2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
The concept was great, however, the photographs of the homes were difficult to read. The images provided did not give the viewer a clear understanding of the home's layout. In addition, the photos are matte not glossy, on slightly textured paper, which greatly reduces fine details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but ... hmm...
The book is good as far as it goes.I was hoping for more floor plans, to give me an idea of how the homes relate to the topography, and more interior pictures for practical demonstrations of the use of space and light for living.

I feel as though I received a sampler, not a full book.

This is serious book and at the same time accessible to all. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the past 30 years, social archaeology has become one of the central fields of archaeological research, placing human societies at the heart of our understanding of the human past. Colin Renfrew has been a key champion of social archaeology, and the present volume brings together a series of papers on the occasion of his retirement. They have been written by colleagues and former students, and touch upon many of the themes that he himself has studied and about which he has written so persuasively and engagingly: the development of the human mind, trade and exchange, social change, chiefdoms and states, and the archaeology of island societies. These studies focus not on earlier work, however, but reveal the new directions that have developed in recent years, bringing the study of social archaeology firmly into the twenty-first century. ... Product Description
Tracking knowledge down to ground concerned with trail-based archaeology, journeys and histories; this is a volume of both firsts and thick context. At face-value it documents almost a decade of groundbreaking investigations within the Annapurna highlands of Nepal. Including survey recording of fort and settlement sites, from the outset the project's focus was the extraordinary ruins of Kohla Sombre - Kohla, The Three Villages - the ancestral settlement of the Tami-mai (Gurung) community, who hosted and instigated the fieldwork programme. Ultimately, only a single season's excavation was conducted before the project was cut short by the political insurgency within the country. It concluded with holding a great shamans' meeting in Pokhara in 2002, at which their historical oral texts were presented. Narrating the long migration of the Tamu-mai into the region and down from a distant north, the present volume includes the full translation of one of these oral epics, the Lemako Roh Pye. The project represents a unique collaboration between archaeologists, anthropologists and a shaman. Including interviews with upland inhabitants, the volume encompasses the diverse voices of both its immediate participants and the local community. Fulsome in its presentation of the archaeological data and rich in ethnographic source-material, not only is this book crucial for Himalayan culture studies generally, but also relevant for any concerned with the construction and context of the past in the present, and the active forging of ethno-historical identities. ... Product Description

This isn't a tutorial on how to code PL/SQL. It's designed to show you how to code PL/SQL well. It shows you how to write code that will run quickly and won't break in high-load, multiuser environments. It covers the vast array of the functionality that PL/SQL provides, including effective handling of relational and abstract data, security, triggers, dynamic web content presentation from within the database, creation of a DBA toolkit, and effective debugging techniques.

This book sets out to redress the unjust criticism leveled at PL/SQL in years gone by. It gives you the tools and techniques to ensure that, whatever your needs are, the PL/SQL you build will run as efficiently as possible. The practical solutions provided in this book will help you to realize the true power and functionality PL/SQL can offer your projects.

Mastering Oracle PL/SQL: Practical Solutions is targeted primarily toward the DBA or developer charged with the implementation of effective data handling, security, and database administration mechanisms in the Oracle database. However, it will also have great appeal to any developer whose applications rely on an Oracle database and who needs a sound understanding of how to use PL/SQL effectively.

If you're brand-new to PL/SQL, then you'll want to take some time to get familiar with the language before tackling this book. It's not for the total beginner. But once you're up and running, you'll find this book an invaluable guide for ensuring that the PL/SQL solutions you build are robust, perform well, and are easy to maintain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is great book, It has a lots of example and explained really well. Great Work!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real good book to master PL/SQL
The book is good but many solutions are not tested fully so its not that they can be cut and pasted directly out of the book. you may have to troubleshoot many of them. Otherwise a real good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One for the must have collection !
As a Developer working predominantly with Oracle Databases for over five years, I'm always looking for books to help me produce better code.I have to say this is one of them. The author has produced a book that explains concepts in a practical manner that is also easy to read.I began reading this book just before starting a major development project and the code insights and examples assisted me greatly in this project.

