Product Description

First published in 1957, My Baseball Diary chronicles James T. Farrell's enduring passion for the game, from his earliest baseball memory at the age of six through his reminiscences of his first World Series game in 1917 to his later meetings with and recollections of Hall of Famers Ray Schalk, Eddie Collins, Red Faber, Ty Cobb, and Gabby Hartnett.

(20080923)Amazon.com Review
More than 40 years old, and inconceivably out of print for 30of them, Farrell's Baseball Diary, one of the first gems in anew series of baseball reissues from Southern Illinois UniversityPress, is as rare as a starter who can go nine these days: an ancienttext that stays fresh on the wizardry of its ebullient prose. Farrell, who died in 1979, was a hard-hitting novelist and utility man-of-letters; his Studs Lonigan trilogy, which brilliantly mined the livesof the Irish working-class of Chicago in the early part of thecentury, was certainly a literary grand slam, a masterpiece ofAmerican realism. His Diary is less the formal journal of itstitle than a colorful collection of beautifully crafted remembrances, profiles, observations, and fictional excerpts that span the first 50years of his seven-decade romance with the game.

He writesinsightfully on Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins, and Ray Schalk, and quite poignantly on Buck Weaver, the White Sox third basemanshamed in the 1919 scandal. He conjures up his first game as a boy in1911 with loving detail, recounts going to White Sox games with hisRed Sox-fan grandmother, and recalls Mrs. McCuddahy's Tavern--theballplayers' home away from home--adjacent to Comiskey Park with aspirited fondness that's still infectious. All of that barely dentsthe top of the order of this all-star compendium from a writer worthyof his own niche in the Cooperstown of American letters. --JeffSilverman, Sports editor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars studded with diamond gems
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball."
--Jacques Martin Barzun
A bit maudlin, hokey, overly sentimental at times, and sometimes a bit too obvious in its observations, but nonetheless this is a grand appreciation of the game of baseball and the hold it's had on the American psyche since its beginnings, with a good bit of history -- American and baseball -- helping to tell Farrell's "diary." Farrell has seen and touched base with many of the greats of the diamond through the years.
A pure love of the game of baseball shines through, and Farrell also brings back the days when baseball players were genuine heroes who loved the game themselves and weren't the jaded malcontents they seem to be nowadays. Reading this made me want to go out and see a ballgame and pore through the boxscores in the newspaper. Favorite quote: Farrell talking about his Irish grandmother and how she became a rabid baseball fan: "She loved baseball and understood absolutely nothing about the game."
As an ode to baseball, I would rank this up there with the works of Roger Angell, Lawrence Ritter and others I may be missing.
Sidenote: As I read about Farrell and his brother attending White Sox games in the teens, I couldn't help but reference the kids in the movie "Eight Men Out."

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome back to the fold
After years of searching secondhand stores for "My Baseball Diary," I was delighted to find it back in print after a long hiatus. Farrell takes off his novelist's hat and delivers a straightforward homage to the game. Unlike George Will and others who have exhibited anunfortunate tendency to overanalyze baseball and lace their writing withsocial commentary, Farrell reminds us that we attach ourselves to the gameas kids, and forever after our love for it comes from childhood.

Mostremarkable are Farrell's clear and unadorned memories of the White Soxgames that he saw as a boy growing up on the South Side of Chicago. Hedevotes a great chapter to detailing a no-hit game he saw pitched by EdWalsh, one of his many childhood heroes. You feel with him the mountingexcitement as Walsh approached recording the final out of his gem.

Farrell also brings vividly to life the 1917 White Sox, the "No-HitWonders," who batted just .228 as a team but who went on to win theWorld Series handily. His admiration for the team is plain (and he writesconvincingly of the strengths of individuals on it), but he doesn't backaway from expressing the disappointment the infamous 1919 team deliveredhim. At the same time, we get from Farrell the point made much later byEliot Asinof in "Eight Men Out": that owner Charles Comiskey'seconomic abuse of the team contributed to the decision to throw theSeries.

Fans of the White Sox will appreciate the portraits of RaySchalk, Eddie Collins, Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Nick Altrock and manyothers. Farrell shows he was a close observor of the nuances of the gamefrom a young age and never slips into mere idolatry.

