Very entertaining
Another great book by Martinez. The story gets bigger and bigger as it goes. Well developed interesting characters.

Fun and lighthearted, with a wonderful sense of humor. Both me and my husband read it one after the other. We also loved the Gil's all fright Diner. That was how we found this writer.

This was a hilarious book..If you like Terry Pratchett or Terry Brooks Andover Try this book!Never Dead Ned is a great character though his name sounds like he can't die its more lke he can't stay dead he dies all the time..When he ends up in charge of Ogre Company his life as it is will change forever I can't say more you have to read this book!!

In the Company of Ogres

"Ned had learned there are worse things than dying. Dying over and over again."

So begins an uproarious comic fantasy that, like so many others of its genre, tosses up pretty much every element a serious fantasy can have. In three hundred pages, Martinez dumps Sword of Shannara, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Dragonriders of Pern, Dune, Star Wars and all types of Greek and Nordic mythology more times than you can count.

However, unlike many spoof novels, Company of Ogres has an actual sense of depth and meaning that goes beyond the humor. The novel is about a man named Never Dead Ned, a nickname forged for him by the fact that, according to folklore, he cannot die. The truth is quite the opposite; he dies quite a bit (at the beginning of the novel Ned has died forty-nine times). He just has the tendency to not stay dead. Unfortunately for him, every time he dies he takes a reminder from the injury that kills him (for instance, he has had his arm chopped off and now it has a mind of its own, and he has been scarred across the face, and now has only one eye). He is sick of this, and is trying to stay alive and safe for the remainder of his years until he dies of old age (which he hopes he will not return from).

After sustaining a job at Accounting for an army entitled the Legion, and doing quite a good job of it, he is sent to go command a section of the Legion called Ogre Company. Ogre Company is usually your "last stop on the way out of the Legion." It is home to the outcasts of the Legion, plus a bunch of ogres. The last ten or so commanders had been strangely disappearing and never being heard from again, and the Legion figured why not place a man who can't die in charge...just in case the members of the company were killing the commanders.

The storyline is based off of romance. Two women in Ogre Company fall in love with Ned a few days after he arrives, dying a couple of times on his way. The two women are Regina, a normally angry Amazon warrior, who is part of the threesome of the highest ranked soldiers in OC (they argue frequently over who is the highest ranked), and Miriam, a siren who is called the "morale sergeant," who tries to keep the army in high spirits. However, another of the three highest ranked, a large ogre named Frank, is in love with Regina, but likes Ned. The third of the high ranks is Gabel, an orc who is suspiciously goblin-esque, who wants to see Ned gone.

However, when Ned finds out who he truly is, why he keeps being revived, and why he is being stalked by demons, all of that becomes small matter, and Ned has to make the decision between life and death, the decision that will affect the whole universe.

I thought this book was quite well written, with witty dialogue, and parts you can't help but laugh at. Martinez is talented, and I look forward to reading his other works. The way he weaves in little things is astoundingly subtle, but placed just at the right time for you to make a realization of his commentary, and laugh shamelessly.

Mindless fun
Reminiscent of the hellmouth situated beneath Sunnydale in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" lore, the small desert town of Rockwood is located on top of the "Gate of the Old Gods."These are not the grandfatherly, benevolent class of gods, but the evil, world-destroying, slithery, sinister kind (no, that's not the "Little Shop of Horrors" plant on the book's front cover - the plants are actually benign).Consequently, supernatural phenomena (zombies, ghosts, chupacabra, blood-thirsty spider-rat-piranha things, etc.) are routine around those parts.Events begin to crescendo out of control, however, when a pretty young high school student (a.k.a. Mistress Lilith, Queen of Night) and her lustful, dim-witted boyfriend/disciple try to open the gate.As the apocalypse draws nigh, the world's only chance for survival lies in the hands of a stubborn diner waitress, a vampire, and (the paws of) a werewolf.

Largely foregoing mystery, the roles are revealed in quick order (with one notable exception).But if the story plays out predictably to form, the journey is entertaining enough.The characters, though lacking depth, are likable.And though the story sticks to the shallows, Martinez does throw in the occasional thought worthy of contemplation to anyone interested.A few examples: trying to identify the "good reason" people do evil or harm others is futile; the "vampire hunter" is the undead's boogeyman; life without a final destination (death) threatens to lose focus and meaning.

The story was a fun blend of dark fantasy, horror, and humor.Fans of Christopher Moore will find themselves on familiar ground.

