awesome, informative, well-researched
I read this book several years ago and was so impressed with the research, the detail, the style and the care that Tony Martin took to tell the Marcus Garvey story.

It is a wonderfully balanced look at his successes, his failures, his faith in God and most of all his impact on our nation.

I highly recommend this to history lovers of all backgrounds. You won't be disappointed.

Outstanding and Brilliantly Written
Dr. Tony Martin has provided an in-depth historical account and analysis of Marcus Garvey's heroic agitation on behalf of African people's freedom world-wide.

Dr. Martin effectively conveys a sense of the profoundmission on which Marcus Garvey launched himself and his organization, theUNIA.Garvey understood the importance of psychology as well as economicsand Dr. Martin's book describes his efforts, successful and unsuccessful,to achieve his very ambitious goals.

One major error found, trust in the rest doubtful
I approached the title wary in the light of David Richman's review.Turning first to the section on Eucalyptus the entry for Eu Camaldulensis has the wrong common name and an incorrect distribution map.

This is one of the best known and most widely distributed trees in the country.To get this wrong makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the work is.

The entries for the genus Eucalyptus are also wrongly located in the book, under Trees of Temperate America, rather than SE Asia/Australia.The raises questions about the quality of editing and proofing.

A Beautiful but Flawed Guide to Trees
I was very much prepared to like "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Trees of the World" when I first opened it.Indeed, the illustrations are very beautiful and while the reproductions are a bit small, they are very clear. I also generally like the way the pages are arranged. However the authors (Tony Russell, Catherine Cutler and Martin Walters)made several errors that in my opinion make this book less useful than it could be.First I do not like the mixing of native and exotic trees for different parts of the World.It makes me unsure as to the target audience (is this for identification or horticulture or both?) and also results in the same tree appearing more than once.The authors are inconsistent in their use of family names.It would be preferable I think to insert the Latin family name just under the common name than to mention (or often not mention it!) it in the preamble to the section.They also use old names, such as Palmae and Leguminosae in several areas, with the current Arecaceae being substituted in other parts of the book for Palmae!This inconsistent use is maddening and certainly confusing to the beginner who might think that the palms consisted of two or more families! In some cases the common names used are unusual ones or more local forms (Bull Bay is commonly called Southern Magnolia in most books- the former name is the Southeastern U.S. version.It is, however, not a true bay tree!)

I would also take exception to the section on tamarisks (pp. 434-435) in that the authors should have mentioned that, while probably suitable for Eurasia, most of these species can become pestilential weeds in other parts of the world (such as in North America).We are in fact having a very difficult time controlling several of these species around water courses.

All in all I think the authors missed a great opportunity to produce a really great reference book. With some editing and the reduction of the repetition of descriptions more tree species could have been covered in the same space.Why not a list of exotic trees for horticulture at the end of each section?This could refer to the particular description in the section for the geographical origin of the tree, rather than have, for example, Bull Bay or Breadfruit appear several times?

This could be a very useful reference book, but it only frustrated me.Perhaps somebody will publish a better reference in the future.The idea of a reasonably complete world-wide guide to trees certainly has merit, but unfortunately this book is not it, despite its lavish production. ... Read more

Great book.

As a special educator I appreciate the comprehensive connections made in this book. So many of our students have a "mix" of challenges and cannot be categorized in just one way. Very helpful analysis.

Finally, a book that makes sense of my child!
This is a book that I will treasure and that I will refer to time and time again in the future. My son has a rare form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. He IS one of these kids in the syndrome mix. Children with Dravet syndrome have many similar "characteristics", syndromes.This book helps me, as a parent, begin to make sense of all of these different syndromes.However, the most important aspect of this book, for me, is the advice on how to modify/deal with these "weird" characteristics of my son, how to "parent" and "change" these behaviors, how to properly "react."Screaming, yelling, berating, do not work, this book gives advice on what will work.

I appreciate that this book is written in easy to understand language, especially when I am so overwhelmed by all the information bombarding me constantly as I seek to understand my child and his condition.

I highly recommend this book to any parent of a special needs child, and then I would strongly recommend that those in the school system who work with this child also read this great little book.

A most helpful book for lost parents!
My daughter's therapist recommended this book after we had been through several diagnoses and medications-each drug only worsened the situation and made my daughter's behavior more unbearable. Our wonderful therapist held off on a diagnosis and medication until she had spent many hours with each of us and had me read this book. Plain and simple terms- easy to read- most helpful! Helps you understand that your child may indeed fall into several categories at once and not be easily diagnosable.

