3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but more is out there.
Not a bad book, but look for more recent books on this subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good guide, but...
This book has been more or less replaced by other books written by Dr. Yang.

Comprehensive Analysis of Chin Na or Instructor's Manual for Chin Na would be better purchases. These are the books that Dr. Yang uses as a guide in his seminars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but don't buy it.
This book is decently written and has lots of good information; however, there is a lot that is left out. Also, the pictures could use arrows to demonstrate the moves better. The author has written two other more recentbooks on the subject which greatly improve on the first.Buy one of those.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those with basic knowledge of these moves.
Those best served by this book will be those whohave had some chin na/grappling experience. To learn these moves ONLY from the book could prove difficult, but not impossible. There is an excellent video companion to this book. ... Read more

Excerpt: Macanese (traditional Chinese: , "people of Macau") can be a general term for the residents or natives of Macau, a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China and a former Portuguese colony. More specifically, the Macanese (Portuguese: ; Chinese: , "native-born Portuguese people") are an ethnic group which originated in Macau since the 16th century, consisting mostly of people with some Portuguese ancestry. Historically, many ethnic Macanese spoke the Macanese language, a Portuguese-based creole, now virtually extinct. Many are fluent in both Portuguese and Cantonese. The Macanese have preserved a distinctive Macanese cuisine. Portuguese culture dominates the Macanese, but Chinese cultural patterns are also significant. The community acted as the interface between ruling colonial government - Portuguese from Portugal who knew little about Chinese - and the Chinese majority (95% of population) who knew equally little about the Portuguese. Most Macanese had paternal Portuguese heritage since - until 1974 - there were Portuguese men stationed in Macau as part of their military service. Many stayed in Macau after the expiration of their military service, marrying either Macanese or Chinese women who spoke Portuguese. Many Macanese migrated to Portuguese-speaking Brazil and Portuguese African provinces. Many emigrants to African provinces, and their descendants who g...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=245886 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seize and Control
Chin Na means "seize and control" and is part of most Chinese martial arts.
Many of the hidden techniques in the Taiji forms are actually Chin NA techniques.

There is a DVD companion to the book "Analysis of Shaolin Chin NA".
If you are reading the book, you should also get the DVD so that you can see demonstrations of each technique.
which are shown in 1)slow motion 2)close up and 3)normal speed. Each technique in the DVD references the book numberings.
The video demonstration is great when you are reading the book since the techniques need to be seen and experienced to be understood.

You probably should watch the DVD with a remote control in one hand and the book in the other hand.
The DVD demonstrates the techniques. The book describes why and how the techniques work. The book also describes escapes and counters which are not covered in the DVD.

The book is divided into:
1. Fundamental Training -- exercises to develop the hand strength and speed needed to effectively apply Chin Na techniques.
2. Finger Chin NA.
3. Wrist Chin NA.
4. Elbow Chin NA.
5. Shoulder, Neck and Waist Chin Na.
6. Neck Chin NA.
9. Muscle Grabbing Chin NA.
10. Cavity Press
11. Using Chin NA in a fight.
12. Treatment of Injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still an awesome book!
This was the first martial arts book I ever bought, I still learn from it. When you think you have a fair understanding of what is going on, and the book is mere basics, you find some true gold through practice and dedication, this is one of those must have books like that will be right there for you throughout your life as a martial artists. Here is wonderful instruction for beginners and advanced martial artists alike, I recommend a training partner to get the most you can out of this fine peace of work.

2-0 out of 5 stars sj
I believe that medium of a book form has certain limitations when it comes to explaining moving actions such as chin na techniques. I bought this book prior to buying the dvd of YMAA production on chin na. i would say that it is better to get a dvd than a book if one is more keen to understand the techniques than the related informations.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Analysis" is a great book...
The "Analysis of Shoalin Chin Na" is a great book. The author takes you throguh the beginning, starting with stretching and exercises to make the most of your chin na training. He goes through a complete chin na regime, beginning with the fingers, wrists, elbows and shoulder joints. The information taught in this volume, if studied intimately, can give the thoughtful martial artist enough insight and information to take what he learns about joints, to enable him to apply that knowledge in almost any situation. This is a fine instructional manual, written and explained in a very credible manner.I highly recommend it for any serious martial artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me in ALL of my training
I am a teacher of Yoshinkan Aikido with 30 years of training in various martial arts, including Taichi and now Chin Na.I have been familiar with Dr Yang's works but never owned any of his books until last year.I finally had an opportunity to attend one of his seminars and now study with some of his students.I am also trying to collect as much of his works as I can.

I found this book to be an excellent resource in my Chin Na studies and to help learn the techniques I am learning from the students of Chin Na and on the YMAA DVDs that I own.
But, as the title suggests, this is for ALL styles.

I am always looking at how martial arts are inter-related and share common techniques and principles.I also look for variations on techniques in my style and try to work them into my training and teaching.

This book is not only helping me to learn Chin Na but has brought more depth to my Aikido.