Overall the book isa fine evocation of baseball when the game and its players were moretightly integrated into the communities it served and fascinated. Farrellturns his writer's eye to the past and returns with memories bathed in thelight of childhood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reality, anyone?
what if a loud shirt really was loud? Or the number "5" was red? Or you could smell Beethoven? Nabokov was a famous synesthete, as was Kandinsky and Van Goght. There sense are intertwined, so that one sensory stimulation causes a reaction with another sense. This is a great book which makes you question how real our world is, how sure our senses, and how multidimensional things are.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent, though seemingly embittered
Speaking as a polymodal synesthete with eidetic memory, I found this work interesting (in terms of tracing synesthesia in art and literature from Baudelaire and the Romantics to Nabokov and the present day), but with an infused tonality of bitterness (lacking in empathic/human quality). After a certain point, it becomes clear that the author is biased toward a focus on the meaninglessness of these modes of perception, discounting them as relevant thought processes.Another view from the "outside", providing yet more separation between the synesthete and the non-synesthete... but I'm certain my opinion could be deconstructed by the views presented in this book.Recommended for historical content, and very basic information.Ignore the sweeping generalizations. ... Product Description
This book presents an extensive set of applied material dealing with financial and management accounting practice in the public sector. It is designed to be used in conjunction with one or more of the established texts on the concepts and principles of public sector accounting.

The authors present fourteen original case studies of financial and management accounting practice across a range of public sector organizations. The cases are grouped by type of organization because many of them deal with a number of reporting andmeasurement themes and issues, for example, principles and methods of financial accounting, issues of management control and financial management, and accountability to multiple stakeholders.

All the case studies contain accounting information extracted from published financial statements or internal management records. The book includes short cases, where students are expected to collect additional information themselves, as well as longer, more detailed cases which are intended to encourage students to sift through the data for the relevant facts. Each case concludes with discussion questions.

Detailed notes for discussion on the end-of-case questions are given in the Guidance Notes for Lecturers - available free of charge for those adopting this book for course use. ... Read more

The Way of the Lord is a book to be read with Christian pilgrimage in mind, whether one is traveling to the Holy Land physically or merely in heart and mind. He also sprinkles his narratives with reflections on the nature of pilgrimage generally and with discussion of vital contemporary issues related to the Holy Land. / Vividly evoking the sights, sounds, and smells of the Holy Land, The Way of the Lord is ideal for both individual and small-group study, for anyone planning a pilgrimage or for those just setting out on the spiritual journey of the Christian life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Verbal Pilgrimmage
Originally intended for those taking a trip to Israel, Tom Wright dramatically and skillfully points out that the true Holy Land is wherever believers are.He points out that a trip to the Holy Land may be of some value but not as a matter of 'earning points' with the Lord.An example of how he relates his "tour" to personal life is when he is talking of visiting Jerusalem.Located at 3000 feet above sea level, It doesn't take much of a journey on either side of Jerusalem to find oneself in a wilderness.Just as one may feel 'on top of the world'
one moment and the next find oneself in a physical or emotional wilderness. We have all been there.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.Once again Tom Wright proves he is one of the top theologians in the world, regardless of denomination or location.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Moving
This book starts out good and then just gets better and better with each new Pilgrimage. Wright takes the reader on a journey with such descriptive writing that one wonders if his degree is in literature, instead of theology and history.Wright deals with the idea of Pilgimage on the road to Damascus, at the Jordan, in the Wilderness, in Galilee where most of Jesus minsitry took place, in Jerusalem, on the mountain where God is experienced in transfigurative ways, Gethsemene, where the agony of purpose takes place, the Cross (the best chapter), the empty tomb and then reflections on current day Israel. This book will take you away and cause you to feel like you were on the mountain, at the Jordan and was a witness of the cross.Wright's reflections are insightful, powerful and moving.Get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Theologian
This will be brief. It is simply a statement about my "hero" in a sphere for which he is often not known, especially in the States. This book is the heart of Tom Wright, the pastor. Written as a pastor to part of his flock going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, it breathes the spirit of pastoral concern. At the same time it reveals a real knowledge of the Land - its history, geography, culture, and current struggles. For those who think that they know NT Wright, whether as friend or foe, it reveals what I like about him most - an academic who left the daily world of academia for pastoral ministry. And what a pastor he must be to his flock - now in the diocese of Durham.I have been to the "Holy Land" forty times and have read dozens of books on Israel, past and present. I will treasure this one more than any of them.I am in the process of buying up all of the copies I can, since it appears to be out of print.
Read it as preparation for your physical and spiritual pilgrimages. It is a wonderful guide to both.

