Product Description

Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!

Marcia Brady, eldest daughter on television's The Brady Bunch, had it all—style, looks, boys, brains, and talent. No wonder her younger sister Jan was jealous! For countless adolescents across America who came of age in the early 1970s, Marcia was the ideal American teenager. Girls wanted to be her. Boys wanted to date her. But what viewers didn't know about the always-sunny, perfect Marcia was that offscreen, her real-life counterpart, Maureen McCormick, the young actress who portrayed her, was living a very different—and not-so-wonderful—life. Now, for the very first time, Maureen tells the shocking and inspirational true story of the beloved teen generations have invited into their living rooms—and the woman she became.

In Here's the Story, Maureen takes us behind the scenes of America's favorite television family, the Bradys. With poignancy and candor, she reveals the lifelong friendships, the hurtful jealousies, the offscreen romance, the loving support her television family provided during a life-or-death moment, and the inconsolable loss of a man who had been a second father. But The Brady Bunch was only the beginning. Haunted by the perfection of her television alter ego, Maureen landed on the dark side, caught up in a fast-paced, drug-fueled, star-studded Hollywood existence that ultimately led to the biggest battle of her life.

Moving from drug dens on Wonderland Avenue to wild parties at the Playboy mansion and exotic escapades on the beaches of Hawaii, this candid, hard-hitting memoir exposes a side of a beloved pop-culture icon the paparazzi missed. Yet it is also a story of remarkable success. After kicking her drug habit, Maureen battled depression, reconnected with her mother, whom she nursed through the end of her life, and then found herself in a pitched battle for her family in which she ultimately triumphed.

There is no question: Maureen McCormick is a survivor. After fifty years, she has finally learned what it means to love the person you are, insight that has brought her peace in a happy marriage and as a mother. Here's the Story is the empowering, engaging, shocking, and emotional tale of Maureen McCormick's courageous struggle over adversity and her lifelong battle to come to terms with the idea of perfection—and herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Well Written, Hopeful
I didn't want to get this book. I figured I had heard enough from the tabloids and the tidbits online about "Here's the Story." However, when I was purchasing Melissa Anderson's and Allison Arngrim's memoirs of Little House, Amazon suggested this, and on a whim, I said "Oh, all right..."

Yes, like most other kids in the USA, I grew up watching The Brady Bunch on TV (syndication; I was way too young when it was actually on TV). I read Barry Williams' Growing Up Brady, which was fun.Maybe this would be as fun.

I was surprised to find myself drawn into Maureen's story - she wrote it from her heart and with sincerity.I liked that it wasn't riddled with bad language like Melissa Gilbert's "Prairie Tale" was even though I think her lifestyle was much more troubled than Melissa Gilbert's. Maureen didn't write like a whiny victim like Melissa Gilbert did.Maureen made me feel for her, made me wish I had been there to be her friend, and encouraged me in the end when she finally got out of the hole she had been in for so many years.

A few criticisms: Naturally, I wanted more Brady Bunch stories. I would have liked to hear more about her relationships with Florence Henderson, Robert Reed, etc. I would have liked more on-set stories like Barry Williams shared in his memoir.I also would have liked to learn more about her spiritual life. According to the book, it seems like it was just another substitute for drugs - there is very little about her relationship with God beyond the brief chapter or two - did she drift away again? Was it a genuine conversion or a bridge to sobriety that she no longer needs? Wondering...

At any rate, it was an interesting read and I'm not sorry I purchased it.Will I read it again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Yeah...I would. And I agree with one of the earlier reviews stating Maureen should become an author. She could probably do very well writing stories. She did an excellent job sharing her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
I enjoyed reading this book. It did have enjoyable facts about The Brady Bunch, but I really enjoyed learning about what happened to Maureen before & after The Brady Bunch.

4-0 out of 5 stars FLAT OUT - A GOOD READ!
In the last 45 days I've read 4 autobiographies about famous women. Two were political, and two were about Hollywood "stars" in their mid-40's-to-early-50's.

This review will compare McCormack's book to Melissa Gilbert's "Prairie Tale", because, through their profession, gender, and age, they have much in common.

I was in my 20's & 30's when their respective TV shows vaulted them to fame, and as such, they were much too young to be of any romantic interest to me. But I did know of them, and when as adults they wanted to tell their story, I was open to hearing (reading) it.