Product Description
Quite a few books have been published on the subject of Chin Na (Qin Na), the proven seizing techniques of Chinese martial arts. However, most books focus on the introduction of techniques themselves, and contain very little or no discussion on application in actual combat situations. This seizing art has thus been confined to stage performances instead of real combat use.

Although Dr. Yang has published other Chin Na books, both fundamental and advanced texts, he believes this work is necessary in order to make this art more complete and alive. Therefore, in addition to introducing many new techniques, this book is also laid out according to actual combat scenarios - for example, application of Chin Na when your opponent punches, grabs, kicks or attacks with a knife. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Text Book on Shaolin Chin Na
I am continually referencing back to my Dr. Ming Books, and DVD's, this one however is one of my favorites. Easy to read and understand, Good pictures, and I always seem to find something new. It truly is a must have for a martial arts library, or for anyone who is curious about joints, pressure points, health and healing, as well as self defense techniques revolving around the seizing of your enemy.I strongly recommend this book for the serious martial artist, including the one without a teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classical Reference for CHIN - NA Practitioners
Nicely detailed techniques and applications. This book helps to dive further into the system of CHIN-NA.Most of the moves and techniques look very simple and most are simple to perform but these movements are very sophisticated techniques once you understand the principles behind this form of martial art.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice reference
If you have decided to look up this book you should be smart enough to realize that this is a different sort of book than for example Complete Krav Maga: The Ultimate Guide to Over 200 Self-Defense and Combative Techniques, this book by Jwing-Ming is the traditional stuff.

If you are ambitious enough to use this book to learn from you need two things:
1. a background in a martial art where grappling is a significant component; Chinese wrestling/Shuai Jiao, Aikido, Jujutsu, Hapkido...
2. someone to practice with

How you use this material is up to you:
1. reference
2. practice selected techniques
3. teach yourself all techniques sequentially

Like all of Dr.Yang's books, this book is filled with pictures that are easy to follow. But if you get the DVDs that goes with it you will get a better sense of the movements: Chin Na In Depth - Courses 1 - 4 (YMAA grappling), Chin Na In Depth - Courses 5 - 8, Chin Na In Depth - Courses 9 - 12.

There are techniques in this book that would not be very practical in an actual modern self-defense situation.
But what is practical or not depends on the user, some techniques will work very well for you, others you will struggle with. For example, to me the use of finger-locking-techniques would be very hard to apply in a realistic scenario, I have trained in them but find them very hard to apply under realistic scenarios.

It is not my intent whatsoever to advise people to not train finger-locking techniques, I hope readers don't put too much value in my review since it is based only on my opinion and experiences.
Martial arts students should try things out for themselves first and foremost. That is one of the fantastic things about all martial arts, learning from them leads to learning about yourself. One of my teachers said to me long ago that learning a martial art is not about learning how to fight, but about learning about yourself, that it is training of the mind.
For me finger-locking techniques did not work very well, but that does not mean that it will not work well for others.

My main use of this book has been to train in techniques that work very well for me - mainly the ones against knife attacks and strikes. I also like to just sit down with the book and study the different techniques, going through them in my head.

I have a strong interest in the traditional aspects of martial arts, and this is an interesting and important book for those who share this interest, as it represents a culture and way of living.

In short, anyone who has a strong interest in traditional martial arts and has a grappling background will find great value in this book, it really is one of a kind.

Product Description
Chin Na is the art of seizing and controlling, and is an element of all Chinese martial arts including Taijiquan.

Today, most people practice Taijiquan to maintain health or cure sickness. For the last fifty years the martial aspects of Taijiquan have been ignored, and the art is now incomplete. Most practitioners no longer understand the martial applications of Taijiquan, or even that it is a martial art. For example, the concept and training methods of Taiji Jin (or Taiji martial power), and how to apply internal Qi in the martial arts have become an unfamiliar subject in Taiji societies today. As a result, actual martial applications of Jin and Qi, such as Chin Na or Cavity Strikes, are currently not popularly known or studied.

To preserve Taiji's martial aspect, this book presents 85 Taiji Chin Na (Qin Na), the art of controlling an opponent through joint locks and cavity strikes.

Taiji Chin Na is one of the four main martial training categories of Taijiquan (the other three categories are striking, kicking, and wrestling / downing the opponent). Of all these four, Chin Na is the most effective, practical, powerful, and easiest to learn. Once you have mastered Taiji Chin Na, you will be able to apply the theory and techniques to any other martial style you practice. If you are a Taiji beginner, Taiji Chin Na could offer you a key to enter the door of martial Taiji.

* Chin Na is effective, powerful and easy to learn.

* Includes Chin Na techniques from the Taiji forms and Taiji Pushing Hands.

* The theory and techniques can be applied to any Taiji style.

* This book contains detailed instructions and over 500 photos and drawings so you can teach yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Content
Another great book by Yang Jwing Ming. Anyone familiar with Yang Taijiquan and Chin Na or Jiu Jitsu will find the content pretty useful and innovative. The author outright admits to using White Crane Qin Na in a Taiji Quan context, and points out how others can be incorporated.

The Thirteen Postures, push-hands, and their Qin Na applications are depicted in great detail.