5-0 out of 5 stars It can happen to you
As N.T. Wright notes, "It can happen to anyone. It can happen to you."

Wright's "It" is an unexpected encounter with Jesus Christ. Rarely do we see it coming. Wright makes this clear in the very first chapter of his wonderful book, "The Way of the Lord." He cites Saul of Tarsus' journey from Jerusalem to Damascus. It was no intentional pilgrimage. Yet by the time Paul reached the gates of Damascus, he was already embarked on a journey that would see him travel the world in service of his God.

And so it is for all who follow Christ. As Wright says: "One sort of pilgrimage ends, therefore, and a new sort of pilgrimage begins, with the empty tomb of Jesus." Though we may never travel further than ten miles from home, life in Christ is a pilgrimage. Wright's book illustrates this by comparing different facets of the spiritual journey with different areas Jesus traveled through in his sojourn here.

Each chapter Focuses on an individual area/spiritual facet of life. They are meant to be read sequentially, but I have gone back to several chapters since first reading them and each has its own lesson and can validly stand on its own. This makes this book an invaluable companion for anyone seeking to follow Jesus.

Life in Christ is a wonderful journey--it is truly life "to the full." "The Way of the Lord" is like a tour book of sorts. I give it my highest recommendation

4-0 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage for Beginners
The Way of the Lord.Christian Pilgrimage Today.Tom Wright.Grand Rapids: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1999.

On the face of it, pilgrimage would seem to be a venerable, natural practice. It is, infact, highly controversial. To be sure, it has its advocates in theJudeo-Christian tradition.Torah required three pilgrimages a year, one onPassover, one during the Feast of Weeks, and one during the Feast ofTabernacles (De 16.16).And St. Jerome even interpreted some of the Psalmsto be a command to make a pilgrimage. By contrast, however, Gregory ofNyssa went out of his way to criticize the practice, arguing that it isimportant to be close to God and one's neighbors and that pilgrimage madeno contribution to accomplishing either imperative. And in more recenttimes, C. S. Lewis asserted, "The significance of the incarnation isnot that God is a god of one place to the exclusion of others; it is thathe is a god of all places, active in his world . . . God is to be foundespecially in people; namely those in need and in the gathered community ofthe Church . . . It follows that to set off on a journey to grow nearer toChrist is at best a complex matter. It might be that the true search isamong those in need . . ."For the ardent pilgrim, Lewis commends thewords of Matthew 28.6: "He is not here; he is risen." Thereis a certain logic to Lewis's position, but at the same time, it misses animportant point.Pilgrimage is not about going to a particular place tofind God.It is about putting ourselves in a particular place so that Godcan find us. For people who struggle with the concept of pilgrimageand who are inclined to side with Gregory or Lewis, Tom Wright's brief, readable work on pilgrimage will be a welcome guide.Former Dean ofLichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire, England, and the new Canon Theologianat Westminster Abbey, Wright grew up in the evangelical tradition.Heheard little or nothing about pilgrimage early in his life and his firstexposure to the practice left him with doubts not unlike those expressed byLewis. But much to his surprise, he discovered that "one can learnto discover the presence of God not only in the world, but through theworld." This growing realization prompted him to write thissage little work that not only serves as an introduction to the practice ofpilgrimage but is also, by design, "a refresher course, from anunusual angle, on what might be called `Christian basics'."Usinglocations in the Holy Land where Jesus walked, talked, and healed, Wrighttakes the reader on a virtual pilgrimage, combining biblical scholarshipwith catechesis and inspirational challenge. But Wright is never facile ordogmatic. His closing paragraph provides a taste of the rest: "We donot go on pilgrimage, then, because we have the answers and want to imposethem. That would make us crusaders, not pilgrims; the world has had enoughof that, and I dare say God has had enough of that.We go on the pilgrimway, we follow the way of the Lord, because he himself is the way - and, ashe said himself, the truth and the life as well.We go to meet him afresh,to share his agony, and to pray and work for the victory he won on thecross to be implemented, and for his way to be followed, in Israel andPalestine, in our own countries and in the whole world." ...
