5-0 out of 5 stars Young Lindbergh drives a car around rural Minnesota in 1916
The books in the Diaries, Letters and Memories series introduce young readers to real young people from different time periods in American history.Although "The Boyhood Diary of Charles A. Lindbergh, 1913-1915" was written by someone who would grow up to become one of the most famous people of the 20th century, most of these books are just ordinary young men and young women writing about the interesting times in which they lived. In fact, besides some references to wanting to fly, you would never really recognize that this was young Lindbergh.Part of his life is rather unusual since his father was a U.S. Congressman from Minnesota. So when young Charles goes on a train trip, it is because he and his mother are traveling to Washington, D.C.However, the point is clearly to inform young readers about what train travel was like early in the last century.Similarly, when Charles travels around the state with his father, who is running for the Senate, the emphasis is not on the politics but rather on the trials and tribulations of driving an automobile through rural Minnesota in 1916 (it still snowed in May, even back then).Of course, for me the part that hits home is his description of running low on gas and coasting down the hill into Duluth (been there, done that).

These books use the diary entries as they originally appeared, word for word as they were written, with misspellings and mistakes in grammar. Lindbergh writes about boating down the Mississippi from its source at Lake Itasca and tracking wildlife.Detailed sidebars explain about Passenger Trains, the U.S. Congress, and Early Automobiles, complementing the diary entries with additional information.Books in these series go back as far as the diary of Sally Wister, a Colonial Quaker Girl up to Lindbergh, but of these dozen volumes the only other famous people are Louisa May Alcott and Theodore Roosevelt. This is certainly an interesting little series.I have read several books that try to give young students an idea of what life was like in different time periods, and these books do a much better job of that than any of those I have seen so far. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Lindbergh Kidnapping
The book is about a famous baby being kidnapped and how for years the police tried to blame it on someone. It is also about how hard it is to know who the real kidnappers are versus who are just people who want some money. This is a tradgic case not only for the parents and everyone involved but also for a man who was wrongly executed.I really enjoyed reading this book, the author really laid out this book well. This book was easy to understand and follow. It is really a book worth getting and reading. ... Read more

