4-0 out of 5 stars Stanley Kubrick: A Guide to References and Resources
Another of those hard to find volumes about the late director. This contains no real information about his work but is an index of books and other sources of information about the director and his works. Much likeother out of print books it does not cover his last few movies but does aidin researching his earlier works. A useful volume to add to your library. ... Read more

Product Description
Scholarly Paper (Advanced Seminar) aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Anderes, Note: very good, Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (English Philology), 23 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, one of the most eagerly anticipated movies of the 1990s, turned out to be the most controversial cinematic work of this decade. Critics are divided between scathing criticism and commendatory enthusiasm; reviews range from calling Kubrick's movie intellectually over-hyped, a disaster, or a boring experience to praising it as a triumphant victory and a masterpiece. For one thing, Eyes Wide Shut generates controversy on first viewing. It does not present easy answers or reassuring certainties, but leaves the viewer baffled as to its meaning. It is the movie's complexity and large symbolic dimension that makes one realize that a single screening may not reveal all the meanings necessary for an interpretation. One of the movie's outstanding features is its extensive use of recurring motifs, symbols, allusions, and paradox - one of the reasons why the film is difficult to understand. Thus, to come to a fuller understanding of one of the film's possible messages, it is not only useful, but also necessary to take a closer look at its symbolic structure. This paper attempts to discuss the symbols employed in the movie as it is of benefit to the film's analysis. Eyes Wide Shut presents two different planes of discourse: there is an outer reality, the social dimension, and there is the inner world of the characters, the psychodynamic dimension. To allow for the viewer to penetrate beyond the surface of outward appearances and human superficiality into the hidden worlds of dreams and fantasies, the use of symbols is an ideal instrument. Symbols appeal to the imagination and they address and evoke our emotions. They reflect on the interface between fiction and reality and thus help to reveal the ... Read more

The Greatest Movie Never Made

Ten books in one tell the strange tale of Kubrick s unfilmed masterpiece

Tucked inside of a carved-out book, all the elements from Stanley Kubrick's archives that readers need to imagine what his unmade film about the emperor might have been like, including a facsimile of the script. This collector's edition is limited to 1,000 numbered copies.

For 40 years, Kubrick fans and film buffs have wondered about the director's mysterious unmade film on Napoleon Bonaparte. Slated for production immediately following the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick s "Napoleon" was to be at once a character study and a sweeping epic, replete with grandiose battle scenes featuring thousands of extras. To write his original screenplay, Kubrick embarked on two years of intensive research; with the help of dozens of assistants and an Oxford Napoleon specialist, he amassed an unparalleled trove of research and preproduction material, including approximately 15,000 location scouting photographs and 17,000 slides of Napoleonic imagery. No stone was left unturned in Kubrick's nearly-obsessive quest to uncover every piece of information history had to offer about Napoleon. But alas, Kubrick s movie was not destined to be: the film studios, first M.G.M. and then United Artists, decided such an undertaking was too risky at a time when historical epics were out of fashion.

TASCHEN s sumptuous, limited-edition tribute to this unmade masterpiece makes Kubrick s valiant work on "Napoleon" available to fans for the first time. Herein, readers can peruse a selection of Kubrick s correspondence, various costume studies, location scouting photographs, research material, script drafts, and more, each category of material in its own book. Kubrick s final draft is reproduced in facsimile while the other texts are tidily kenneled into one volume where they dare not interfere with the visual material. All of these books are tucked inside of or shall we say hiding in? a carved-out reproduction of a Napoleon history book.

The text book features the complete original treatment, essays examining the screenplay in historical and dramatic contexts, an essay by Jean Tulard on Napoleon in cinema, and a transcript of interviews Kubrick conducted with Oxford professor Felix Markham. The culmination of years of research and preparation, this unique publication offers readers a chance to experience the creative process of one of cinema s greatest talents as well as a fascinating exploration of the enigmatic figure that was Napoleon Bonaparte.

