4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, somewhat informative
Had this book been titled Jung and Fairy Tales I would have given it five stars. It's wonderfully written and makes use of fairy tales from around the world to make it clear that there are fundamental aspects of our unconscious that we all share. However, I read it hoping to gain a deeper understanding of the shadow's role and was disappointed in that sense. Still, as a general view of a Jungian approach to fairy tales I found this book both academic and accessible. Lastly, I feel I should mention that, while only a minor grievance, there were a number of typos which I always find frustrating in published works.

5-0 out of 5 stars When spooky is good
Love fairy tales? Then this book will give you an understanding of why stories have always enthralled us; where do shadow and evil come from and how do we learn from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal look into the darkness
I love MLVF as an author, first of all. Her work is so concise and to the point, and absolutely eye-opening at all times. She not only sees really clearly, but is especially skilled at helping other people to. This book is one of my favorites that I have read by her. The other one is the one about dreams and death. This book is an exceptionally good look at how evil and the shadow operate and are expressed by the psyche. Also, whether or not you're into fairy tales, this book is still a great resource, in terms of psychology, creativity, mythology and cultural expression. ... Read more

Product Description

"This may well be a seminal book--a courageous eye-opener that could fundamentally alter our approach to the treatment of chronic fatigue." -- From the foreword by Michael Rosenbaum, M.D.

Answering the question on the minds of 75 percent of Americans, Why Am I Always So Tired?, leading nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman shows us how we canbe more alert and active by eliminating excess copper in our diets and increasing our zinc intake. The time-tested formula points out which culprits steal energyfrom us--namely trendy, low-fat diets--that make otherwise healthy people feel drained.

This revolutionary book offers Gittleman's insights into how we can modify our diets and lifestyles to increase our energy and prevail over the chronic fatigue thatplagues us with symptoms such as: anxiety, insomnia, skin problems, frequentcolds, and roller-coaster emotions. Using her research and breakthroughfindings, Gittleman helps us eliminate these problems and access the energywe didn't know we had.

Amazon.com Review
Copper overload is an insidious but increasingly commonnutritional problem, says Ann Louise Gittleman, author of thebestselling BeyondPritikin. She says that difficulty getting out of bed, middayslumps, mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety may be symptoms of acopper/zinc imbalance. She discovered this link after she encounteredseveral patients in her nutritional practice--most of them women--whowere not suffering from hypothyroidism, adrenal problems, or anemia(as she had suspected), but rather a mineral imbalance that wasdiagnosed after simple hair testing.

Vegetarian diets, low-fatdiets, and taking multivitamins--all ostensibly healthy moves--can makeyou more susceptible to copper overload. So do less-healthyactivities, including drinking alcohol and coffee, taking cortisone, and being constantly stressed. (These activities sap the body of zinc, says Gittleman, jeopardizing the delicate zinc/copper homeostasis inthe body.) Home tap water may also be overloaded with copper, andwomen are susceptible to absorbing copper from intrauterinedevices.

To remedy the overload, Gittleman outlines an easy planfor renewing health and increasing energy. She includes aquestionnaire to help determine if copper overload may be a problemfor you; gives resources for hair analysis in case your doctor doesn'thave one; instructs on how to read a tissue-analysis report; andoutlines a sensible diet plan, including menus to keep the zinc/copperbalance in check.

Up to 80 percent of the general populationcomplains about fatigue; Gittleman's book may very well offer a simplesolution for thousands of people. --Erica Jorgensen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Am I Always So Tired" by Ann Louise Gittleman
Ann Louise Gittleman presents a balanced, progressive, and enlightening approach to naturally reducing copper overload. She is way ahead of conventional healthcare with identifying this health challenge. And, she empowers motivated individuals to restore health and vitality with her guidance and support. She provides a resource section, in the back of this book, to support individuals with restoring their health. This book will become known as one that exposed the problem of copper overload way before the day copper overload becomes known as an epidemic in our culture.I encourage every parent, who has a child who suffers with emotional and behavioral challenges, to read this book and to consult with Dr. Malter, Ph.D (noted in resource section) about the psychological implications of copper overload in children, adolescents, and adults.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Am I Always So Tired?
This book is very insightful with advice on why some people may be tired all of the time and are told by their physician(s) that there is nothing wrong with them. "Copper Overload", as the author calls it, could be a primary reason for why so many people are always so tired. I mainly bought the book because I have suffered with this problem most of my life. It started with me when I was in High School and now I am in mymid 40's still combating this problem.I am an adult male, and although the author states that this happens primarily to woman, she does not discount that it also happens to men as well. She gives reasons as to why the reader may be suffering from fatigue all of the time and shows the reader ways of combating this illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only good if you have Excess Copper or Low Zinc
Her theory is that copper may be causing fatigue in some people, however, this is rare as most of us are able to excrete any excess copper. Thus, you should get a hair analysis test done to find out (you can buy these online for about $80). If you do indeed have excess copper you can follow the supplement and dietary guidelines she provides. Her advise is holistic, so recovery will most likely take longer. There are a couple of prescription meds available to help rid of excess copper which she does not discuss at all.

She also discusses the very important role of zinc (which will also be tested if you order a hair analysis). Although I did not test high for copper, I do have very low zinc and thanks to this book I can work on that which should help in my overall health.