Probably more a information and guidence book rather than a reference book.I found I read it from cover to cover and used the information as a platform for future developing. Some great code examples which I have used to great effect though!

5-0 out of 5 stars By far, one of the best book on practical Pl/sql
With 15 years experience in Oracle as DBA and developer, Iwrote a lot of packages and found in this book true advices and practical solutions, wich sound good to me. The best feature is that you can experiment all the code found in it and see by yourself the advantage of using the way proposed by McDonald. I like these books where autors breaks some common ideas ans show by "A + B" that the right solution is not the most common. A real useful book written by a true professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, worth its price
The book takes a bottom-up approach: the first part shows useful coding and optimizing techniques, while the second one gives real world applications and tips on program design.

I have two minor complaints, however:

Most chapters assume at least a good knowledge of PL/SQL and build on that, which I think is fair for a book titled "Mastering ...".On the other hand, two of the chapters (Triggers especially, and PL/SQL Debugging to a degree) take a different approach and start from the beginning, explaining the basics, too.It may be just me, but I think those pages are wasted.

Furthermore, there is a certain amount of overlap with Tom Kyte's Expert One-on-One Oracle, also from Apress. ... Read more

Product Description

Canadian progressive rock band Rush was the voice of the suburban middle class. In this book, Chris McDonald assesses the band's impact on popular music and its legacy for legions of fans. McDonald explores the ways in which Rush's critique of suburban life -- and its strategies for escape -- reflected middle-class aspirations and anxieties, while its performances manifested the dialectic in prog rock between discipline and austerity, and the desire for spectacle and excess. The band's reception reflected the internal struggles of the middle class over cultural status. Critics cavalierly dismissed, or apologetically praised, Rush's music for its middlebrow leanings. McDonald's wide-ranging musical and cultural analysis sheds light on one of the most successful and enduring rock bands of the 1970s and 1980s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought I knew Rush music
I've been a Rush fan for 30 years and thought I got it, but after resding this book I really know why I relate to this band. I also understand, now, why many people cringe when hearing old Rush songs. This book opened my eyes as to why people like the type of music they like. The author has great insight on these guy's and their music and how they grew as a band and developed their music.
The interviews and excerpts from interviews, were interesting since I always found it hard to get personal information on these guys in their earlier years.
It's difficult to have someone indulge in a subject they've predetermined not to like, but this book is interesting to anyone who would like to explore why music effects us the way it does and how our backgrounds and philosophy draw us to the type of intrests we have.
I'm going to see Rush again the next time they're in town and see some of the songs in a whole new light. Great book. Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars iNTELLECTUAL GIBERISH
This book is not about the rock band RUSH. It is some college professor's thesis trying to intellectually analyze the meaning of almost every rush song. I sent it back after reading 3 pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars B-O-R-I-N-G
I could never imagine a book about Rush being boring. Well I was wrong. I forced myself to read the whole thing (after chapter one it became a struggle of will to read on) to see if it drew any major conclusions. It did not. This is the work of an academic trying to impress other academics, not an author who is chronicling important facts about a subject they are passionate about. It is definitely not for Rush fans, there is nothing in this book that would possibly resonate with any Rush fan I know of. You will be sick of the word "middle" well before you reach the middle of the book. I can't believe someone would waste 206 pages trying to prove the theory that Rush's primary appeal was to middle-class men.

No, duh! Why don't you spend 206 pages relating all the evidence that the sun is bright or that oranges are orange?
It would serve about the same obvious purpose.

The notion that songs like "Freewill"are written with a "detached quality" and that the "subject speaking through the lyrics takes on the position of a neutral, objective, invisible observer" is laughable and ludicrous! The lyrics of "Freewill" are clearly written from a subject who strongly advocates Freewill.

This author presents himself as a highbrow writer justifying his appreciation for middlebrow values. In reality, I think it is a middlebrow writer deperately trying to appear as highbrow, and failing miserably.

