Product Description
When the most successful pop group in the world disbanded in 1970, its four members went in radically different directions, and none was more successful than Paul McCartney. Free at last to take control of his own songwriting, McCartney used his new group, Wings, to produce popular, classy music, most notably the Band on the Run album. Since those early days of freedom, McCartney has established himself as one of the most creative artists of his generation. With projects ranging from the soundtrack to the movie Give My Regards to Broad Street to the more recent, critically acclaimed show Liverpool Oratorio, he has also proved that his talents transcend what John Lennon once sardonically called "granny music." Celebrating McCartney's four decades of unparalleled success, this book is a multifaceted account of a world-class talent. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Paul McCartney by Alan Clayson
Is there any possibility of giving this book zero stars? What a
tedious and most forgettable read!I completely agree with the previous
customer comment; this book has more to do with the business peripheral
to Paul, not Paul. But in addition to that, Alan Clayson's writing style is
absolutely torturous.

The entire book is composed of weak, endless, one-sentence paragraphs
that meander across perhaps five subjects, adding clause upon wandering
clause, dropping name over unknown name.By the end, you have no clue
what in the world you have just read.I had to read and re-read it
until I could decipher the text's meaning.Alan, do yourself a favor
and brush-up on your basic writing skills.

I learned more about Paul in one 45 minute interview with Larry King
than from this effort by Clayson. This book, unfortunately, is a
complete waste of time, and makes Solzhenitsyn's "Gulag Archipelago"
feel like a light and happy read.

2-0 out of 5 stars A contractual obligation
The author explains at the start of the book that he was obliged to write it as part of a contractual agreement to deliver seperat books on each of the fab four. He clearly has no empathy with McCartney and treats him as a run of the mill songwriter and performer with a knack for commerical success. The problem is that this renders any subsequent analysis half hearted and also leads him to write far more about McCartney collaboraters such as Denny Laine than of McCartney himself. So we never get under the skin of the artist nor come any closer to understanding the creative tension and impact of his music. I can only reccommend for the completist who wants to get a reference to secondary Macca sources. ... Read more

This indispensable guide offers full transcriptions (including tablature and chord names) of ten of Paul McCartney’s most revered bass parts: "You Won’t See Me," "Drive My Car," "The Word," and "In My Life" from Rubber Soul; the classic b-side, "Rain," as well as "Taxman" and "I’m Only Sleeping" from Revolver; "Lovely Rita" from Sgt. Pepper; "Dear Prudence" from The White Album; and "Something" from Abbey Road. Each of these key tracks is analyzed and explained in detail to show today’s bassists how much they can still learn from McCartney’s remarkable skill and imagination. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much better....
I felt this book was average at best. Could have used a lot more bass riffs of his more famous songs and although excellent as an introduction it lacked the detail I expected. This guy, without a doubt, is the number one bass player in the world; even surpassing Jamerson of Motown fame as far as I'm concerned. Mr. McCartney is an original and he's the most lyrical and melodic of all bass players.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best bass player ever!
The book is interesting and gives a lot of details for those that know music well.Nevertheless, I felt I wanted more------------yes I craved more details and more songs analysis. One could say that if the book leaves you wanting more information then the book had to be a success.

The transcriptions are amazing and it was a shame they were not allowed to publish the bass line of "Something" by George Harrison.Maybe George left instructions not do so before his death--------------he seemed to dislike Paul till the very end.

The book affirms what we all know regarding Paul's approach and technique.Paul did not overplay if the song required a basic root and fifth. However, if there was space and if the song needed something else Paul could do wonders with the bass. The writers point out that Paul wrote more complex bass lines for the songs that John wrote. On the other hand Paul concentrated more in the overall arrangement when he played bass on one of his tunes.

I wish they had covered post Beatle bass lines. For example Paul plays a beautiful haunting bass in a song called "Teddy Bear" from his 1st solo album.

Great book for Beatle fans that play music. Not so sure it will please folks that do not play a musical instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul McCartney Always Deliver & This Book Does Too
This is a great book.It wont give you every McCartney bassline, but its a great read.If you want to know more about the "Guvnor," well this is a great place to start. If you're looking for a book full of tabs/scores, then check out other books. However, if what you want is a historical overview from a musicians point of view, then this will work out nicely.I rate these type books by whether I walked away learning something from the subject and this book delivers in a big way.I read this along with Beatles Gear and its a great top level analysis of the man behind some of the most beautiful basslines in pop music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Stuff Out There
Great book if you are looking for info on one of the most influencial bass players of the last century. However, if you interested in learning his basslines, you would be better off with with "The Beatles 67-70 Bass Recorded Versions", and "The Beatles 62-66 Bass Recorded Versions".

