Product Description

"Superficial views of the work of Christ produce superficial human lives." Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Ever since his first sermon in 1925, Martyn Lloyd-Jones consistently emphasized the significance of Christ's sacrifice for our sake.

This new collection of sermons reveals this theme in Lloyd-Jones' classic expository style, showing his gift for combining a warm, personal devotion to Jesus Christ with deep theological insight. His grasp of Scripture still causes the maturest believer to ponder, yet he brings a simplicity of thought to his preaching that even a child can understand and enjoy.

The Cross explains how Christ's crucifixion works for our redemption, and why this even is the cornerstone of the Christian life.

From one of this century's greatest preachers, excellent reading for ministers and anyone seeking a closer walk with Christ. Meditative, easily understandable, and biblically sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Important
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was one of the foremost preachers of the 20th Century. He preached throughout the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as serving for 25 years as minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones is of the Jonathan Edwards school, and is widely regarded as one of the most important evangelical figures of the 20th century. His influence is felt today through the preaching, teaching, and writing of the likes of Tim Keller and John Piper. The Cross is a collection sermon transcriptions, which were delivered in Westminster in the Autumn of 1963.

There are nine sermons in the series, all on Galatians 6:14:

God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world.

It is remarkable that Lloyd-Jones, or as he is often fondly referred to, the Doctor, weaned 9 sermons from one verse. It would appear, though, upon finishing the book, that he could have continued for longer. His exposition is exceptional in its depth and breadth. His preaching is a combination of warmth and weight. The first chapter is probably the most moving expression of the Gospel I have heard or read in a long time. His preaching (despite this being in written form) was clearly emotive, cutting to the core of one's heart. He preaches Christ crucified, he preaches Christ glorified, and he preaches that we have no other boast. None!

However, there is not merely emotion to be found in this volume. There is deep Gospel truth being explained on every page. Lloyd-Jones shows the reader how the Cross is the central event of history. He makes clear how the Cross reveals us, the human race, as we really are. It shows us ourselves. The preaching is absolutely grounded in the Bible, also. Anecdotal examples are utilised, but not central. Hymns are quoted regularly, but as illustrations of what the Word says. The book explains clearly and powerfully, significance of the Cross, and the meaning it has for our lives. The quote of the back cover sums things up nicely;

Superficial views of the work of Christ produce superficial human lives.

The message contained in these pages is incredibly important and incredibly powerful and compelling. I cannot recommend it enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cross: God's Way of Salvation
This book is about the cross by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-jones.
I think if you read this book, you can really understand the profound meaning of the cross and why Jesus, who is Son of God, should die. I am sure of that.

On top of that, I realized the meaning of the prayer, and what's wrong with my prayer.

I strongly recommend this book to you.

thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars such wonderful insight
I started reading this book because a pastor friend of mine had suggested it to me when I inquired about a good book on the cross. I have to say that this book has truly revolutionized my understanding of Christ's sacrifice on my behalf, and what the cross really means. There is hardly one page in the book that I have not underlined and written in the margins. I wholeheartedly recommend Martyn Lloyd-Jones' book "The Cross" for all those who want a deeper understanding of this most crucial matter. I also recommend "The Cross of Christ" By John Stott for further study. God be with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awesome !
This most excellent book consists of a series of sermons by Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones which were preached in Westminster Chapel, London, during the Autumn of 1963.

Readers of this awesome work cannot fail to be moved by the manner in which this subject is approached. The writer being recognised by many as perhaps one of the greatest preachers of the 20th Century.

The basis of this book is the words written through the Apostle Paul in the New Testament book of Galatians in chapter 6;verse 14;-
"God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ..."

The message of Salvation being expounded through the full gospel message of 'Christ crucified'. A message that will hold you throughout this book.

As I read I can but count it loss that I was never able to hear the learned author preach, especially in these days where the central truth of the Gospel is so often ignored amidst the perilous times now facing the World as outlined in Scripture pertaining to the last days.

One particularly moving aspect of this book is that during the course of these sermons in 1963, US President Kennedy was assassinated.

Clearly shocked and saddened by the tragic death of President Kennedy, the writer mentions his death during his preaching. We are left in no doubt as to the uncertainty of this physical life, it's transiency and our inability to save ourselves.

The meticulous study together with the fervent depth of the message provides a message that is extremely powerful. We are left in no doubt as to the importance of Salvation and it's absolute necessity for us all.

Many references are made, not least the glaring parallel between Christ's sacrifice on the Cross and the Old Testament Passover where the Jewish people were spared whilst the first born of the Egyptians were killed.

The blood of a pure, unblemished lamb having been painted on the posts and lintels of the Israelites' doors causing death to pass over them. The shedding of Jesus Christ's blood on the cross at Calvary being the New Covenant, whereby Jesus Himself is the pure, unblemished Lamb of God which now takes away the sin of the entire World, for those who believe in Him.

If you read just one book apart from the Bible about Jesus and Salvation, let it be this one. Highly, highly recommended.

