A Story of Love and Danger in Mughal-ruled India
This book is a biography of Arjumand Banu, better known as Mumtaz Mahal, which means "Favored Lady of the Palace"because she was the first and favorite wife of Prince Khurram, later known as Shah Jahan, when he overthrew his uncle to become Emperor of India.The book is based on the memoirs of Mumtaz's Chief Lady-in-Waiting, Sati Nisa and her experiences of living and travelling with Mumtaz and Shah Jahan before and after he became Emperor and up to when Mumtaz dies after giving birth to her 14th child at the age of 42.Shah Jahan was so distraught after her death that he built the famous Taj Mahal as a resting place for her coffin, when he died he was buried beside her.Legend has it, that before she died he had a full head of jet black hair and when she died he locked himself in his room for a whole week and would not come out and wouldn't have visitors and when he came out of the room his hair had turned snowy white from grief.I have been to the Taj Mahal and it is breathtakingly beautiful. The book follows not only Sati Nisa's experiences but gives in fascinating detail the struggle of Prince Khurram to stay a step ahead of his scheming and treacherous Aunt and Uncle who would willingly do him in, to remain Emperor and Empress of India.It also follows Mumtaz's personal heartbreak of watching seven of her 14 children died in infancy or as toddlers from disease or accident as she followed her husband every where he went and supported him in his quest for the Emperorship of India. It is a fascinating and wholly engaging book about this courageous and strong willed woman.I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history and a well written story.

The House of Marwar is an excellent read for anyone interested in Rajputhistory, traditions and mind-sets. The book focuses on the lineage ofMaharajas of Jodhpur (Marwar) from their humble beginnings, to the epoch oftheir power and to their eventual submission and absorption into modernIndia. The book is very easy to follow and one gains a personal level ofunderstanding as the book describes the very core of each ruler. Mr. Singhhas created a monumental history book that exceeds the characteristics ofjust another history book...he sheds ample light on Rajput beliefs andcustoms and focuses on both the accomplishments and excesses that made thema force to be reckoned with and eventually ties it in with their unwillinggarnishment of power to a modern india.
