Product Description
Hayley Mills and June Harding star in this delightful comedy about two mischievous students who turn a convent school upside down with their pranks. Just when there appears to be no hope for the two incorrigible students, they get a little help from two of the Sisters. Also starring Rosalind Rusell, Binnie Barnes and Camilla Sparv. St. Francis used to be a quiet sedate convent school - quiet and sedate, that is, until it was invaded by its newest pupil, Mary Clancy. Mary is a hellion who's youthful spirits keep Mother Superior in a constant state of panic as she and her friend, Rachel Devery, substitute bubble bath for the nun's sugar, smoke cigars in the boiler room, and attempt to make a life-mask of the face of a fellow student with quick-hardening plaster. Through it all, Mother Superior is determined to salvage something of worth from the youthful clay. Actress-writer-director Ida Lupino got one of her unfortunately rare opportunities behind a camera making this 1966 family comedy about two mischievous students (Hayley Mills, June Harding) making life difficult for the nuns at a girls' convent school. Rosalind Russell has a fine part as a mother superior vexed by their pranks and outwardly chilly until the girls catch her in a more private moment of emotional release. The script has an anecdotal structure--it's sort of one thing after another with Mills's and Harding's troublemakers--but there is a rising sense that these two kids gradually develop some awareness of the pain and sacrifices of others. A fun and touching movie all around, with a nice twist at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great old movie
I watched this with my kids the other day and we could not wait to see each new scheme cooked up by the two teen main characters. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this film. Hayley Mills does a great job. Really good family entertainment. I did not have to hide little ones eyes or ears on this film. The small surprise at the ending was pretty good too. ... Read more

Product Description
2 cassettes, 2 hours, Whistle Down the Wind is Mary Hayley Bell's delightful story about a group of children who find a tired and sick man in one of the barns and become convinced that he is Jesus. It is then their task to care for him and protect him from adults who, they are certain, would make the same mistake adults made almost 2,000 years ago by not believing it was really Jesus. The story is read by Bell's daughter, the internationally known actress Hayley Mills. Hayley, in fact, starred with Alan Bates in the film version of Whistle Down the Wind ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this story.I did really.
One day, a strange man enters a barn in which some children are playing. When they ask him who he is, he replies "Jesus!" and passes out. Is he Jesus?

I first found an old copy of this book in the stacks of a New Zealand library. I loved it and had to own it. Unlike the musical version, the focus here is on Brat, and her relationship with the Man and with her world. The characters are so well-written and I feel that Swallow's acceptance of the Man as Jesus is more believable here than in the musical, because of her age (she's 12). Brat herself is hilarious, with a penchant for having Alka-Seltzer as a meal, and little Poor Baby rolls cigarettes and tries to fend off a 5-year-old admirer. All the while, the kids take care of the Man who might be Jesus, keeping him a secret from the adults. And then corny ol'Amos gets nosy...

The book is much better, I think, than the musical. Aside from the Man, the main characters are all self-reliant, impish children-- just the kind I've always liked to read about.

Oh, and my review title?Just ask Brat about that.

But good luck finding a copy. When the musical opened, there was renewed interest in the book, but as of this writing it's gone out of print again. Most available copies are upwards of $100. Yow! If Amazon.com has no copies available, try rare book dealers in the UK.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK FOR HAYLEY MILLS FANS
As far as I know this is the only book that Hayley has helped to compile. She thought it would be very interesting to ask many people from various cultures their views on God and the Life Hereafter. There has probably never been a better time to understand each other's religious beliefs. ... Read more

Excerpt: Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 June 22, 1969) was an American actress and singer. Through a career that spanned 45 of her 47 years, Garland attained international stardom as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on the concert stage. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award, won a Golden Globe Award, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her work in films, as well as Grammy Awards and a Special Tony Award. She had a contralto singing range. After appearing in vaudeville with her sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney and the 1939 film with which she would be most identified, The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, Garland was released from the studio but gained renewed success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert, a well-regarded but short-lived television series and a return to acting beginning with a critically acclaimed performance in A Star Is Born (1954). Despite her professional triumphs, Garland battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and manipulated her on-screen physical appearance. Plied with drugs to control her weight and increase her productivity, Garland endured a decades-long struggle with prescription drug addiction. Garland was plagued by financial instability, often owi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=58719 ... Read more
