4-0 out of 5 stars Good movie except for.....
I enjoyed the movie when it was first on TV. So I was excited to be able to have the DVD. However while the package states that there are English subtitles avail, this is not the case. The subtitles listed are Spanish, French and none.I am disappointed with the product for this reason only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good lower budget film.
I thought the Jenson Project was fairly entertaining. It had some pretty good special effects, action, and drama.
Sure it's not a big budget film, but it doesn't have to be in order to be interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cliche City
You get lazy as a writer and you resurrect every cliche you can find and a few really long dead ones and you write a movie script and you call it The Jensen Project. ... Read more

Christy Huddleston left home at 19 to teach school in the Smokey Mountains. There she came to know and love the wild mountain people with their fierce pride, their dark superstitions, their terrible poverty, their yearning for beauty and truth. Christy found her faith severely challenged in these primitive surroundings; and, confronted with two young men of unique strength and needs, she found her own growing yearnings challenged by love.

5-0 out of 5 stars I always loved this book (spoiler warning)
If you don't know much about it, it is easy to think this book is saccharine or "inspirational" to a fault but in fact I find it very realistic.Christy, based on the author's (Catherine Marshall) mother, goes into the remote Appalachians in Tennessee to teach children there, and help people grow in Christian faith.I am not religious myself but I don't think you have to be to understand how idealistic a young person can be when she decides she wants to help others. She goes there and is met by horrible poverty, physical and sexual violence, alcoholism, and feuding. In addition the conditions are so bad she has serious illness to contend with - essentially epidemics.

But this book is far from just being grim b/c she learns to care for the people there and (most of them) start to care about her.She has some creative ideas about raising money for the school. Some of them work better than others. She gets into a little bit of trouble with the wise Quaker woman, Miss Alice, for some of the things she does. But she's able to get school supplies and etc. out of basically nothing.

She makes friends with a young woman called Fairlight who although worked very hard by the demands of family, has the ability to stop working and look out at the sunset every so often.Fairlight says the work will always be there, which is true.

Some of this book is written in dialect but that does not come across as disrespectful to me.

The people tend to use music to express different emotions, from sadness to joy, and Christy learns to appreciate that.

......spoiler warning...........

.......OK, I warned you.......

Some people are confused about why Christy seems like she will end up with the doctor rather than the preacher. In real life, Catherine Marshall's mother married the preacher. An anniversary edition explained this. The doctor was a fictional character based on Catherine Marshall's husband Peter, who was Scottish like the doctor, and her other experiences with meeting Scottish men.Marshall was always careful to say this book was fiction, though it had some basis in fact due to her hearing about her mother's stories.

......spoiler warning, number 2.........

There is a beautiful description of a near-death experience.I don't know that I believe in life after death but there is a crisis, a near-death experience (apparently), and then a sort of coming back to life.I phrased that really vaguely to keep the spoiler as vague as possible.

A lot of people in general, including teachers, would have a hard time going to a place where there was so much need and so many awful problems.Once the initial idealism faded, they might quit. That doesn't happen with Christy and the reasons why not are interesting. For this reason I really like the book although my views are not like the author's in many ways.I also think it's a good story.

The TV series may have given the idea that Christy was kind of naive and didn't see a whole lot of suffering and evil - I can't say I really watched much of it but from what I heard it seemed like it was "inspirational" which can often sanitize life to some degree.I didn't find this book to be like that, though.I think it's a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite
I rarely re-read a book, but have re-read Christy several times. Catherine Marshall's writing brings the reader face to face with the mountain people, to enjoy the dialect and the culture as part of the community.

