5-0 out of 5 stars Love the baskets
I just love the baskets in this book. It's well written, easy to read and use.I've had hours of creative work stemming from ideas in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good designs, great instructions
I find that the designs themselves are fine, and presented in such a way that they can be added to or adjusted/changed.What I think is impressive about this book are the instructions. The instructions on how to use the Clover bias strip maker (for stems, etc) made me proficient, something the instructions on the product itself did not do.They present options for applique methods and the how-tos for each method.I was impressed with the clarity and usability of this book. ... Cindy Harper has an ice-cream flavor for every emotion. Vanilla caramel fudge eases the stress of dealing with her weird and wacky guests at the Woo Woo Inn. But no sweet treat from her freezer is smooth, creamy, or tempting enough to cool down her dark fantasies about Thrain Davis.

Thrain is a man to be enjoyed on a strictly primitive level. Every woman who’s ever seen him smile wonders about the pleasure his mouth could give her and recognizes the secrets in his hard blue gaze. Too late Cindy realizes the danger of inviting an ancient vampire into her inn. The concept of fanged creatures of the night scares her witless. Besides, he forces her to examine her past when she’s just fine with her present. He does have an upside, though. Who needs ice cream when you have a hot and yummy immortal in your bed? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE Nina Bangs!
Ok, just to let you know, Nina Bangs writes quite possibly the most hilarious sensual romance books you will ever read. This one was no exception. Her main characters were VERY well developed, and her secondary characters-like Sparkle and Ganymede-were also very well done. And I LOVE the name of the inn! One thing that wasn't made clear was if Cynthia was a vampire or not, but other then that, the story was fantastic! Loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nina Bangs Fan!!!
I loved this book!!!If you love paranormal romance stories, anything by Nina Bangs, you can't go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Whisky Galore
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. As has been stated in the other reviews, the story is based on a true event that occured during the Second World War.I found MacKenzies development of tension leading up to the wreck to be masterful, but think that the story began to unravel once the ship found itself on the rocks, so to speak, and was being looted.Still, it is a great read, and have recommended the book to others in the past, and do so here as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful book
This is a novel based on the wreck of the S.S. Politician off the Outer Hebrides during the Second World War.The author lived there at the time and has written an hilarious story. It has good language, good characters, and a good plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best story set in Scotland ever
The movie takes place in the Scottish Hebrides. The locals, are deeply affected by the war against who though..lol, but, they manage to survive.

Great movie/book whatever.

Make a DVD PLEASE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
A delightfully comic yarn by a master story teller, Whisky Galore tracks the effects of a whisky shortage, and then a whisky surplus, on the fictional islands of Great and Little Todday, in the Scottish Hebrides, during World War II. A tale told with a tremendous love for the people and the heritage of the Hebrides. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars good amusing sea tale of the scottish hebrides
This is an outrageous story set in the Scottish Hebrides. Two rival islands suffer a lack of any drink due to the conditions caused by the war (WW2).This unfathomable hardship is providentially relieved by the running aground of a ship laden with (what else?) whiskey.Drinking is not this funny any more, so the light treatment it gets here is refreshing. In this revision of their best-selling text, MacKenzie and Curran present a clear and objective account of the history of Russians and other eastern Slavs from its beginnings in ancient Rus to the demise of the Soviet Union and, most recently, the Putin presidency. Acclaimed in the field for its clarity, comprehensiveness, and accuracy, the text balances social/cultural history with political history. The authors' approach weaves the external geographic determinism of the Eurasian school and the organic, inner-oriented approach of Russian historians. ... Read more

Product Description
For decades the FBI let Whitey Bulger get away with murder. In exchange for being left alone to control his criminal enterprise, he provided the agency with information until the arrangement went sour and Bulger, now on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, went on the lam. Throughout the 1980s, the author, "Eddie Mac," was one of the Mob's, and Bulger's, enforcers. Complex, intelligent, and seemingly perennially doomed, he tells a tale of ruthless mobsters, turncoat FBI agents, and other criminal associates, many of them with links to trials or scandals still in the news today. Accompanied by black-and-white photographs, this riveting narrative not only delivers the goods on Eddie Mac's one-time boss and the Irish Mob in Boston, but also chronicles MacKenzie's parallel search for family, respect, and acceptance amidst a life of crime.Amazon.com Review
All due respect to the Gambinos and the Genoveses, but the Italian mob families aren’t the only gangsters to make for compelling memoirs. In terms of relentless ruthlessness and its obsession with the almighty dollar, the Irish mob of Boston’s James "Whitey" Bulger could match its New York counterparts hit for bloody hit. For decades, Edward J. MacKenzie, Jr. (a.k.a. Eddie Mac) was a drug dealer, enforcer, and key associate of Bulger (on the lam as this book was published). Mac's first-person account of those years is rife with more gory details per page than the entire last season of The Sopranos.