Amazing!!!
I was looking for a book I could read quickly that wasn't romance. I found it! This book was hilarious, strange and yes BLOODY but not too much of those things. I also found some insightful things in it (okay maybe only one, but still) Great book, you WON'T be disappointed!!!

fast humor
I picked up `Gil's All Fright Diner' when it was recommended by a friend I met at a writer's conference.The opening immediately drew me in.Martinez promotes first-page interest through unique situational humor, which reminds me of Christopher Moore's approach.This humor continues to pop up, complete with many surprises.

There's something compelling about a vampire and a werewolf driving down the road with the back seat filled to capacity with exactly seventy-six beer cans.Not that I'm promoting drunken driving, but in the interest of public safety, they do eventually find safe-haven in a diner full of zombies.That's pretty worthy stuff, and it continues right up to the last page.

The lack of a major internal struggle -- or even a single main character -- didn't bother me as it should.That is undoubtedly because the author commits to showing and dialogue as opposed to a slower pacing story style.We have no time to dwell on a human story.Considering this, thumbs up to the slam-bam approach.The book is top-drawer funny and quick, much in the vein of the 1998 version of Temors.

Gil's Rocks My Socks
It rocks.

We're talking, vampires, wolves, and zombies. OH MY.

When Duke and Earl (hey--I just got that!) run out of gas, they end up at an all night diner full of paranormal problems.

This book is freakin' hilarious on so many different levels, but it's not ridiculously goofy. Martinez does a great job balancing the serious and the not-so, and I would read anything this guy writes!

Vampires who aren't emo and werewolves that aren't 16 year old boys in literature? Seems like an odd thing not to have in a werewolf/vampire story.

A Lee Martinez has created a Texas style, macabre masterpiece, steak dinner with Gil's All Fright Diner.

I Love Daisy
I'm a BIg fan of Daisy Martinez.I watch her on the CREATE channel.My two yr old just stops what ever he is doing when she comes out.

I had to get her books.I started to make her dishes the next day after getting her books.

Imitation of the Old Fiery Daisy
I have been reading and using Daisy's first (PBS) cookbook and I have been blown away by it.I watch her PBS series (from 2005) over and over again.She's such a spitfire! And her recipes seem so authentic.I have searched out culantro and been mightily impressed.
This new book.I don't know.I know I won't use it as often as the first.She looks like a Soccer Mom, now, and she uses shortcuts in some of the recipes (Minute rice!)
I say, DAISY!. get back to your roots and teach us more of the authentic latin cuisines you know.I've got your old sofrito bagged in my freezer in 1/2 cup portions. And I loved the themesong to your first series.Takes a good half hour to get it out of my mind after each episode.First cookbook was nominated for prestigious awards, and it deserved them.Get back to that state of mind and I'll give your next book a try, but not without checking it out in person at a brick and mortar store before ordering online.Please return to the basics of Latin cooking and make us follow you, not you follow American ingredients.I love you Daisy! You should definitely be up there with Rick Bayless, considering your wonderful Latino upbringing.

The recipes are easy and if you really want to know how to make Puerto Rican dishes without going to Puerto Rico get this book.

From Unknown Worlds....
This author's work is always enjoyable, but this one seems lighter in tone than his previous work. It reminds me very much of the sort of fantasy which appeared in a fondly remembered pulp magazine called "Unknown" or "Unknown Worlds," in which writers like Heinlein, DeCamp, Kuttner, and Poul Anderson sort of reinvented fantasy, generally using humor and contemporary settings.Well worth reading

If you like Terry Pratchett (especially Good Omens) and/or Douglas Adams, Don't Miss this Book
The subject of my review says it all.If you've ever read and enjoyed the work of Terry Pratchett (particularly Good Omens) or the off-beat British humour of Douglas Adams, then this is a book for you.

Fantasy set in modern times
As always, A. Lee Martinez brings to the table a well crafted novel, with interesting characters and moving plot lines.The premise of this novel is that gods, thought of as mythological to us, exist and through sacrifices can gain favor from their patron deity.Phil and Terry, the novel's main human characters, are looking for just a little help from a deity, and thus chose one named Lucky, who brings luck to those in his following.If this was just some cautionary tale of the pitfalls of riches and such, this novel would not have been so good.But rather, through the course of the novel, characters must grow, either by moving on and finding a new role for themselves of by doing selfless acts for the good of others.As a side note, the author did an excellent job of picking many different mythological characters from many different belief systems, that shows no favoritism to classical Greek and Roman deities.This is truly a good novel and highly recommend it for its character development but also for the story that is just plain fun.