Both books are graphic and straight-shooting, but Gilbert's book, which I read first, left me feeling, "Boy, what a self-indulgent life she led!" Although McCormack's life followed a path very similar to Gilbert's, I empathized more with McCormack. Her's is the better book with the more sympathetic story. I even came away liking McCormack more and rooting for her continuing happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy ending? Please?
Well, I will express the same surprise about Ms Mccormick that I expressed about another child actress's life story: 1) she survived, 2) she never had a run-in with the law, and 3) she was never the victim of a violent crime. I literally could not put this book down. I stayed up into the wee hours with this one.

There are some behind-the-scenes anecdotes from The Brady Bunch, but that was only 5 short years of her adolescence. The rest of this poor woman's entire life has been one excruciating ordeal after another. It's hard to look at the photos of her on IMDB.com smiling and looking happy when at any given point she was experiencing such misery. Her early childhood itself is a bizarre tale, unlike any I've read before. My heart goes out to her poor mother. She says that her mother is the strongest person she's ever known, and for very good reason. After The Brady Bunch, she goes through years -- a decade or more -- of drug abuse, but even when she gets clean (primarily through her faith in God, people who love her and own sheer will-power rather than expensive rehab) she gets no relief. She becomes a born-again Christian, marries a fabulous (and sexy) man who absolutely adores her, has a beautiful daughter, and still suffers mentally. Once she seems to get some relief from her mental ordeal, her family falls completely apart in the most appalling way, and it seems that, as the book went to press, there was yet no resolution in that situation. I came away from this feeling as if I should add her to my permanent prayer list that God will someday grant her a little peace. It is just relentless and a must-read, even if you never were a Brady fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
Unbelievbly truthful. Who would have ever believed the "kid" everyone at that time wanted to be was going through such personal hell. Maureen doesn't hold back on anything. It's shocking. humanizing, sad, and I APPLAUD her for it. I could barely put the book down from the moment it arrived. You won't be sorry if you loved the "Brady Bunch" as a kid...and you always wanted to be Marcia, so did Maureen. Buy the book its great! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did you like Marcia Brady? You will LOVE Maureen McCormick!
We all like the "Brady Bunch". We all like "Marcia". Maureen McCormick is so much MORE than just "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!"

She has lived a real life and faced struggles, addictions, and obstacles that would defeat "Wonder Woman" and Maureen fought on, survived, and regain her life and her family despite terrible losses and tragedy. I admire her!

Maureen writes beautifully and honestly and you can not put this book down until you finish! I hope there is a sequel in maybe another 10 years or so, and I wish Maureen and her family well. I also thank her for all the joy she has given to the world as a "Brady", without which, Maureen, we might never have know of you!

From the author: Interviews with 25 nurses in this grounded theory study show that when nurses recognized that a child's death was inevitable, they struggled with both grief distress and moral distress. Their distress occurred within the context of the nurse-patient relationship. Nurses employed a range of strategies to manage their distress. Several conditions facilitated or constrained nurses' strategies, and resulted in far-reaching implications both professionally and personally.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent read
Potentially disturbing subject matter, but a decent read. What I find most interesting is that the author was able to illustrate antisocial personality disorder so well before the term was even coined. I enjoyed this book because it didn't make me have to think too much and I wanted a "light" read in between the classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A genuine classic, better with age
Most people who are familiar with "The Bad Seed" probably recall the Warner Bros. film, with Nancy Kelly and Patty McCormack. But William March's original novel is worth discussing and revisiting. In its elegantly clipped language, its understated sense of morbid horror and its exploration of the complex themes of guilt and punishment, it's a very American classic. Though in the fifty-odd years since its publication, killer children have become sadly commonplace, the book's contrast between the "innocence" of the Eisenhower era and corruption lurking beneath the surface are still compelling. The book is actually more about the devil child's mother, Christine--a simple, honest, and well-meaning woman who finds herself completely undone when she discovers the homocidal tendencies in her eight-year old daughter. Events and images that bordered on camp in the film are so cleverly rendered here that the chills remain, and Christine's journey from confusion to tension to fear to breakdown is startlingly presented by a writer who understood guilt extraordinarily well. For those who loved the film, the book should be required reading. For those who feel bludgeoned by the excesses of modern horror, this is a stylish and worthwhile alternative that still delivers its share of shudders and scares. Beautifully done. ... Read more