If you have copper overload or low zinc there is a "Nutritional Data" website that will tell you exactly how much of each is in different foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Now I know exactly what my health problems have been for over 20 years....copper!Very informative read and very interesting.Definately recommend this book for anyone to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an answer to my problems!!!
After suffering for many years from acne, dry skin, hair falling out, anxiety disorders, occasional insomnia and hormonal problems like bad pms, I have finally found what the causes of all these problems were; Copper toxicity! After reading Gittleman's book, I had a hair mineral analysis done and my copper levels were 5 times the normal limit! I have been following the advice in this book for 3 months and I feel like a totally new person. A very overlooked problem that could be the cause of many health problems especially for women. Go buy the book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Away Laughing On A Fast Camel
In this book, the fifth book in the Georgia Nicolson series, not many things happen.
There is more rambling, more nonsense, and quite a few hilarious moments.

Two boys are pursued-
Dave the Laugh, who Georgia is falling in love with even if she doesn't want to admit it.
Masimo, the new lead singer for The Stiff Dylans. He is also Robbie's replacement. He is Italian. Georgia is also falling for him.

And besides that...nothing.
Georgia and her friends do the crazy things they always do, Angus is insane as always.
Oh, and there may just be a new addition to the household of the Nicolson's.
It may or may not be a cat.

The funniest of all the books so far.
No, I did not laugh out loud on more than three occasions. Definately not.
Actually, I did.
Louise Rennison, you are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
Georgia Nicolson is so funny and just doesn't realize she is in love with Dave the laugh. This book is just as good as the first four.

5-0 out of 5 stars Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series.Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad.One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey".You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants.I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls.I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang.Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!

5-0 out of 5 stars True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!
I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This was the perfect take to the beach book. I finished it quickly and then wished there was a part two. Interesting characters and plot. It sort of faded near the end but it was still a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such A Good Book...
I seriously could not put it down. I picked it up at around 11pm unable to sleep thinking "This will bore me to sleep for sure"...Geez was i mistaken. I read the whole BOOK last nite, i didn't want to go to sleep not knowing what happens next. Its so filled with adventure, drama, intrigue, good dose of sex, love and rock and roll. Its moving with these girls through parts of their lives as they discover themselves. Absolutely loved it! It was a book bought home with my father so you could see why i thought it would be boring lol...but i loved it and i would totally reccommend this book...to be read somewhere in the morning or afternoon so you don't wake up the next day dog tired like i am hahaha...

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong, determind characters in this great novel
What i love about Louise Bagshawe's books as that they have the ability to hook the reader. With juicy plot lines, handsome men and strong females. What i love about The Devil You Know... is that these three young women are so incrediably determined and driven to succeed. These characters have spunk! Rose's storyline is interesting, as it shows just how far one will go to extract revenge, but when she looks back at her life she really has nothing else. And you just know that underneath the blistering hatred Rose has for Rothstein Realty there lurks a powerful physical attraction to the youngest heir of the family fortune...
The Devil You Know is my favourite out of Louise's books.
Sure, if you put it up against some of her others, the plot isn't exactly new, but these books are such empowering reads that i can overlook that fact. Louise's books may not be serious novels, but they are wonderful escapism that gives you hope that even girls who have been wronged can rise to the top with a little determination, courage and attitude. By the end of the book i really wanted the guy to get what was coming to him.
All in all a very good read, one that i have read several times over in fact. I look forward to many more from this very talented author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trashy but fun
This book is not one that you will rave about to your friends but it tells a good enough story to keep you reading. It is actually more like 3 and a half stars.

In a nutshell, three sisters (triplets!) are separated at birth after an act of betrayal by their uncle causes the death of their parents. Each of the girls grows up differently from the others and pursues an interesting career.

We get to know each girl very well and we understand what drives them and how they each become successful at their chosen careers.

Without revealing the ending, the girls do meet up and revenge is exacted against the uncle.

This book is not fine literature but makes for an enjoyable enough read if you are stuck inside on a rainy day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devil You Know: A Novel
This is my 4th read, and like always, I truly enjoy this book, and now I own it. This book has that "power" to just grab you to the point that you never want to put it down - it is a true page turner. It was interesting to see what path each of the sisters would take, and how these paths would eventually cross to bring them together for their "first" meeting. This meeting of the sisters was satisfaction in itself. I was all for their dressing down of their "uncle." He was the devil himself. Did he not know that jealousy never lives long, that no matter what, it always comes back to bite the hand that fed it? My hat's off to Louise Bagshawe, who has become one of my favorite writers.Thank you, Louise!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaker for healing and writing
This book was a turning point for me in my writing.I found it fascinating to hear the stories behind established authors whose painful beginnings were the sources of their writings. It helped me understand the significance of story, my story included, which created a new confidence in writing.I often refer it to people who express a desire to write but who feel no one wants to hear their story. This book was very interesting to read and full of significant information about specific authors/writings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way above and beyond the call
Despite being a writer, it's so hard expressing the extent to which this book has touched my soul. I came to it desperately in need of guidance, already knowing DeSalvo's reputation as a Woolf critic I've greatly admired. I knew her book would be useful. I had no idea it would be life-changing. This is one of the most influential books on my life I've ever read, and it may even be the most influential on me. I've never found any book on this topic to truly cut to the heart of what it is to need to find healing, much less a book with as much practical advice as this one. DeSalvo doesn't spew platitudes and feel good metaphor. She presents empathetic real advice on how to free yourself from the horrors of the past. I hope to meet Louise DeSalvo one day and thank her for this book. It's touched me to the core.

5-0 out of 5 stars At The Top Of My List of Favorites
I have read a great many books on writing, and written a few myself. But Writing as a Way of Healing has gone straight to the top of my list of favorites, and I suspect that it will stay there for a very long time--perhaps for all time. But in the process of reading this book, I discovered I had to read the book that went before it, and now I want to tell you about both.