A wonderful adventure
I picked those book up from the library and did.not know much about it.What I just finshed, was a funny and interesting book that kept me interested to the end.Some of the books I have read lately have been depression or boring, and this book made me smile. I enjoyed the story beginning to end, and this differernt world the author puts you just makes me want to read more.

A Divine Diversion
Imagine a world where gods and humans directly interact. Then imagine the possibilities. Such a fun book, and a fast read--even for me who manages an average sized book every two weeks. I think everyone should sit down every now and then with just this kind of clever and lighthearted material. You have a minor but successful god of fortune, his highly likeable aimless friend Quick, aka serpent god Quetzalcoatl, a love goddess who made the grave mistake of falling in love herself turning her into the goddess of tragedy and heartbreak, and a rogue god of choas and death (who has one of the best lines, which is actually borrowed from the movie Army of Darkness). More literary than thrilling
A well written mystery relies as much on the language as it does the clues.That's why it's tricky to translate one and why it's necessary to read such a translation with a generous heart.The Oxford Murders is a five star read but the mystery rates about a three.

The Oxford of Martinez' unnamed protagonist is an interesting place and the suspense created by a serial killer who announces each murder with a note containing a puzzle is nice. Snippets of information about the history of mathematics add some meat to the plot, and though I figured out whodunnit pretty early on, the book is so beautifully written finishing it was a pleasure.

Well-developed characters with a variety of secrets, a first person POV that is unusually perceptive, and a leisurely pace make this book stand out from the usual murder-in-an-academic-setting of say, Amanda Cross or Joan Hess.

Christmas gift
I ordered this book shortly before Christmas for my grandma. It arrived fast and was in great condition. It made a great and easy gift.

Interesting
Though some of the explanations of mathematical problems were well over my head, I found the book quite readable and interesting.I also enjoyed a pleasant feeling of competence when I figured out the principle behind the series that is shown on the cover all by myself; probably laughably easy to some, but everything is relative, yes?The identity of the murderer was not at all obvious to me; nor were the other surprises along the way.I found the entire thing intriguing and was entertained throughout.

Pages missing
There were a couple of pages missing. I dont know why people would want to get pages from this book. The story wasnt very thrilling. Kind of a kids' book of puzzle with a little sex thrown in.

Feliz Navidad!
One of the women that I've admired most in my life is my favorite aunt.I've always adored her for her blue-black hair that shone iridescent in the sun, her sense of humor and her ability to throw remarkable, sometimes huge parties almost effortlessly.She is the only woman I've ever known who could and often did spend the entire afternoon before a bash in the pool.Daisy's Holiday Cooking makes it clear that Daisy Martinez is another hostess that may come very close to that class and she makes no bones about sharing her secrets with us.

I first came across Daisy while flipping channels on the TV, putting on a family dinner for her husband and children, a dinner thatfeatured a Flourless Chocolate Cake with Chile.Make no mistake - I love Latin food, I adore flourless chocolate cake and I am definitely a bit of a chile-head.Daisy's cake appears on page 36 of Daisy's Holiday Cooking: Delicious Latin Recipes for Effortless Entertaining and the one recipe is worth the price of the book alone, though I admit that I make this with ground hot New Mexico chile, not cayenne.

Monster ? not so much
I loved Gil's All Fright Diner and was really looking forward to Monster. Monster is a cryptoid catcher. The book starts off strong with Monster encountering yeti in the frozen foods aisle of the Food Plus Mart but it went downhill for me after that. Chester, a paper gnome and Monster's partner, was my favorite character. I would have been interested in more scenes involving Monster's succubus girlfriend and his rivalry with a fellow cryptoid hunter. The Fate of the Universe stuff and the villain of the piece were mostly forgettable and left me yawing. This one failed to hook me.

The Really Big Questions
Once again, a fantasy writer steps forward to tackle the really big questions concerning Life, The Universe and what flavor of ice cream yetis really like!

Judy's life is rather boring and ordinary, albeit filled with unusual memory gaps. She's working the night shift at the local grocery store for Dave, a sleep-deprived manager who barely manages. He doesn't handle it very well when Judy tells him that there is a yeti in the freezer, eating most of the ice cream (except the vanilla).

Judy goes to call Animal Control but her call is switched to the Cryptobiological Containment and Rescue Service, and Monster (who is blue that particular evening) comes to take care of the yeti. He turns it into a little rock and asks her to sign for it.