By the brutal code of honor and loyalty in the streets, the candid dishing of such dirt marks MacKenzie as a world-class rat, second only to Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, the man who put John Gotti away. But Eddie Mac has some justification in spilling the beans; in exchange for his tips, the Feds turned a blind eye toward his crimes. (It's also worth nothing that Bulger himself was an informant for the FBI.) The author certainly doesn’t portray himself as any sort of hero or "gangster with a heart of gold." Witness his charming account of one of many attempts to "enlighten" a wayward associate: "Probation notwithstanding, I had to open Steve’s eyes a little. I headed over to Dunkin’ Donuts and bought a cup of coffee for $1.24. Medium, black, scalding hot. . . .Steve was still in his car, sleeping like a baby. The window was down and he had his head against the door, hands under his cheeks. I poured the hot coffee down the side of his face, making sure to get some on his eyeballs. . . I swear if I’d had enough money to buy the gasoline that day that’s what I would have done. . .but I’d only had $1.30, so the coffee had to do."

Although MacKenzie has not one but two ghost writers (Karas is a contributor to People magazine and the author of The Onassis Women, while Muscato is a self-described "strategic communications consultant"), the prose never rises above the level of the sleaziest pulp fiction. But that of course is exactly its appeal, and fans of the true-crime genre will find Street Soldier a supreme pleasure, guilty or not. --Jim DeRogatis ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Street Soldier
By now we're all familiar with Whitey Bulger, the savvy boss of a ruthless Boston crime family. One of his no doubt countless hangers-on was Edward MacKenzie.MacKenzie was, like no doubt countless others, violent, ruthless, and eager in performing illegal acts benefiting Mr. Bulger.Unfortunately, MacKenzie has continued his anti-social ways in foisting this book recounting his criminal history on society.Stilted, dim witted, and not even evocative, it's easily one of the worst crime books published by a company not paid for the service.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Bulger book
You can fill a bookshelf or two with books that deal with infamous Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger.Several of them have been written by former members of his gang, including Kevin Weeks and Red Shea. This book comes under that category, and like the others it doesn't add much insight into Bulger. The book is more about MacKenzie himself--rough upbringing, life of crime, redemption--and it's not a unique story. If you're a Bulger addict and you want to read everything available about him, then by all mean do not ignore STREET SOLDIER.But if you want a more complete picture of Bulger's deeds, I would recommend one of the books written by the Boston journalists who covered his heyday.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe.
The writer seemed high on himself. I did not believe a lot of the things he said in the book. Some parts seemed to be based on fiction instead of reality.I didn't live this guys life so who knows, I could be wrong. For me I did not enjoy it. I am considering reading Kevin Weeks's story to see if they match up and if his is even mentioned in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wicked good book.
Such a good book.Definitely gives a great glimpse of the life of a soldier in Boston's Irish Mob.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gritty Read
Eddie Mac is the most, 'approchable' of the writing Whitey associates. This is a down and gritty write from an inside perspective of 'Whitey' Bulger's Irish Mob.An excellent read for anyone interested in the inside workings of Boston's Irish underground. This book does focus much attention on Eddie Mac's personal life and what led him to his life of crime.Eddie Mac doesn't hold back, and tells it all, from the embarassing to the, so called, 'glorious.'Must read for those interested in the topic.Eddie does not glorify himself as some others do.In fact you are almost convienced Eddie is sorry for what he did.You almost want to console him, but watch out, he is dangerous!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased...Finally!
Description from the back of book:

Cash McQueen was a hard man, a man who believed in the land and nothing else. With the land, a man knew where he stood. It was different with a woman. There wasn't one alive who could be trusted-and Mariah MacKenzie was no exception.

The minute she showed up at the Rocking M Ranch with not much more than the clothes on her back and a map of a long-lost gold mine, Cash knew she was trouble. Yet he couldn't seem to stop wanting her brand of trouble. But nothing would ever again make him place his trust in a woman-not even a woman he wanted as badly as Mariah MacKenzie.