A thoroughly pleasurable read from cover to cover.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Theology - 2.5 Stars
Quoting of the Mass Paperback print:
Page 70: "You see, the religious background of the mountain people is mostly the strict Calvinism of their Scotch-Irish forefathers. It has merits. Breeds Steel in folks. Better than a wishy-washy religion that really has not convictions at all. But it's bequeathed to these people a lot of heart scalds. You'll see for yourself. Their Christianity is one of fear, of taboos - you can't do this and you mustn't do that. If you do, you'll go to hell."
Page 102:(describes a "nine year old who was beaten over and over by her mother's lover, day after day, then finally brutally raped by the same man. The child died the next day." And describes "a woman strung up fro the rafters - swinging - dead. Her imbecile husband was there gaping at the body. He was the murderer. When I asked him why he had done it, his only explanation was `A woman that can't stand hangin' a few hours ain't no woman a-tall.'
Page 102-103: after being asked about God's will with those terrible things above the writer says "He would have to, if He'd given us men and women a genuine freedom of choice." Miss Alice voice was gentle. "I think it's like this...The Creator made the world a cooperative enterprise. In order for it to be that way, God had to give us the privilege of going His way of of refusing to go His way." "But how? How do we go His way?""He's specific about that". She ticked the points off on her fingers: " `Love ye your enemies', 'Do good', 'Be ye therefore merciful', 'Judge not', 'Forgive', And best of all, `Give, and it shall be given unto you' good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over shall men give into your bosom.' A great promise to claim!"
. . . . "perhaps it will help to explain: God has all kinds of riches for all of us. Not just spiritual riches either. His promises in the Bible are His way of telling us what's available. But this plenty doesn't become ours until we drive in our stake on a particular promise and thus indicate that e accept that gift.

This Arminian writer is obviously very confused as to what Calvinism is. It wouldn't be so bad if she kept it to herself, but she is spreading to millions of readers that Calvinists are legalists and murderers and even "imbeciles". I mean who understands Grace better than Calvinists? And in her explanation as to how to "claim" God's gifts to us she doesn't even say anything about Jesus - but instead she goes off onto doing works....
Her writing ability is excellent and the book would truly be a great read if it wasn't overshadowed by this horrific dark cloud of bad-bad theology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christy
AS always ,I enjoy the books written by Catherine Marshall.
This is an interesting account of life in the East Tennessee mountains
as life was back in this time period.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNSELFISH LOVE WINS OVER HATE
Christy, by Catherine Marshall is a keeper and a reread! I can't wait to get the entire series! Catherine Marshall is a consummate writer. This is a can't-put-down book which definitely helped me in my Christian journey.

The story takes place in the early 1900s, featuring a 19 year old pampered city girl whose heart is deeply stirred by a visiting missionary. His appeal for a volunteers to go to the Great Smoky Mountain region of Tennesee to help the impoverished people there does not go unheeded. Much to her parents' consternation, Christy answers the call.

As soon as she arrives, the reader begins to see what this young woman is made of. Since the snows of mid-winter make transportation impossible, she begs the local postal carrier to allow her to accompany him to Cutter Gap, her destination. With voluminous long skirts and dainty shoes, she bravely trudges the seven miles through the snow to the mission.

Her many adventures introduce her to the raw aspects of life on the frontier, and in the process she grows spiritually, learns from the simple folk she ministers to as the teacher in the one room school.

Live her life with her as she changes her concepts of God and what true, loving service to all types of people, dangerous or gentle, lived out means. Marvel at the patient wisdom and spiritual insights of Miss Alice, as well as, the compassion and patience of Dr. Neil MacNeill. Tremble through the tragedies of the life-taking typhoid epidemic, and breathe a sigh of relief and delight at true love found.

And lastly, don't miss the deep spiritual insights that run like a gossamer thread through the entire book.

Excerpt: Kellie's Castle (sometimes also called Kellie's Folly) is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20 minutes' drive from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son. William Kellie Smith was from a village in Scotland known as Kellas. In 1890, at the age of 20, he arrived in the then undeveloped Malaya. Here, he met an estate owner called Alma Baker, who had won concessions from the state government to clear 360 hectares of forests in Perak. With the substantial profits made from his business venture with Alma Baker, Smith started planting rubber trees and dabbled in the tin mining industry. In time, he became the owner of Kinta Kellas Estate and the Kinta Kellas Tin Dredging Company. Now with his fortune made, he returned home to marry his Scottish sweetheart, Agnes, and brought her over to Malaysia in 1903. The following year, the couple was blessed with a daughter whom they named Helen. For many years after that, Agnes tried to conceive, but to no avail. William Smith desperately wanted a son and heir to take over his empire in the Malay Isles. After many years, Agnes finally gave birth to a son, Anthony, in 1915. The birth of his child was the start of even greater success for William Smith. To celebrate Anthony's birth, William Smith decided to expand on his mansion. Smith started planning for a huge castle which he planned to call Kellas House, after his hometown in Scotland. As stated earlier, Kellie wanted a son very badly. One of the Madras laborers told him that by praying to Amman (a Hin...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2134482 ... Read more

Product Description
Throughout her teaching career, Kellie Stenzel has been continually asked to recommend a beginning golf instruction book for her female students to read. She researched the market and found nothing suitable—most books are too technical for the beginner and assume that the reader already has some familiarity with the game. This became the inspiration for The Women’s Guide to Golf, a well-crafted and easy-to-understand golf instructional for women who are new to the game.

