Paranoid Hype Masquerading As Analysis
While certainly the jihadists and some leftist have done a lot of harm to the USA and the West, the premise of this book, that there is some grand alliance or conspiracy between these utterly dissimilar groups is total rubbish. Like a lot of right wing media types these days, what Mr. McCarthy is really saying is not only is everyone who has a different political outlook than he is wrong and un-American, they are all working seamlessly together to undermine this Great Republic that only people like him have the right to define and defend. Are there leftists who have advanced the cause of jihadists one way or another, sure. But the same goes for the right. The goons who still support the War in Iraq, like all the old white GOP candidates in the 2008 presidential debate after Ron Paul got the boot, the same ones who basically hate Muslims, have changed their tune in the last couple of years to "We freed all these Muslims oppressed by Saddam, so be grateful to us, little brown brothers. We are reliving WW ll again!" That ignores that for all of Sadddam's faults, at least he kept the lid on the religious crazies who we released and then allowed Al Qaeda and Iranian agents to take root there after we invaded. Saddam also was defiantly anti Iranian, which is why he was working about an a bomb, not to give to his jihadist enemies on the sly so they could detonate it in LA Harbor. So in essence we advanced thejihadists' cause by opening up Iraq, which is tilting more and more towards Iran's influence every day. Add to that Bush's friends in Saudi Arabia, like the ruling family and the Bin Ladens. Does this mean I am suggesting that there a conspiracy between the right and jihadists?, NO. I just mentioned it to undermine his phony conspiracy theory.

Well, if you listen to a lot of talk radio and FOX, and can't differentiate between a moderate Republican and Lenin, then this book is for you. If you have any real integrity or scholarship, then this book might come in handy for wood stove fuel.

The Grand Jihad
This is an outstanding book which should be read by all persons who care about the future of our country. Congratulations to the author, publisher and Amazon for making it available.

Know Your Enemy
This review is only an introduction to a book that in the beginning maps out the spider web of front groups for the Ikwhan (the Muslim Brotherhood) that most prominently includes CAIR, the Council for American Islamic Relations, which was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial. After that the author explores the largely unspoken alliance between the political left and the Islamists. One chapter covers Barack Obama's biography and his position in all this.

The quality of his research in the later parts of the book can be seen in the solid conclusion that Obama was legally adopted by Lolo Soetoro, the Indonesian Muslim that his mother married and then divorced. The Hawaiian divorce papers in 1980 refer to the couple's child who was no longer a minor. Obama was 19 at the time. Significantly he was schooled as a Muslim in Indonesia. That tidbit is from his half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who stated to the New York Times that "her whole family was Muslim." In just a few pages McCarthy does what the "mainstream media" refused to do in 2008. He tears into the lies, obfuscations and stone-walling that Obama and his campaign used to hide from his associations with left-wing radicals (e.g. Bill Ayers) and Islamists (e.g. Rashid Khalidi, former PLO spokesman).

Political elites, including the George W. Bush Administration during 2005-8, have largely avoided a basic task in fighting any war: know your enemy. If you want to learn what motivates the enemy in a struggle that may occupy most of the 21st century, read this book. Otherwise you may remain blissful in your ignorance - for awhile. ... Read more

Old time knowledge
Small package packed with knowledge on a single small subject-probably represents the future of issue poltics as governments have grown too large to be understood.Author has track record of knowledge and should be of interest for his more major books and his detailed knowledge and experiences in the subject matters.To some extent the Dept of Justice has always had a political role but taking the side of Muslim terrorists is beyond the pale.
The format or intent of this small work is to emulate the phamplets familar to historians of early American history.The essence seems to be that the workings of the Obama administration are, in many ways, unamerican-knowledge that drives the tea party sorts to resist.

Cute diversion
Ellie has just celebrated her 30th birthday crying her eyes out in her bathroom after catching her latest boyfriend snogging an unattractive woman. Feeling horrible about the state of her life she embarks on a road trip to locate her 80's crush, Andrew McCarthy, who she just knows will be able to help her figure out why life didn't turn out like the ending of one of those brat pack movies she adored.

This book is very light, with some sharp-edged humor (although I must admit that a lot of it went over my head as it's very UK based) and some over the top outrageous characters (a giant transvestite, anyone?).Julia and Ellie, like most chick-lit types, are a little too shallow for my liking but not so much so that was overly annoyed. Loved the bit where Julia and Ellie ran into C. Thomas (call me Thom) Howell. It brought back some long buried memories and gave me some terrifying dreams of my old skyhigh 80's hair. This book also brought to life in horrifying technicolor my memories of Madonna black rubber bracelets, the crush on Corey Hart and the endless hours spent spraying my hair into a perfect rats nest. Thanks for the memories (and nightmares!) Jenny Colgan.