Louise DeSalvo has been teaching English and creative writing for nearly twenty years. The first in her working-class Italian family to graduate from college, she escaped a soul-deadening home life--a depressed mother, an angry father--by reading, going to the movies, and dating, dating, dating. It wasn't until the late 1980's, when she wrote a scholarly book about the impact of childhood sexual abuse on the life and work of Virginia Woolf that she began to come to terms with her own childhood traumas and the lingering shadows of her mother's death and her sister's suicide. She dealt with her pain, anxiety, and depression in a memoir called Vertigo (now available in paperback, published by Plume), in which she explored her own story. Vertigo isn't a pleasant book, or easy--it's about hidden pain and the depression and despair into which a woman can fall when she attempts to avoid self-knowledge. But it is a necessary book, for through it, DeSalvo learns that the process of life-writing is also the process of healing. What she discovered in Vertigo, and what she subsequently put to use in her own teaching, is the subject and object of Writing As a Way of Healing.

DeSalvo's section and chapter titles, by themselves, are helpful clues to the book's significance. The first section is called "Writing as a Way of Healing," and contains four chapters: Why Write, How Writing Can Help Us Heal, Writing as a Therapeutic Process, and Writing Pain, Writing Loss. Section Two is called "The Process/The Program," and has four chapters: The Healing Power of the Writing Process, Caring for Ourselves as We Write; and Stages of Growth I and II. The third section, "From Woundedness to Wholeness Through Writing" contains two chapters: Writing the Wounded Psyche and Writing the Wounded Body. The Epilogue is called "From Silence to Testimony." Each of the chapters contains suggestions for writing, examples (from such writers as Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Jamaica Kincaid, Isabel Allende, Djuna Barnes), discussion, and ideas--lots of ideas, so many ideas that you'll find yourself wanting to stop reading and start writing (something that DeSalvo herself, no doubt, would applaud).

DeSalvo refers extensively to a favorite researcher of mine--Dr. James Pennebaker--whose book Opening Up has been an important influence on my own understanding of the healing power of the writing process. When we use writing to explore traumatic or anxiety-provoking events in detail, together with the feelings that arise from those events, the writing process can help us to understand more clearly, cope in a more balanced way, and even feel better physically. Seen from this point of view, life-writing becomes a lifetime project, as we unravel the meanings of events and explore our responses to them. When we commit ourselves to this very important lifelong project--recognizing that we don't write our story once and for all and forget it!--we commit ourselves to a lifetime of learning, growing and healing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational
Although the book was not quite what I was expecting, i.e. a book that teaches you how to journal, I found it exceptional nonetheless. It was inspirational as it shared stories of other writers who write to save their sanity and souls. It also offered useful techniques to get you thinking about your memories and how to record them.

I highly recommend this very readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation Personified
My daughter Debbi gave me this book for my birthday. I read Ms. DeSalvo's book when I was in the final stages of confronting the tragic suicide of my father that happened two days before my high school Senior Prom. For nearly fifty years after the day my entrepreneur father put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger his death gnawed at me. By facing what happened to me on that dreary spring day in Boston and trying to make sense of my Pop's state of mind on the day he died I was able to dig down deep into my soul and describe how I felt. I opened up my heart and was able to face a time only years had kept at bay. By writing about my heretofore-suppressed feelings I began to sob over the keyboard and took my first steps to understand why my father died. Desalvo's book validated my earlier conclusion that writing is truly a way of healing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise...!
I have to admit that I was surprised at the quality and variety of musical style contained on this CD - I know I like Louise, but alot of times with these types of albums, you get dreary, spacy new age type music, which sounds just like every other album with a pan flute and a synthesizer - NOT THIS ONE! I would categorize the flavors on this recording as trance, some hints of eastern and middle eastern, at times light jazz, and some acoustic piano - It was beautifully done - If you like variety and Louise, you will love this! It has become my favorite CD, and I'm really picky - My friends all love it too - Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music

5-0 out of 5 stars Great things to contemplate
Though initially Louise Hay's ideas may seem a little 'out there', this CD has great thoughts to contemplate, and I love her VERY direct approach on self-acceptance. Basically her approach is 'You are good enough' - END OF STORY!! Her advice to stop beating yourself up and criticizing yourself is so direct it couldn't help but sink in!

You Can Heal Your Life (2-DVD set)
By Louise L. Hay and Friends

Entering her eighth decade of life, Louise Hay is an inspiration for all of us. There is a depth of communication, when it comes from direct and profound experience, that is inescapable. This was what I found while watching and listening to such people as Wayne Dyer, Greg Braden, Doreen Virtue, Candice Pert, Christine Northrup, Louise Hay, and many more on the subject of using affirmations and "changing your life by changing your thought." From the very roots of her transformation while practicing religious science techniques to the experiences gained during a lifetime, Louise shows how we can all become the miracle we're waiting for. Timely information for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the New Direction of the Story!
I absolutely LOVED this book! It began just after Elizabeth refused Darcy at Hunsford. On his way home from Rosings, there is a terrible accident that renders Darcy unconscious. Stemming from a misunderstanding, Elizabeth is summoned to Pemberley. What ensues completely changes the course of this beloved story. The author wove into the story quite a bit of chemistry between our two most beloved characters without the need to be explicit, which I appreciated. Any lover of P&P will find this a most delightful read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but don't preach to me!
I LOVE P&P"What If" stories. I really enjoyed this author's "Pemberley's Promise" so I thought I'd read more of her books. Just finished this one and the sequel "Obligation." Interesting, not stellar like some other What if's, but OK reads.

