historic first Hubble Space Telescope repair mission, Story Musgrave.

Story Musgrave is renowned for his space photography and his knowledge of geography. For this beautiful glimpse of the remote continent, he has written pertinent and poetic captions to complement each of the images.

Excerpt: Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an African American physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Mae Carol Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, the youngest child of Charlie Jemison and Dorothy Green. Her father was a maintenance supervisor for a charity organization, and her mother worked most of her career as an elementary school teacher of English and math at the Beethoven School in Chicago. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois, when Jemison was three years old, to take advantage of better educational opportunities there. Jemison says that as a young girl growing up in Chicago she always assumed she would get into space. "I thought, by now, we'd be going into space like you were going to work." She said it was easier to apply to be a shuttle astronaut, "rather than waiting around in a cornfield, waiting for ET to pick me up or something." As a child growing up, Jemison learned to make connections to science by studying nature. "It sounds...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=201525 ... Read more

Product Description