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Musicianship
This is a fascinating book, because it's more musucally aware than 99% of the hundreds of books on music I've read. It's not just anecdotes and instruments, but some very detailed discussion of what choices were made, what technical elements went into the effect, and how the bassline shapes the song. It's not just helpful transcription, but intelligent analysis.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. ... Product Description
In Power and Progress, Paul T. McCartney presents aprovocative case study of the Spanish-American War, exposing newfound dimensions to the relationship between American nationalism and U.S. foreign policy.

Two significant but distinct foreign-policy issues are at the center of McCartney's analysis: the declaration of war against Spain in 1898 and the annexation of the Philippine Islands as part of the war's peace treaty. According to McCartney, Americans were very explicitly and self-consciously expanding their nation's sense of mission in making these two foreign-policy decisions. They drew upon a cultural identity forged from racist, religious, and liberal-democratic characteristics to guide the United States into the uncharted waters of international prominence. What America did abroad they emphatically framed in terms of what they believed America to be. Foreign policy, McCartney argues, provided a concrete focus for this sense of mission on the world stage and played a marked role in shaping the contours and substance of American nationalism itself.

Power and Progress provides the first intensive look at how the idea of American mission has influenced the conduct of U.S. foreign policy, lending fresh insight into a transformative moment in the development of both U.S. foreign policy and national identity. It contributes measurably to our understanding of the cultural sources of American foreign policy and thus serves as a partial corrective to studies that overemphasize economic motives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Derek Taylor
...
Hello, my name is Heather, I have become enamored of this man.

Derek Taylor, I mean; his work, his manner, his mantality
(Yes, the spelling is correct.)
And I've never met him before.
And I never will. *grin*
But that's not the point, is it? The point is
to enjoy people like this, wherever they
can be found---And you?

And I post this on Valentines' Day. *laugh* Which I do not
believe in. I don't think Derek Taylor did either. The idea of
only ONE day of love expressed...

is abhorent. *grin*

Here, we have, exhibit A: a guy who influenced the Beatles, hung
with them, helped with them, and I find nothing, when I come
looking for him.

Well, guess what? This book rocks. And the prose, and the people
Derek talked about--people, yes, so many people--and the
insights, are as swift and as bright and as deep as a new
thought, in the dark.

Who'd've thought I'd go looking, for the first time, in my life, for the Beatles, and find this guy.

Amazing. You should read him.
As he sure as hell read
all of YOU *grin*

Find this book. Get this man's work seen.

I thank you.

Meanwhile, read this piece, that I wrote, after searching for Derek. You may just like it.

+++

Billions and billions of Beatle pictures. You can't see the fawking ROAD for Beatles pictures. Every once in a while though I'd find Derek. Hiding on a page. Standing so close, so intent, so integral to the mood, you almost wondered why you hadn't seen him more often in all those BLOODY photos. Needless to say, he (and others like him) had been cropped from view. We're here to see the Beatleboys, not the Beatleaides, not the Beatlekeepers, not the Beatle people so essential to the smooth-running operation that most fans didn't even know who the hell they were.

Only that they often stood as a roadblock, a deterrent, a buffer to Beatle-baked people who clamoured for yet another BLOODY photo, yet another autograph, yet another insightful interview, yet another money-making endorsement, yet another banal or boring conversation with their Beatle boygods.

Meanwhile, people like Derek Taylor provided an attempt at clarity, a soothing song in the ever-widening gyre of madness that hurricaned about them; a smoke-festooned-and-Scotch-laced Alka Seltzer to the moptop FabFour sanity and sense of self.

It wasn't just Derek. Without Brian Epstein, Peter Brown, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall or even George Martin, I don't think the Beatles would have existed.

Oh, they'd be out there somewhere, playing in a dingy Cavernlike club. But I don't believe they would have reached the almost mythic proportions of pop/rock stardom they enjoyed (even to this day) without the incredibly devoted, rational and skilled people backing them up, holding their drunken heads or taking a punch for the Beatle benefit. Less insightful folks might feel otherwise, but if you look close, REAL close, you can see a pattern in the chain of command that surrounded these lovely lads from Liverpool.

