5-0 out of 5 stars a summer in the country . . .
Oooh, what a deliciously rompish sting! Written with an ever-present and wonderful sense of wit, the two main characters, Jesmond Fitzroy and Mrs. Georgina Herron (a widow) strike silvery sparks off each other from their very first meeting. She is in a lad's togs and of course, that's what he thinks she is. No way. He has a hidden story in his life, as well, and it plays out against the normal Regency life of a small village.

Jess has inherited Jesmond House from an elderly aunt, and although he'd visited as a youngster, it's all so different now that it's his. Much of the acreage surrounding the house has been sold to pay overdue accounts. To his surprise, Jess discovers that all too many of the villagers have been forced into the same sort of situation, only to be rescued at the last moment (and for very low prices) by the village banker, Mr. Bowlby.

Mrs. Georgie, on the other hand, does not own land or house in Netherton, but has come to stay with her widowed sister-in-law, Caro Pomfret, whose husband had been Georgie's brother. Caro has gone into a decline following the death of her husband John, leaving her twin children Gus and Annie at very loose ends. Now nearing ten years of age, they thrive on Georgie's attentiveness.

This is not the sort of book one can read while doing other things; it requires your complete attention in order not to miss any of the delicious by-plays between the various characters. The secondary characters are very well-drawn, and many of them beg for their own book at some time in the future. There is so much plot that I'm not sure it could be adequately summarized in the word count allotted here for reviews. Nevertheless, I'd happily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a rip-roaring story set in any time period, especially when there's a delightful romance mixed in with it. Georgie is a heroine for all times, and Jess is very much her equal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Regency
This is one Paula Marshall I much enjoyed.

Set mainly in the country, very much an understated hero, and an interesting heroine.Probably my favourite character was Tozzy a Bermondsey bruiser employed by Jess Fitzroyfor his specialised talents. The book describes some of the social issuesand concerns in the country at the time.Spending more time on financialmatters than is often customary in a Regency.

From the back of theMills&Boon paperback:

UNCOVERING SECRETS

Inspecting the propertyrecently inherited from his great-aunt, Jess Fitzroy found a youth and twochildren playing cricket in his grounds. The `youth' was a woman, but, inbehaving like a stern papa, he infuriated the widowed Mrs Georgina Herronbefore he and Georgie came to terms. Even so, Jess didn't think of Georgieas a suitable parti, until he learned the truth behind the facade she - andothers! - presented to the world...

A Regency delight! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
Just what I was looking for.She shows a family how to cull out and keep what you love and make it look nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
I found this book in the library and am now about to buy it.If you want to create a home that is a reflection of who you are, this book will be a wonderful asset.Lynnette is very helpful in determining your own
personal style, but you're going to have to put in a little thought. She also helps you to build the confidence to do it.However, it's not for everyone. For some the best thing to do is just to bite the bullet and hire a decorator.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great READ11
Grab a cup of coffe & relaxc as you read this book. It is very informative & will help you implement your own style.It is as good ,if not better than her first book. I can only assume the bad reviews are from people who just looked at the pictures. I don't think you will be dissapointed with it but actually reading it would help! Thanks;

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight Compromise Needed
This book initially threw me off. It is so different than most decorating books I have. You know the ones; you flip through the pages and find gorgeous rooms and decor. You don't have to read a word to get the gist of the decorating style and decide which components you love and want to imitate.

This book is different. I have never heard of this decorator, nor have I read or seen any of her other books. This is one you definitely have to read, but the text is in such big type that it does not seem daunting. I'm sure the big text helps to fill up pages, BUT I thought it was great for making the reading easy.

Now I would say the first half of the book is talking, teaching and some of it is kind of new-agey, get in touch with your home's feelings kind of talk which makes me grin...but that's okay. I like a little humor in my life! For those who think I am kidding, page 65, starts with "Learn How Your House Wants to Live." I want to learn how I really want to live in MY house! LOL

It does have good information and kind of gets you thinking in a different way. I like how the author recommends you categorize your furniture and accessories into Love It, So-So or Leave It.It does explain that her "Leave It" category means it is out unless you will end up with a naked room, sleeping on the floor or eating on the kitchen counter. So some "Leave It's" will have to wait to go out the door. Her recommendation is to make it tolerable by covering with a favorite tablecloth or with the most beautiful bed linens you can afford. I would give it a 3.5 star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
As a complete decorating neophyte, who, when I've needed to decorate, have always looked outside, to others, to magazines, etc., this is exactly the book I needed. Jennings has given me the confidence to go with what I like, what suits me, and what makes me feel comfortable. Then she goes into structured detail showing me how to recognize my own style. To the decorating mavens out there -note that there are so many of us who listen far too often to others' advice to the detriment of our own style and comfort. Although this book has a "self-help" feel about it, the title clearly states what this book is about- Confidence in one's preferences and choices and how to go with them. Its focus is not color schemes and style as much as it's about finding the confidence in your own self to decorate how you want, regardless of whatever anyone else may think. Thanks Lynette! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Glorified Magazine Article
I didn't find this "book" all that helpful. It's more like a high-level overview of security and common practices. I didn't really find any nuggest of wisdom or neat tricks or even recommendataions really.

