Mr. George, who thought it was not best to give to beggars in the streets, was going on without regarding him ; but theThb Beooab.man hobbled on by the side of the strangers, and Rcemed about to be as pertinacious as the commissioner. They went on so for a little distance, when at length, just as the man was about givingSly charity. The beggar gone.up in despair, Rollo put his hand in his pocket, and feeling among the money there, happened to bring up a small copper coin, which he at once and instinctively dropped into the beggar's cap. He performed the movement a little slyly, so that Mr. George did not see him. This he was able to do from the fact that the beggar was on his fide, and not on Mr. George's, and, moreover, a little behind. As soon as the man received the coin, he took it, put the cap on his head, and fell back out of view." I am glad he is gone," said Mr. George ; " I was afraid he would follow us half through the town."Rollo laughed."What is it?" said Mr. George. "What makes you laugh ? "" Why, the fact is," said Rollo, " I gave him u batz."" Ah ! " said Mr. George." Yes," said Rollo, " or something like a batz, that I had in my pocket."A batz is a small Swiss coin, of the value of a fifth of a cent. Rollo had become familiar with this money in the course of his travels in Switzerland, but he did not yet know the names of the Prussian coins. The money which he gaveRollo's way. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I will be up front.I did not go out looking for this.It was recommended by a friend.

The book is a little slow getting into, so hang in there.I usually give a book about 80 pages. If it is not good by 80 pages it probably will never get good. This book passes the page test though.

This book surprised me by the author's ability to write a ficticious story about nonfictitious characters. For the time that it was written it is superb.I recommend it to those who are looking for a good read. ... Read more

Her dispositionChapter III. Lady Jane Grey. AMONG Elizabeth's companions and play, mates in her early years was a young lady, her cousin, as she was often called, though she was really the daughter of her cousin, named Jane Grey, commonly called in history Lady Jane Grey. Her mother was the Marchioness of Dorset, and was the daughter of one of King Henry the Eighth's sisters. King Henry had named her as the next in the order of succession after his own children, that is, after Edward his son, and Mary and Elizabeth his two daughters; and, consequently, though she was very young, yet, as she might one day be Queen of England, she was a personage of considerable importance. She was, accordingly, kept near the court, and ibared, in some respects, the education and the studies of the two princesses.Lady Jane, was about four years youngei than the Princess Elizabeth, and the sweetness of her disposition, united with an extraordinary IntelJftctnal superiority, which showed itself alLady Jane'i parenta. Restraintl put npon hera very early period, made her a universal favorite. Her father and mother, the Marquis and Marchioness of Dorset, lived at an estate they possessed, called Broadgate, in Leicestershire, which is in the central part of England, although they took their title from the county of Dorset, which is on the southwestern coast. They were very proud of their daughter, and attached infinite importance to her descent from Henry VTL, and to the possibility that she might one day succeed to the English throne. They were very strict and severe in their manners, and paid great attention to etiquette and punctilio, as persons who are ambitious of rising in the world are very apt to do. In all ages of the world, and among all nations, those who have... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to wrtie this person?
This book appears to me less interesting than the books I read by the same author.

Perhaps the problem is not attributed to the author, but how to write a book related to a person, who was not like other kings involved persoanlly in fierce battles but sat in London.

Thus there are certain difficulties to write such a person, who appears pale although her Kingdom graw fast and her life was extremely important. ... Read more

The Embarkation. The time fixed for the sailing of the steamer was on Tuesday morning ; and Mr. George, in order to have time to communicate with some of the gentlemen to whose care he intended to intrust the two children, planned his journey to New York so as to arrive there in good season on Monday. He supposed that he should be able, without any difficulty, to find one or the other of them in the afternoon or evening of that day." And if worst comes to the worst," added he to himself, in his reflections on the subject, " I can certainly find them at the ship, by going on board an hour or two before she sails, and .watching the plank as the passengers come up from the pier."Worst did come to the worst, it seems; for when Mr. George came home at nine o'clock in the evening, on Monday, and Rollo came up to him very eagerly in the parlor of the boardingJane and Lottie on the stairs.house, to ask him whom he had found to take charge of them, he was forced to confess that he had not found any one." I am glad of it 1" exclaimed Rollo, joyfully. " I am glad of it! I like it a great deal better to take care of ourselves."He then began dancing about the room, and finally ran off in great glee, to inform Jane of the prospect before them. Rollo was very ambitious of being considered a man.He found Jane sitting on the stairs with another child of her own age, that she had become acquainted with at the boarding house; for it was at a boarding house, and not at a hotel, that Mr. George had taken lodgings for his party. This child's name was Lottie; that is, she was commonly called Lottie, though her real name was Charlotte. She was a beautiful child, with beaming black eyes, a radiant face, and dark ... ...