Junk science rides again.
I have nothing more to add to the well reasoned criticisms of this book. Read the other One Star reviews.
I only want to say this. How does Dr. Wakefield explain my own autistic son who exhibited clear symptoms of the disorder before ever receiving ANY vaccinations of any kind?And what about all the autistic children before there were MMR vaccines? Oh, I forgot. Before we had medical science to blame, we blamed it on bad mothering. I wonder what the next generation will blame it on. Back to demonic posession, perhaps.

Good old fashioned witch-hunt . . .
The whole Wakefield situation can be summed up by a saying from one of the greatest minds of recent millenia, Voltaire:"It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong"

Vaccination Confusion
This book is well worth reading especially if you are the parent of an Autistic child. It is good to hear both sides of the vaccination story and be able to make your own judgement. Dr Wakefield is not anti-vaccination but is against the 3 in one jab for small children who do not have an immune system to cope with this. With the emphasis on safety in the Industrial World it's a shame the Medical side of things can't follow suit. I would imagine that should a single Measles shot be available then many more parents would take up this option in an attempt to protect their child either way. I cannot see Pharmaceutical companies changing back to individual doses as this would amount to an admission of a problem.

The paper, the children, the medical school, and the medical council behind a controversy
Especially since there exists significant controversy surrounding this book, as a reviewer my focus is to help the potential reader of this book understand the content rather than argue about matters that have little to nothing to do with the actual scope of this book. In reading some of the reviews here, as well as the great amount of comments that have been submitted in response to these reviews (especially shortly after book release), it is apparent that some have not actually read this book, and the reader of this review can rest assured that this reviewer has read the entire content (an action which is aligned with his consistent policy to do so prior to submitting any review).

In pursuing possible links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurologic injury in children, these events concluded with Wakefield losing his position in the Department of Medicine at London's Royal Free Hospital as well as his license to practice medicine in the UK. Because of the complexity of the events leading up to these ends, it is difficult for any review of this size to give this book justice. The first chapter discusses the original paper written by physicians (among them Wakefield) at the Royal Free Hospital and subsequently published in "The Lancet" (the self-described "world's leading general medical journal and specialty journals in Oncology, Neurology and Infectious Diseases") in 1998 entitled "Ileal lymphoid nodular hyperplasia, non-specific colitis and pervasive developmental disorder in children".

This paper discussed "clinical findings in 12 children with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) occurring in association with a mild-to-moderate inflammation of the large intestine...accompanied by swelling of the lymph glands in the intestinal lining...predominantly in the last part of the small intestine". At the same time, parents of 9 (8 in the original paper) of the 12 ended up indicating that onset of ASD symptoms occurred following exposure to the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. As explained by the author, the seemingly small number of 12 reflects the nature of a "case series", of which this original paper was the first. Wakefield sites Hennekens and Buring's "Epidemiology in Medicine" explanation of case series - "the experience of a single patient or group of patients with a similar diagnosis" that "may lead to formulation of a new hypothesis". May. The discussion continues by indicating that an analytic study can then be performed to investigate possible causal factors. The case study itself is not designed to investigate possible causality.

No hypothesis was stated in the paper, and because of this there is no hypothesis to test. The paper simply indicated that the authors "did not prove an association between measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and the syndrome described" and that "further investigations are needed to examine this syndrome and its possible relation to the vaccine". If it were not for the seriousness of this topic, the dialogue between medical school dean Zuckermann and the press, the proceedings at the General Medical Council, and the nature of many of the myths surrounding this controversy and the resultant misinformation that has resulted would be rather amusing. Wakefield is very exhaustive in his presentation, so be prepared for one of the most dense texts written for a general audience that you have ever read. While some portions of the text can be difficult to follow at times, the common themes that run throughout enable readability.

In addition to a thorough discussion of the original case series paper, the children involved in the case series paper, the effort to terminate vaccine safety research, the press briefing following case series paper publication, the events surrounding the distancing of the editor and the other authors from the case series paper, and the General Medical Council (GMC) proceedings, Wakefield provides pertinent historical information in the concluding chapters of this book that might be of interest to some readers, especially since context can help provide additional perspective to a topic that has increasingly become more controversial in recent years due to the apparent increase in autism, the desire to discover causes in order that autism might be treated, and the conflicts of interest that reside within and between some of the parties involved in this debate.

While the author provides a historical backdrop throughout this book, it is not until chapter nine that he discusses to any significant degree events prior to the last 15 years. This reviewer paused when he read the first sentence of the tenth chapter, where the author stated that he has "often wondered where autism might be today had it not fallen into the hands of child psychiatrists". While a new syndrome, "dementia infantilis", later called Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD), was described in 1908 within the "Journal for Research and Treatment of Juvenile Feeblemindedness", it was not until 1943 that child psychiatrists first laid claim to autism (and readers may recall recent reports in the media that indicate ASD will continue to be listed in the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (DSM-5) set to be published in a couple years).

