Product Description
Lewis and Clark's 1804 to 1806 expedition to discover a direct water route to the Pacific Ocean resulted in accomplishments never imagined. Although they never found a water route west, they discovered and described more than 40 American Indian tribes, 122 animals unknown to science, and 178 types of plants. In exquisitely detailed watercolor illustrations and intriguing essays, Common to This Country explores more than two dozen of these plants' place in history and their significance.

The book skillfully chronicles Lewis' obsession with plant collecting, often in his own words, and botanically accurate watercolors display the salient features often noted in Lewis's journal. This beautiful guide will appeal to natural history buffs and gardeners alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A botanist's review of Common to This Country
As both a botanist who is familiar with many of the species in the book, and as a lover of history and the story of Lewis and Clark, I found the book very enjoyable. I'm in agreement with the other review (as of 10 March 2006) that the illustrations are very pleasing, and the book and paper quality is excellent. New and well done botanical illustrations have become a rarity in the days of digital photography, and these drawings, by Charlotte Staub Thomas, are excellent, the one exception being the drawing for bur oak which is sub-par. Certainly, serious botanists would wish for more information about each plant, and for more plants to be included. But as a book for plant lovers and gardeners, this book is a real value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This book was mentioned in a local newspaper; I received it for my birthday and really enjoyed reading it!! It is a delightful mix of history and botany with soft illustrations. It has quotes from the journals of Lewis and Clark and reveals their reactions to plants they collected. The design, pages with a muted yellow edge and the font, helped tell the story of plant collection during the Lewis and Clark expedition. Interesting details were shared about the expedition and the plants that were collected. The illustrations also were muted or soft - not the hard line drawings you sometimes see of plants. Designed and written well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning book
My son is 7 and loves this entire series.Contrary to what "C. Williams" below stated, the pictures in this book are realistic without being gory, and it sticks to scientifically-established facts to explain the extinction of the dinosaurs. Some people are just idiots and can't handle anything but Disney saccharine.

5-0 out of 5 stars For your young scientist
In this book, Charlotte Lewis Brown brings to life a realistic view of a part of history that fascinates young minds. The story is gripping in its realism. At first it may be a bit of a challenge for young minds, but it brings a thoughful answer to the question of what happened.Happily the sequels bring new hope and new life.A challenging book that young readers will return to time and time again.Great graphics too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Day the Dinosaurs Died
Scientists/Paleontologists have offered several theories explaining the extinction of the dinosaurs. Author Charlotte Lewis Brown provides the reader with a look at the demise of individual dinosaurs after a meteor or asteroid crashed to Earth 65 million years ago. My students (ages 6-8 years old) were fascinated by the "closer view" of the catastrophe as opposed to a more general presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good high interest book for new readers
This ismy four year old daughters favorite book.I appreciate the subtle retro cover and title. It does talk about animals dying and extinction, but the pictures are not particularly grotesque and there is nothing I would consider gratuitous. I mean that's what dinosaurs do (did), the meat eaters anyway, just like all carnivorous wild animals, they didn't eat at McDonalds.I guess I can understand the previous reviewers opinion if this is her first non-cartoony book about dinosaurs. But really, it's just a couple mild pictures of t-rex eating an (already dead) edmontosaurus just before the asteroid hits. In any case, we love it and think it's an excellent book with great illustations. Sure to peek a youngsters interest in science!

1-0 out of 5 stars not for young children
My mother in law purchased this book through a book fair for my son who is learning to read.I was shocked after reading this book myself.I do not think this book is appropriate for young children. The pictures are very grotesque and the plot is very scary. My son will not be reading this one. ... I had touble with this book at first because I thought that I could just skip the given materials, use paper and be fine. I was wrong. Once you use the gummed mailing tape miracles happen. Anyone can create the polyhedra in this book with a little gummed mailing tape and some time on your hands. I have really enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for kids of all ages
I used this book to generate additional projects for my honors geometry students. The students all loved it.They were able to create beautiful objects that also had real mathematical significance.I have also usedthis book with friends. Creating these objects with others is a great wayto initiate mathematical conversations with "non-mathematicians". "Real" mathematicians also dig it.If you enjoy math or thinkyou might enjoy math, try this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sea monsters & prehistoric birds
Reviewed by Evan Weldon (age 6) for Reader Views (6/08)

"Beyond the Dinosaurs: Monsters of the Air and Sea" by Charlotte Lewis Brown is about sea creatures and flying creatures that lived at the time of the dinosaurs and "were just as strange and wonderful as any dinosaur."The book talks about eleven different creatures:four bird-like ones and seven that spent most of their time in the water.

One of my favorite creatures from the book was the Pterodaustro, a flying creature that used its long thin teeth to filter sea water and trap tiny sea creatures that the Pterodaustro ate.I also found the Microraptor very interesting. It has neat claws on its wings that it used to climb trees. It couldn't really fly but used its wings to glide to the ground.

The illustrations were good, but not the best; most of the drawings show animals attacking or about to eat something. It is kind of hard to tell how big some of the creatures would have been in real life.

This book gave a little information about a lot of different prehistoric creatures. It might get kids interested in going to the library to learn more about some of these interesting animals. I liked "Beyond the Dinosaurs: Monsters of the Air and Sea" by Charlotte Lewis Brown and will read it again (all by myself!).

Excerpt: Dr. Charlotte Staples Lewis is a fictional character on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) television series Lost, played by Rebecca Mader. Charlotte is introduced in the second episode of season four and is a cultural anthropologist on a mission to the island where Oceanic Flight 815 crashed. On the island she is initially held hostage by one of the plane crash survivors, John Locke (Terry O'Quinn), but is freed when another person from her team switches place with her. She helps prevent poison gas from being released over the island, and develops a relationship with Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies). In season five, she and the other inhabitants of the island begin to jump through time, which gives her headaches and nosebleeds, eventually causing her death. Although conceived by the show's creators to be American, Charlotte's nationality was changed to British after the producers were impressed with English actress Rebecca Mader's audition. She was supposed to feature in just eight episodes of season four, but after the 20072008 Writers Guild of America strike the role was expanded, which resulted in her starring in fifteen episodes over the fourth and fifth seasons. Charlotte's introduction, along with the three other new characters from the freighter introduced in season four, was well received, but her storylines in later episodes had a mixed reception, though Mader's acting was praised. During season five, a young Charlotte Lewis is shown living with her parents as part of a scientific community known as the Dharma Initiative, on the island where Oceanic Flight 815 would later crash.
