Editorial Review Product Description Bill Maher's popular new HBO television show, RealTime, has put Maher more front and center than ever before. Particularly one regular segmenton the show, entitled "New Rules," has been a hit with his ever-growing legion of fans. It is thepart of the show during which Maher takes serious aim, bringing all of his intelligence, incisiveness, wit, and his signature exasperation to bear on topics ranging from cell phones ("Idon't need my cell phone to take pictures or access the Internet. I just need it to make a phonecall. From everywhere! Not just the places it likes!") to fast food ("No McDonald's in hospitals.I'm not kidding!) to the conservative agenda ("Stop claiming it's an agenda. It's not an agenda. It's a random collection of laws that your corporate donors paid you to pass.") Hisnew book, the first since his bestselling When You Ride Alone You Ride with bin Laden, brings these brilliantly conceived riffs and rants to the written page. Appropriately titledNew Rules, the book will collect some of the best of the rules derived from previouslywritten material and will also contain substantial new material, including some longer form"editorials"--of course with a twist and bite that only Bill Maher can deliver. In New Rules: Polite Musings of a Timid Observer, Bill Maher skewers celebrity, pop culture, and politics in his classic acerbic style. With a new season of Real Time with Bill Maher and an upcoming HBO Special (his sixth), Bill Maher: I'm Swiss, on deck, Maher also found the time to host Amazon.com's 10th Anniversary Concert at Seattle's Benaroya Hall. Amazon.com caught up with Maher upon his return to Los Angeles to talk about the book, the comic's night-table reading habits, the Internet, and what's wrong with the media. New Rule: Bill Maher needs to zip it!
VERY, VERY, VERY funny & BRILLIANT satire

Leave This One In the Bathroom
New Rule: This is required reading
This book was extremly hippocritical. He doesn't like racism but feels free to bash southern people and call them ignorant and beneath him and insults their dignity and intellegence. Racism and classicism is on the same level to me. Bill Probably has never even been in a southern state or he wouldn't say such things on good ground. He is also foul mouthed throughout the book to the point of offensive and pointless. I don't share his white guilt either. Also if he thinks the Bible needs a warning label, he should read it first AND use the scripture in context to be funny, otherwise 'backtalking' to God in his book is pointless and mildly ridicoulous if he isn't using the material correctly. Also his pro pot standing is absurb. Another liar about how harmless pot is. I think Bill Maher needs to sober up and get up to date with his material especially expanding his vocabularly beyond base profanity, drug abuse and his book is extremly repetive. The first joke about getting muslims laid was not that funny and the 5th or 6th joke about it was even less funny. ALso his constant gay jokes almost boarders on gay bashing. How many slut jokes can one do in one book? His cracks on race and religion do border on insult. I think Bill is the one who is illogical here. This book is way out of date and the only thing I can do with it.. is well.. trash it. If anyone laid anything, Mr.Maher laid a goose egg with this book. New Rule Bill! Get Real!
I don't sit on the same side of the political fence as Bill, but his ability to create sharp biting & brilliant comments is well worth the read.
If you collect humor (and I do, as a professional speaker), you should own this book.
Fantastic, funny, fast read!
I got this book for my dad who's a pretty big Bill Maher fan (as am I). We both readand enjoyed it. It's broken down into small segments rather than chapters, so it was a very quick read and easy to digest. I think I got through most of it while sitting in the waiting room the doctor's office. There were definately parts that made me laugh out loud, but I would say most of it was just okay. If you're a fan of Bill Maher and familiar with his New Rules segment, you'll probably enjoy it.
I don't like Bill Maher. I find him rude, boorish, and generally obnoxious. In this respect, his personality has carried over to this book fairly well. This book is an extended series of Maher's "polite musings," which must be code for bad jokes and general misogyny. Cracks about rape and prostitution are always classy, and, what can I say, Maher is a classy guy.
...
Yeah right.
The book is occasionally amusing, in the way a spoiled brat can occasionally inspire a contemptuous chuckle. The sections are all extremely short (the longest is around two pages, and most are much shorter), and the book is padded with cheap B&W pictures. Leave it in the bathroom when you need something to occupy your mind and you want to amuse yourself at someone else's expense. In this case, at Maher's expense.
A special treat for the HBO-less who haven't been privy to these New Rules before.Brilliantly insightful and hilarious.