Wakefield also provides an examination of the diagnosis process, urging alongside other researchers to standardize studies on comprehensive neurological and medical investigation, because autism rates cannot be compared across studies without regard to statistical sample or comprehensiveness. In the words of Wakefield, "it took a group of gastroenterologists to recognize the significance of these symptoms, not through some preternatural wisdom, but through the diligent application of their training. A new syndrome was described and the findings replicated around the world. Erasure from the Medical Register is a small price to pay for the privilege of working with affected families".

Great to hear Andrew's side of the story
I found this book most helpful in understanding what Andrew Wakefield discovered and what happened as a result of publishing his findings. It astounds me that findings as big as a link between MMR vaccine and autism have not been taken seriously enough to cause governments stop using it. However it boils down to money in the end, big pharmaceutical companies with big profits and it all comes at the cost of our children. The consensus in many fields is that language is well designed for its purpose, and became so either through natural selection or by virtue of non-biological constraints on how language must be structured. Awesome!
The Landry News is a really great book full of comedy and fun! I think that this is such a great book! Cara Landry made her own newspaper called The Landry News but it doesn't always have the nicest things in it at the start of the book. I think that this book is so good it probably encouraged at least a few people to make their own newspaper and be just like Cara! This book has so much details on the newspaper Cara publishes that it practically tells you how to make one and what to put in it! I think this book is fantastic! I really enjoyed it.

A great book in any language!
I am a mother of three bicultural, bilingual kids being raised in Japan. Since they attend Japanese schools, I try to keep up the English at home, and part of that means reading to them (perhaps beyond the age that parents usually would in English). A friend passed on a copy of 'The Landry News'. I hadn't heard of the author before, but I liked the story synopsis and starting reading it to my two girls, ages 12 and 9. After the first page, my older daughter(7th grade) exclaimed, "I've read it--in Japanese!" Turns out it was in her school library, and she read it in 6th grade. Next question: Did she like it? You bet! She loved reading it in Japanese for herself, and loved having me read it to her in English, as did little sister. Interesting plot twists and engaging characters, laced with some sharp humour, make this book a winner in our eyes. Even my teen son (15) sat in and listened when he had time some nights. Highly recommended.

Fantastic!
I just finished reading this with my second grade children and they loved it.They wanted to know why I had tears in my eyes...similar to when I finished reading, "The Last Holiday Concert" with them.Andrew Clements is a fabulous author who likes to teach as he entertains.Each chapter ends and I find myself not able to put the book down, "Just one more chapter!"You will love all of his books!

The Landry Review
I thought "The Landry News" was okay in the chapters 1-7, but after that it got awesome!The book starts off with a girl named Cara Landry who is in fifth grade.Cara loves the editorials in all newspapers.Cara is bored because her teacher, Mr. Larson doesn't teach at all-all he does is read a newspaper while the students work REALLY HARD!!!Cara makes a newspaper for her project to tell people about her teacher's LAZINESS.
Mr. Larson takes it off of the board, gets really mad, rips it up and throws it away.
That was the FIRST time anyone had seen Mr. Larson mad!So it was clear,the Landry News needed revision.Cara asked the teacher if she can go to the library with Joey [computer typist] to work on a "project". They go to the library and type the #2 edition of the Landry News
Afterward they showed it to Mr. Larson, he said it was good.Mr. Larson asked what Cara's favorite part of a newspaper is.Cara replied as editorials -because it shows the heart of the newspaper, where the writer says things that have emotion. One of Cara's new habits is making the Landry News every Friday.
Dr. Barns [principal] did not like the Landry News and because of that he wanted Mr. Larson fired, but the students defend him in the book. At the end a student reads a story about his parents getting divorced.

I would recommend this book. It has good listings of emotion. I guarantee you will LOVE the Landry News!

Cara Landry is a new student at Denton Elementary and when she gets to her new school she searched for the school newspaper club. So she did and her firstnews paper was aboutMr. Larson her teacher that was slaking off and even though he would see the paper she still published it. But she published it under true and mercy because it was the truth and it was mercy to Mr. Larson. Plus when everyone saw Cara's newspaper they knew that was the truth and then they wanted to get other teachers in trouble because of what they do wrong.
Then Cara receives an article called lost and found, but she decides to publish it even though it was a very heavy non-fiction article for Denton Elementary. Then the princable finds one of the copies and so he hates Mr. Larson and it was a great way to get him fired. Now there is a school board meeting and it's up to the kids to save Mr. Larson's job.
The genre don't judge a person by there looks is the theme is never let anything get in your way. Cara is very shy, loves to wright,she's carring, helpful. The author might of wrote this book to tell you never let anything get in your way