* Finally!I found one in this series that I absolutely loved.I hated book #1, which I feel you don't need to read to enjoy this series.Book #2 & #3 were better but I really fell in love with Cash & Mariah.I was so glad to finally read about Cash & I had wondered about Mariah for a minute in book #2 so I was really glad to get to meet her.I have to say that although I haven't really liked the setting & the history of this series it worked for me in this book & the ending was to die for.I couldn't stop the tears.I recommend the contemporary books (#2-#5) in this series & I say skip book #1.That being a historical & the others being contemporary I think you're safe to skip it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read

1-0 out of 5 stars This book stinks!
How anyone can continue to read Elizabeth Lowell's tired formula for her books is beyond me.I decided to give her one more try, but once again was trapped in the dreadful plot.Basically all her novels come down to some emotionally retarded hero who has been deeply wounded in the past by someone or something (this part varies)who desperately want to be with some extremely young girl (usually gets the hots for her by age 16 but manages to hold off his passion in the usual Lowell way by drinking too much when the urge gets great).Innocent young girl tries to declare her love to the wounded hero & gets hurt by his rejection which then conveniently hurts her so badly that she can't function sexually with another man and this psychological chastity belt keeps her a virgin until she becomes old enough that the guy won't be charged with sex with a minor, at which time he decides to help her heal & they get together (usually with her pregnant at the end of the book & thrilled that she has given up whatever career she had planned to stay home & take care of the Wounded Man and the brood of babies she has started).I can hear the sound of retching even now!Don't waste your time with this stinker, or any of the other crummy throwaway romances she writes.Find someone who writes characters who actually have lives & don't spend all their time trying to prove how unfit to breed they truly are!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT READ
I just loved this book.I fell in love with all of the characters.I enjoyed the large extended family living on a ranch; envisioning the beautiful surroundings.Mariah was great. She was full of passion; was a kind person.Cash was wonderful. He was strong and sexy.I loved the things he said to her.He also had a hard time trusting women; having been burned by another. This makes the coming together of Mariah and Cash even more special. I also loved the ending. It made me cry; it was so heartfelt. This was an excellent read; it just swept me away.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay but not great
Bindy Mackenzie is an over-achiever, but doesn't really realize it. She tries hard and gets good grades etc. and that's all that she cares about. Her parents tend to leave her on her own and she doesn't really have any friends except for Ernst von Schmerz. She has her school days completely mapped out until they introduce the new FAD (Friendship and Development) class. Here she is forced to miss study hall and interact with students who she describes as venomous. On top of this disgrace, someone wants to kill Bindy, and Bindy doesn't know who or why. Told in notes, memos, letters and philosophical musings The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie will keep you guessing until the end.

I was hoping this book to be as utterly amusing as The Year of Secret Assignments, and was thoroughly disappointed. Though at times this book was quite funny it didn't have quite the humor of the aforementioned title. I guess the big difference is the people telling the story, Bindy just simply isn't all that hilarious, and since she doesn't really have any buddies they could not be hilarious for her. I will say that this book did leave me wondering about what was going to happen until the end, a very good mystery. I did not like Bindy's father though he was a jerk. I am disappointed that Bindy did not notice what a jerk he was and instead admired him. I liked that this novel takes place in Ashbury school yet again, so I recognized some of the characters from The Year of Secret Assignments and Feeling Sorry for Celia. This book was enjoyable although not as good as TYOSA, so I suggest to read this only if you feel like knowing more about the fruity character Bindy that you read about in TYOSA.

First Line:
"I have never spoken to Bindy, but I am sure that behind her extremely annoying personality she is a beautiful human being."

Favorite Line:
"No offense, but someone needs to arrange a slow and painful death for you, Bindy."

4-0 out of 5 stars A delight!
"The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie" is my favorite Moriarty novel so far. I guess I am now used to the author's writing style, or maybe I can identify with Bindy better than with any other of her characters (I only pray I wasn't quite like Bindy in my overachieving teen years).

Bindy was introduced in Moriarty's previous books as an annoyingly smart student with killer typing skills. She excels at everything, she is very driven and thinks of herself as superior to other Ashbury students. Only in her run for excellence she builds walls around herself and misses out on friendships with her peers.

As usual, Moriarty's books are never just about teen issues, there is always some kind of mystery or crime involved. Same goes for this particular book. This story is not just a sort of makeover tale in which Bindy realizes her wrongs and changes herself by becoming more accessible to people around her, but a murder mystery too, and Bindy is at the center of it.

Once again, this novel has its signature Moriarty epistolary style and is made entirely out of notes, memos, and diaries. It is hard to put down and it gives a great insight into teen minds. I liked getting to know Bindy, I enjoyed her nerd wit and her condescending ways, but I also enjoyed finding out what exactly had made Bindy the way she was.