But what I do object to is the not-so-subtle Christian preaching here and there in these books. Yes, I know people in those times were religious, as are many in our times. But if I wanted to read Christian fiction, I would. I don't, and I don't. If you don't mind some preaching/proselytizing headed your way, you will probably enjoy these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Something like regret" is better
While I did like Assumed, I really enjoyed "Something like regret" more. In Assumed, there was just to much focus on the smell and flowers and her hankercheif.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun variation
I have spent time over the last 2 days reading "Assumed Engagement" and "Assumed Obligation" and enjoyed them both.I like this authors writing style and appreciate that she keeps the stories clean enough for me to allow my daughter to read them.Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book and I enjoyed this adaptation.I liked the way Georgiana helped Darcy change some of his attitudes and behaviors too.I look forward to reading more books by this author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Editor Please!
While I could have appreciated the author's unique spin on our beloved Bennett-Darcy story, said appreciation was continually tested by her presentation of same. I am, I confess, addicted to reading nearly anything even obliquely Austenesque. However my delight in such presentations relies on a certain resonance, both in consistency of character and competency of composition. Not that I expect words-woman-ship of the quality of Jane Austen herself to leap from the pages of the spin-off. But when, as here, its opposite slaps me in the face I cry "foul"!
My notes on the back page of Assumed Engagement include: "Cheesy... contrived... unnatural dialogue... sloppy or inaccurate use of language...grammar or sentence construction... no she wouldn't, no he wouldn't... and oh! Pulleeeeze!" Even so this might have been merely one more uneven variation on P&P - still fascinating to me in its many incarnations -if its author had not chosen to stuff in a prayer written by JA herself, and included both JA and her father as minor, in fact superfluous, cutesy characters on the 171st page of a 180-page work! I cry "foul" and "double-foul"! ... Read more

Product Description
One morning, after some particularly shocking--but awfully funny--breakfast behavior, Mary Louise realizes that she has lost her manners. I've paid so little attention to them, she thinks, that they've up and run away! She has no choice but to begin a search mission.

From a neighborhood restaurant to a doctor's office, past a hot dog vendor then a street musician, and even into the library, Mary Louise tries to find her manners. Instead she ends up making more trouble everyplace she goes. Have her manners deserted her forever?

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect fit
As a first grade teacher, I am constantly teaching comprehension strategies to my excited new readers! This book is the perfect fit for a lesson on visualizaion. The students love to create drawings of the manners based on the author's description!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
While eating breakfast, Mary Louise realizes she has lost her manners. She begins to look for them. "She turned her pockets inside out. She shook her hair. She looked up her nose. Between her toes. Inside her shoes." No manners. So off she goes to look for them---with wagon in tow.

Thankfully, Mary Louise meets Mrs. Abby, an artist, who makes a sketch of her missing manners to help in the hunt. And what does Mary Louise's manners look like? They have "big ears for listening," says Mary Louise, "[a]nd a little mouth to keep naughty words from slipping out. The arms? Short, says Mary Louise, "for not reaching across the table."

With sketch in hand, Mary Louise visits a restaurant where the waitress recognizes the manners in the picture. But, alas, they were here---"and helped put bibs on the babies and forks on the tables"---and were gone. Mary Louise continues on her way, visiting the doctor's office, the hot-dog vendor, a street musician, the bus stop. Apparently, Mary Louise's manners had "been running around town exercising themselves."

And where does she finally find her manners? Asleep in the library, kindly covered with newspapers (because they were snoring). "Nobody's perfect, not even manners," says the librarian. Into the wagon they go. Then, happy and humming, Mary Louise heads back home with a promise never to let her manners run away again.

While reading this wonderfully wry book I found myself, along with my eighth graders to whom I was reading it, laughing out loud at Mary Louise's antics. The illustrations are deliciously funny and are a perfect match with the text.

This book would be fitting for a lesson or unit on manners for the young ones, or simply as a good old-fashioned read-aloud. Although the recommended age levels are 4-8, don't discount it for use in the middle school. On several occasions I found one of my teenaged reluctant readers in the reading corner with the book, giggling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Read to your Class
The main idea of this book is to teach the reader that it is impolite to forget your manners.

If you are a teacher, this is definitely a book you will want to read to your class. It can be used to teach vocabulary in context and teach your students what it means to have manners, follow rules, and why it is impolite to forget your manners. The illustrations are hilarious and will definitely keep their attention and have them laughing to no end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Louise as an Excuse
After reading this delightful book to my 3 year old granddaughter, thenext evening we went to a restaurant for dinner.Annie behaved abominably. Correcting her repeatedly, I finaly said in desparation, " Annie, what is the matter with you?"She replied, "Gramma, I think Ilost my manners."She loves the book and that is the best review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very funny take on good manners
This book, instead of the preachy, sweet moral lesson so many books on good manners are, is a very funny romp through town as Mary Louise sets off in search of her manners.Great fun -- kids will find it very funny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I wish I had read this book before my son had turned 3.He is almost 4 now and his teacher recommended to buy the book, so I did and I also bought the next one from the same author.Very happy with both books.I will recommend them to any parent.Explains some of the odd behaviors 3 1/2 year old's present and parents can't understand. At least it made me realized its not just my kid or something that I am doing wrong there is also an "emotional" part to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars what a relief!
This book has been extremely helpful!I would highly recommend it to anyone with a 3 year old! Now that I understand better what is going on developmentally, I have been able to relax and become a better parent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get over it
I find it amusing that people are offended or diminish these books because they were written years ago. Don't like them? Tough. This is a series about typical child behavior and understanding how they think, it is not about you. So read the book, observe what you've read, and enjoy your time together. If you want a how-to manual I feel sorry for you...and your kid.
P.S. And please don't have anymore kids either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friendly Advice
I bought this book for a friend of mine with a 2 1/2 year old. Her daughter was being a typical 2 year old with tantrums, my friend was begining to worry something was wrong with her daughter since she was throwing all these tantrums. I tried to explain that this was all normal behavior. After she read the book, she said she felt better, it made her realize this is 100% normal.