Syndrome Kids
I highly recommend this book.I found it full of information on all subjects of mental illness. This book offered me an understanding of the many different types of mental illness.It is well written and easy to comprehend. It truly is a one stop guide. There is a great section on medication and treatment.I like how the authors explain the each illness and give advice. I keep it as a reference when I an trying to understand my childs behavior. He is truly in the syndrome mix.

A Joy
This really is a delight to read from beginning to end. What a relief to read an autobiog that is not full of insincere self deprecation or thinly veiled boasting. Martin manages to tell personal stories that do not centre on himself, but instead makes a feature of the often hilarious and frequently bizarre characters he has met over the years. Let there be no mistake....Tony Martin is a very, very funny guy and an intelligent one too, as was made clear during the Get This golden years. His book is wonderful and I highly recommend it. When thinking about the other FM radio jocks that grace the airwaves at the moment, and what kind of mess they would make if they attempted to write anything, I cant help thinking that the 'ponytails' in the industry are hilarious in their ignorance. Nothing more threatening than 'talent' with actual talent.

16 Moments from Tony Martin's Past for All of Us to Enjoy!
This is not an autobiography, it isn't a behind the scenes look at Tony Martin's childhood to current life or an account of the struggles and triumphs of how he became a radio/TV personality. In fact the whole famous and TV/radio side of Tony Martin is not mentioned at all. The Yeti- Another tale of an eccentric landlord where Danny is renting a room from a Swiss-German bald man named Gunter.This time has two other boarders as well as the landlord to share the experience, including a guy who is stockpiling silver paper you find in blocks of chocolate for his own unique project.

Breakfast in Dubbo - Tony takes an interstate bus trip and is pleased to have two seats to himself, until a racist old lady sits beside him to let her husband sleep.In between her rants about New Zealanders all being unemployed dole bludgers she mentions that these buses always have a movie.A young Tony has never experienced the magic of bus movies before, not even realising this was even possible so becomes excited and eager to find out what will be showing.The bus driver knows of the fights that start if passengers have time to discuss the selection before it's time to play so won't even give Tony a hint.Tony wants his first bus movie to be great and will do whatever it takes to make that dream come true.

Unlucky 12a - Tony moves into an apartment complex where, Norma a nosy old busybody expects everyone to follow the body corporate rules to the letter.Tony likes to throw breadcrumbs out the window for the pigeons and she labels him for this breach without explaining what he does, a snowdropper to all the other residents in her newsletter.Of course a snowdropper is a slang term for one who steals women's underpants off of clotheslines. With Norma circulating air horns a few days earlier so the residents hearing one go off, will come running and lynch a man who she claims pleasures himself naked in the laundry room at night (a time when if he needs to do the laundry Tony chooses to do his) Tony wonders if he will survive the months before his girlfriend arrives from interstate.

Prang - A man crashes into Tony's Honda Civic and blames Tony for the accident claiming he had no lights on. When his girlfriend backs him up the man exchanges insurance information.Later Tony finds out this information was fake but luckily his girlfriend wrote down the licence plate number. So Tony at his girlfriend's insistence sets off to ambush the guy at his residence and get him to pay for the damage.

The Doctor is Out - Tony has a constant back problem and after going to chiropractor after chiropractor decides to try something different, with a doctor who uses a technique new from the USA.

The Notary Public - Tony must get fifteen signatures on a document for a legal matter to do with proving he is the author of a piece of work.A notary public must sign as a witness to Tony's signature each time.At a $560 dollars a signature, Tony isn't impressed when they go to his house and find an old man who is not even making an effort to not appear as an old retired man.When Tony almost gets caught mucking around with an antique gun he took from the wall his wife and himself must come up with a plan so as to be able to put it back without the notary public noticing.

Any Old Iron - Tony is shocked to discover he has a rare disorder called Haemochromatosis, well it's actually not that rare, it's more common than most well known disorders but no one who doesn't have it seems to have ever heard of it.Tony has too much iron in his blood where if 8 syringe full portions of his blood aren't removed every couple of months he will die. Tony has the highest iron count the doctor has ever seen.The irony of it is, Tony has being taking Iron tablets as those companies marketing campaigns have been telling him everyone needs more iron.Unfortunately for Tony who expects to only have to undergo the painful procedure a couple of times a year, the doctor keeps getting his results and telling him I'm sorry you'll have to come back in a couple of weeks and get another eight withdrawals again to empty out the high iron blood.

