5-0 out of 5 stars I'm remembered of Charlie as I read this book.
When I think about bluegrass music I'm reminded of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Dock Walsh and many more (hundreds more actually). Bluegrass Detour hit the tune I was looking for. The author surely hit the nail on the head. I loved Christopher's poems inside book. I sat back remembering my days in Virginia country. We did grow up with a backporch. My uncle played the fiddle like no other in them back woods of Virginia and we made stilled wine. You could hear the cords echo in the trees, sometimes folks would come up on the property listening to Charlie busting out that violin.

I grew personal to Charlie. After reading this book I can speak wisely about the author's attempt on specific songs. Some of the songs Charlie fiddled were inside this book. Uncle Charlie reminded me of Charlie Poole the first part of book. Bluegrass Detour touched my life. I'm so glad I read this book.

Bluegrass Detour is packed with song titles. I was amazed on how much work was put into this book. I could only imagine fifteen years writing inside this book. I did see the author state ten years. Bluegrass Detour clearly has the roots established in songs and artists listed therein.

Del McCoury Band (Foggy River 1991), The Lynn Morris Band (Kisses Don't Lie 1990), Yonder Mountain String Band (Easy As Pie 2001), The Brother Boys (Darkest Day 1993). I found some goodies. I was well pleased and did order some MP3 online. I would have never found these songs if I didn't read or open this book.

BAND NAME..... BRIEF INTRODUCTION..... BAND MEMBERS..... SONGLIST BY YEARS

You also get listed with each band member and the instrument they played. Songlist has 1993 all the songs under that year then the next drop down is 2000 with all the songs originated that year. Some detailed information lists albums or awards won by the bands or artist. I found some additional information that I didn't know before.

150 pages packed and stacked. I loved this author's work, his writing style. Some gramical errors but that had nothing to do with books excellent reading material. I look forward to order addition books by Christopher Lee Rhyne. I can't wait to read We Will Find Our Chiasm.

This book also holds some oldies later part of book. Two songs were Charlie's favorite. We sang one of those songs at his funeral back in 1999. I cried when I saw that song. Book includes past and present bands up to 2009. Excellent book, the best so far. I have read paperback and hardcover books on Bluegrass, those books didn't have information as this book had. I offer to anyone who wants striaghtforward song tiltes to read this book. $2.50 was too cheap, this book should sell for $9.99 standard price. Amazing read. I will always remember you Charlie and the tunes that came from your soul enlightened us all. Thank you Christopher Lee Rhyne for your viewpoint and clear concise literature inside Bluegrass Detour.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Very informative with hard to find information. I recommend this book to all bluegrass lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Music 101
I was facinated on authors ability to write about bluegrass artists. There is two poems the author wrote, even 45 lp record titles to search for. I stoped counting music titles after three hundred, I learned more about bluegrass after reading this book. Famous to not so famous artists locate five chapters inside book contents. You recieve excellent tips throughout book, I liked each page setup supporting band members, cd or cassette recordings. What you should add to your collection as a bluegrass collector. I purchased my first MP3 because I read this book. There are thousands of music titles to read about. I love this book, if you're a romantic on bluegrass music Bluegrass Detour highly recommended.

Excerpt: William Smith Monroe (September 13, 1911September 9, 1996) was an American musician who helped develop the style of music known as bluegrass, which takes its name from his band, the "Blue Grass Boys," named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky. Monroe's performing career spanned 60 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader. He is often referred to as The Father of Bluegrass. Monroe was born on his family's farm near Rosine, Kentucky, the youngest of eight children of James Buchanan "Buck" Monroe and Malissa Vandiver Monroe. Malissa and her brother, Pendleton "Pen" Vandiver, were both musically inclined, and Monroe and his siblings grew up playing and singing music in the home. Because his older brothers Birch and Charlie had already laid claim to the fiddle and guitar, respectively, young Bill was left with the smaller and less desirable mandolin during family picking sessions. Monroe later recalled that his brothers insisted that he remove four of the eight strings from the instrument so that he would not play too loudly. Monroe's mother died when he was ten years old, followed by his father six years later. Because his siblings had moved away from Rosine, Monroe lived for about two years with his uncle Pen Vandiver, often accompanying him when Vandiver played the fiddle at local dances. This experience later inspired one of Monroe's most famous compositions, "Uncle Pen," recorded in 1950; on a 1972 album, Bill Monroe's Uncle Pen, Monroe recorded a number of traditional fiddle tunes often performed by Vandiver. Uncle Pen Vandiver has been credited with giving Monroe "a repertoire of tunes that sank into Bill's aurally trained memory and a sense of rhythm that seeped into his bones." Another influence in Monroe's musical life ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=60588 ... Read more