And standing close by, cigarette barely dangling from his lips, his expression so dark, so unaffected was Derek. Derek's dark eyes always watching, watching. Exuding calm. (Whether he felt calm or not.) To be found in a photo. More than just a confidante; more than just a majordomo; more than just a father-figure to four cheeky chappies from a small seaport in the British Isles, Derek was their friend. He carried insights into each and every Beatle boy that shown through every press release he ever composed. He'd be on hand for all the cheer and all the paranoid doomsaying. Following George out a flashbulbed front door; standing protectively within shielding distance of any one Beatle that was about; striding through an airport walkway, like a military sergeant in a dark sharp-shouldered Savile row suit, offsetting Paul and John's white ones; leaning against an Apple-rotting rooftop wall, dressed in a caramel-coloured car coat, listening in a reverie to one last let-it-be concert from those Beatle boys he so adored; uncropped from a classic Beatle photo (There is a photo of Paul and his then girlfriend Jane Asher, returning from holiday in the Virgin Islands. I found a photo where Derek is walking along right beside Jane. Ha!)...there he is. Derek Taylor.

You should know this man. And be inspired by his words. As I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars simple actions, big difference
The stories from Ingrid's Newkirk's books are so inspiring and sweet, they remind us how one can indeed make a difference in the worldand that it doesn't have to be a huge endeavor. Simple actions that enable people to expand in their experience and well being can be found anytime, anywhere if one is actually present with what is happening.
The spirit of these collectedstories from well known actors and personalities, remind me of the work Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment,by award winning authors Ariel and Shya Kane.Reading their books and participating in their workshops in New York City has allowed me to directly experience making a difference in my environment plus a sense of satisfaction, regardless of the circumstances. What a gift to find authors that are giving back to the world by celebrating the brilliance in each of us! You too, can make a difference and have an impact in the well being of those around you, effortlessly and with simple actions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Famous and not so famous people patting themselves on the back
I really didnt know who the author Ingrid Newkirk was until I wasted my money on this book. What a huge disappointment this is. A complete waste of paper. It is a compilation of articles I guess you'd say by mostly famous people patting themselves on the back for whatever cause I guess they support and most of them are supporting the authors causes, mainly PETA ... I mean the Dalai Lama gives a rousing two paragraphs on having compassion. A complet waste for me and I just love books like this, or what I thought this was.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I thought that this book was about famous people who made a difference in the lives of animals, but, it is not.It is rubbish about famous people and how wonderful Ingrid Newkirk thinks they are.Spare me!What a waste of a Christmas gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Ingrid is a hero.Great book; the stories are wide ranging and vivid.Truly inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Un Livre Formidable!
This book will inspire and motivate anyone to be a better person. I expected mostly animal rights stories and while many of these incredible people love animals, it is not the main direction of the book.
The diversity of all these people, from all walks of life, makes this book even more enriching and fascinating. I couldn't put it down.
This will be the perfect birthday or holiday gift to many of my friends and relatives.
Bravo Ms. Newkirk! Because of particularly choosing these individuals, your own sensitivity, compassion and values shine through these wonderful and valuable people's accounts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars IT WOULD'NT BE THE FIRST TIME
If one looks at history, you'll find out that hoaxing ones death or in this case, finding a look a like to replace a famous person and keep that information concealed at all costs until everybody involved has passed on, is'nt to far fetched. There have been other situations in our history that were'nt at all what we were lead to believe.

Case in point, the legendary Jesse James death hoax still rages on after over one hundred years one both sides. Was it really Charlie Bigalow or was it realy Jesse James who was killed in that house that day. They claim that J.J.'S cousin Bob Ford shot him in the back of the head n the bullit came out at the corner of his eyebrow making a small nice exit hole.AAAAAAexcuse me but have you ever seen what a 44 or 45 bullit hole exit looks like? It would have exploded his face. Legend has it that they made a pact to not reveal their identitys until they all had reached the age of one hundred years of age. Of course none of them thought that they would live that long and after that date had passed, he was drawn out from those shadows and to everybodys suprise this 100 hundred year old man had the identical indentifying marks on his body that the Pinkerton detective agency had on the Jesse James of the 1870's.Not only that, but the investigater tracked down many people who were known to have known J.J. back in the day and 5 of the old James gangs members who were still alive all said that ol J. Frank Dalton was really the real Jesse james. Yet after this, the debate still goes on.

Yes I know that this review is supposed to be about Paul McCartney, but what Im trying to get at is that some times these things do happen and there's always going to be no holds barred denial, skoffing skeptics ect...ect... then low and behold, after everybody involved is gone or that one person is gone, then the truth is let out.