5-0 out of 5 stars All behaviors are the same no matter where you live or year you are living in
After reading some of these reviews myself, I decided to purchase this book to form my own opinion. What I'm hearing from these reviews are that the book is not current. In all actuallity, behaviors are the same no matter what country you live in, or what year we are living in. Whether it be in children or adults. Who is to really say an "updated" book is the better way to go? All we as adults need to do is apply these suggestions and apply them to our children and everyday lives, in the end we will all be happy knowing these behaviors are normal, and "other" kids are going through the same thing my child is going through.
** I have started reading this book and I find it to be an excellent resource!! Can't wait to finish it ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Bagshaw keeps your attention!
I have recently discovered Ms. Bagshaws books, and am very happy I did.Her books move right along, full of very strong women, usually very young, who accomplish big things in interesting careers.
There is usually a 'mortal' enemy involved and the battles are biggies.
It's entertaining and sexy.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit of a guilty secret
I came to this novel by sheer chance. I had just finished Annie Proulx's The Shipping News while travelling in Cambodia. I had Ian McEwan's Saturday waiting to be read back at home in Yokohama. I needed a novel to see me through the last few days of my trip and for on the plane. I was in Cambodia doing film research, and in the hotel book exchange corner this title seemed ominous. I read the back cover and thought, shameless snob that I am, "This is not my usual thing, but I'll give it a go..." Well, what a page-turner! It sets a cracking pace, twists and turns in all the right places, and little episodes of sex and intrigue go off like hand-grenades all around. Strong on drama, not so hot on comedy, the whole package keeps you entertained almost all the way through. I say almost, 'cos it wraps things up just a little too neatly at the end - or is that the point? Maybe I need to read more of this stuff... The Movie is an indulgence, one that I lapped up gratefully. Read the book - ironically enough, I don't think this would make a great film.

4-0 out of 5 stars A 41/2STAR REVIEW
Movers and shakers rule a motion picture set in Louise Bagshawe's THE MOVIE (called Triple Feature in the U.S.A.), a fun and dishy tale of beautiful people gone bad. From the angelic ingenue to the diva extraordinaire, Bagshawe takes you on a wild ride of sins, money and passion.Yes, we've all seen it before, but Bagshawe's effective plot and colorful characters give THE MOVIE the edge it needs to stay above ground. Her Hollywood setting may clone the one of Jackie Collins, but the end-result is as wickedly readable. If her next outing is that much fun and exciting, Bagshawe will be more than welcome to move into the pop lit-dome.-----Martin Boucher

Product Description
edited by Marie-Laure Bernadac and Hans-Ulrich Obrist"Everyday you have to abandon your past or accept it and then if you cannot accept it, you become a sculptor."Since the age of twelve, the internationally renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois has been writing and drawing--first a diary precisely recounting the everyday events of her family life, then notes and reflections. Destruction of the Father--the title comes from the name of a sculpture she did following the death of her husband in 1973--contains both formal texts and what the artist calls "pen-thoughts": drawing-texts often connected to her drawings and sculptures, with stories or poems inscribed alongside the images.Writing is a means of expression that has gained increasing importance for Bourgeois, particularly during periods of insomnia. The writing is compulsive, but it can also be perfectly controlled, informed by her intellectual background, knowledge of art history, and sense of literary form (she has frequently published articles on artists, exhibitions, and art events). Bourgeois, a private woman "without secrets," has given numerous interviews to journalists, artists, and writers, expressing her views on her oeuvre, revealing its hidden meanings, and relating the connection of certain works to the traumas of her childhood. This book collects both her writings and her spoken remarks on art, confirming the deep links between her work and her biography and offering new insights into her creative process. ... Read more

My friend swears by these books. She says they really help her understand where her child is coming from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your five year old Sunny and Serene
This book was very helpful to my daughter.I could not find this book in the stores. Its nice to know I can look for older books at Amozon.com.and you can't beat the price. It was in great shape!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Insight for parents
These books are gems, though they are not traditional "how-to" parenting books. There are several of those that I would recommend in conjunction with these books. These books are "how-to" in a different way; how to think about your child, how to understand how your child thinks and why they do what they do. For any parent who is at all introspective, this information can be used to help adjust your focus on the things that are appropriate for your child to learn and do and to "unfocus" on things that are inappropriate for your child to be able to learn and do at a given developmental "age". I appreciate the subtitles of each book (in this case "Sunny and Serene") because it does provide a general frame of reference for engaging with your child...yes, my 5 year old still tests me, but when i think about the book's assertion that 5 year olds truly want to please their mothers (more than 4s and more than 6s), I can look at him and it fits - and it's a gentle reminder that I should like to see that behavior more than the stuff that drives me crazy...it helps me put that other stuff into perspective.

yes, the pictures are outdated, and some of the suggestions seem a little dated as well (party suggestions, for example), but put in terms of where kids truly are developmentally, rather than compared with the materialistic frenzy parents often work themselves into in terms of toys, playdates and party themes, I actually found them refreshing and "child centered".

These books are recommended in "The Blessing of a Skinned Knee", another lovely parenting book that I came to after I found these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of advice
I bought this book for a friend of mine who was getting frustrated with her kids and their tantrums. She said the book really helped her. Gave her a few "AHA moments".