Excerpt: Theodore Roosevelt "Double Duty" Radcliffe (July 7, 1902 August 11, 2005) was at his death thought to be the oldest living professional baseball player (it was later discovered that Silas Simmons was born seven years earlier in 1895), one of only a handful of major league (considering the Negro Leagues major) players who lived past their 100th birthdays, and a former star in the Negro Leagues. Playing for more than 30 teams, Radcliffe had more than 4,000 hits and 400 home runs, won about 500 games and had 4,000 strike-outs. He played as a pitcher and a catcher, became a manager, and in his old age became a popular ambassador for the game. Damon Runyon coined the nickname "Double Duty" because Radcliffe played as a catcher and as a pitcher in the successive games of a 1932 Negro League World Series doubleheader between the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Monroe Monarchs. In the first of the two games at Yankee Stadium Radcliffe caught the pitcher Satchel Paige for a shutout and then pitched a shutout in the second game. Runyon wrote that Radcliffe "was worth the price of two admissions." Radcliffe considered his year with the 1932 Pittsburgh Crawfords to be one of the highlights of his career. The Crawfords beat the Monarchs 51 in the best-of-nine series. Radcliffe pitched three and caught three of the six East-West All-Star Games in ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1404900 ... Read more

Excerpt: As Player As Manager Andrew "Rube" Foster (September 17, 1879 - December 9, 1930) was an American baseball player, manager, and pioneer executive in the Negro Leagues. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. Foster, cosidered by historians to have been perhaps the best African-American pitcher of the 1900s, also founded and managed the Chicago American Giants, one of the most successful black baseball teams of the pre-integration era. Most notably, he organized the Negro National League, the first long-lasting professional league for African-American ballplayers, which operated from 1920 to 1931. Foster adopted his longtime nickname, "Rube", as his official middle name later in life. Foster was born in Calvert, Texas on September 17, 1879. His father, also named Andrew, was a reverend and elder of the local American Methodist Episcopal Church. Foster started his professional career with the Waco Yellow Jackets, an independent black team, in 1897. Over the next few years he gradually built up a reputation among white and black fans alike, until he was signed by Frank Leland's Chicago Union Giants, a team in the top ranks of black baseball, in 1902. After a slump, he was released, and signed with a white semipro team based in Otsego, Michigan - Bardeen's Otsego Independents. According to Phil Dixon's American Baseball Chronicles: Great Teams, The 1905 Philadelphia Giants, Volume III "In completing the summer of 1902 with Otsegos multi-ethnic teamthe only multi-race team he would ever regularity performFoster is reported to have pitched twelve games. Excerpt: The Stanley Brothers were a legendary American bluegrass duo made up of brothers Carter and Ralph Stanley. Carter and Ralph Stanley hailed originally from Dickenson County, Virginia. The family soon moved to McClure, Virginia where their parents worked a small farm in the Clinch Mountains. Music was a part of their lives from early on, as they were able to listen to the likes of the Monroe Brothers, J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers and the Grand Ole Opry on local radio. The brothers soon formed a band, the Lazy Ramblers, and performed as a duo on WJHL radio in Johnson City, Tennessee. World War II interrupted any thoughts of a musical career, and it was not until both brothers returned from the service that they were able to make their own mark in music. They formed their band, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys, in 1946 as the first band to copy the Monroe sound. Carter played guitar and sang lead while Ralph played banjo and sang with a strong, high tenor voice. Additional members of this early band were Darrell "Pee Wee" Lambert on mandolin and Bobby Sumner on fiddle. Sumner was soon to be replaced by Leslie Keith. On December 26, 1946, the band began performing at radio station WCYB in Bristol, Tenness...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=333239 ... Read more

Excerpt: John Wesley Donaldson (February 20, 1891 April 12, 1970) was an American baseball pitcher in Pre-Negro league and Negro league baseball. He was born in Glasgow, Missouri. Researchers have documented much of his career. Box scores reveal 235 wins and 84 losses and a winning percentage of .737. He also notched 3,832 strikeouts, an ERA of 1.37 and 86 shutouts against all levels of competition. He completed 296 of 322 starts (92%), had 22 one-hitters, six no-hitters and a perfect game. He also had a 30 strikeout game, 26 games with more than 20 strikeouts and a total of 166 double digit strikeout games. Donaldson could also hit, batting .334 in over 1,800 at bats. Donaldson's early career was spent in our around his hometown of Glasgow, Missouri. He is known to have played for the Missouri Black Tigers of nearby Higbee, Missouri in 1908, and subsequently for the Hannaca Blues an all black contingent from Glasgow during the 1909-10 seasons. It seems that sometime during the 1910 campaign he was exposed to barnstorming clubs that traveled through the area and knew then what he wanted to do for a living. Pitched for Brown's Tennessee Rats, who were managed by W.A. Brown out of Holden, Missouri. The baseball team traveled with a compliment called Brown's Tennessee Minstrels. Together the group of about 20 individuals crisscrossed the upper Midwest playing ball during the day and providing an evening minstrel program much to the delight of their mostly white ticket buyers. Donaldson established himself as a remarkable pitcher posting a reported record of 44-3. From the supplier: Bertolli North America's market leadership in the olive oil business is largely due to its head marketer for over a decade, William Monroe. However, due to 1995's severe droughts in key growing areas such as Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Tunisia, the veteran marketer fought a bad year as he watched his company's volume diminish by 15%, even as prices were kept very low. As he set his sights on a slightly better 1996 for Bertolli and the industry as a whole, Monroe preaches that the best marketing thrust for a product such as theirs is to sell it as a delicious food ingredient.