Simply, a great novel. I am looking forward to the next Moriarty novel which is out this year and, surprise-surprise, set in Ashbury High and has many of my old favorites in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bindy sure is.... Different.
I have never read a teen novel with SUCH great characterization! I'm used to blah characters that somehow get into serious situations, like in a Sarah Dessen book. (Which I enjoy, but it gets boring.)
I can't exactly relate to Bindy, but it's always interesting to get into the head of an outcast.
Bindy is at the top of her class, as urged by her father, and is working herself to death(!), just trying to stay on top.
But because of her academic excellence and 'better-than-thou' persona, people don't understand her in the least... She's just so strange!
Her actions are ridiculous sometimes, but you can't help, well, not wanting her dead!
This book is so much different from anything out there, I definitely recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars don't give up
I was extremely excited for Moriarty's new book after reading The Year of Secret Assignments so I practically dove into this one. It has a great plot, but it just takes a while to get to it. I literally couldn't put it down when I did get to it, though.

The character of Bindy Mackenzie is an outsider to her own age group. She provides unique insight as to how teenagers today. I saw reflections of myself in some of her character descriptions.

Bindy is very hard to relate to, but she can be understood after you get to know her. I think this is why the plot takes so long to unfold-there's no way that it would hold the same meaning if you didn't get where Bindy was coming from.

My advice is this: Don't give up on it because of its slow beginning. The plot has you on the edge of your seat when it comes your way... Trust me!

1-0 out of 5 stars 488 pages of nonsense and garbadge
if your sense of humor doesn't include writing "interesting" facts about cane toads and handing it out to a guy in your school, then don't enen THINK about buying this book.

The "murder" of bindy macenzie isn't even really a murder, she just "thinks" it is.Bindy's character is annoying, un funny, and boring...need i say more? The book isn't even funny, it's just page after page, after page of blah blah blah NONSENSE with flowery language. Not flowery language like that of Edgar Allan Poe's, but boring, dull, business formal, primm and propper language.I was asleep after the first ten pages.

however...this book has some great uses if you don't want to read it:

2. Origami paper/paper airplane material
3. Cup coaster
4. Wedge for a door
5. Weapon for self defense if you're ever being robbed

Product Description
When I first saw learned of the existence of this book, I was a little suprised, since very little concrete information is available on this topic, and even less was known in 1917. However, to paraphrase a recent President of the United States, Myths of Crete depends on what your definition of of is....

There is substantial mythology about Crete. The Minoan civilization, which predated the better known classical Hellenic period by several hundred years, disappeared catastrophically, battered by volcanic eruptions and barbarian incursions. Successive generations, starting with the classical Greeks, created a vast number of myths about the vanished sea-empire. The Homeric epics, Daedalus and Icarus, King Minos and the Minotaur, and even, as Mackenzie points out, Atlantis, were all influenced by hearsay and speculation about the lost Cretan empire.

At the beginning of the 20th century archeologists finally started to excavate the Minoan ruins. Based lagely on circumstantial evidence such as the vivid wall art and the startling Goddess iconography, popularizers like Mackenzie built an entire new set of myths about the ancient Cretans. This mythology was eagerly adopted by neo-pagans, starting with Robert Graves, who wrote a little-known science fiction novel on the subject, Watch the Northwind Rise.

What do we actually know about Minoan mythology as of today? In a word, nothing. The Minoans developed the first known European writing systems, known as Linear A and B. Linear B was deciphered by Michael Ventris in 1952. Only commercial documents have been found, as befits a sea-trading empire. The other Minoan script, Linear A, remains a mystery. Although the phonetic values of some Linear A symbols have been tenatively identified, they have yet to be translated. So we have no translated Minoan religious documents to work with, although we can infer that certain Linear A texts are magical or religious in nature because they are inscribed on ritual objects.

We can assume from the prevelence of female images in ritual contexts that the Minoans worshipped one or more Goddesses. We also know that animals played an important role in their rituals, particularly snakes and bulls. However, any attempt at this point to make definite statements about their mythology or spiritual practices is inferential at best.

Nevertheless, Mackenzie, who also wrote Myths and Legends of Ancient Egypt, manages to stretch the subject matter out into a full 300 page book. Informative, well researched and very readable, Myths of Crete is a unique book about a very opaque period of history. --J.B. Hare ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kidney Disease book
This Kidney Disease book is very helpful. Haven't read cover-to-cover, just scanning through to pick up information that I need at the moment and haven't been disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Talking Points for your Next Visit with the Kidney Doctor
I'm glad I bought this book because it was very easy to read and gave me plenty of useful talking points to discuss with my doctors.I read this book after consulting with a nephrologist regarding my recent diagnosis for CKD.It was refreshing to learn that both the author, Dr. Walser, and my doctors agree on following a course of treatment that will help defer dialysis for as long as possible. This includes the low protein diet advocated in this book.I'm planning on meeting with a registered dietician to help me plan meals that will fit my specific needs.