5-0 out of 5 stars A published dissertation
This book reads like a thesis because it IS a thesis - Chris McDonald conducted the research for this book as part of his PhD. Thus said, it is an academic tome. Being that I am both an academic AND a hardcore Rush fan, this thoughtful and serious work on Rush and the middle class delights me no end. It may be difficult for the lay reader. Even if you are not a Rush fan, but interested in the study of class, McDonald makes an important scholarly contribution to the literature on the middle class, a oft neglected subject of study in sociology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for every RUSH fan
This book reads like a thesis.I got through the first couple chapters and had enough.I thought it would be interesting reading about the history of the band, but it wasn't.Some of the "facts" claimed are not true.Very dry and boring, unless you are a music major. ... Read more

Product Description
This accurate and exciting pictorial history will acquaint the reader with the seacoast defense of New Bedford. Fortified since the 1700s, seacoast defenses provided important protection for the New Bedford area. By the time of the Civil War, a strong granite fortress was under construction to guard the seaward approaches to the harbor of New Bedford and, later, powerful long-range guns were installed to protect the seaport. In The Military History of New Bedford, great care has been taken to identify more than two hundred vintage photographs of the harbor defense systems at all the points of Buzzards Bay, coastal fortifications, and the observation and radar towers from the Cape Cod Canal to Westport. The book identifies and explains the long-abandoned granite and concrete monoliths of New Bedford. It touches upon Gen. Robert E. Lee's role in the construction of the granite fort at Clarkís Point (Fort Taber) and describes the impact that Henry Martyn Robert had in the area by writing Pocket Manual of Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies, later known as Robert's Rules of Order. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Calling all golfers...
Calling all golfers who will enjoy reading about the Ryder Cup! The author has written a humorous novel. Readers will recognize some of the PGA personalities in the book by traits that real PGA golfers on the tour possess. The novel includes golf tips as well as inside information about professional golf versus amateur golf.

This book could be made into a movie, but the people who should play the characters are deceased. In a movie of The Green, Jackie Gleason should play Eddie and Paul Newman could be Alan! The hustle of golf in this book can be compared to the game of pool!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Movie Waiting to Happen
THE GREEN puts you on the fairway and never lets you off! Eddie Caminetti ranks up there with the all-time great con characters and brings to mind Mark Whalberg who I'd love to see play the role. Think of this as THE COLOR OF MONEY on a golf course!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great golf novel
It is hard to find great novels about golf. This is really one that captures the magic of the game with the skill of a good storyteller.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars beware--liberal use of the 'F" word
This book has received a lot of favorable reviews here.It may well be a good read.Prospective readers should be aware, though, that McAllister makes liberal use of the "F" word.In my opinion he makes way too much use of that word.I read for pleasure and relaxation. If I wanted to hear profanity, I'd hang out at the local bar.If profanity bothers you the way it does me, stay away from "The Green."

4-0 out of 5 stars Flashes of brilliance; periods of disappointment.
This novel, detailing the highly unorthodox strategy of recruiting a golf hustler to participate in the Ryder Cup, was at times brilliant, every bit the equal of some of Dan Jenkins' best work.At times, however, there were glaring mistakes in the description of some of the Ryder Cup matches and the shot selection of many of the players.

For example, in one set of matches, it was stated that one group was playing number twelve, while the two previous matches had ended in ties. Not likely the third group would have fallen six holes behind the group in front of it.The author also messed up the shot sequence in one of the alternating shot matches. He has virtually every player hitting shots that land in front of the green and run up, a strategy not called for at PGA West and rarely seen anywhere other than British Links courses.

These instances, while relatively minor, were frequent enough to detract from the flow of the novel and prevented me from awarding a fifth star. The author is supposedly a golfer, but you'd have to wonder, given many of the mistakes that should have been caught by the most casual golf fan.A well written, highly amusing novel, that could have been much better with just a little editing by a knowledgable golfer.
