Excerpt: Sir John Frank Charles Kingman, a mathematician, was born on 28 August 1939 in Beckenham, Kent. He was N. M. Rothschild and Sons Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the Isaac Newton Institute at the University of Cambridge from 2001 until 2006, when he was succeeded by Sir David Wallace. He is famous for developing the mathematics of the coalescent, a theoretical model of inheritance, which is fundamental to modern population genetics. Though his grandfather was a coal miner, his father, who had obtained a Ph.D from Bristol University, held a government scientific post where he married John's mother Maud Elsie Harley who came from a London family. John grew up in London, attending Christ's College school Finchley, eventually being awarded a scholarship to read mathematics at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1956. On graduating in 1960, he began work on his PhD under the supervision of Peter Whittle, studying queueing theory, Markov chains and regenerative phenomena. A year later, Whittle left Cambridge for the University of Manchester, and, rather than follow him there, Kingman moved instead to Oxford where he resumed his work under David Kendall. After another year, Kendall was appointed to a professorship at Cambridge and so Kingman returned to the University. He returned, however, as a member of the teaching staff (and a Fellow of Pembroke College) and never completed his PhD. He married Valerie Cromwell, with whom he has two children, in 1964. In 1965, he took up the post of Reader at the University of Sussex where she was teaching, and was elected Professor of Mathematics and Statistics the next year...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3201866 ... Product Description
In Work Song tensions between master architect and Frank Lloyd Wright and his tempestuous relationships are explored in this uniquely prismatic view of one of the great architects of the modern era. Over the course of a 70-year career, Wright brought a radical approach to architecture, creating a new vision of what a building should and could be. Interior and exterior spaces related both to each other, their natural environment, and to the people who moved between, and lived within them. He created some of the most monumental and intimate spaces in America, designing everything from banks and office buildings to churches, a filling-station, and a beer garden. His masterpieces include the house Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wright once remarked : I ve been accused of saying I was the greatest architect in the world, and if I said so, I don t think it would be very arrogant, because I don t believe there are many great architects if any. For 500 years what we call architecture has been phony. But in contrast to the beauty and harmony of his buildings, Wright himself could be cruel and violent. His private life was marked by financial and emotional turmoil, and, with the brutal slaying of his wife, her children, and other members of the household, appalling tragedy. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Caradog "Crag" Jones (born 1962) is a noted Welsh climber. Whilst he has achieved a number of firsts on peaks around the world, he is most well-known for being the first Welshman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, a feat he achieved on 23 May 1995, at the age of 33. As such he was the 724th climber to reach the summit. The final ascent was made with Michael Knakkergaard-Jorgensen, the first Dane to the summit. At 33, Jones was the same age as Edmund Hillary when he reached the summit, and indeed this was achieved virtually 32 years on to the day. Jones was born and bred in Pontrhydfendigaid, a village near Tregaron, Ceredigion, in mid-Wales. He has admitted that as a boy he was inspired by the exploits of the early Everest pioneers, whom he read about because they undertook much of their pre-expedition training in Snowdonia. Jones and Jorgensen were part of a larger world team, led by Henry Todd of the UK, and using Himalayan guides. Other members of the team were Paul Deegan (UK), Graham Ratcliffe (UK), Sean Smith (UK), Anatoli Boukreev (Kazakhstan), Mozart Catao (Brazil), Nicolas Chappaz (France), Waldemar Niclevicz (Brazil), Ryszard Pawlowski (Poland) and Nikolai Sitnikov (Russia). The first of the team to reach the summit was Ryszard Pawlowski, on 12 May, other groups following on 14 May and 17 May. Jones and Jorgensen formed the last group, reaching the summit on the 23rd May. The team took the northern route (North Col - North East Ridge) following that of the former fatal expedition of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine in 1924, and their climb was equally plagued by poor weather. In Mrs. Warren's Profession, Arms and the Man, Candida, and Man and Superman, George Bernard Shaw satirizes society, military heroism, marriage, and the pursuit of man by woman. From a social, literary, and theatrical standpoint, these four plays are among the foremost dramas of the age-as intellectually stimulating as they are humorous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plays by George Bernard Shaw
I bought this book because I wanted to read 'Mrs. Warren's Profession'.I've an actress in the family and she is playing the part of Vivie, Mrs. Warren's daughter.