The best parts of this book come from the author's discussion of the 12 treatment factors to pay close attention to.It's a good checklist to run by your doctors, especially if you don't have the resources to self test.Like other reviewers mentioned, I agree that the list of low protein foods and recipes could use some help. But I did find it a useful place to start.I also found the discussion of drug benefits and risks quite useful.

The book was written several years ago and it might be worth following up on the studies mentioned inside.Overall, though, I would recommend it for newly diagnosed kidney patients and their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source
I read this book then went to see the book reviews again, I agree with all positive comments and disagree with some negative ones. I found the tables of food protein content not very handy. Although tables classified food from low to high protein content and what is safe to eat and what is not, the amount of protein was given per 100 calories of that food not per a measured quantity, cup, table spoon..etc. which does not serve the ordinary reader much. Otherwise, I found the book extremely helpful and a must-read for every kidney patient. It explains in easy-to-understand language ALL the topics that can in a way or another affect your kidney. After reading the tons of tips, you'll end up with SOLID education about kidney function and disease. Remember, in a 10 minute visit, your doctor will not educate you about your kidney, he barely has time to give you few important tips, and here is where this book comes into play. EDUCATION IN MY OPENION IS AS IMPORTANT AS MEDICATIONS. I looked at the publications available in the market that deal with kidney disease and found this book a unique source of hundreds of tips to help you push dialysis or kidney transplant as far as possible. Thankfully, not only a doctor or a professor at a top university for decades, Dr. Walser has solid background in kidney disease, and for a $12 price, this book is Walser's contribution to kidney patients compared to other publications written by, what I like to call, human word-processors with no medical background selling for 6 times as much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Good, Some Bad
This book contains a lot of good practical information about kidney disease. It also contains a lot of contradicting advice, such as reducing dietary salt then proposing a dietary menu that has over 1100mg of salt in one serving.Kidney patients are often advised to reduce dietary potassium consumption. The author disagrees and some of the recipes and menu items are very high in potassium. I felt that the proposed "low protein" diet was very poor, not something I would be willing to eat no matter how much time the author claims it will keep me off dialysis.Much of it is prepared food that is purchased and while it might be low in protein, it's pretty low in real food value as well. The menus also included a lot of food I would not eat normally, like alcohol (for the calories, the author says) potatoe chips and snack bars. What the author does not discuss is how many people go on the low protein diet and do not benefit.Indeed, that would be difficult if not impossible to measure: was it the diet or was it some other factor that delayed dialysis?

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitly worth reading if you have chronic kidney disease
Despite having read all the free information available on the Internet, I found the book to be an extremely helpful, honest and factual summary of the symptoms of the different kinds of kidney disease and the available treatment options. Although the central treatment recommendation of the book is the low protein diet, the author also gives a list of conditions to monitor and the appropriate corrections for each in order to maintain health and fitness.

I definitely recommend the book to anyone with chronic kidney disease - even if you only get a couple of tips from it, they could be the tips that save you from dialysis or a transplant! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential look at an all but forgotten Scottish writer
It was natural that Andro Linklater should write the biography of Compton Mackenzie. His father, Eric Linklater ("Magnus Merriman," "A Prince in the Heather" etc.,) was a well-known writer and friend ofMackenzie throughout much of his life. It was just a coincidence that Androcould and would write.

A complex man (whoever met a simple Scot?),Mackenzie was in his prime in the early part of this century and much ofwhat he wrote all those years ago is slowly fading into the mists of time.Perhaps he is best remembered for "Whiskey Galore," a comedyabout a boatload of Scotch washing up on the shore of an island in theHebrides, and the fun which ensued. In a sense, it was his moment of glory(perhaps his "15 minutes"), since the 1948 film made from thebook was popular for many years. Yet he wrote a formidable number of othergood novels (sometimes set in Scotland itself, but not always) such as"Sinister Street," and numerous essays and the odd memoir. Likehis books, Mackenzie was a colourful character and makes a good subject forbiography, which Linklater has competently provided. ... Read more

Product Description

The Orientalism debate, inspired by the work of Edward Said, has been a major source of cross-disciplinary controversy in recent years. John MacKenzie offers a comprehensive re-evaluation of this vast literature of Orientalism and brings to the subject highly original historical perspectives. This study provides the first major discussion of Orientalism by a historian of imperialism. Setting the analysis within the context of conflicting scholarly interpretations, John MacKenzie then carries the discussion into wholly new areas, testing the notion that the western arts received genuine inspiration from the East by examining the visual arts, architecture, design, music and theatre.