Remember several years ago when Iron Eyes Cody died at the age of 91 and only then did we find out that he did'nt have one drop of Indian blood in him but was in all reality 100% Italian?Yet he passed him self off as a Cherokee Indian all these years and nobody was the wiser. To top it off, the Indian Nation knew it all along and never said a word until MR. Cody passed away.

What would everybody think if after the man that we know as Paul McCartney passed on and two weeks later, information is released that proves without question that this man really did take the place of MR McCartney so many years ago and had to forget who he really was and played out this roll for all these years without anybody being the wiser, all for the fans.Ward Frazier Greensburg IN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Get the Newer Version...
This book was completely overhauled and re-published in 2005 under the title TURN ME ON, DEAD MAN: The Beatles And The "Paul-Is-Dead" Hoax, and it is much improved and expanded over this older volume. Both books are great, but the newer one is...well, newer. It's available here at Amazon.com for around $15.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Khaili!
My friend, Andru The Engineer, has written the be-all and end-all book on the moment that froze female hearts throughout the western world. It wasn't enough that he married Linda Eastman; then it looked like he fell off the planet.

This is an exhaustive look at the phenom that swept AM radio and even took in some of the 'serious' media. It was one of those stories that was totally bizarre, but you'd catch yourself thinking "yeh, but what if--?"

Andru and I spent many hours--probably way too many for his parents taste--watching HELP! and A HARD DAY'S RUT on the TV in his parent's den.I'd like to take some credit for inspiring him to begin this book...but that would be quite a stretch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far More Credible Than A Black Carnation
Beatle fans always knew that someday there'd be a whole book on the subject, but this book surpassed my expectations. Before reading this book, every written account of the 'Paul Is Dead' rumor seemed the same to me...not much more than a list of the 'clues' and the Beatles' explanations. But Andre Reeves' book is not just a listing of clues...in fact, he saves that for the very end of the book. Instead he wisely gets behind the origin and evolution of the rumor, showing how a college student's tongue in cheek newspaper article snowballed into a national obsession, almost like a small fire gradually getting out of control and turning into an inferno. Reeves puts the reader right into those crazy weeks of October 1969 so that he/she can get a glimpse of a world unsure if the baby-faced Beatle was still walking the Earth, barefoot or otherwise. The accounts from the rumor's key players provide information previously unavailable in any Beatle books, and shed new light on many areas. Those who continue to profess that the Beatles concocted the whole thing really need to read this book before uttering another word about it. If you just want a fun-to-read listing of clues, there are many web sites that provide one. But if you are looking for some true stories behind the rumor that put it in a whole new perspective (in other words, if you truly wish to learn something,) 'Turn Me On Dead Man' more than satisfies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting bit of pop culture
I enjoyed the book.I doubt people who don't like the Beatles (horrors!) or who don't care about weird episodes in American pop culture will be interested. The narritive style may be a little too novelized to swallowbut it is presented in an entertaining fashion. When does the movie comeout?

By the way, I know of one clue not mentioned. On the cover of theU.S. album _Yesterday and Today_, the Beatles are posing around a steamertrunk with Paul sitting inside.Looking at this cover from the right anglemakes it look like he is in a coffin.

This, of course, is in the eye ofthe beholder. ... Read more

Published to mark his 50th birthday, this is a biography of one of popular culture's most prominent figures, Paul McCartney. Drawing on the memories of his friends - and his enemies - it celebrates his extravagant achievements without ignoring either his creative inconsistency or the less engaging aspects of his personality. It investigates the paradox of a billionaire who claims he is still a working class lad; an advocate of sexual equality who demands that his wife does the cleaning and ironing. Tracing the development of his career, the author records how McCartney's determination to have his own way led to the break-up of the Beatles and his next group, Wings, and led him into artistic and commercial disasters such as "The Magical Mystery Tour" and "Give My Regards to Broad Street". The book also discusses how the pain of his break with John Lennon drove him to heroin and how he turned that pain to his financial advantage; and explores his relationships with his father, with his wife, Linda, and with Lennon. ... Harvey, The White Stripes, Syd Barrett, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, etc.). Les références dont s'inspire Bob Dylan pour faire évoluer son art sont non seulement à rechercher du côté de musiciens américains légendaires, tels Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie et Robert Johnson, mais aussi chez ...http://booksllc.net/?l=fr ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good picture book
If you are thinking of buying this book because of Paul McCartney, well, at least the pictures deserve attention. This book lacks information about Paul himself, but it's a very good way of showing (literally!)him and his life, with and without the Beatles. ... Read more