Bill Maher's "True Story" is a great novel I also thought that the focus onmultiple characters instead of one central protaganist was very effective, and his style of writing was very entertaining, elegent, and literate. Iespecially enjoyed the excerpts of comedy acts that he worked into thenarrative. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Spin -- intentional manipulation of the truth -- is everywhere. It's in the White House, in the courtrooms, in headlines and advertising slogans. Even couples on dates -- not to mention book blurbs -- are guilty of spin. Here, colorful news analyst Bill Press freeze-frames the culture of spin to investigate what exactly spin is, who does it and why, and its impact on American society. Using examples drawn from recent history -- the Clinton presidency, the Florida recount, and the Bush White House -- Press first probes spin's favorite haunt: politics. He then surveys incarnations of spin in journalism, law, and advertising, and chews on the spin of sex and "dating," a word that has become the very embodiment of spin. Perhaps surprisingly, however, Press argues that spin isn't all bad, and that without it the harsh truths of our times might be unbearable. With a keen sense of humor, Spin This! turns the tables on the prime purveyors of spin by highlighting some of their biggest blunders. Looking to the future, Press notes that the twenty-first century, beginning as it has with a president who was "spun into office," will be a fertile stomping ground for spin. Don't say you weren't warned. Customer Reviews (16)
I was duped by false advertising!!!!
LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE
Here's some spin: This book's not completely horrible! Like some other reviewers, I was hoping for a decent discussion on spin; what, how, why. Instead, this book is an repetitive barage of mildly entertaining anecdotes, slams and profane asides. (I'm not easily offended, but any political writer who uses the word 'bl**job' as much as Press does gets a bit annoying.) That's not to mention that the book could also, and was likely intended to, serve as an advertisement for his CNN show "Crossfire" as he mentions it once per page. To his credit, this book is non-partisan, candid and from time to time, fun. Still, from his discussions on different kinds of spin, the history of spinning and all the rest, there was not one original thought in these pages. Everything Press presses in this book, we've all thought before while pondering the nature of political spin. With that in mind, it's tough to say whether Press was being deliberately condescending by writing this book, or if that was only the unintended consequence.

Editorial Review Product Description This book is a collection of hilarious but true tales from people who've all gotten the ax, the boot, or been canned at some point in their lives. In "That's a Fact," Andy Borowitz tells the story of being fired as a writer for the television sitcom The Facts of Life after being informed that he just didn't "get" Tootie. "Take that hanger off your head, you idiot!" were the last words Jeff Garlin heard before being fired from Spec's Music store after only one day on the job, just one of the many firings he recounts in "That Garlin Boy." In "Jimmy the Idiot," Dana Gould sums up his firing from the cast of the sitcom Working that led him to become a producer of The Simpsons: "In the second episode, I was a math genius, in the third -- a motocross racer, and in the fourth episode I was replaced by a chimp, but nobody noticed." In "Poor Judgment," Illeana Douglas tells about being fired after a few hours of working as a coat check girl: "How is it possible to be fired from hanging coats? I have arms. I know what coats are. I don't come home and throw my coat on the floor. I hang it in a closet. I have experience." How did Bob Saget find out he was being phased out of his job on The Morning Program? "One day I showed up and my hosting chair was gone!" With an all-star cast from Tim Allen to Morgan Spurlock, from Anne Meara to David Cross, and contributions from people from all over the country, this book proves it's not the bounce that counts, it's the bounce back. Editorial Review Product Description The Lewinsky saga really should be ho-hum by now, but AmericanRhapsody's Evel Knievel-like leaps of free association and mad briobreathe life into it. You've never been properly introduced to Linda Trippand Lucianne Goldberg until you've read "The Ratwoman and the Bag Lady ofSleaze," its uproarious take on the pair. American Rhapsody givesdozens of stars time in the sweaty spotlight: Matt "the Scavenger" Drudge, heroic Larry Flynt (whose threat to report Republican scandals Eszterhascredits with quashing impeachment)--almost every big political scandalvictim in memory. And there are lots of Hollywood types behaving badly: Bob Dylan,Warren Beatty, Ronald Reagan, Farrah Fawcett, Sharon Stone, Robert Evans,Sly Stallone (who wanted to portray Jesus onscreen), and even JoeEszterhas. The fantasy chapters, printed in boldface, are sometimes funny(e.g., "Kenneth W. Starr Confesses"), but mostly they're both over the topand below the belt (e.g., "Willard Comes Clean," the confessions of thepresident's penis). What holds your interest is the main narrative, a headymix of showbiz gossip, personal essay, and Lester Bangs-style prose mania.--Tim Appelo Customer Reviews (81)
Joe Eszterhas has created a genre
Irresistably preposterous-- But know what you are in for
????? But there is only so much you can talk about this subject and JE rambles on and on until he finally manages to really offend me.How?Well, I just finished his most recent book, "American Animal" an autobiography which I immensely enjoyed.Full of Hollywood stories. But reading this, I see that JE has included many of the stories I enjoyed from his autobiography in this political commentary/fantasy.So is he a writer with a message or is he just repeating his few stories to make a buck? I don't know what to make of this book, thus my title.Did I enjoy some parts?Yes.Are there some interesting stories?Yes.But there is a lot of waste. It's like wandering thru a jungle with a machete looking for your trail. When you find it, it's worth the work.So maybe the only item I can add of interest came from reading this with some years of aging.JE takes on Arianna Huffington who he spends quite a bit of time describing her history to show what a bad person she is and how she climbed to the top while stepping on other people's faces. But would JE have included these chapters in this form if he had known that within a few years she would shift sides and now disavow her right wing leanings?I think not. This is not a great book. But if you enjoy reading, maybe you will enjoy it.
Decent and Deplorable- in prose from the spheres. Eszterhas obviously knows more and remembers more than is probably good for him, but his prose is stunning as is the manner by which he weaves the book together- even with some fiction. The author was the screenwriter for Fatal Attraction and had a relationship with Sharon Stone- who also takes some upper cuts and was rumored to have been intimate with Clinton as well. I definitely recommend reading this- for the humor and frankly, The gossip is completely consuming.