Donkey Shines - As Tony's wife hands him the controls of his brand new Nintendo64 Tony recounts the different generations of his life so far and how video games have played a major part.From first witnessing Tron on Star Trek and thinking there's no way that's real to his home town getting a Space Invaders machine at the local fish and chip chop.

In the Eye of the Lolly Scramble - Tony recounts how his mother and stepfather got into huge arguments over disciplining the children who weren't biologically theirs as Tony and his step siblings stood out in the street so the neighbours would know they weren't in danger and call the cops.As Tony goes to the town shopping centre with his mother hating the false image the Brady Bunch was giving to step families he wonders off and come across a queue to sit on Santa's lap.Cynical about the whole happy family image at Christmas he is not interested in participating.Neither it seems is Santa whose would have been funny to be there and witness actions, give this book its title.

Great songbook!
As promised, an endless font of entertainment. Steve Martin is our banjo daddy! Love it!!! Get the CD too!!!!!

Basic tablature for the intermediate player
However, more time could have been spent TOTALLY tabbing out the tunes. I was somewhat dissappointed, when on attempting to play the LEAD song, 'Daddy played the banjo'. It was more 'backup', having left out the entire Main break. So, folks, don't expect a detail tab layout. just basic stuff. Tony Trischka is a great talent, he could have done better on the tabs. Buy the CD because its one of the best bluegrass and clawhammer assemblage for 2009.

Steve Martin on Banjo is great
I've always enjoyed Steve Martin's banjo playing and now on this album, you get a great variety of good banjo music.

Worth the money!
I ordered this book for my son and I since we both play and we were very pleased with the ease of how the songs are laid out.If you love this album and want to learn how to play the songs look no further!Quick ship too!

A Totally Addictive CD!
I have a new respect for Steve Martin as a musician. He's just amazing. There isn't a boring track on this CD and it is "truly wonderful" but even better than advertised. I am learning clawhammer banjo and was very impressed that he has attained mastery of both three finger and clawhammer styles. His compositions are highly inventive and don't sound like regurgitated reworkings of old pieces. The CD is very well orchestrated, and some sections (for example "The Crow") are reminiscent of Aaron Copland's magical ability to capture the concept of arid spaciousnees with music.

I luckly discovered the CD by listening to files on Banjo Newsletter's website and previewed "The Crow" there. If you like banjo, whether bluegrass or clawhammer, do yourself a favor: buy this CD! If you play, certainly don't pass up the opportunity to get the tablature along with it. ... Read more

Good classroom in a book for newcomers
This is a surprisingly useful book for newcomers to Visual Basic.NET. Buy it for the book, itself, not for the online presentation.

The book comes with an accompanying website with audio/visual presentation for each chapter consisting of a PowerPoint presentation along with audio. Warning: You can only view the presentation with a high speed broadband connection. Dial-up can only get the audio and sometimes not even the audio. The online presentations are fine, but the value comes from the book itself, not the online presentation.

I usually shy away from books with phrases like "In a weekend", "in 24 hours", "hour-a-day crash course" etc. You really can't learn a new programming language in a few hours.HOWEVER, THESE BOOKS ARE AN EXCEPTION. The authors don't try to convince you that you can expect to learn VB.NET in a weekend.If you do all the lessons (some of which may take a bit more than an hour) plus try to do a few original applications on your own, from scratch, you WILL get a very good foundation of the subjects being taught. It will take about 4 - 6 weeks to go through the entire book (not 24 hours or a weekend, like other books promise), based on 60 - 90 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week.

I own both the VB.NET and the ASP.NET (which is also VB.NET based) books and recommended them to my students who wanted to learn VB.NET.

This books is designed for people who don't have the money or the time to attend a live, in-class course on the VB.NET.The authors anticipate, in advance, some of the questions you might ask to a live instructor if you were learning VB.NET in a classroom environment.According to the authors, they have taken their own experience as instructors and put that experience into the book.It works pretty well.

