An important and informing book about the Zapatista uprising
Reading the letters and communiques of Marcos contained in Shadows of Tender Fury made me feel incredibly sympathetic for the indigenous people of Chiapas. I felt outraged at the injustice done to them by the Mexican government and the rich ranchers in the area. I found Marcos' tone to be comical despite the dreadful situations he was writing about. For instance, he writes the elaborate PS's and rambles about things with little relevance and tells stories about animals, etc. This gives some lightness to the very heavy subject matter addressed in the book and adds some comic relief. I also thought it was kind of him to respond to everyone who wrote to him, even if they were small children. By the end of the book I liked Marcos' personality from what I glimpsed of it in his tone, and I was impressed at the noble cause he had taken on.

The one problem I had with this book is not a fault of the writer's but of the editor's. Marcos' letters are repetitive and long, and I feel that much could have been cut out and Shadows of Tender Fury would still be a good book that encompassed most of Marcos' letters and ideas. However, with so much repetition the book starts to get tedious. Some heavy editing would have made a big difference.

In general I think that Shadows of Tender Fury is an important contribution to Latin American literature because it details the fight of the Zapatistas and chronicles their events. It also draws support from a much larger community, for I read it in the northeastern US although it is occurring in southeastern Mexico. I did not know very much about the indigenous fight before reading this book so I am glad I did and recommend it to others.

Great photos, but...
The photos of the cakes are magnificent. However, I have not found anything really new in terms of techniques (other than using corn syrup instead of piping gel for a lake which is a minor thing, every difference in procedures gave a similar result to another procedure seen elsewhere), and all those techniques have been better explained elsewhere (for example International School of Sugarcraft, volumes 2 and 3). For achieving the look of the cakes, lots of specialized equipment is needed, and molds & textured rolling pins, etc. are used for practically everything. While I agree that a cake can look fantastic decorated in this way (as all the cakes in the book indeed do), and that turning out swans using a mold is much faster than modeling them by hand (I've done both, and detailed work by hand with all the feathers attached one by one is a real pain), there really isn't much there.

So overall book has really stunning photos, but no innovative techniques and designs themselves are really not that special, other than the fact that most of the cakes are huge. Part on sugar flowers is minimal (for those interested in sugar flowers, Alan Dunn's books have fantastic flowers and good explanations how to make them), majority of the book is on covering cakes with patterned sugarpaste and/or fabric effects in sugarpaste. All the techniques on use of molds, textured rolling pins, imprint mats, etc. are covered either in International School of Sugarcraft, volumes 2 and 3, or Essential Cake Decorating, or a little booklet by Stephen Benison on patterned sugarpaste. Since I already have a large cake decorating library, this was not worth the money. Also, some techniques are much, much easier to do following the instructions in International School of Sugarcraft, such as using patchwork or other cutters for textured (bas relief) flowers on cakes, rather than outlining them on covered cake, and then cutting and partially lifting them with a knife for "natural" look.

beautiful book
This is a great piece of sugar artistry. It includes full color photographs with detailed instructions for each project.The artists know what they are talking about. Theyhave a grasp of what can be done with sugar. I highly recomend this book for the professionl cake decorator or for the novice.

This is a very beautiful book with many photos of awe-inspiring cakes and sugar work.There are quite a few recipes for everything from the cakes to the fondants and modeling sugars used to decorate them.The book includes step-by-step instructions for most, if not all, of the decorations used on the cakes.(Review actually written by Alan's wife.) ... No must-have but this one!

The best book on Hedge Funds I've ever read
I first saw this book by chance in the Library of Congress. After some minutes I found it so comprehensive and educative I fell in love with it! The book solves central problems regarding risk measuring and portfolio optimization with alternative investments, everything explained clearly in the chapters, supported with extensive mathematical appendices. A jewel for all professionals in the hedge fund industry, specially for quant researchers.