The whole thing intrigues Judy but she gets annoyed when she's told she'll forget it all in a little while. That's what happens to ordinary people when they encounter magic. She tries to give herself a clue but she does forget the whole thing--even the part where the other yeti appears and she hits it with Monster's magic bat and kills it.

Unfortunately, dead things can't be transmorgified into rocks and Monster has to lug the corpse out to his van. His sidekick, Chester, is no help because he's so two-dimensional as a character that he is made of paper. He lives in an alternate universe and merely telecommutes to work in ours.

Monster has many reasons for being blue, but aside from his changing skin color, he remains permanently blue because his girlfriend is a succubus from the Pits. She's gorgeous, she cooks, she cleans and she's a real demon in the bedroom. And that's the problem. Monster is worn out by all that sex but there's still scorch marks on the TV from the last time he tried to break up with her.

This is the story of how Monster and Judy save the world. I'm still trying to figure out if the magical stone thingy is a precursor to the iPad...seems unlikely really, as this is supposed to be fantasy and not science fiction. Whatever it is, it is terribly funny. This is an excellent book and it will cool your brain on a hot day. Highly recommended for fans of Douglas Adams and Christopher Moore! Great summer reading!

Pretty good but Harry Potter-ish
All in all, I liked Monster. A surly character with a mundane job who changes color daily and has to deal with the wierd and magical creatures that the rest of us moggles (oops, I mean non cogniscents) don't know how to deal with or how to remember over time. I liked the premise, a Cryptobiological containment officer going around dealing with dragons, fire breathing cats, yeti's, hydras and what not, but it felt a little tween novel -ish with the emo and partial cog girl Judy tagging along. There are a few sex scenes and some language keeping this book from being found in the young adult section next to Twilight and Harry Potter, but it still has that feel. It doesn't quite meet the Jim Butcher Harry Dresden or Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman Good Omens standard I have for fantasy/humor books. At the end the book tries to get deep with ideas about cosmic existance stuff if I mentioned would ruin the plot, but it feels a little forced. I do like this book and would reccomend it to fans of the Dresden series by Jim Butcher.

Fun -- but bawdy.
When I first picked up "Monster" I thought it was a junior high to high school book and wasn't sure what to make of it because it is rather bawdy at times, with strong language.However, for an adult audience it could be a fun, light read, not something to be read too seriously or deeply.

Monster, the main character, works in pest control with his sidekick Chester; they don't exterminate termites or mice but yeti, ogres, trolls, and dragons.His girlfriend is a succubus, and he simply cannot keep her happy.He ends up taking a case at a Food Plus Mart, where the night clerk Judy finds a yeti in the ice cream freezer.Judy learns things about herself, and Monster's and Judy's lives come together.

Other than the bawdy content, this was a fun book that I could recommend for adults.

Not serious fun, seriously
This was a solidly entertaining and fun read.The tone is light and corny and the humor is amusing rather than hilarious.An unnecessary character/subplot that goes nowhere (Liz), unfocused storytelling and an unlikable protagonist detract from its quality, but ultimately I still enjoyed this light and silly book. ... This book hits on all cylinders
A Nameless Witch is the first book I have read by A. Lee Martinez, and I will definitely read others. I like a story that takes me places I've never been before with characters whose company I enjoy. I like endings that are logical but also surprising. I appreciate sly humor and quirky sidekicks. In summary: This is my kind of book.

Funny, irreverent tale
The Nameless Witch is a quirky, comic, fantasy about a witch cursed with eternal beauty and a cannibalistic appetite who undertakes a quest to destroy an evil sorcerer and save a town. This light-hearted tale is thoroughly enjoyable with an amusing cast of characters including Newt, a wisecracking demon duck familiar with killer instincts, a troll named Gwurm with interchangeable body parts, Wyst of the West, a White Knight sworn to a vow of chastity, and Penelope the animated broom.

This clever story opens on a bit of a cliché with the nameless witch living locked in a basement until she is eighteen years old because of her "undead" curse, but the pace quickens when she is rescued by Ghastly Edna, who becomes her witchly mentor. Under Edna's tutelage, the Nameless Witch learns to mask her beauty and appear hideous with the aid of padded clothing and a false limp. But when Ghastly Edna is murdered, the Nameless Witch journeys to Fort Stalwart with Edna's familiar Newt on a quest to avenge her mentor's death, adopting a troll named Gwurm along the way. The funny dialogue is supported by the title character's amusing and witchly observations about the fantasy world as they embark on their quest.