Thanks for listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giving worries over to God
I read this book when a life threatening illness faced me. Nothing can replace the Bible, but D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones used the Bible, Philippians, in showing me how to place my complete trust in Jehovah God to face any trial. He is by far my favorite read for spiritual application in today's world. ... Read more

Product Description

This collection of fifteen original essays offers new perspectives on armed conflict as a central aspect of science fiction and fantasy writing. Looking past the superficial conventions associated with ray guns and aliens, swords and sorcerers, the contributors show how writers in the genre today are not so much imagining war more fully as they are completely re-imagining it. Science fiction and fantasy writing is no longer mired in epic or chivalric models but is responding to new and more complex "real-world" motivations for armed aggression: advances in weaponry, shifts in the theaters of war, and changes in battlefield conditions.

Most of the papers were presented at the annual J. Lloyd Eaton Conference on Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, the field's most prestigious international gathering. The trend throughout the book is away from critical interest in stories of spatial or territorial conquest and toward works that deal with topics related to wars of temporal logistics and the internationalization of the combat zone, including urban street violence, gender conflicts, and resistance to runaway technology. The essays range from studies of the semantics and linguistics of warfare in science fiction to a critique of Osip Senkovsky's Fantastic Journeys of Baron Brambeus; from writer Joe Haldeman's assessment of the impact of his Vietnam experiences on his fiction to inquiries into a shared author/reader agenda in novels concerning potential mass destruction, including Stephen King's Dead Zone and M. J. Engh's Arslan. The collection also charts new directions in writing, such as the anti-apocalyptic science fiction of Samuel R. Delany, and embraces new modes of presentation, particularly computer animation and the bande dessinee, or illustrated narrative, as exemplified by French novelist Phillippe Druillet's La Nuit. Musician Bob Marley, film actor/directors Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Lee, and the cyberpunk film classics Terminator and the Road Warrior series are among other topics discussed.

Together, the essays reinforce the editors' contention that the true function of these fantasies and science fictions is neither nostalgia nor fancy, but analysis. The contributors treat the texts they examine as a means not of playing war games but of understanding the role of war in the present and the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars They killed a perfectly good tree for this?
From the introduction:

" . . . casual readers automatic association of SF with warefare and armed conquest -- and in extreme cases with militaristic jingoism, such as that in Robert Heinlein's notorious Starship
Troopers."

1) Generally Science Fiction is associated speculation about the future, space travel and aliens.

Except of course in the minds of pretentious editors.

2) Jingoism, according to Websters, "extreme chauvinism or nationalism . . .belligerent foreign policy" Since Starship Troopers details the *defense* of earth against attack I'm not sure how this is Jingoistic.

3) "Robert Heinlein's notorious Starship Troopers"- - - *Notorious*!?

There is *one* excellent article by Joe Haldeman in this book. (Vietnam and other Alien Worlds)Brilliantly crafted, clear concise . . . Of course Professor Haldeman has an unfair advantage over the rest of the contributors in this book. He is a professional writer and his editors expect results.

If you expect anything about Science or warfare or the future you will be sadly disappointed. This book (excepting Professor Haldeman's essay) is an utterly boring, pretentious, intellectual
wasteland, completely devoid of the slightest bit of imagination, information or originality. ... Read more

Product Description

Gluttony and starvation, pleasure and pain, growth and decay. These and other extremes of our condition related to food, though all but banned from the "civilized" tables of mainstream fiction, are ideal topics for the "undomesticated," free-roaming modes of fantasy.

As acts and ideas, food and eating are fundamental to all that makes us human and dominate our symbolic realms of art, literature, and cuisine. These essays show us the power of speculative modes of fiction to help us look anew at prehistorical and psychomythical attitudes toward food and eating; historical Western-cultural attitudes toward the material fact of food and the necessity of eating; and the relationship between attitudes toward food and how, how much, when, and where we eat.

The contributors come from a variety of backgrounds, including anthropology, film, and French, Russian, English, and medieval literature. Ranging in their focus from shamans to cannibals, utopias to social Darwinism, muscle magazines to supermarket tabloids, the contributors discuss the theory and practice of science fictional eating; the dialectic, at the level of eating, between individual needs and collective norms; and the ways that eating habits and the availability and choice of food serve to contextualize and demarcate modern fictional genres. In addition to discussing such writers as C. S. Lewis, Stephen King, Octavia Butler, Jonathan Swift, and Anne Rice, the contributors also consider such films as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast.

Product Description

The modern marketplace of science fiction, and the relationship between art, culture, and commerce as reflected in works of science fiction, are the concerns of these original essays. The contributors, all of whom are science fiction writers, editors, or critics, offer a wealth of new perspectives and insights on the forces that both drive and hinder creativity and its commodification.

Many of the essays look at how the market constrains a writer's aesthetic and financial development, how changing perceptions of the science fiction audience are "distorting the product," how writers can and must persevere against the problems facing them, and how the market, as a literature-generating machine out of control, has both its down- and upsides.