My only gripe with the book, (this seems to be a common pattern in most YMMA books) is the diagrams. Some of the techniques are hard to follow, and seem a bit far-fetched. It isn't always clear how he gets from point A to point B, which is where the text comes in. Then again, as I mentioned earlier, you really do need a good understanding of Chin-Na or Jiu Jitsu, to appreciate some of the presented techniques.

Unless you have at least some background knowlege of Taiji and Chin-Na/Jiu Jitsu, you may not get much out of this text. However, I must say, Yang Jwing Ming is by far one of my favorite authors, and is very knowledgeable on the topic.

I would recommend this book to intermediate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for tai chi and othermartial arts practitioners
Reference on Chin Na adaptation of tai chi.All eight postures and five foot works of tai chi (Thirteen postures) are explained with Chin Na (Joint holds, locks and takedowns). The book also explains general principles of tai chi Chin Na and its generaized differences with Shaolin Chin Na.It is a good book for any one interested in Martial Arts, Tai Chi or Chin Na in particular. The author is highly competent in Chinese Martial Arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Yang Does it Again
This is another great book by Dr. Yang. There is a lot of good information in it.I would like thank Dr. Yang for sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top quality chin na book
This is another excellent book from Dr. Yang. I have several of his other chin na books, including the big Chin Na Applications book with the pink cover, and this makes a great companion to that book also. Dozens of useful techniques are presented, covering the complete range of chin na applications from wrist, elbow and sholder locks to knee, neck, and head holds and locks.

Chin na is a fascinating art, and several kung fu styles, such as various tiger styles and eagle claw kung fu, are famous for their chin na. But all kung fu styles have some chin ha, as well as tai chi styles. Chen style tai chi is especially well known also for its chin na. At the Shaolin temples, students first learned the punching and kicking arts of kung fu, later progressing to chin na, which was practiced by only the more advanced monks.

That leads to my next comment, which is that compared to the percussion arts, or punching and kicking arts like TKD, karate, and kung fu, chin na is definitely a grappling art and is even more difficult to learn from a book. Dr. Yang's books usually have very good photo sequences, and this one is no different, but it's still hard to do it from a text. Therefore, this book is recommended more for somewhat who already has at least a basic background already in the techniques (or another form of locking or grappling) in order to get the most from it. You don't have to be a chin na student either, jujitsu, aikido, and even the Indonesian arts of pentjak silat (especially the Rikesan and Mande Muda silat styles) have many similar holds and locks.

If you're going to try to seriously learn from the book, I have a recommendation for you to aid your learning. Another thing you can do is use the book in conjunction with a good video on chin na. Several masters, including Kwong Wing Lam, have done this and I've seen them and they're excellent. Dr. Yang has a video where he demonstrates over 100 techniques in one video, making it an excellent tape for the price.

You can often find these tapes relatively inexpensively used on e Bay. Just do a search for "chin na." The chin na tapes aren't as common as some of the other martial arts videos you see, but if you monitor e Bay for them for a month or two you should be able to find some, which is how I got mine. You can usually get a good video for ten to twenty dollars plus a few dollars shipping. The combination of the book and the video is about the next best thing to having a real teacher, if you live in an area where none is available.

I am a chin na teacher myself, and my chin na derived from what is known as square wu style tai chi, although I have studied Yang style also. I teach the holds and locks which I integrate with the punching and kicking arts, which gives you both outfighting and infighting grappling arts for both ranges, and chin na is great for that. I find I prefer it to aikido in some ways since the circles and movements are smaller in chin na and designed to flow from the other hand and foot techniques.

As another writer here commented, you'll also need a training partner, which is essential with any grappling art. It's easier to train on your own doing kung fu or karate, but with chin na a partner is essential. Also, be sure to go slow and easy at first and avoid any powerful or jerky movements. Remember that chin na holds and locks apply maximum leverage and extension to the joints and serious injury can result if you go too far. Be sure you and your partner understand to let up immediately when someone taps out. Move into position slowly at first and then speed up as you get better, but always take care of your partner. In 20 years of doing chin na I've never hurt anyone seriously, but other people have hurt me occasionally who weren't as careful or skilled as I, so be careful. With each lock there's a point where you will feel resistance and you can't go any further without damaging the body. Learn to feel for that and to stop at that point. Still, a little bit of pain and soreness and getting your elbows and wrists especially "tweaked" a bit is normal in chin na. But it's important to observe normal safety precautions to avoid more serious injury. Remember, if you get hurt you won't be able to train. And if you hurt your partner, he won't be able to train with you.

Overall, another great book from Dr. Yang, who is much respected in the Chinese martial arts community for the breadth and depth of his knowledge in several Chinese arts, which includes Shaolin White Crane, Eagle Claw kung fu (which is a very rare style to find these days) and chin na.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taiji Chin Na
As a child in Glasgow I was taught some of the principles and practices shown within this art. After losing my master I crossed trained for a while on other arts before coming back to Chin Na. I have found this book very informative backed up with a video that accompanies. A must read for not only the serious practioner but for the casual reader too. ... Read more