After the odd trio take up residence in Fort Stalwart, the town is threatened by a goblin horde. Handsome White Knight Wyst of the West conveniently arrives to save the day and awakens the heroine's carnal appetite and her frustration as she tries to decide whether she wants to love him or eat him. Together, these oddball characters battle the goblin army and set out to find its master, Soulless Gustav, where they must survive four trials to defeat the evil sorcerer.

The plot of the story is not especially original or inventive, and there are no major surprises in store for the reader along the way, which may account for the mixed reviews. Readers who prefer dramatic conflict may be disappointed by the steady pacing, which is consistently driven by quirky, offhand humor that relies heavily on characterization. This story reminded me a bit of The Princess Bride for it's spoof-style quest humor and heartwarming characters, although the ending is not the same style of "happily ever after." This was also my first book by Martinez, so I have no basis for comparison to his other titles, which are referenced by many negative reviewers. I'm pretty picky about the books I read, and while I found the opening a bit slow, the characters are well-written and imaginative enough that I kept reading and even found myself smiling throughout the tongue-in-cheek second-half.

I'd recommend this to others with the warning not to expect a major fantasy epic. However, if you enjoy amusing tales that don't require any guesswork on the part of readers, give this story a try.

Entertaining read, but missing something
I bought this because it was recommended at Powell's book store in Portland and I thought it looked fun and interesting.While at times it was really creative-and amusing- it just never took that next step to be an amazing memorable story.

The witch never really developed into a full character. Yes, she was confused and trying to find her path- she didn't understand the body she had been given or her cannibalistic tendencies-and because of that she never really developed into something you could either love or hate. She had cravings for human meat, but she never gave in to that craving.If she had, the story would have become something of a more dramatic nature, and I can understand that that was not what the author was going for.But that would have given the character more substance.Instead, all she tries to do is pass off as a witch, and make friends (troll, sunshine, fox, white knight).If she had embraced her curse more, you would have felt more intrigued by her. Instead, when she gives up and tries to let her uncursed self win, you kind of just get the impression that she's weak- and doesn't really deserve to be the heroine of a story.

Throughout, I just felt like this story was missing something. It could have benefited from more thorough description to create more engaging characters and plot.

My Favorite Book By Martinez
I read this after Gil's All Fright Diner expecting another parody.While all the genre in-joke humor is there this book has quite an unexpected amount of heart without ever being sappy.We are gradually introduced to the pain and loneliness of our heroine without her ever resorting to whining.Her remarkable acceptance of the nature of things is a strength not often seen in fantasy heroes.It's as wacky as Martinez's other novels but it also has a warmth I enjoyed beyond my ability to express.

Nothing against Daisy Martinez personally.I ordered this through an affiliate for a anniversary gift for my wife (who is Puerto Rican).We saw one of Daisy's shows on TV and my wife was very interested.The order was put through and processed, so I figure great, our anniversary is next week, so I'll have it here in time.Today I get an email from Amazon stating the order was cancelled with no reason why. Very disappointed.Not very good customer service. Now I'll have to go find this locally if possible.

Good Book But it Gets Old
Good recipes and well written book.Lost points for the lack of pictures and because it uses the same basic ingredients for just about all the recipes.It gets old.But there were enough worthwhile recipes in the book to justify the price.

Daisy has made me a rock star in my kitchen! She has elevated my food to amazing heights. I come from a family of accomplished latin home cooks and they have all given Daisy's recipes their stamp of approval, which is not easy. Way to go Daisy! I'm looking forward to your next book!

Daisy Disappoints
Apparently there must not be much to Latin American Cuisine in terms of exotic and maninstream foods.This book was a big disappointment.Most of the recipes were of other ethnic cuisines given a "Daisy" flair.After watching her TV series several times I was intrigued.I was looking to do some serious ethnic cooking especially exoctic Latin American, Cuban, Caribbean, and Puerto Rican fare. I wanted a book that contained many recipes with Mangos, Papayas, Jicima, Plantains, Bananas, Star Anise, various roots and tubers, with different spins on meats, poultry, and seafood. When the book arrived I was disappointed to find that it was filled with classic French, European, and American fare.For example I wasn't looking for recipes like Roasted Chicken with Garlic Rub, Shellfish Saute with Parsley Garlic Sauce, Beefsteak with Onions, Grandma's Pork Chops, Creole Style Potatoes, Fried Okra, Stuffed Artichokes, Chicken with Potatoes and Wine, Fresh Cod with Clam Broth, Mexican Flan, etc. All of these recipes were found in the book and nothing very different from the same recipes that may be found in any other cookbook on Southern, Cajun and Creole, or American fare. In fairness to Daisy, the book did have a few truly Latin American recipes like Sofrito, Achiote Oil, Yucca Fritters, and a good recipe for Cuban Sandwiches.Unfortunately the only thing about this cookbook that will 'rock your world" is the outrageous asking price.Try and find a used copy if you really must have this cookbook. Sorry Daisy.

