5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
This book is great, along with some other supplemental material I can already read Korean in a few hours of studying. The cd that comes with it helps a lot with the pronunciation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The yardstick by which all textbooks should be measured
This book is perfect in every way and was the major, if not central, contributor to my fluency in Korean. The grammar is perfect for the second and third year of a Korean course and the dialogues have a very rich and native flavor to them. The vocabulary is extremely useful and complete. I believe that complete is the exact word for this. This book is complete in every way from the table of contents to the very accessible glossaries in the back.

With the CD that comes with it or a standalone textbook, this book is ideal. The exercises within it are perfect and they reinforce what was learned in the previous chapter. Even the cheesy reading passages are appropriate for the corresponding skill level of a learner at the corresponding level for every chapter.

The color of the cover, the layout of the book is perfect; the font is perfect. The quality of the paper is perfect. Even the introduction is perfect. And the mistake count? To be honest I read this whole book and it only has 4 mistakes in all of its 500 pages. That's like less than 0.01% - as flawless as a book gets in my book.

The only problem I found with this book was that the subsequent volume that Ross King promises within it has not been delivered. Long story short, if all foreign language textbooks were like this, the world would be a more polyglotal(polyglotish?) place.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Vocabulary
The MP3 files that come with this book only have vocabulary for chapters 1, 2, and 5.The authors leave it up to everyone else to figure out the vocabulary from the Hangul.Although I can read and write Hangul, this is very cumbersome. In addition, the files do not have any English, so it is very difficult to listen to the vocabulary files that they do include unless you are sitting there with the textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful and outdated.
I bought this book for self study and spent some months using it.

The structure is quite familiar to whom has already been studying languages, various lessons are divided into a text, vocabulary, grammar notes and excercises.

Talking about the general structure, I think the lessons are too long (an average of about 20 pages per lesson) so that it is difficult to study them in small time portions (takes about a week to cover a lesson). Many lessons cover too many structures and grammar points so that the exercise can't focus on all of them.

Anyway I'd like to analyze the lacking points in each section of an average lesson.

The text is always too short, uses structures that are not going to be covered in the same lesson and in my opinion is something the authors barely took care of being generally frustrating to read and unuseful to memorize.

Vocabulary section in each lesson cover a hundred or more words, the most part of wich never appears anywhere else in the lesson making it pointless to remember the as you're not going to see them anywhere else (it's like studying from a dictionary).

Grammar notes are pointlessly complicated (especially when explaining verb endings) and stress futile points (like when to pause when using certain particles) while leaving the important explanations unclear.

About the exercises, they are overwhelmingly numerous yet poor in variety.
They are the kind of exercise you may find in a mid-80s textbook, with lots of meaningless writin to do.

This all adds to odd translations and outdated korean spelling.

I would never reccomend this book for studying Korean.
I know it is one of the few being available in English, however I suggest to buy one of the textbooks that are printed in Korea by one of the many universities that hold korean summer courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars A friendly textbook
As a basic textbook for students, "Elementary Korean" is detailed and besides offering you also some simple exercises for practice basics, it answers "friendly" to many questions and doubts one can have with regard to Korean language. Though it aims to university level learning (and it is effective), you can consider it almost as a kind of friendly "human" teacher, for its "voice" is really nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good thing in a small package.
At 32 pages, total, this is more like a pamphlet than a book.At the time I posted this review, used copies were available for 98 cents plus shipping. At this price, don't expect exhaustive coverage of the subject. However, for a quickie look at the subject, this is very nicely done. There are color pictures on every page. The monarchs covered include Akhenaten, Nefertiti, King Tut, Alexander the Great, Boudicca, Shih Huan Ti, Montezuma, Atahualpa, Charlemagne, Kublai Kahan, Henry VIII, Ivan IV, Louis XIV, Nicholas Romanov II, Shah Jahan, Ludwig II, the Dalai Lama, Elizabeth I and II, and briefer mention of a few others.I would call it suitable for all ages, high school and up.Unless you are a seasoned history professor, you will learn something about the subject from this tiny book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, but too short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for all Christians (Non-Christians too)
Excellent explanation of not just the KJV but also the reason for church splits and the problems with church doctrine and authority.
Clearly points out the most obvious problem with protestants using the KJV exclusively in that King James was the very monarch and Church of England Head that persecuted the protestants out of England.
This will help any believer gain a better direction in his/her search for a closer relationship with Christ and will help any non believer in understanding the church differences and believers in general.

