Product Description
God is looking for a few good partners; working partners. No relationship works for long if one partner does all the asking, and the other does all the work.Yet look at how that attitude saturates our prayers.

God could easily run the World without us, yet He has chosen to rely on us to do our part. Pastor Jerry L. Lewis tells us that each prayer request actually has two parts: the part God works on, and the part we are responsible for as His assistants.

“What God Can’t Do” sheds new light on our relationship with God and exposes how many of our commonly held beliefs about Him actually hinder our prayers.Pastor Jerry also focuses on the types of questions we ask God.He points out that it is just as easy to make a dynamic prayer request as it is to make a flat one.

Most of the things we pray about can be easily re-worded for exponentially better results with just a little thought. For example, some folks decide to pray for patience, but patience is learned by trial and tribulation. Did they just paint a bull’s-eye on the top of their heads? Maybe. They could have instead asked, “Lord, keep me so closely focused on you that I don't get distracted by negative people and unimportant events.”

Written in a light-hearted, easy to read style, Pastor Jerry presents unique and original insights into God's purpose and design in our lives. He shares from his heart the "secret of happiness," and shows how most of our sickness, frustration, and relationship problems ultimately have a hidden spiritual root cause that can be readily discovered and addressed. Other topics include: hands-on prayers that work for physical healing, Forgiveness 101, exploring and listening to God, unconditional love, and much more.

Also included is the prayer that God always answers immediately, and the one question we should never let God hear us asking (or even thinking).

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should use these prayer power keys!
What God Can't Do is an engaging, thought-provoking, insightful and genuinely enjoyable book to read. The author, Pastor Jerry L. Lewis, shares his insights and experiences in a light-hearted, easy-to-understand manner that is highly effective at reaching out and relating to the reader.

Pastor Lewis gets to the heart of the matter of effective prayer. Most important, he explains what to ask for and what not to ask for, and why. The Skills Drills questions at the end of each chapter helps the reader drive each point home in a positive, self-reflective manner.

"What God Can't Do" is a superb manual for the most important communication in your life...prayer. How to talk to God, and how to listen to Him, is something far too many people don't make time for, or only do when they are desperate, and then don't have the practice and built up "prayer muscles" to be consistent and effective at it, with the ensuing result of thinking that "prayer doesn't work." Pastor Jerry Lewis gives you all the basic pointers, like always making sure that what you hear in your spirit matches with what is written in scripture (it pays to know your Bible well) and so much more. Pastor Jerry writes about the 5 things that are most likely to happen when the Lord communicates, and the one that I had never thought of before, but is so true, is that the inner noise "flat-lines," and your mind, even for just an instant, becomes "crystal clear like the rarified air at the top of a mountain."

Pastor Jerry shows us many tools we can implement in our prayer time. I really like his "Lord, please show me one thing I need to know about this situation." Just one thing. No clutter or confusion. All you need is one thing, to set your feet on the right path. This is a great prayer secret in times of need, and if asked with sincerity, He will respond. And as Pastor Jerry points out on page 12, God always responds in a way you least expect, and in a way that surpasses expectation. "What God Can't Do" deals with the all important subject of forgiveness, praying in a group, healing prayer, and much more. Pastor Jerry also gives Skill Drills at the end of each chapter, which help us solidify what we have learned, and sort out any inner conflicts.

My copy of "What God Can't Do" is now heavily highlighted, and will be referred to again and again. A teacher, pastor and missionary for over 3 decades, Pastor Jerry also has a sense of humor and an engaging, appealing quality that comes through the pages of his book. You can't help but like this man, and his unique and wise Jerry Theories are great. This is a slender book with a lot of spiritual meat and potatoes. It's got a nice simple layout too, with very easy-on-the-eyes large print. Ask God the right questions, and he will always listen, and answer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Contrast That Could Have Been Done Better But Should Have Been Done
This book is deep, dealing with a pair of great apologists. It is not perfect, but it still is a great book, though I'm not in the majority.I'm reviewer #9 of this book, and the majority ruling is four stars (I'm only the second five star), with a pair of three star reviews and one each of two and one stars. So you might want to read the other reviews rather than rely on mine alone.