FINALLY, a real Latin food cookbook................!!!!!
I have always loved all aspects of latin food, but never knew how to authentically prepare my favorite dishes or which ingredients to buy or keep on hand. The recipes I did come across were watered down, flavorless versions of the classics, created by non-latinos. Then, several years ago, I saw Daisy's show on PBS ("Daisy Cooks!"). At the time, there were no cooking shows featuring Latino chefs and their food. I was so impressed with her show, that I bought her cookbook. What a revelation! Daisy's recipes are absolutely divine! They're easy to follow, hassle-free and the outcome is amazing! The very first recipes I made form this book were Tostones, Chiccarones (with garlic dipping sauce) and Arroz con Pollo. I followed the recipes to the tee. Couldn't believe that I made food that delicious! Tasted like a little old Puerto Rican grandmother came to my house and cooked. Shows techniques well, but the tunes and CDs are dull.
I can see how if you just picked up a nylon-string guitar
and wanted to learn to play like the Gipsy Kings you
might want this course.If you really don't play guitar
well the tunes and exercises may be useful to you,
but if you are at all proficient at traditional Flamenco
you may find the tunes here pretty uninspired.

The author does however pay a lot of attention to showing
the various hand movements to getting the correct sound for
rhythm playing in this style.These days things like this
are perhaps easier learned through video, but I got this
book several years ago when internet video was still quite
awkward.

From reviews I've read ofGraf-Martinez's courses on
traditional Flamenco I think he is a very good teacher but
this course here is targeted at people who haven't played
the guitar for very much time.SO, if you're a beginner
at guitar and want to learn to play rhumba flamenca tunes,

A solid grounding in the rumba flamenca
OVERVIEW

The popularity that's been attained by the rumba flamenca, even among people who know nothing of Flamenco and care less, is nothing short of phenomenal (indeed, to judge by the live music presented around San José's up-scale restaurant area, Santana Row, some people make a living playing nothing else). Perhaps this should not be so surprising: the rumba is far more easily intelligible than the deeper forms of Flamenco, it's fast, and it's exciting. To be able to play a rumba well, then, will get you invited to far more parties than the ability to play a seguiriya.

Gipsy Guitar is an addendum to the author's two-volume Flamenco Guitar Method, and is devoted entirely to further material on the rumba flamenca. It consists of a book, two CDs, and a CD-ROM.

PRESENTATION

The CDs are bound with the book, in paper sleeves; and the CD-ROM comes in a separate DVD case. The book is not spiral-bound, but is relatively slim and opens flat fairly easily. The printing and photographs are both very clear. The book (with its two CDs) and the CD-ROM are apparently separate products. The CD-ROM has the same content as the book.

CONTENT

The text of the book is in German and (good) English throughout. After the standard Preface and About the Author, we have a section on terminology, with the parts of the guitar and the fingers of the hands clearly labelled (in this case, in Spanish as well). This is followed by a brief history of the rumba.

The musical material, which (quite reasonably) assumes absorption of the material in the previous volumes, or at least of flamenco guitar technique generally, consists of five different rumbas, each of which is written out in its entirety in staff notation and cifra. Second guitar parts are also given, sometimes as chord symbols (and associated fretboard diagrams) with rhythms, and sometimes written out like the first guitar part. Each piece is prefaced by a detailed explanation, with photographs, of the techniques it introduces. The fingering is thorough.

CDs

The first CD consists of the five rumbas played at normal speed, and the second of exactly the same thing, but more slowly. Each rumba is presented with all instruments, then without the rhythm guitar, then without the solo guitar, making fifteen tracks in all. The two last-named versions have clear rhythmic lead-ins enabling you to play along with no trouble. The total times for the two CDs are 58'04" and 73'51" respectively.