Through case studies, other contributors relate science fiction to other forms of "underground" literature, consider the continual cycle of illegitimate art replacing legitimate art, look at young readers of science fiction, chart the rising and falling "stock" of science fiction writers' reputations, and consider the influence of editors on a writer's work.

Finally, in looking at science fiction and market realities in other countries and other media, the contributors examine American and British science fiction in the context of the two countries' different histories and market conditions, Russian science fiction and the collapse of the Soviet Union, independent and mass-market science fiction film and video, the opening up of the comic book market, and interactive computer games.

Product Description

These nineteen original essays seek to recontextualize the subject of immortality, examining its influence as an ancient human aspiration while at the same time considering new scientific advances and their impact on life and literature. Grouped in three broad categories, the essays provide key information about and concepts of immortality, examine science fiction stories and scientific research to consider the prospects and possible effects of achieving immortality, and discuss immortality and life extension as literary themes. The topics the essays focus on, as well as the perspectives of the contributors, range widely: genetics, cryonics, Marxism, Darwinism, cyberspace, feminist writing, religion, Italian science fiction, film, children's literature, video games, and comic books.

A variety of articles of criticism show up here, of various length and dryness, but most are rather interseting, drawing on ancient mythology or even biblical mythology to prove a point. Product Description
The inspiration for this book can be found in the question posed in its subtitle. Aiming to define a new way of grasping the concept of reality, EXTRA plays with the idea that it is never really grasped. In a new realm of gliding over, through and between the surfaces of reality, art takes on diverse forms to reveal the extreme elasticity of the real. Twentyeight artists have come together to graft their layers onto reality pending its collapse such as Olaf Breuning, Wim Delvoye, Fischli & Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Gelatin, Lori Hersberger, Christian Jankowski, Ugo Rondinone with John Giorno and Urs Fischer, Jim Shaw, Olav Westphalen and Erwin Wurm. Each artist has contributed an eight to ten page original visual essay. Collaborating in this drive to expose the depth and complexity of reality are critics, curators and physicists. David Deutsch and Seth Lloyd, quantum physicists, deliver a passionate round of "brain tennis" in their correspondence regarding the concept of multiple universes. The ephemeral texts of Martin Tupper appear throughout as nonsensical transmissions from another reality. Art critic Bob Nickas, along with several of the artists, round out and complete this multilayered collaboration.Edited by Marc-Olivier Wahler.~Essays by Bob Nickas, David Deutsch, Seth Lloyd and Martin Tupper. ~Foreword by Dieter von Graffenried.Flexi-bound, 6.25 x 8.25 in./440 pgs / 340 color 45 BW0 duotone 0 ~ Item D20286 ... Excerpt: Madonna (born Madonna Louise Ciccone; August 16, 1958) is an American recording artist, actress and entrepreneur. Born in Bay City, Michigan, and raised in Rochester Hills, Michigan, she moved to New York City in 1977, for a career in modern dance. After performing as a member of the pop groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she released her debut album, Madonna, in 1983 on Sire Records. A series of hit singles from her next studio albums, Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986), established her as a pop icon. She pushed the boundaries of lyrical content in mainstream popular music and imagery in her music videos, which became a fixture on MTV. Her recognition was further raised by the film Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) which was widely seen as a Madonna vehicle despite her not playing the lead. Utilizing religious imagery in her fourth studio album Like a Prayer (1989), Madonna was praised by critics for her diverse musical productions while at the same time religious conservatives and the Vatican criticized her. In 1992, Madonna founded the Maverick corporation as a joint venture with Time Warner. The same year, she incorporated sexually explicit material in her work, wit...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=142056 ... Read more

Product Description

The impetus behind this collection of original essays is the tension between the aesthetic emphasis on stylistics in science fiction and fantasy writing and the critical limitations imposed by prevailing literary theory. From a variety of perspectives, the contributors show how a new, or expanded, set of methods and models can enrich critical exchange within the genre and between it and other types of fiction.

The focus of the book is not entirely on critical restraints but also on the genre's robustly subversive, creative drive--its unwillingness or inability to pause for critical validation. The essays examine the proliferation of stylistic acts and experiments in science fiction and fantasy writing as assess the genre's revolutionary qualities: its reordering of narrative priorities, inversion of consecrated categories, and elevation of "minor" devices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pieces of your brain
This book, although now quite dated serves a good portion of food for your brain. Essasys look at different aspects of science fiction from writing technique, story telling and at a few unknown authors.

I usually find most theory books dull, and a chore to read through. But as I am an avid Science Fiction reader I found almost all the essays approachable. Many books I've read were discussed and so opened new doors to me for re-reading them. Discussing Science Fiction in a literary fashion should help to promote the cause that Science Fiction is real fiction.

Work such as the creation of new words in British Science fiction, the role of Utopia, and so on. Each is written by a different author and are usually well footnoted and researched.

If you're a Science Fiction fan, but don't enjoy reading theory books, this one might surprise you. ... Read more