A friend of mine gave me this book because a) she thought I would enjoy it and b) it was too deep for her.It is a deep book -- it took me six months to work through it (though I've also read . . . and reviewed . . . other books during that time).

I started this book with some knowledge of both Lewis and Schaeffer, having read some of their writings, but not being very familiar. In reading this book, I found a common soul in Francis Schaeffer. However, this book leans toward Lewis. In every area where Lewis and Schaeffer disagreed, the authors sided with Lewis consistently while I just as consistently sided with Schaeffer. This should not be surprising, though, because both authors teach at Asbury which is closer to Lewis than Schaeffer in theology and both have written on Lewis. Thus, the book has a bias, but not an agenda. The authors, for example, pointed out that Schaeffer is the one with theological education.

Personally, I think one thing the authors should have done was to not comment. This book would have been stronger if they left their point of view out of it and let the reader make up his own mind after seeing the contrast of the two apologists.

The final chapter is useful in taking the insights of these two men and taking the lessons to the modern time.

One side comment that I need to make.About a year ago, I never heard of Molina and his view of middle knowledge. In a year, I've read three books referring to his views including this one.The first one was written by a compatabilist, while this book takes the opposite view.(The third was "The Apologetics Study Bible", where one of the writers was promoting Molina.)

4-0 out of 5 stars To Reach The World - Lewis and Schaeffer
These authors set out to compare and contrast (more contrast) between two of the most arguably influential apologists of the 20th Century. They begin with a bio-sketch of these two men. While many other reviews, probably coretly note a more favorable presentation of Lewis, in this chapter, Schaeffer is presented very favorably. The next chapter, correctly presents the views on salvation these two held - commonalities and of course, the differences.Schaeffer did hold to a very forenisic atoning theory (Anselmian idea of atonement as a legal act also known as the penal substitutionary view)), while Lewis, I would assert does not discard that view, but sees and postulates a rooted, traditional Christian approach, that one is transformed into a Christlike person.

The authors do show a little bias in favoring Lewis here, but then again, at least Walls is not a Calvinist and show the legal act in viewing salvation is just not as important to him.But they are kind to Schaeffer here.

They also discuss the different apologetic approaches of these individuals and they evaluate their positions for Christiain accuracy.Yes, the authors do lean much more toward Lewis' ideas and thgeological positions, but I think they correctly review, explain and critique Schaeffer.Schaeffer is also given much credit for establishing La'Bri and in his desire to help otehrs wrestle with Christian truth.

Of course, these types of books have weaknesses, but overall, these authros do a good job and show the views of these two Christian gaints fairly.

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor book by poor scholars...
This book is an example of how not to write a fair evaluation of two great thinkers. The authors worship Lewis as if he were the apologist who could think no wrong, while they condemn Schaeffer as an ignorant fundamentalist who was just about always wrong in some shape or form. I enjoy reading the works of both Lewis and Schaeffer. I have never found their views to be mutually exclusive as Burson and Walls lead their readers to believe.

If I could summarize this book in one word it would be "biased." Burson and Walls have obvious Armenian tendencies, which might have led them to cling so firmly to Lewis' backside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Use this as a Tool to Examine Your Own Faith
I selected this book to read after reading Hugh Hewett's "The Embarassed Believer". I wanted to get a better feel for what apologetics is about. What better place to go than to the two greatest apologists of the 20th century.

Burson and Walls certainly have a point of view, but I do not think that it detracts from their comparisons of Lewis and Schaeffer. I found that it pushed me to hold up my own beliefs to the same analyses they used on their subjects. I learned where I have strengths and where there are gaping holes in my understanding of the faith.