The pieces are idiomatic and quite attractive, and not technically demanding (although neither are they beginner's pieces -- but this is not a beginner's book). In fact, if you program the five full-instrumentation, full-speed versions, they make decent listening music. The playing is solid, rhythmic, and professional.

CD-ROM

Unfortunately, the CD-ROM (dating from 2001) is Windows only, although (curiously) the author's website shows a Mac with OS X. A cursory inspection showed that there was no chance of running it on my Mac G4; of course, one of the new dual-boot Macs could be a different matter. The system requirements are:

* PC with Pentium 200 MHz (or compatible) with 8-speed CD-ROM drive.
* At least 32 MB RAM (NT/2000 at least 64 MB RAM).
* Graphics card with 16-bit (HighColor) color depth.
* Sound card.
* Windows 98/ME or Windows NT/2000.

The advertising for this CD-ROM says 'Stand-alone application -- no installation, no configuration.'

I played it on an HP machine running Windows 2000 Professional (US version 5, Service Pack 3). The first thing it did was offer (in German) to install a German version of QuickTime 4 (since I didn't have QuickTime installed at all). Out of curiosity, I let it do so, and the installation proceeded without incident (but see Website, below).

The CD-ROM then presented a menu that (after giving the choice of German or English) allows the selection of any one of the five pieces, which then plays along with the relevant sheet music, a moving cursor showing the notes currently being played. Cassette-player-like controls are shown, allowing you to do fast-rewinds and repeats. Videos of all techniques in normal and slow motion are also included, and there are various other goodies.

WEBSITE

I availed myself of the author's invitation to visit his website. A trifle to my surprise, in view of the immaculate English and Spanish in his publications, I found it to be in German only. It was only by accident I found there was a separate English-language site.

The details of his various publications were nicely laid out, with links to vendors in different countries, but I found navigation a bit of a problem, requiring frequent use of the Back button. Also, the site does not distinguish clearly between links and other graphics. There is, however, an extremely good demo of the video from the CD-ROM, so you can see exactly what you're getting.

The website also details a work-around for a potential problem (which I didn't experience) wherein the sound-track is audible but the score is invisible. This is due to Flash being disabled by default; the Advanced tab on QuickTime Settings must be used to change this.

SUMMARY

Gipsy Guitar is an extremely thorough job, confirming the impression made by the author's earlier opus. In fact, I find it hard to imagine a better one. I found the three (as I write) negative reviews on amazon.com totally incomprehensible. If you can master the material here, you should easily be able to go on to pieces such as "La Lola", (recorded on Paco Peña's second flamenco album, on CD as Philips 826 904-2), photocopied transcriptions of which have been floating about for years.

The only reservation I have is about the CD-ROM, which would be better as a DVD (as with the Method)*. Unless you're really, really stuck with the mechanics, though, I don't think the video's essential, although of course it would be nice to have.

The book/CD combo can be recommended, then, even to Mac users; and the CD-ROM also (at least for now) to those on the Dark Side.

*Update 2009: A version with a DVD instead of a CD-ROM is now apparently available.

Not that helpful for instruction
I"m a beginning player.I would recommend getting to at least an intermediate and then coming back to this. Not recommended unless you have a good base.

Dry and somewhat disappointing!!
Maybe I was expecting something unique. I thought this book was expensive and uninspired. It has a brief history of Flamenco for which is always helpful but, the examples are repetitive and not very "hip" melodically and there's not much variety. I would recommend Juan Martin's Solo Flamenco book volume 1.There are a wealth of ideas and some history behind some of the Soleas, Alegrias, Rumbas, Sevillanas etc. It also includes CD/DVD package for $20 here on Amazon, The Juan Martin is challenging, but if you want to learn this style it's going to be. You may want to skip this method

What a deception!
So many of this title sold so far, but still not one review!!! Have you an idea why!!? This product is a real deception: just because the cds which are supposed to be playing the role of the teacher with such books, are bin bound.

What I mean is that the pair of cds are of no help to understand the techniques taught in the book, as the passages are played by a band with different instruments and with added electrical effects.Cd2 has the same content as cd1 but in slower version.The book is a good one though, but with such a style as the Gypsy Flamenco or Flamenco itself, you need to lean on a serious guide, which the cds do not provide.

Conversations about Identity
J. Outdated
This book is terribly outdated and short on details. I would not recommend it and there are much better real estate investment books out there. I do recommend the series by robert Kiyosaki. I've actually used his techniques and they work.

very helpful book
i found this book to be very informative.....while reading i was taking notes, using yellow stickies and highlighters in 3 colors to make sure i could find certain passages in the future. i found the info on leverage,financing and acquiring deals and dealing with tenants and contractors most interesting. i'll be going thru this book again and again. it left me feeling much more confident in looking for my first deal.