Text extracted from opening pages of book: CHARLES LINDBERGH HIS LIFE BY DALE VAN EVERY AND MORRIS DEHAVEN TRACY INTRODUCTION BY KARL A. BICKBL PRESIDENT OB 1 THE UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATIONS NEW YORK #-& LONDON D. APPLETON AND COMPANY MCMXXVII > B. Y The source material upon which this account of Captain Lindbergh's career is based, was collected in the United States and Europe by the news organization of the United Press Associations. Copyright, 1927, by the United Press Associations PRINTED UT THB XTNITBD STATES OJF INTRODUCTION This narrative of the career of Charles Lind bergh is really the product of the extraordinary interest in his personality shown by millions of people. Judged by the response felt from the readers of hundreds of newspapers, no single figure of our time has so caught the imagination of people every where. Newspapers around the world have found it impossible to tell too much about him. His admirers were not content to read about his great flight. They wished to know how he became what he is to-day. To meet this demand the United Press prepared a condensed life story of Captain Lindbergh which was published in its member newspapers. Material for this story was secured much the same as other news information would be secured through a world wide news organization. Instructions were wired to every branch office in every city and town in the United States and abroad where Lindbergh or his immediate ancestors had resided or even visited. Responses to this request poured into head-V INTRODUCTION quarters by wire, cable, wireless and air mail. Al most immediately there was assembled an amazing quantity of information concerning Lindbergh. Scores of friends of the Lindbergh family were interviewed, many companions of Lindbergh's youth told what they remembered about him, official records and old newspaper files were examined in fact al most every conceivable source of information was investigated by United Press representatives. Far more material accumulated than had been an ticipated. Lindbergh, as might have been expected, proved in the light of all this data to have had a thoroughly colorful and interesting career. One of the most interesting figures in the world to-day to the general public, he was in a sense equally interest ing as a boy of ten when he used to sit on a bicycle seat attached in the top of a tree and dream of flying. It seemed appropriate to bind together this mass of carefully collected material in some permanent form and this boot is the result of this endeavor. The authors, members of the editorial staff of the United Press, assembled all the facts which were gathered as I have indicated and from them wrote the narrative account as it is set down in this story of Lindbergh's career. Morris DeHaven Tracy and Dale Van Every, the vi INTRODUCTION writers, have asked me to acknowledge the gener ous assistance and counsel of the following: Robert J. Bender, General News Manager of the United Press; A. L. Bradford; Ralph Heinzen and John O'Brien of the Paris staff of the United Press ; Carl D. Groat, William J. McEvoy and Joseph Was ney of the Washington staff; Louis Keemle and Lyle C. McCormick of the Lincoln staff; Kenneth G. Crawford of the St. Louis staff; and, in general, of practically every member of the United Press news organization which as a whole made this book a possibility. They also wish to acknowledge the important aid rendered by Ernest J. Carlson of Little Falls, Min nesota, Myron V. Depcw of the San Diego Sun, T. L, Greenfield of Butte, Montana, and J. C. Product Description
Charles A. Lindbergh astounded the world on May 21, 1927, with his successful solo flight from New York to Paris in The Spirit of St. Louis. Upon his return to the United States, he received an unprecedented welcome and was regarded as a hero to a generation of Americans who looked to the skies as a field of promise and progress. Lindbergh has been the subject of scrutiny and controversy ever since.
Reflecting America's faith in technological advancement, Lindbergh saw The Spirit of St. Louis as "a lens focused on the future, a forerunner of mechanisms that would conquer time and space." This youthful optimism was later tempered by personal tragedy-the kidnapping and murder of his first-born son-and by the threat of American involvement in a war abroad. But Lindbergh confronted these challenges, often at odds with his supporters, with the same daring and boldness of character that inspired him to undertake his fabled flight.
In Lindbergh: Flight's Enigmatic Hero, Von Hardesty, curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, takes another look at Lindbergh's life and offers new insights into the man and the myths that surrounded him. Drawing from a variety of sources, he reveals how Lindbergh, though stubborn and absolutist in many ways, evolved in his outlook and world view. With hundreds of full-color images and illustrations taken from a rich variety of private and public collections, Hardesty has produced a visually stunning and fascinating biography of one of the most important figures of the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars I ordered this book as a gift.
I ordered this book as a gift for a friend. It arrived in a timely manner and my friend really likes the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice summary of his life
This is not an in-depth biography. Rather, it is more of an overview of Lindbergh's life and accomplishments, in a nice format mixing text, charts, and photos.

Lindbergh is famous for his landmark 33-hour solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. However, it was not successful due to him being "Lucky Lindbergh", but by having the right equipment at the time and good planning. The newly developed Wright engine proved to be much more reliable than previous engines, and the Ryan airplane was modified for the flight.

The book also touches on less well-known aspects of Lindbergh's life, such as his development of medical equipment, his on-and-off relationship with president Roosevelt and the military, his "civilian" combat duty in WWII, and his environmentalist viewpoints.

The book should appeal to the general population as well as to airplane and aviation buffs and historians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pictorial on the Legendary Aviator
This is essentially a "coffee table" book on Charles Lindbergh, not a conventional biography. It's a great introduction to the Lindbergh phenomeon and even buffs who own many a Lindbergh book will find much to appreciate here with the rare photographs. If you want gossip, criticism, or speculation, it's not here. What you get is a straightforward look at the man and particularly his public life and career and with so many of the recent Lindbergh books loaded with conjecture and agendas, that is a most welcome stance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average biography
There is not much in this book that I have not read before in other books.I found the organization to be a little confusing and repetitive. One of the timelines also gives the date of Hitler's suicide as 3 weeks after the end of WW2. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Hero
This book, written by Walter S. Ross is written without the approval of Charles Lindbergh, but I'm sure there isn't anything said in this book that he would actually disapprove of. It is written in a style thatmakes it hard to put down and I would definitely recommend it to any one who is interested in learning about Charles Lindbergh's life. It combines most of the information that is covered seperately in other books I have read by Lindbergh and others and grips you from the first page to the last. I give it 5 Stars