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful!
My five 1/2 year old son seemed to change personalities overnight and a friend recommended this series.I wish I knew about it earlier! The book itself is a little dated, but the psychology is very relatable for today. This book explained everything my son was experiencing and now I understand how his young mind is working and a little bit of what to expect for the future.I will definitely continue to refer to this series! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars not just for children
this book is definitely not just for children. I am 22 years old and I loved this book. just like the others in the series, this book has a way of taking you back to when you were 14 or 15. It just amazes me how many of the issues that are talked about in this book, I remember having when I was in school. Everything from boyfriend troubles to teachers that you swear hate you. Its an easy and funny read. This book will keep you laughing and begging for more till the very last page. also a great book for teens who might be going through some of the problems that Georgia is facing. sometimes it helps to read about what your going through. The glossary in the back is also very amusing and helpful. I can not wait to finish reading the rest of the books in the series. i recommend this book to people of all ages. whether you are 15 and cant decide what boy you like better, or you are 99 and want to remember the good old days, and of course all ages in between.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
This book is so funny and you will be forced to laugh aloud and only put it down to pick up the next installment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Georgia Nicolson is a blast!
Georgia Nicolson has become one of my favorite nutty characters. I love the books but this is not the best in the series. Yet it is hilarious, tremendously funny and it is impossible to have a bad day with the looney characters and crazy stories Louise Rennison brings to life. I am completely crazy about Angus, that wild and impossible cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dancing in my Nuddy-Pants
Georgia is back aqain! This series is hilarious! In this book Georgia and Robbie are still together, but Robbie isn't around that much. He's on tour with his band, The Stiff Dylans, in Hamburger-a-go-go-land, a.k.a the United States. Georgia is stuck in Great Britain. Georgia's family is still totally embarrasing, but they are really funny. You should definitely read this book and the rest of the series. These books have something funny written on every page. I couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dancing In My Nuddy-Pants
I read the book Dancing In My Nuddy Pants, by Louise Rennison. This book is about a girl named Georgia Nicholson. She lives in England with her mom, dad, little sister Libby, and oddly large cat named Angus. This story is about the life of a normal teenage girl living in England.

There were many good parts in this book, but if I had to choose a favorite then I'd choose the time when she tripped "Elvis" with a wheelbarrow. Once Georgia was outside of "Elvis`" hut and she decided to pull a brutally mean joke on him. She placed a wheelbarrow outside of his hut and then she went to his window and screamed frantically like something was wrong. This caused "Elvis" too run out his door and trip over the wheelbarrow that Georgia put there, but Georgia got what she deserved and was suspended for a while.

I've read many books but Dancing In My Nuddy Pants was just a book that I could not put down. If you are seeking a hilarious book that you will love then I highly suggest reading this book. Georgia taught me things that I should never do, and so things that I should do. If this sounds interesting you might also want to read the first too, and then you can get this book to resume with the tale of Georgia Nicholson. But don't be sad when it's over because there are 7 books in this series. ... Read more

Product Description
The six-year-old is a complex child, entirely  different from the five-year-old. Though many of the  changes are for the good -- Six is growing more  mature, more independent, more daring and  adventurous -- this is not necessarily an easy time for the  little girl or boy. Relationships with mothers are  troubled -- most of the time Six adores mother,  but whenever things go wrong, it's her fault. It  used to be, at Five, that she was the center of the  child's universe; now, the child is the center of  his own universe.

Parents need the expert  advice of Drs. Ames and Ilg during this difficult  year, to explain parent-child relations,  friendships with peers, what six-year-olds excel at, how  they see the world, what it feels like to be  entering the first grade. Children need patience and  understanding to help make this transition easier. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good classic reference
I have all of these books up to "your six-year-old", and I find them very useful. I look to these to find out if what I notice going on with my child is, indeed, a (usually novel) age-related behavior/thought pattern, etc. and they have been very helpful for this. If you just page thru them, you may think they are a bit dated (the pics especially) but I see this as a good thing. The writers aren't writing from the perspective of the latest fad or "discovery" in studies of children, or just a book of pretty pictures, but are giving information based on years of observation of what children do at different stages. This is why it's useful to me--it's classic, easy-to-read, useful information that usually reassures me that my child is in the same stage of development that many others have passed through, and gives helpful advice for working with your child and easing conflicts. I appreciate that the "techniques" section is not just behavior modification techniques for immediate results (time outs, counting to ten, losing a toy temporarily, etc) but ideas to work WITH your child and understand their motivations. A great addition to your parenting library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relieved
I found this book helpful to me because I am dealing with a six year old. I am 57 and my husband and I adopted this little one when she was only two months old. I raised four children close together but I forgot how a six year old can be so demanding and self centered. The book helped me to realize that she was behaving normally for a six year old and the author provided excellant advice on how to keep my cool in difficult situations. The author gave examples of case studies of other six year olds which helped me to see that I am not alone as a parent dealing with my frustrations. I was doubting my parent skills often. Now I know what is going on in her litte mind. I love her so much and I feel as though God has granted me a second chance at motherhood, and I want to do this right by helping my child to grow into a well adjusted little person. This book has given me the strength and know how to carry on.
I recommend this book to anyone whi is dealing with a little six year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guides Available for Staying Sane
The best advantage in this series of books is that it gives you the assurance your child is not different then the average and that you are not anything wrong. How many times we have seen our kid change from water to wine and think this is the result of something we missed in his education. But no, kids change all the time !
These books are like a roadmap, they let you situate yourself and are more calming than a bottle of Xanax. It is like you are riding a roller coaster (and raising kids is much like it!) with someone telling you there is a loop ahead. At least you get psychologically prepared.

The fact that they are outdated make little difference. It only reflects the fact that nothing better has been written since.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but needs updating
This is a helpful - if a bit outdated - summary of what one can expect from a "typical" six-year-old. The author repeats numerous times that each child is an individual and therefore what is considered "normal" is actually an average of a certain number of children of the same age and cannot be held as a standard that each child must meet or somehow be found wanting.