Real info and not a motivational seminar ploy
What immediately sucked me into this book was the personal story of how Matt Martinez became a real estate investor.He had concern for his job security, and his drive to liberate himself from his job made him obsessed about finding the right properties. Unlike any other real estate investment book, Matt's story is personal, real, and achievable for people who have the discipline to achieve their own financial independence - sooner rather than later. Other books tend to say "I borrowed $5000 from a friend and now look at me, I'm rich!" Martinez is different. His first property required a lot of research and he financed it with an equity loan from his own house. He then leveraged the equity in his other properties over 2 years to build enough passive income to quit his job. Then when the headaches of managing the properties became too great, he sold them and acquired a larger apartment building and hired a property management firm to take care of it for him. His strategy changed from triplexes and four-unit buildings to multi-unit, multi-story apartment buildings all over the nation.

There is good technical info in here as well about methods to keep units rented, how improvements can attract higher rents, finding a property with a good cap rate, and so on. Cap rate was a term I had heard but didn't fully understand until I read it in this book (also described very completely in "What Every Real Estate Investor Needs to Know about Cashflow... by Frank Gallinelli).

I am greatly looking forward to his next book on investing in the new economy. This one was written prior to 2008. Before, it might have been easy to secure a home equity line of credit (HELOC), and then draw upon it to produce a down payment for an investment property. With just the right property even the payments on the principle + HELOC could be covered and there may still be enough for positive cash flow. How is it possible to obtain this financing today with banks now gunshy about the housing market? Martinez will evidently address this in his next book, which should be coming out shortly.

Great info and an easy read!
This book was great!It has a lot of usual information about getting started in real estate and was very easy to read and understand.Most people assume that you have to have money to make money in real estate but Matt gives a lot of useful tips on starting with little money (as he did himself).

DO NOT BUY!!!
All this book is, is a ripoff. It is a 300 pg ad for MTI software. Don't waste your money. There is nothing in this book worth your money. You can get the same info elsewhere. Beware of Forex snake oil salesman.

you get what you pay for... and sometimes you get even less than what you pay for
The title of this review is based on the fact that this book costs only $25. Now, if you hunt around enough through the forest of forex education that you can pay for you will know that $25 is practical nothing compared to what you might pay for other books and/or courses.

Speaking of courses... the author of this book sells a forex education course that carries a price tag of $8000 and while reading this book it very often struck me that this book was written as nothing more than an advertisement for his courses. Yes, this book is that vague... at best.

Take a moment and think about this... the subtitle to this book has the word "patterns" in it but yet if you look in the index at the back of the book you won't even find an entry for the word "patterns". What does that tell you?
Did I mention the word "vague"? At very best this book is vague and is a very general introduction to the box office where you buy your ticket to actually enter the forex trading arena.

Like I said, you get what you pay for and when you pay only $25 for this book that is about all the true value that you will get for your money, which pails in comparison to the vast amount of information that you can pay for and also find for free if you take the time to turn over every stone on the internet that concerns forex trading. You never know what you might find for free.

Allow me to add this. If you are coinsidering buying this book then I assume you are relatively new to forex. If this is the case, your first step should be to explore the psychological aspect of trading. Don't underestimate this suggestion. You will thank me for it. Look for a book called, "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas or an extremely deep and eye opening course offered over the Internet called 80/20 The Trader's Mindset by Chris Matthews. This course is worth so much more than you will pay for it you will be truly amazed. The bonus materials alone are worth the price of the course.

As far as nuts and bolts trading education goes, look into two products by Dean Saunders named The 10 Minute Forex Wealth Builder, or The Forex Blade Strategies.

Lastly, do not start out trying to scalp on short time frames. Scalping is the worst place to start forex trading. Start learning and trading on 4 hour and daily charts first... it is much easier and much less stressful than scalpling off short time frame charts.

I saw this book at my local book store. I read it and liked it but it was to much. I went to Amazon and bought it cheaper. Only in America you can get such a great deal. Thanks Amazon

Must reading for the financial savvy

There is a lot of selling in the book on Mr. Martinez school and products but that is good. This book is very informative and will get your interest, however as the 1 star reviewers indicate, the book does not tell you everything. The school and other educational products do.