The territory covered is quite expansive, many of the areas of belief were outside of any regular theological discussions by lay leaders in my church experience. As a Christian called to lay ministry, I have found it important to carefully examine my own beliefs about the nature of the relationship between God and Man before trying to take the "good news" to those outside of the church.

As most comparisons of human-beings are, there are flaws. We are all flawed, but we all have something to say about who and what God is and does in the world. This book gives us a framework to build and articulate our own understanding of what faith in Jesus represents in the millenium ahead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Writing, Suspect Conclusions
I must admit that I found this book intriguing and valuable, however, onlyas a sense of somebody else's opinions on two influential apologists.Manyof the authors' conclusions and critiques on Lewis and Schaeffer were wellpresented, except for one thing. One got the sense as the book was read, that the authors were very proficient and setting up straw men to knockdown or using statements somewhat out of context to support their owntheological views. While I have no problem using other's statements tosupport your own theological views, I do have a problem with writing a bookunder the guise of a critique of apologists in order to support andstrengthen your own theological slant.

I can't say that their theologicalslant was that much different then my own. There are differences, but Ifound myself agreeing with the bulk of their presentation theologically. However, I do feel that they may have done Schaeffer and Lewis an injusticeby oversimplifying their positions. The book is worth reading, but not fora completely accurate depiction of Lewis and Schaeffer's positions. ... Excerpt: The Day the Clown Cried is an unfinished and unreleased 1972 film directed by and starring Jerry Lewis. It is based on a scriptment of the same name by Joan O'Brien, who had co-written the original script with Charles Denton 10 years prior. The film was met with controversy regarding its premise and content, which features a circus clown who is imprisoned in a Nazi camp. The Day the Clown Cried has become somewhat infamous among film historians and movie buffs as a film that has never officially been released. Lewis plays a washed-up German circus clown named Helmut Doork during the beginning of World War II and Holocaust. Although he was once a famous performer who toured America and Europe with the Ringling Brothers, Doork is now past his prime and receives little respect. After getting demoted for causing an accidental mishap during one performance, he shares his problems with his wife, who advises him to stand up for himself. Before he can summon the courage to defend himself, he overhears the lead clown Gustav telling the ringmaster to fire Helmut or else he will resign, to which the showman reluctantly agrees. Distraught, Helmut is caught by the Gestapo for ranting about Germany and drunkenly mocking Adolf Hitler in a bar. After an interrogation at the Gestapo headquarters, he is imprisoned in a Nazi camp for political prisoners. For the next three to four years, he remains there while hoping for a trial and a chance to plead his case. He tries to keep ...http://booksllc.net/?id=2448004 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon (also known as The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon and The Jerry Lewis Stars Across America MDA Labor Day Telethon) is hosted by actor and comedian, Jerry Lewis to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). It has been held annually since 1966. As of 2007, the telethon had raised $1.46 billion since its inception. It is held on Labor Day weekend, starting on the Sunday evening preceding Labor Day and continuing until late Monday afternoon, syndicated to approximately 190 television stations throughout the United States. In recent years, the telethon generally runs live for 21 hours, from 9PM ET to 6PM ET, though actual start and end times may vary by station. Previously, the telethon ran live for 21 1/2 hours, ending at 6:30PM ET; however, the MDA still considers this length to be the official length of the telethon, turning over the final 30 minutes, from 6PM to 6:30PM ET to its affiliate stations for local wrap-ups. MDA calls its network of participating stations the "Love Network". The show has originated from Las Vegas for 23 of the 40 years it has aired. Jerry began hosting telethons to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America in 1952 after a plea from a staff member who worked on Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis' editions of the Colgate Comedy Hour. The shows first originated from a variety of locations in New York City in 1954, as local telethons seen exclusively on WABD-TV Channel 5 (later WNEW-TV, now WNYW). After Lewis conducted many 4 hour shows in the NY area to benefit the organization, the idea of a big Telethon came about. The organization (MDAA) approached Lewis to host the big event and he agreed. Organiz...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6832977 ... Read more