Please excuse grammar and speling. Not ny speciality.I hate details.I really enjoyed this book because I read it in one sitting. I did get insight into what is "typical" behaviour for a girl 6.5 years old.One example, paraphrased,'kid at this age tend to worry that sonmething bad will happen to one of their parents'.This explains why my daughter started becoming so upset when I would go out. It seemed to come on suddenly leaving me woindering what I had done wrong. Turns out it was not anything I did. I was able to share with her what I read and explain that her feelings are "normal" for her age. If I had not read this I would have wasted time asking her what was wrong with her or looking to blame my wife or me, creating a ure future neurosis of som e kind. My daughter has relaxed since I was able to explain that this is "normal" for some kids her age. My daughter is high maintenance (super sensitive, perfectionist, hyper emotional...).I was worried she was going to get "labeled" because of this, so I started seeking information. This was a good start, but this is not a comprehensive look at the psychology of children. I have had to look at other books, but this is a nice quick insight into a kids inner world.I also highly recomend "When Labels Don't Fit" by Brbra Probst if you're looking for deeper pshycological analysis. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great little book
I admit I bought this book and a few other offerings from Louise Hay at Borders book store with the intention of returning them.I just needed to see them in person to make my decision of which items I wanted.I just didn't have the time to spend in the bookstore.

Oh.I had a gift certificate from Amazon, as well as a gift card for Borders that I could use on Borders.com that pops you into Amazon inventory.

Anyway, sorry for the lengthy intro.I kept browsing through this little book and each time I had a different opinion.Like it, don't, back and forth numerous times.

I decided to order it and I am glad I did!!! I love it now.Good things DO come in small packages!Usually I just spend a few minutes opening it repeatedly in random pages.I intend soon to read through it from begining to end and write the ones that resonate with me into a small journal or notebook seperated into sections so that I may work with affirmations I like.I mean, have the sections be topics. So then as I need them/want to work on attracting love or work on job issues....whatever, I can just pop over to my notebook, skip to the section I desire and find one or two little gems that had resonated with me.If course I will still read this book at random or a few pages a day.Which ever feels right at the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and insightful information
I was desperate for a book on how to deal with bad behaving toddlers one of my neighbors gave me this. I read it pretty quickly and found it intresting but it does not touch base on the items listed on the cover. There is a paragraph on toilet training and really no solid advise on discipline. I wouldn't buy this new if your intrested rent it from your local library.
I've heard great things about Toddler 411 going to read that next!

2-0 out of 5 stars dated and repetitive
Thankfully, I bought this book used for under a dollar because that turned out to be all it's worth. It's repetitive and reflects a dated view of child raising. For example, it discusses classifying toddler personality types based on their physical build (endo, meso and ectomorphs).I was looking for a Wonder Weeks for toddlers and this isn't it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FevMom48
The books in this series by Ames and Ilg are the most valuable resources that pulled me through the early years of parenting! This book accurately describes what's going on for a little person who is one from all different angles -- physically, psycho-logically, socially, and interpersonally. What insight and what great strategy that proves beneficial for both parent and child! The entire series is essential to own!

3-0 out of 5 stars So/So
This book was "okay".Simply stated, if you are looking for validation about your childs' behavior, get this book. It's just a commentary on observations of behaviors vs. in depth explainations about why they behave the way they do and how to truly cope.It was a bit too superficial for me as I was looking for strategies to help with the behaviors not just an overview of what a child of this age does.I found the most useful part the personal stories at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE SERIES for all parents!
GET THIS BOOK and ALL THE OTHERS IN THIS SERIES!! A terrific set of books that will give you an understanding of what to expect developementally at each age. I've been buying these guide books every year for the last nine years and I can't imagine what'd I'd do without them. I've given them to many friends as gifts and loaned out my copies countless times. These books were written years ago and some of the advice and content seems odd in this day and age. (ie. By age six your child should be able to cross the street alone and go to the store by themselves.) That sort of advice I take with a grain of salt but overall these books provide such a great frame of reference as to what your child will be like at each age.I highly recommend them. ... Read more

Product Description
Of the various types of mythological literature, fairy tales are the simplest and purest expressions of the collective unconscious and thus offer the clearest understanding of the basic patterns of the human psyche. Every people or nation has its own way of experiencing this psychic reality, and so a study of the world's fairy tales yields a wealth of insights into the archetypal experiences of humankind.

Perhaps the foremost authority on the psychological interpretation of fairy tales is Marie-Louise von Franz. In this book—originally published asAn Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales —she describes the steps involved in analyzing and illustrates them with a variety of European tales, from "Beauty and the Beast" to "The Robber Bridegroom."

Dr. von Franz begins with a history of the study of fairy tales and the various theories of interpretation. By way of illustration she presents a detailed examination of a simple Grimm's tale, "The Three Feathers," followed by a comprehensive discussion of motifs related to Jung's concept of the shadow, the anima, and the animus. This revised edition has been corrected and updated by the author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marie-Louise and Fairy Tales
I've read a number of ML von Franz's interpretations of fairy tales and I've found them all invaluable. While, as ML von Franz states herself, you don't have to agree with every breakdown or rely upon her interpretations as the absolute truth, the stances she takes are fascinating and offer another view of reality, specifically a window into another way of understanding a great deal of our literary past.