I was unfamiliar with the play, and was interested in reading it.I found it amazing that for the era in which it was written, it proselytized that a woman could be happier in a career she liked than being married!

The play is well worth reading, giving an insight into how people lived and behaved at that time.

There are four plays in the book: Arms and the Man, Candida, Man and Superman, and Mrs Warren's Profession. The plays are different, all are interesting.

I recommend it.It's a paperback and easy to carry around.

5-0 out of 5 stars G.B. Shaw collection
Plays: Man & Superman; Candida; Arms & the Man; Mrs Warren's Profession [Signet Classics]

Well worth the purchase and just what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of GBS
This should be required reading just for the "Don Juan in Hell" act of Man and Superman --an excerpt"Your friends are all the dullest dogs I know. They are not beautiful: they are only decorated. They are not clean: they are only shaved and starched. They are not dignified: they are only fashionably dressed. They are not educated: they are only college passmen. They are not religious: they are only pewrenters. They are not moral: they are only conventional. They are not virtuous: they are only cowardly...."

One of my science teachers recited this famous speech in the lab one day, just to show off, and I started appreciating Shaw. Funny thing is that of all the playwrights, GBS is the best just to read. Except for Pygmalion and maybe Arms and the Man, most of Shaw's plays are too "talky" to stage well, but read like short stories. If you haven't read them, you are in for a treat.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Shaw Overview
This would be an excellent collection to have for anyone looking for a taste of Shaw's basic philosophies about socialism--and of course, a good way of finding out how his writing suits you.

Some thought provokingsocial statements are made in all four plays, though some of the prefacesmight be more informative about the author than the plays themselves. Greatwitticisms and depsite the sometimes heavy philosophy, the reading is lightand quick. The last play, Man And Superman, perhaps his most significantplay in terms of philosophy, pure and simple, would be fun reading but thesocialist's handbook given at the end would definitely not be everyone'scup of tea, unless they're philosophy students. This can be skipped withoutspoiling the play though, which contains some of the most excellentdialogue I've come across in a play with philosophical overtones.

AllOscar Wilde and Chesterton lovers would appreciate the epigrams and thewitty one-liners. If for nothing else, Shaw is worth reading for his lovelystyle of execution, the flowing conversations and some uncanny insight. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable
I really can't tell you if this is a collection of good stories or not.Between the horrific grammar and punctuation abuse, the author sandwiches attention deficit disorder addled writing. Not a single page is without a veritable litany of errors. The prose is such an editor's nightmare that it is obvious that any blue pencil nearing it broke down in terror and fled.Is English even the author's primary language?Parts of this book read as if it were translated from Chinese to English by a personfluent in neither. The selection's header on the Amazon.com page lists six editors. One of the editors listed isDavid Drake."Say it ain't so, Joe."How is that possible?

The list of errors in this book is impressive. The author uses unclear antecedents, subject verb disagreements, and run on (and on and on) sentences, nay paragraphs.Tense conflicts, split infinitives, and incomplete sentences proliferate as if they were his only tools .His misuse of punctuation is truly remarkable. Each page looks as if he loaded a blunderbuss full of commas and periods and then blasted the words into oblivion.

In some realms, this level of grammatical execution (and I do mean execution) would be considered torture to the reader. It would demand punishment of the author by extensive prison terms and endless viewings of The Jerry Springer Show.Wait! That's it.That must be where the author learned to speak, read, and write English.Since that is obviously the case, I apologize for my critique. For if that is the source of his understanding of English, then this tome is comparable to the works of William Shakespeare in its poignant existence.

I would suggest the author complete a public school level grammar course, or hire an editor who has, before attempting further literary work.