Two caveats:

(1) the book doesn't cover everything about .NET or about VB.NET or about the .NET Framework. It's provides a self-study, introductory course on VB.NET. If you complete the book, then you will be in good shape to take on some more advanced topics such as the details of ADO.NET (an entire subject in itself, check out Murach Publisher's Murach's VB.NET Database Programming with ADO.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince - ISBN: 1890774197 for that) and ASP.NET (check out Wiley Publisher's ASP.NET in 60 Minutes a Day by Glenn Johnson, ISBN: 0-471-43023-4 for that or Mike Murach Publisher's Murach's ASP.NET Web Programming with VB.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince ISBN: 1890774200 for that).

(2) The online presentations are only available to broadband subscribers. However, even without the videos, this would be a great introductory book for beginners who cannot take a classroom course on Web development using VB.NET and ASP.NET.

An excellent book let down by poor support
Visual Basic.Net in 60 Minutes reads well from the beginning. The tutorial-style presentation is an excellent idea, with each chapter supported by an introductory streaming video presentation by Bruce Barstow, hosted on Wiley's web site. The only problem is that the video intros don't work after chapter 3 which is a real let-down. Wiley's "Technical Support" has, as yet, produced no response, despite repeated emails plus a not inexpensive international phone call to have this issue rectified.

In summary, an excellent read for a programmer with some VB experience moving across to this VERY different world of VB.NET, but will disappoint anyone intending to use the advertised on-line lectures until (if/when??) Wiley get their act together & get these videos working beyond chapter 3! ... Read more

GOOD BACKGROUND, EXAMPLES TOO SIMPLISTIC
This book provides good background information on COM, DCOM and ADO, butthere is little that can't be found elsewhere. Too much time is spent oncovering ADO. The examples are too simplistic to be useful. This book is agood place to start, but it doesn't take you very far.

Excellent book for starting at component programming
If you are a VB programmer but not a COM programmer I think this is an excellent book to start COM study. You can have a good knowledge of a complex technology only with the first 7 chapters.

The Best for Newbies
If you are new to all the new technologies out there from Microsoft. This is the best book to explain it all. I do agree with the previous reviewer, this is not an advanced book and I would recommend Ted's book if you are advanced or have mastered the basics. IF you have not mastered the basicthen you will be lost in Ted's book. So, in my opinion this book is thebest on the market for entry to intermediate level developers starting withCOM.

Good book, but authors did not have target audience defined
I think it is important to have some info about reviewer himself/herself in order to evaluate review properly. So, a few words about myself. I have been programming VB for 4 years, building distributed apps with COM/MTS for1 year.

This book did not add much to what I already knew. It tries tocover conseptual/architectural issues as well as "real-life"programming issues. But there is a clear gap between the level at whichthese are covered. The language and style of conseptual coverage is quitedence and complex and probably assumes some experience inarchitecture/design areas, whereas the language and examples of programmingcoverage is over-simplistic, as if meant for people that are new to VB (notjust to MTS).That is why I said that auhtors probably did not have theirtarget audience clearly defined.

I think this book is more useful formanagers that want to stay current with overall design trends andterminology than for practical programmers.

Authors often refer to theirbook as a "wihrlwind tour" on developing distributed apps. Andthat's really what this book is.

I found the chapters that coverarchitectural issues most usefull. The rest of information was probablyintended for people with less experience in COM/MTS programming.

If youwant a more thorough overview of COM/MTS (within the boundaries of VB) withmore accent on programming side, I would recommend Ted Pattison's"Programming Distributed Applications with COM and Visual Basic6".

P.S. Unfortunately this book was not free from some errors. Forinstance, on page 129 authors ask you to open some sample project andimmediately proceed to Properties and set Binary Compatibility, WITHOUTsaying that you should compile DLL first and specify this DLL file as areference point. Not a big deal, but the error message VB provides is notthe most descriptive one and for someone with lack of experience this canbe quite a nuissance.

The best for MTS beginners
If you consider hiring someone to explain to you what COM, MTS, N-tier app or something alike, consider buying this book first.It does not only dedicate the first few chapters to show the big picture, the theory ofn-tier development and components, it also provides good examples (w/important tips and clear explanations) to complete your knowledge withexperience/practice.

The only drawback I've seen so far is that theauthor missed highlighting the important code section like:GetObjectContext() in the every first example of how to create the firstMTS component.Well, the good thing is that you won't want to miss anyparts of this book and like to read every written line anyway.If you haveintention to learn MTS, this book is definitely the start, and it won't letyou down.

There are many other MTS books out there too, but I thinkwithout this one, others are either too advanced or do not cover thefoundation good enough.Start with this first!