This particular book works as a strong introductory text to the work that Marie-Louise von Franz has done in her break down of fairy tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love how Ms. von Franz
goes behind the everyday view of common things.Long story short, the Jungians think that primitive peoples were "projecting" their own internal states into these stories and thus by dissecting them they reveal insight to problems common to us all.I would recommend her "Psychological Meaning of Redemption Motifs in Fairytales".I would go so far as to suggest that we each have our own fairy tales (our own story) that may bear little resemblance to onlookers. And it is important to keep working on our own story, keep developing it, keep growing and expanding it.Maybe even wind in a princess, a frog, and some elves...Maybe not. When I look back as far as I can see I always tried to wind in God to my story and that story has changed in some ways drastically over time, yet somehow the parts that matter (the interface) seems to stay largely the same. But its important to me that the story goes on. The Gospel According to Me: A heretic finds his way in modernity using Jungian psychology, science, dreams, and, well, the Gospels

5-0 out of 5 stars An important guide to symbolic material.
M.L. von Franz was one of Jung's closest associates and is proclaimed by some to be his intellectual heir. She was a language specialist, in particular ancient languages, and worked with Jung from her early twenties until his death.

Von Franz has the knack of going to the essence of Jungian theory without some of the circumlocution that so many complain of in Jung's collected works.Fairy tales were her forte and she believed by analyzing fairy tales in terms of their collective, not their personal meaning, one would connect with the wisdom of the collective.

This books provides step-by-step instructions for doing fairy tale analysis according to the method of mythological amplification. She also provides examples of her own analysis of fairy tales.

Von Franz believes that all fairy tales are describing one psychic fact--that of the Self. (The Jungian Self includes both the individual self and the collective unconscious). The Self has so much complexity and variation that many different tales are necessary to describe it.

This is an important book that describes some of the basic tenets of Jungian psychology in an easy-to-read form.It is one I return to over and over in my exploration of symbolic material.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start!
I want to second the good review already written and add that the thing about Marie-Louise von Franz is her great readability compared with most of Jung, who can at times be very obtuse. All of von Franz's fairy tale studies are valuable and useful, but for the beginning searcher, this IS a good place to start.Von Franz, "the greatest living heir to C.G. Jung," is down-to-earth in her writing, and her examples of interpretations are always crystal clear and practical. She IS a Jungian, but for her Jung is just a tool that she uses -- she is no slave to a method. She freely admits that any interpretation is just one of many possible ones one might make.Beware! If you like this book and find it useful, you will want to read ALL of her other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction into applying Jungian Psychology
This book by marie-Luise Von Franz provides valuable insight into the varied uses of a Jungain approach to psychology. Interpreting fairy tales provides us with skills and techniques to help interpret our own fairytales, that of our dreams and life stories. Useful for all students of Jungand applicable in our own lives if only for the joy of seeking connectionsand associations in our own experiences. Ideal for dreamers andphilosophers as well as beginner Jungians. ... Read more

Product Description

It is Winter Carnival in Quebec City, bitterly cold and surpassingly beautiful. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache has come not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. But violent death is inescapable, even in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society— where an obsessive historian’s quest for the remains of the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain, ends in murder. Could a secret buried with Champlain for nearly 400 years be so dreadful that someone would kill to protect it?

Although he is supposed to be on leave, Gamache cannot walk away from a crime that threatens to ignite long-smoldering tensions between the English and the French. Meanwhile, he is receiving disquieting letters from the village of Three Pines, where beloved Bistro owner Olivier was recently convicted of murder. “It doesn't make sense,” Olivier’s partner writes every day. “He didn't do it, you know.” As past and present collide in this astonishing novel, Gamache must relive the terrible event of his own past before he can bury his dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Yet
Bury Your Dead is absoulutely the best book I have read in a long, long time. Louise Pennty has woven her heart and soul into this book and it shows on every page. I laughed and cried, became angry with some of the characters and worried about all of them. Thank you Louise Penny for such a wonderful book.

1-0 out of 5 stars clunky writing
The writing always sounds like a bad translation, the psychology is weak, and the plots are creaky in the Armand Gamache series.I don't recommend them at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But IMHO, Read Brutal Telling First
Read Ms. Penny's entire 3 Pines series & loved it.However, this book is not my fave as it comes across like reading a writer's research material.A little heavy on the history angle especially when Champlain's body-- (Read book's front matter after you've read conclusion).

I'm glad I read Brutal Telling first for besides it being the best in this series IMHO,it sets up some of the story in Bury Your Dead.

Bury Your Dead could be a bit shorter by easing up on the research, history lesson.Still worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the series, so far
Having read all the rest of the 'Three Pines' mystery series so far, this is the best in my opinion. All are well-written, but this one had some very complex psychological issues that added additional nuances to the characters. The re-opening of a mystery from the prior book, 'The Brutal Telling', a police action gone horrbily wrong, recuperation from both physical and psychological scars, and the main mystery of the burial place of Samuel de Champlain are all woven together in this enjoyable book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Three Pines revisited
In keeping with my usual personal policy, I will skip a synopsis of this book; I assume readers of this review will have picked that up from the numerous reviews elsewhere. This, then, is just my opinion.

I've been a big fan of Louise Penny since her first book, Still Life, which I adored.I've read every installment in the series and enjoyed all of them with a particular fondness for last year's The Brutal Telling.

In this sixth outing starring Surete de Quebec Inspector Armand Gamache the author undertakes something I don't think I've seen done in a mystery novel before:the intertwining of three distinctively different stories. And I'm not sure I really want to see it done again...

Although she did this exceedingly well, I found it somewhat distracting.Interestingly, this is the October choice of my online book group and we don't seem to have focused on the same story line, some of us preferring one over the other and others the third. However, I wouldn't for a minute consider not reading her next book -- I am simply too invested in Gamache and the residents of Three Pines, all of whom have such distinctive personalities, to walk away from them any time soon.Or ever, for that matter.

A word of warning:readers absolutely MUST read The Brutal Telling before reading Bury Your Dead.Although there are enough of the main points given in this book to cover the highlights of the previous installment, you will never get the full import of what the author has done in book six without a fuller understanding of the background.
