Product Description
Bestselling author Tina McElroy Ansa is back with another tale from Mulberry, Georgia, the richly drawn fictional town and home of the extraordinary Lena McPherson.Lena, now forty-five and tired of being "the hand everyone fans with," has grown weary of shouldering the town's problems and wants to find a little love and companionship for herself. So she and a friend perform a supernatural ritual to conjure up a man for Lena. She gets one all right: a ghost named Herman who, though dead for one hundred years, is full of life and all man.His love changes Lena's life forever, satisfying as never before both her physical and spiritual needs.Filled with the same "humor, grace, and great respect for power of the particular" (The New York Times Book Review) as her previous critically acclaimed novels, Baby of the Family and Ugly Ways, The Hand I Fan Withis yet another memorable and life-affirming tale from one of America's best-loved authors.Amazon.com Review
This novel is a sequel to Tina McElroy Ansa's Baby of the Family, in whichreaders were introduced to her heroine, Lena McPherson. Lena was born with acaul over her face, a fold of skin that, according to the elderly ofMulberry, Georgia, promises good fortune. Indeed, Lena is blessed--andcursed--with the ability to read minds, a gift that has fueled her commercialprosperity and her numerous community projects but has also, she feels, stifled her romantic life. It's hard to fall in love with a man whose meanestthoughts are plain to you, Lena finds. The author's solution to Lena'sdilemma is a ghost: Herman, who has been dead for a century but who still has"plenty of life in him." This unlikely coupling--and couple theydo, overcoming the usual obstacles to human-astral intercourse--leads to akind of happiness for Lena as McElroy explores her fictional Southern world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars MD People
This is a great book to read.I purchased it more than 10 years ago and have picked it up continually to read throughout the years. This book is very memorable and find that I enjoy reading each and every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
I have not read any other books by this author but this book was given to me as a gift. It was one of the best written stories I've ever read.

I will admit it started a bit slow, but once I got engrossed into I could not put the book down.

The love story between Lena and Hermon was beautiful. I also enjoyed the super natural aspects of the story.

A great read

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
The book is a followup to Baby of the Family. It's a wonderful continuation of Lena McPherson's story.I couldn't put it down.It was great!

4-0 out of 5 stars WOWOWOW
This book was so intense, that it awoke emotions that I didn't know existed!! Every chapter put me in suspense for the next. Herman is every woman's dream man...you have to read the book to know what I talking about!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Life is just too short
This book has been in my TBR pile for over a decade and it should have stayed there. While there is a part of me that doesn't want to give an author who'd obviously labored over this novel and padded it with a bunch of useless information and side stories that never go anywhere such a low rating, the other part simply can't ignore the fact this novel was one the most boring reads I've read in years.Usually when I give a rating like this it's because of sloppy work or undeveloped storylines. The thing is, I think the author did think this out.And while the idea of someone falling in love with a ghost is appealing, the author failed to capitalize on the drama and problems that would surround such a notion.Eighteen pages devoted to telling thedifferent kind of wood furnishing her house???A whole chapter telling me how her 'Li'l Sister' sings and people can hear it?WTF?
Starting off, Lena MacPherson is a totally unrelatable character. She's just so perfect that EVERYBODY relies on her for everything. She spends most her days being the town's band-aid and then still have time to run businesses.Sure I get the message is for her to start taking care of herself-but this message shouldn't taken so long to get.No one could do what this character was supposedly able to do.The backstories would come in at weird times and there is no meaning or purpose to them. She literally beats you over the head with the ghosts name being symbolic. There should have been more of a fight with Anna Belle.I wanted to know the consquences of her mother burning the caul-thingy.Something in the neighbor that could be described as 'compelling'.There was so much I didn't like about this book that it would take another book to explain it all.Just suffice to say-this was one BORING book about nothing. ... Product Description
Fauziya Kassindja's harrowing story begins in Togo, Africa, where she enjoyed a sheltered childhood, shielded by her progressive father from the tribal practice of polygamy and genital mutilation. But when her father died in 1993, Fauziya's life changed dramatically. At age seventeen Fauziya was forced to marry a man she barely knew who already had three wives, and prepare for the tribal ritual of female genital mutilation--a practice that is performed without painkillers or antibiotics. But hours before the ritual was to take place, Fauziya's sister helped her escape to Germany, and from there she traveled to the United States seeking asylum--and freedom.Instead, she was stripped, shackled, and locked up in various INS detention facilities for sixteen months.

Enter Layli Miller Bashir, a driven twenty-three-year-old law student who took on Fauziya's case. When the two women met, Layli found an emotionally broken, emaciated girl with whom she forged an extraordinary friendship.Putting her heart and soul into Fauziya's case, Layli enlisted help from the American University International Human Rights Clinic. The clinic's acting director, Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law, assembled a team to fight on Fauziya's behalf.Ultimately, in a landmark decision that has given hope to many seeking asylum on the grounds of gender-based persecution, Fauziya was granted asylum on June 13, 1996.

Here, for the first time, is Fauziya's dramatic personal story, told in her own words, vividly detailing her life as a young woman in Togo and her nightmarish day-to-day existence in U.S.prisons.It is a story of faith and freedom, courage and inspiration--one that
you will not soon forget.Amazon.com Review

4-0 out of 5 stars A complicated read but well intentioned
Perhaps it is the way the author writes, but I found this book hard to follow at several points, due to the introduction of new people mentioned, and new events mentioned. I think that her story was extremely sad, depressing, and moving. I came to learn more about a country I had previously knew nothing about and about practices of sub-saharan cases of FGM. I think its a fascinating case of an individuals struggle to escape the horrors of FGM and arranged marriages. So many of stories told about atrocities done against women and girls everywhere rarely highlight the individual from a group perspective. It makes me feel even more grateful and humble to live in a country where there are far more barriers to protect women and girls than in the authors country of Togo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, just too long
This is a thought-provoking account of injustice by the U.S. immigration system against an asylum-seeker.I've recommended this book to many people. However, I have to mention that it's way too long and the reader can get bogged down. You have to be willing to persevere and slog through some tedious sections. Just do it. Ultimately, it's worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings a positive and much needed light to Islam
I was very moved by the way this girl used her religion as her strength and as her determination.I think this view is a much needed point in literature in the world we are currently living. This also brought a very honest and frightening view of the American immigration system which few people could ever know of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Powerful Book Ever
You can't read this book and remain the same person.I could say something about the plot, but many other reviews say it so well.

If you want to read a happy book, don't read this book.It is a very intense autobiography and really lets the reader empathize with her suffering. It will change your view on the world and make you realize why people fight so hard to come to America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do They Hear You When You Cry
This is the biography of Fauziya Kassindja, born into the tribes of Tchamba and Koussountu in Togo. Her father raised his family with a much more liberal view of Islam than his older brother and sister held.Fauziya's older sisters married before her father's death without having to endure the ritual of kakia, female circumcision, from which her father had also protected his wife. When Fauziya was sixteen, attending school in Ghana, her father died as a result of a bad asthma attack. She was permitted by her father's brother to finish that year of school but was not permitted to return for the following year, which would have been her senior year of high school.Instead, she was sold in marriage to a man old enough to be her father, a man with three wives already, a man who demanded she undergo kakia. With the help of her older sister Ayisha, Fauziya fled Togo, coming eventually to the United States, where she requested political asylum. The majority of the book follows her fight to gain political asylum to avoid being returned to Togo, her "husband" (although she had never signed the marriage contract!), and the ritual she feared. The book explains the legal battles to have Female Genital Mutilation recognized as a legitimate reason to request political asylum.Well-written, the book reads like a novel and would make a good movie. ...