Each section of the book provides a complete explanation of the skills needed to play golf.Ideas are presented in a clear and simple manner—golf lingo is translated into every-day English whenever possible so the reader can easily understand.Since students must have an idea of what they are trying to accomplish before they can learn, Kellie Stenzel starts at the very beginning and gives detailed explanations of basic concepts. For example, she explains what a putter looks like, what a putting green looks like, and what the goal of putting is, before teaching the reader how to putt.In addition, since women’s learning style is very different from men’s, this book also addresses specific women’s issues, such as posture and lack of distance.

This book includes

- a thorough explanation of the game
- easy-to-understand instructions
- suggestions on how to avoid embarrassment as a beginner
- simple ways to remember what you’ve read
- great anecdotes from the author’s experiences as a golfer and a teacher
- over 75 black-and-white photos

The Women’s Guide to Golf is one of the most accessible and comprehensive golf instructionals ever written for women—it is the perfect book for any woman who wants to learn the game.
Amazon.com Review
Kellie Stenzel Garvin, a PGA and LPGA class-A teaching professional, has been golfing since she was 3 years old. In her book, The Women's Guide to Golf, she attempts to teach the woman golfer who has not. Assuming the reader has no prior knowledge of the game, she explains everything. The chapters are set up as lessons, the first ones covering the course, the ball, the hole, and the equipment. The simplicity of these first lessons may seem a little insulting--after all, a beginning golfer is not the same as a beginning reader. But when she discusses grip in lesson 5, pay attention--that's when Stenzel Garvin starts to shine. With the aid of 75 black-and-white photos, she takes the novice golfer through the basic points of putting and the short game before moving on to the full swing. Two of the most valuable lessons aimed at helping the beginner avoid the pitfalls that would make her stand out: step-by-step instructions for going to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls and playing a round of golf. "Fake it 'til you make it" is her mantra. Left-handed golfers be warned, this book is written strictly from a right-handed perspective, so all instructions will have to be translated. --Suzanne Sexton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for a beginner
Originally got this book from the library, so I had to take if back, but decided I liked it so well I bought it online. Now I can revert back to it any time I need it. I've never played golf, and at 48 yrs old I've decided to try it. At this time in my life I am unable to afford to take lessons. So my husband and I go and just have fun. This book realy helps with some of the problems I've come up against.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner
I bought this book because I know absolutely nothing about golf and upon reading this I now have some knowledge, I appreciate that even though I ordered it on Labor Day weekend I still received it in a very timely fashion thanks maybe by spring I will be able to golf with my brothers and not look foolish.

Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

I learned so much from this book. The author really knows her golf and how to teach it simply. The pictures help a lot in understanding the technique to better golf.I have improved my scores by at least 5 strokes since studying her concepts. It sure make golf a lot more fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great golf reference for women
I continue going back to this book for review when I find my game getting a little "off".It has great recommendations for improvement, really good photos showing various swings and is quite easy to read.A lot of my golf books are read and then re-sold.This one is a keeper.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible service; Never did deliver book
A few days after ordering the book received an email that it had shipped.Weeks passed, no book.Wrote to seller who pointed out that he did not have to respond until about a month had passed.More time passed.Complained no book.Seller again stated he had shipped. No book.Complained again. Seller admitted a mistake, book never shipped.Seller said he had book in stock, asked what action was required to make right.Told him to ship book immediately and expeditiously.Seller responded he did not have to send in expeditious manner.Seller unilaterally canceled order. After a couple months of email exchanges and notices that shipment had taken place I ended up with no book.Seller was not customer-friendly or cooperative.Would not order again from "Michael Rubin" or "please-buy-mine" because they accept orders but do not always execute them, and are not helpful to remedy problems of their making.Would have given zero stars if I could have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips
Very good book with excellent easily understood practical tips you can use.
I've already improved my game dramatically just following some of her practice suggestions. She also explains the "why" (choosing the right club, practice techniques) that allow me to better understand.
