a changing California
Hayes-Bautista offers an incisive look at the Latino experience in California since World War 2. He analyses the changing demographics, from when Latinos were only a small minority in 1940 to the present, when they constitute the largest minority by most measures.

Part of this of course has some ambiguity. Latinos do not form a race, where even the latter term has fuzziness. We see how government workers and others have struggled over the very definition of Latino. And Latino itself is the preferred term, but other labels have applied. Mexican is frequently used in the text, though the reader is reminded that many are US-born citizens.

Most of the text looks at the last 20 years. At issues often important to many Latinos. Immigration. But also assimilation. The subject of bilingual education, or not, arises.

Very useful
The book is well thought out.It is captivating to compare your knowledge to the book and the many meanings a particular word may or may not have. It clears up misconceptions of unfamiliar vocabulary without a lot of difficulty. The layout of the text is easy to use and one that should be in every household, as well as, dog-eared, highlighted, and underlined. It is a perfect tool for research. Good, but inventory and recipe definitions are missing
The book is very good for a person taking charge of a kitchen and human resources on the restaurant. However I bought this item to help me figure out how to organize (for a Point of Sale system) the inventory. The basic points are covered, but not the hard ones.

For example a whole chiken is bought and now we have to divide it (wings, breast, etc.). It does not address How the item is entered, and how the sub items are entered into the inventory. Also, it does not show how when a created recipe subtracts items from the inventory.

I finally have to figure all this by myself. But the book as a whole is very good.
