Editorial Review Product Description "Superficial views of the work of Christ produce superficial human lives." Martyn Lloyd-Jones Ever since his first sermon in 1925, Martyn Lloyd-Jones consistently emphasized the significance of Christ's sacrifice for our sake. This new collection of sermons reveals this theme in Lloyd-Jones' classic expository style, showing his gift for combining a warm, personal devotion to Jesus Christ with deep theological insight. His grasp of Scripture still causes the maturest believer to ponder, yet he brings a simplicity of thought to his preaching that even a child can understand and enjoy. The Cross explains how Christ's crucifixion works for our redemption, and why this even is the cornerstone of the Christian life. From one of this century's greatest preachers, excellent reading for ministers and anyone seeking a closer walk with Christ. Meditative, easily understandable, and biblically sound. Powerful and Important
The Cross: God's Way of Salvation
such wonderful insight
Absolutely awesome ! Readers of this awesome work cannot fail to be moved by the manner in which this subject is approached. The writer being recognised by many as perhaps one of the greatest preachers of the 20th Century. The basis of this book is the words written through the Apostle Paul in the New Testament book of Galatians in chapter 6;verse 14;- The message of Salvation being expounded through the full gospel message of 'Christ crucified'. A message that will hold you throughout this book. As I read I can but count it loss that I was never able to hear the learned author preach, especially in these days where the central truth of the Gospel is so often ignored amidst the perilous times now facing the World as outlined in Scripture pertaining to the last days. One particularly moving aspect of this book is that during the course of these sermons in 1963, US President Kennedy was assassinated. Clearly shocked and saddened by the tragic death of President Kennedy, the writer mentions his death during his preaching. We are left in no doubt as to the uncertainty of this physical life, it's transiency and our inability to save ourselves. The meticulous study together with the fervent depth of the message provides a message that is extremely powerful. We are left in no doubt as to the importance of Salvation and it's absolute necessity for us all. Many references are made, not least the glaring parallel between Christ's sacrifice on the Cross and the Old Testament Passover where the Jewish people were spared whilst the first born of the Egyptians were killed. The blood of a pure, unblemished lamb having been painted on the posts and lintels of the Israelites' doors causing death to pass over them. The shedding of Jesus Christ's blood on the cross at Calvary being the New Covenant, whereby Jesus Himself is the pure, unblemished Lamb of God which now takes away the sin of the entire World, for those who believe in Him. If you read just one book apart from the Bible about Jesus and Salvation, let it be this one. Highly, highly recommended. Thanks for listening.

Editorial Review Product Description Most of the papers were presented at the annual J. Lloyd Eaton Conference on Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, the field's most prestigious international gathering. The trend throughout the book is away from critical interest in stories of spatial or territorial conquest and toward works that deal with topics related to wars of temporal logistics and the internationalization of the combat zone, including urban street violence, gender conflicts, and resistance to runaway technology. The essays range from studies of the semantics and linguistics of warfare in science fiction to a critique of Osip Senkovsky's Fantastic Journeys of Baron Brambeus; from writer Joe Haldeman's assessment of the impact of his Vietnam experiences on his fiction to inquiries into a shared author/reader agenda in novels concerning potential mass destruction, including Stephen King's Dead Zone and M. J. Engh's Arslan. The collection also charts new directions in writing, such as the anti-apocalyptic science fiction of Samuel R. Delany, and embraces new modes of presentation, particularly computer animation and the bande dessinee, or illustrated narrative, as exemplified by French novelist Phillippe Druillet's La Nuit. Musician Bob Marley, film actor/directors Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Lee, and the cyberpunk film classics Terminator and the Road Warrior series are among other topics discussed. Together, the essays reinforce the editors' contention that the true function of these fantasies and science fictions is neither nostalgia nor fancy, but analysis. The contributors treat the texts they examine as a means not of playing war games but of understanding the role of war in the present and the future. Customer Reviews (1)
They killed a perfectly good tree for this? " . . . casual readers automatic association of SF with warefare and armed conquest -- and in extreme cases with militaristic jingoism, such as that in Robert Heinlein's notorious Starship 1) Generally Science Fiction is associated speculation about the future, space travel and aliens. Except of course in the minds of pretentious editors. 2) Jingoism, according to Websters, "extreme chauvinism or nationalism . . .belligerent foreign policy" Since Starship Troopers details the *defense* of earth against attack I'm not sure how this is Jingoistic. 3) "Robert Heinlein's notorious Starship Troopers"- - - *Notorious*!? There is *one* excellent article by Joe Haldeman in this book. (Vietnam and other Alien Worlds)Brilliantly crafted, clear concise . . . Of course Professor Haldeman has an unfair advantage over the rest of the contributors in this book. He is a professional writer and his editors expect results. If you expect anything about Science or warfare or the future you will be sadly disappointed. This book (excepting Professor Haldeman's essay) is an utterly boring, pretentious, intellectual |

Editorial Review Product Description As acts and ideas, food and eating are fundamental to all that makes us human and dominate our symbolic realms of art, literature, and cuisine. These essays show us the power of speculative modes of fiction to help us look anew at prehistorical and psychomythical attitudes toward food and eating; historical Western-cultural attitudes toward the material fact of food and the necessity of eating; and the relationship between attitudes toward food and how, how much, when, and where we eat. The contributors come from a variety of backgrounds, including anthropology, film, and French, Russian, English, and medieval literature. Ranging in their focus from shamans to cannibals, utopias to social Darwinism, muscle magazines to supermarket tabloids, the contributors discuss the theory and practice of science fictional eating; the dialectic, at the level of eating, between individual needs and collective norms; and the ways that eating habits and the availability and choice of food serve to contextualize and demarcate modern fictional genres. In addition to discussing such writers as C. S. Lewis, Stephen King, Octavia Butler, Jonathan Swift, and Anne Rice, the contributors also consider such films as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast. |

Editorial Review Product Description Many of the essays look at how the market constrains a writer's aesthetic and financial development, how changing perceptions of the science fiction audience are "distorting the product," how writers can and must persevere against the problems facing them, and how the market, as a literature-generating machine out of control, has both its down- and upsides. Through case studies, other contributors relate science fiction to other forms of "underground" literature, consider the continual cycle of illegitimate art replacing legitimate art, look at young readers of science fiction, chart the rising and falling "stock" of science fiction writers' reputations, and consider the influence of editors on a writer's work. Finally, in looking at science fiction and market realities in other countries and other media, the contributors examine American and British science fiction in the context of the two countries' different histories and market conditions, Russian science fiction and the collapse of the Soviet Union, independent and mass-market science fiction film and video, the opening up of the comic book market, and interactive computer games. |

Editorial Review Product Description The focus of the book is not entirely on critical restraints but also on the genre's robustly subversive, creative drive--its unwillingness or inability to pause for critical validation. The essays examine the proliferation of stylistic acts and experiments in science fiction and fantasy writing as assess the genre's revolutionary qualities: its reordering of narrative priorities, inversion of consecrated categories, and elevation of "minor" devices. Customer Reviews (1)
Lots of pieces of your brain I usually find most theory books dull, and a chore to read through. But as I am an avid Science Fiction reader I found almost all the essays approachable. Many books I've read were discussed and so opened new doors to me for re-reading them. Discussing Science Fiction in a literary fashion should help to promote the cause that Science Fiction is real fiction. Work such as the creation of new words in British Science fiction, the role of Utopia, and so on. Each is written by a different author and are usually well footnoted and researched. If you're a Science Fiction fan, but don't enjoy reading theory books, this one might surprise you. ... Read more |