It's like a fancy "about home security" pamphlet and not really worth the money or shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way for *anyone* to start improving their security
I confess: I am carpentry impaired. But when I thumbed through this book and then read it thoroughly, I was impressed by the fact that many of the techniques in it are easy and require minimal tools, supplies and skills. "Home Security" also has very good color illustrations (and some photos) that show you exactly what the text is saying. As a visual learner, I appreciated that very much!

The real gold in this guide, however, is the sheer wealth of information. For instance, I personally didn't know one lock from another (other than a deadbolt is better), and "Home Security" has a whole page full of illustrations with pros and cons of each type of lock and where they are best suited for in your home. It gets down to details such as shape of the lock's bolt, and how far into the doorjam it should go. "Home Security" also answered the simple question of which way should the door swing --in or out -- to provide the best security. (It's in.)

This book is a great way to get you started. The information is basic and shows you in which direction to go, and how to think about the most common ways thieves get in and take things. In fact, I am in the research stages of building my own house, and for others like me, this will prove invaluable, because we can build the security in as we go along instead of doing a "quick fix" to badly secured features later.

Subjects covered by the book, in no particular order, are:

Do a home inventory and a "security tour" to determine what you have and the weak spots in the home
Childproofing
Insurance
Alarm systems -- the biggest single section of the book
Securing windows and doors all over the home, including basement
Locks
Fences and lighting
Fire safety, including types fire extinguishers and smoke detectors
Apartment and condo dwellers
Securing special targets (guns, jewelry)
How to convert a regular closet to a security closet
How to get into the habit of security
Vacation security
Security when you are at home
Some thoughts on handicapped-accessible home design

4-0 out of 5 stars Basics
this is the pure basics... they cover everything... doors, windows, BACEMENTs... from locks to clocks and electronics its in here... a very good book... not like the USSR is invading secure but most of you arnt like me... when i liberary got this book (if anyone wants to buy it for me thats cool thanks LOL) i fliped after i read it... it was soooo good... i learned sooo much about my house that i had never thought of.. great book... not the best but all of the basics ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not my style
I was not impressed with this book. I suppose I should have just gone to the store so that I could have glanced through it before I purchased it. While there were ideas for small houses, they were very specific to the style of the house. (modern, traditional, eclectic, etc.) So, if you have a house that fits the architectural style, maybe this would be a good book to get. I felt that while the pictures were nice, and it was interesting to see what people do with their space, this did not give me any usable ideas for my own 1500 sq. ft. home. (or anyone in my neighborhood really) I am sure that people around the nation share some of the architecture of these houses, but not many. There is one house that is built in San Diego County that sits on a triangle-shaped piece of land. The architect designed the house specifically for that space. I am not sure this idea would help anyone unless they had a triangular piece of property. So, if I was anyone looking at this book to purchase, purchase it used, or check it out at the library, or go look at it at the store first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big ideas in small packages
Bigger is not always better. It's refreshing to find little houses that live big while embodying style and comfort. This book has aged well.My first copy got water damaged, but my design library just wasn't complete without it, so I reordered.

Good thing. All these years later, many of the interiors still feel fresh.Even if the furnishings or wainscotting in the cottages seem dated to you (I think they seem classic in context), the floor plans and basic ideas are good.

It's particularly fun to see creative solutions for storage challenges. But, the absolute best reason to buy this book are the teeny, tiny closet-sized houses on handkerchief sized lots. Must see to believe. Brilliant!

2-0 out of 5 stars check it out at the library first
I THOUGHT SOME OF THE ROOMS LOOKED NICE, BUT THE BOOK BASICLY SHOWED YOU WHAT THEY COULD DO WITH A ROOM, NOT REALLY ANY GREAT IDEAS FOR YOU TO TRY ON YOUR OWN. I GUESS I WAS LOOKING FOR A HOW TO BOOK AND THIS WAS NOT IT.SOME OF THE IDEAS LOOKED EXPENSIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvellous
What a fantastic book....if you live in a small house as I do..1450 sq ft...you need to read this book.Paula so gracefully...& consistently encourages us throughout her book that small is beautiful...& you CAN have the gorgeous well decorated house you crave without letting size get in the way.Her creative ideas are astounding backed by multitudes of small house make-overs brimming with inspiration that's actually useful to those of us who are not rich..yet would like to have the nicest furnishings we can afford. She starts the book off with the premise that we need to STOP dreaming of a bigger house...& start getting bigger inspirations...which is exactly what this book accomplishes so successfully.I no longer long for a bigger house...& I'm in the process now.. of making my small house ...beautiful in every way.Hats off to you Paula for a job well done...wish more decorating books were as grass roots as yours...& delivered what they promise as yours does.