*Includes exclusive access to searchable/downloadable online research database: Kubrick's complete picture file of nearly 17,000 Napoleonic images* ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
I'm a Kubrick nut.If you're also a Kubrick nut, you will find NAPOLEON endlessly fascinating -- the literary equivalent of an ten-course meal at a five-star restaurant at the best restaurant you could ever possibly formulate in your imagination.Despite its cost, this publication does not disappoint. And what's fascinating to me is that -- despite NAPOLEON's comprehensiveness, from a "macro" standpoint -- a studious reader garners true, unbridled insight into the quotidian methodology of Kubrick's wholly astringent sensibility. This is thanks to the exhaustively collected (and beautifully reproduced) letters and memos (both from and to Stanley) and -- even more significantly -- the "hand-written annotations" that appear, throughout the material, in Kubrick's own hand.Particularly given the time-frame during which the bulk of this material was created -- in the immediate aftermath, for the most part, of 2001 -- it's fascinating to witness the means by which Stanley was leveraging his success (to ostensibly actuate his dream project), and the extent to which his reach occasionally (and ultimately) exceeded his grasp.Kubrick's insight into the workings of the Hollywood studio system is also on evidence; viz., there's a full draft of the NAPOLEON screenplay included, but the script's (somewhat schematic) side-stepping of the contemplated scope of the more ambitiously contemplated battlefield-centric production sequences (for example : Wellington appears, in the climactic clash, but has nary a line of dialogue) subtly suggests Kubrick's savvy insofar as making the project as financially palatable as possible to Hollywood's powers-that-be.As mentioned by other reviewers, the ancillary "costuming," "production design," and other magnificently-reproduced photographic volumes add immesurably to the experience.I spent a full weekend plumbing this thing, and it was a weekend well spent (and one I look forward to undertaking again, at some point in the future) (as with future viewings of Kubrick's masterpieces).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Pity most of the world can't afford to own it
What a wonderful idea, after watching the wonderful Doco on Stanleys boxes, I was interested to buy this..... pity I will never be able to afford something so amazing...cheers for that Kubrick foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rather insane volume containing a great story
Ten books inside this massive green behemoth tell and illustrate the story of how Kubrick attempted to make this period epic for MGM right after 2001: A Space Odyssey. But a cash crunch in Hollywood at the end of the 60's, 2001's not-blockbuster numbers, and a flop from DiLaurentis called Waterlloo convinced MGM to pull out. The production was shelved, stored by Kubrick on his farm, where it sat until recently. Finally his estate has decided to revive this treasure trove of research, scriptwriting, costume planning and location scouting to a small monument of books filled with terrific historical text, photos of archived notes and correspondence, photographs, production details and techniques, and the final script. It's a movie in a box, waiting to be made.Serious, scholarly discussion of the subjects complement an embarrassment of photographic riches to fill up this beautiful, one of a kind volume for serious study of the process of independent film production. The product design of this monster is one-of-a-kind. It's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deluxe Limited Edition -
Taschen, the Kubrick Estate and Alison Castle combine to produce this amazing set of 10 books-in-a-book covering the background material for the movie Kubrick never made.

The sub-volumes are all contained within a reproduction Napoleon book from the 1920s.Inside the shell are comprehensive volumes containing location photos, costume designs, draft shooting script, date files, plans and much more.

Expensive yes, but priceless. The content will last a lifetime. ... Read more

Product Description
From the apocalyptic satire of Dr. Strangelove, to the epic vision of 2001, to the dystopian nightmare of A Clockwork Orange, Stanley Kubrick produced a wide-ranging body of work cherished by film lovers the world over. The critical controversy surrounding his highly anticipated final picture, Eyes Wide Shut, has confirmed his stature as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. In Kubrick, author and screenwriter Michael Herr gives us a personal look at the allegedly reclusive, compulsively brilliant director. He also recounts the evolution of their unique friendship, from their first meeting at a screening for The Shining in 1980, to their collaboration on the screenplay for Full Metal Jacket, through their years of marathon phone conversations on topics ranging from film and technology to philosophy and literature -- the last of which occurred mere days before the director's death. In describing Kubrick, Herr strips away the myths surrounding his friend, revealing a man who was not introverted and misanthropic (as the media and his biographers claimed), but instead warm, gregarious, and endlessly inquisitive. He was also profoundly complicated. Though he loved America -- and even embraced such pop culture touchstones as professional football and TV sitcoms -- he permanently emigrated to England because of his distrust of Hollywood. Though he disdained elitism, he would allow only the most brilliant and talented inside his inner circle. He had a tremendous love and respect for the actors and screenwriters he worked with, but his style of filmmaking often led to bitter confrontations. Filled with personal insights and previously untold anecdotes, Michael Herr's Kubrick is a probing view into the inner life of one of the most provocative visionaries of modern cinema, a man whose creative passion and powerful intellect changed the art of filmmaking forever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Books Are Sometimes In Small Bottles!
Michael, you are such a great guy! Beautiful book. And he says he'd not be a good critic of films: gee, he makes want to search my dusty dvd of Eyes Wide Shut and give it a extra try. I love Kubrick, he is the reason I started liking art films but I did think that EWS was a strange movie (I don't know, it's like something is missing, though all Kubrick elements are there). I think that every Kubrick hater should read this book before start slandering. Herr doesn't even avoid some jabs on Kubrick shortcomings and he is shows complete honesty and respect for the man.