I regret having purchased this entire series before reading a sample.I trusted the references to David Drake's works and to Mr. Drake being listed as an editor. In summation, while the author honors the milieu by his service and intent, he diminishes the universe of Hammer's Slammers with his poor writing. ... From the author: Objective: Several investigators have questioned the validity of the DSM-IV Alcohol Use Disorders criteria for diagnosing alcohol use problems among teenagers, with specific concerns about their utility across different subgroups. In the current study, we examined whether particular racial/ethnic or gender subgroups varied in the incidence and onset age of Alcohol Use Disorder symptoms, Method: Members of a sample composed of 1,045 community-dwelling "drinkers" (59.4% male; 13.8% black, 21.2% foreign-born Hispanic, 30.7% U.S.-born Hispanic and 33.6% non-Hispanic white) were interviewed retrospectively using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. The first occurrence of each DSM-IV symptom in a participant was examined by race/ethnicity and gender. Discrete-time event history analysis compared onset patterns from ages 14 through 20 years. Results: The cumulative incidence of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependence diagnoses, as well as one alcohol abuse symptom and four dependence symptoms, varied by race/ethnicity. The incidence of both diagnoses, as well as two alcohol abuse symptoms, varied by gender. Event history analysis revealed no significant subgroup variation in first onset patterns for only three of the eleven symptoms. Racial/ethnic variation, but not gender variation, was significant for three symptoms, and both racial/ethnic variation and gender variation was significant for the remaining five symptoms. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that most of the DSM-IV Alcohol Use Disorder symptoms, when applied to adolescents, demonstrate significant subgroup variation in incidence and onset age patterns. These results speak to the urgent need for additional research concerning the nosology and diagnosis of alcohol use problems among younger drinkers, especially among specific racial/ethnic and gender subgroups.

3-0 out of 5 stars A solid textbook
This is a well written and clearly organized book on communication in organizational settings. It includes the necessary primers of organizational theory to allow the student reader enough background to learn about and discuss the topic without any prerequisite reading. This is an appropriate text for a graduate level course in the title subject or as a reference for related courses

5-0 out of 5 stars Organizational Communication: Balancing Creativity and Constraint
Love this book.It was easy to use to study and go back to find terms. It was up to date and used examples that anyone could relate to. It was easy to follow along and provided a lot of helpful information.I won't be reselling this book.I know I can refer to this book again and again out there in the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars communication textbook
Everything came in a reasonable amount of time and it was described exactly as I received it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding
I am a graphic design professional and the daily application, negotiation and consideration of 'communication' in all of its forms impacts my work, and this is mostly referring to the communication that occurs between people and societies, over and above that of 'designed communication' through the products of a graphic design project. I commenced a Masters Degree in Organisational and Professional Communication, and found that this text was far superior to everything I was presented in the degree... this book crystalises every pivotal concept, in clear, accessible, and credible language... but most of all bridges the gap between academia and actual practice. I'm so thrilled with this book. It's like a bible to everything that matters... understanding more about the nature of human beings and relationships in all aspects of modern life. I would recommend this book to literally anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Org Comm Understandable
I am a communication graduate student, so I've read a lot of organization communication texts and readers. I've read my Weick, my Mumby, my Deetz, my Jablin, my Putnam & my Poole. While I would never suggest that anyone ever forgo reading primary sources, who can argue that sometimes we just lack the time to read everything we would like to? That is where this book comes in.

This Eisenberg & Goodall book is not just an average review of the major concepts, themes and theories in organizational communication. It covers the concepts of org comm in more detail than most texts do. The authors also are very aware of the changes and challenges to organizations in the contemporary world, and included excellent chapters on globalization, outsourcing, etc.

Finally, Eisenberg & Goodall wrote this text interactively. It is the most dialogical of all the org comm texts I've read. This stimulates not just the memorization of fact, but deep-rooted thinking and contemplation.

If you do not know where to start when you look at the expansive landscape of organizational communication, this is THE place to start. After a thorough reflective reading of Eisenberg and Goodall, you will definately have a firm foundation to read the primary sources you want. ... Read more