Editorial Review

Product Description
It is hard to believe it now, but in 1863, the French painter, Ernest Meissonier was one of the most famous artists in the world. The darling of the 'Salon' - that all-important public exhibition of Art held biannually in Paris - he painted historical subjects in meticulous detail and sold his works for astronomical sums to collectors, who included Napoleon III himself. Manet, on the other hand, was struggling in obscurity. Famous today as the 'Father of Impressionism', when this book opens he was known only as the sloppy painter of a few much-derided canvases, depicting bourgeois gentlemen in top hats and Absinthe-drinking beggars. With his usual narrative brilliance, and eye for telling detail, Ross King has taken the parallel careers of Meissonier and Manet and used them as a lens for their times. Beginning with the year that Manet exhibited his ground-breaking 'Dejeuner sur l'herbe' and ending in 1874, with the first 'Impressionist' exhibition, King plunges us into Parisian life - on the streets and in the corridors of power - during a ten-year period full of social and political ferment. These were the years in which Napoleon III's censorious and pleasure-seeking Second Empire fell from its heights into the ignominy of the Franco-Prussian war and the ensuing Paris Commune of 1871. But also, when a group of artists, with Manet at the vanguard, began to challenge the establishment by refusing to paint classical or historical subjects and, instead, turning to the landscapes and ordinary people they saw around them. Benign as such paintings might seem today, they helped change the course of history. The struggle between Meissonier and Manet to get their paintings exhibited in pride of place at the Salon was not just about Art, it was about how to see the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Decade of Hope and Failure
In "The Judgment of Paris," Ross King has written a fresh history of the period in France that produced Impressionism (1863-1873).This is quite different from any other history of the Impressionist movement that I have ever read because the author concentrates on the often reluctant "leader" of Impressionism, Edouard Manet, and the historical artist Ernest Meisonnier. These two artists were at opposite ends of the art spectrum, with Manet thumbing his nose at the critics (while desiring their praise) and Meisonnier following more conventional subjects, especially battle scenes, that would bring more patriotic approval.Still Manet did get paintings into the famous Salon and Meisonnier often did not compete, although he was often (but not always) a member of the panel of judges.

King places the art history within the times (Napoleon III, the Franco-Prussian War, the Commune and the restoration of the Republic under Adolphe Thiers) better than any other account I have read. Also he by no means neglects the other artists of the period- Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Morisot, Pissarro, and many others, pass through the story and enrich it.

In the process I was able to feel some sympathy for both protagonists, while pretty much agreeing with the historian Houssaye's judgment of Meisonnier's monumental battle scene, "Friedland". I have to confess I really don't care much for inaccurate paintings that glorify dictators, no matter how well done, and "Friedland" also has the problem of being over done and very busy, unlike the much better and more accurate "The Campaign of France."At the same time I also understand better why Manet sometimes dismayed the judges (several of his paintings are a bit difficult to understand, even as rebel works.)Still I like several of the paintings of both artists. King has, in my opinion, captured very well the humanity of these and the other artists and historical characters involved, including all their flaws and strengths.I recommend this work highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Details make this book exceptional
The Judgement of Paris is the second of Ross King's books I have read.Brunelleschi's Dome is also excellent.
This wonderfully detailed book about the decade which sees the shift in emphasis in art from detailed historical allegory to expressive modern day subject matter and the emphasis in painting moving from supporting political powers to an exploration of individual response to current life and times is superb in detail, historical reference and full of minute snippets of information which could only have been found by careful research. No art book, or art reference book I have read, and there have been many, offered this type of detail. One feels they have had a glimpse into the lives of these artists.King literally fills the pages with passionate detail of their lives including the emotional response to their failures and triumphs.Amazingly annotated.

I have read it twice and lead a book club discussion on the book.Well worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars packed with a massive amount of information
The Judgement of Paris is a very scholarly book. You can tell that Ross King delved into the period of this time and thoroughly investigated this work.

I have spent a lot of time learning about impressionism, primarily through large coffee table books with long essays and historical time-lines. However, here, King takes a totally unexpected and unusual stand. He investigates the rising and falling fortunes of two artists, Manet and Messonier. At the start of this book, King goes into detail about how Messonier was probably the most popular and successful artist of his time and Manet was at his start an out-cast.

I came to feel that Manet was the spiritual leader of the impressionist movement. I learned a lot about the beginnings of impressionism. If you want a thorough look at Impressionism's start, this is the book for you. The writing is stilted, and the constant name-dropping and step by step process gets a little tedious. But I still enjoyed all the learning I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paris In The Spring Of Modernism
Excellent.Reads like a novel. Interweaves the political, social and cultural events of an exciting period in modern art history.

Ross King follows the careers of Manet and Meissionier, painters at opposite poles of the art establishment, in the decade between the first Salon des Refuses in 1863 and the first Impressionist show in 1874.Set against the lite-opera of France's Second Empire under LouisNapoleon, he champions both artists and alternates back and forth between their very different careers.

Meissonier was the successful leader of the Salon style of historical painting with it's meticulous attention to detail and bourgeois moral value.Manetbroke with the conventions of Salon painting and took on "the painting of modern life" with a direct style of brush handling that infuriated most critics and precipitated the Impressionist movement.

In addition toquick sketches of the other players in the Paris art scene - Zola, Baudelaire, Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Hugo, Degas and many more, heengrossingly chroniclesthe Salon process and the way it dominated the careers ofartists and the attention of the rising middle class.

This is an excellent introduction to the histrionic drama of late nineteenth century Modernist painting. ... Read more