4-0 out of 5 stars die zauberflote
mister herr beutiful prose and love of his friend can be read thorough the pages of this book...this is a book about a special man; and an even more special friendship; about how kubrick was really a man of immense knowledge j
and about his very specials tastes: homer, ophuls, "the Simpsons" football, and money...

herr dismisses the assumption that there may have been something weird about his death...yet compares "eyes wide shut" to mozart s "the magic flute" leaving in the air something to think about...warner should play more with this conspiracy theory connection as its should boast sales of "eyes wide shut" and possibly a lot of other kubrick s blu ray in the market
(mozart dies very few months after the premiere of "the magic flute" in the imperial city of viena; kubrick died some weeks after "eyes wide shut" pre-release showing in the imperial city of new york; both masterpieces deals with strange secret societies and allusions to Europe sordid past in the middle east...but most of all; both are beutiful works of art)

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Observed and Honest
It is hard to say what people expect of any book about Stanley Kubrick, much less a memoir. The film genius was eccentric and monkish -- perhaps necessarily so to be able to accomplish his exhaustively meditated film products, delivered with an attention to detail and nuance that would make most men insane. Then if you got close enough to respect what was really at work with the guy, people accuse you of worship.Herr's book-length essay has received such unfair treatment.

The little book is well-observed and candid. You get Kubrick in dashes and glimpses, but when you get him you're there.Herr has appreciation both for the pressures and realities of the film industry, and the necessary space Kubrick needed to survive in it.Truth be told, doubtless very few people ever got close to the elusive but essentially cordial directer.Eccentricity is not the same thing as lunacy and Herr makes that clear, and stands up for a world in which geniuses have the space they need to do their work and, yes, occasionally fail as all men do.While terse, when Herr hits he hits deeply, and his record of his encounter is not one that can be easily forgotten.

5-0 out of 5 stars short but articulate. Mike Herr gets it
Michael Herr writes so good but too short.however i give this one 5 stars just because i never would have read about Kubrick if not for michael herr.this book might get you interested in a brilliant film maker as well as his films.

2-0 out of 5 stars A sketch of Kubrick's personality, nothing more
Most books on Kubrick analyse his movies, rather than recount how he was. Michael Herr seemingly knew Kubrick well, so those who seeksome traits of personality of the great filmmaker should be satisfied. But don't expect much. Herr mostly talked to Kubrick on the phone (or, rather - Kubrick talked to Herr).
There are a few anecdotes, a kew quotations, and that's it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best anthology on the master to date.
After reading this compilation of texts about the late-great filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, I got the feeling I knew more than before about the master. PERSPECTIVES is filled with details about his films and about theway he worked as an artist. It is an important contribution to Kubrickstudies. This anthology edited by Falsetto covers the first period (i.e.from his second film KILLER'S KISS) all the way to his (next) to lastproduction (the incredible war flick FULL METAL JACKET). It even includesan article by Kubrick himself, as well as a piece wrote by Anthony Burgesson Kubrick's adaptation of his famous novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Overall, Iwould recommend this book to anyone interested to know more about Kubrick'swork or about cinema in general. It is a must-read for any Kubrickaficionados and, as far as I know, the only serious compilation of writingsabout this true genius of cinema. By far one of the best book on the masterto date. Let's hope that the author or the publisher will reprint it in apaperback format, so that more people will have access to it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad to see this back and in such fine form.
It's a pleasure to see this book back in print. Although Ciment's analysis is a little heavy on the semiotic side, he does an interesting job of illuminating the various thematic threads in Kubrick's work. Profusely illustrated, the book juxtaposes various stills to show the recurrance of visual motifs in each and every one of Kubrick's films (though he manages to miss my absolute favorite -- the imaculate bathroom). There are roughly two essays in the book, one dealing with Kubrick the modernist and the other on Kubrick's use of the fantastic. However, the real gems of this tome are the various interviews, three conducted with the man himself (four if you count a Q&A conducted by mail) following the releases of Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining. Somehow the author got Stan to open up in a way, that I've never seen him do in any other interview (the exception being the one for Playboy in '68).This edition also contains some fine interviews, some recently added, with Ken Adam, Jack Nicholson, Malcolm McDowell, Diane Johnson and Marisa Berenson. There is an added chapter on Eyes Wide Shut (which in part explains why it took him so long to do the film) and a memorial essay which gives a fine and tender goodbye to a great director and good friend. ...
