The rhythm section of drummer Lowell Dunbar (nicknamed Sly after Sly Stone, one of his favorite musicians) and bass guitarist Robert Shakespeare started working together in the mid 1970s, after having established themselves separately on the Jamaican music scene. They are humorously also sometimes referred to as Sly Drumbar and Robbie Basspeare, one example being the sleeve notes of Black Uhuru's Red album. Sly and Robbie may well be the most prolific recording artists ever. Excerpt: Coretta Scott King (April 27, 1927 January 30, 2006) was an American author, activist, and civil rights leader. The widow of Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King helped lead the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Mrs. King's most prominent role may have been in the years after her husband's 1968 assassination when she took on the leadership of the struggle for racial equality herself and became active in the Women's Movement. Coretta Scott King was the third of four children born to Obadiah "Obie" Scott (1899-1998) and Bernice McMurray Scott (1904-1996) in Marion, Alabama. She had an older sister named Edythe, born in 1925, and a younger brother named Obadiah Leonard, born in 1930. An older daughter, Eunice Scott did not survive childhood. The Scotts owned a farm, which had been in the family since the American Civil War, but were not particularly wealthy. During the Great Depression the Scott children picked cotton to help earn money. Obie was the first black in their neighborhood to own a truck. He had a barber shop in their home. He also owned a lumber mill, which was burned down by white neighbors. Though uneducated themselves, Scott King's parents intended for all of their children to be educated. Coretta quoted her mother as having said, "My children are going to college, even if it means I only have but one dress to put on." The Scott children attended a one room elementary school 5 miles (8 km) from their home and were later bussed to Lincoln Normal School, which despite being 9 mi (14 km) from their home, was the closest black high school in Marion, Alabama, due to racial segregation in schools. Metacomet (c. 1639-1676), also known as King Philip or Metacom, was a war chief or sachem of the Wampanoag Indians and their leader in King Philip's War. He led his warriors in the uprising that would later bear his name. Hunted by a group of rangers he was fatally shot on August 12, 1676, on Mount Hope in Bristol, Rhode Island. Pontiac or Obwandiyag (c. 1720-1769), was an Ottawa leader who became famous for his role in Pontiac's Rebellion (1763-1766), an American Indian struggle against the British military occupation of the Great Lakes region following the British victory in the French and Indian War. Tecumseh (1768-1813), whose given name is more accurately rendered as Tecumtha or Tekamthi, was a famous Shawnee leader. He spent much of his life attempting to rally various Native American tribes in a mutual defense of their lands, which eventually led to his death in the War of 1812. Osceola (1804-1838) was a war chief of the Seminole in Florida. The most prominent person in a village was called
the sagamore. His advice and opinion were generally
followed, and he governed the people in a very slight
manner.

The Indians of several villages were sometimes united
together in a petty tribe and were ruled by a sachem, or
chief.

The chief did not rule over a very large tract of coun-
try. Generally none of his subjects lived more than
eight or ten miles away from him.

He ruled as he pleased, and was not subject to any
constitution or court of any kind. In fact, he was a
leader rather than a ruler. Nevertheless, a wise chief
never did anything of great importance without first
consulting the different sagamores of his tribe.

The chief held a little higher position in the tribe
than the sagamore did in his village. He settled dis-.
putes. He held a very rude form of court, where justice
was given in each case according to its merits. He sent
and received messengers to and from other tribes.

The English rangers slept with their guns at hand
that night. They knew the pride and might
and treachery of Pontiac, and they feared him.
They felt as if they were in a trap, with the
raging sea before them and the forest alive
with pitiless savages behind.

But they need have had no fear, for the
great chief thought not of massacre that night.
He thought of the English who stood ready
to avenge any harm done to their brothers ; of
his own race dependent on the white men for
rum, for wampum, for guns and powder and
bullets. Clearly the Indians must have friends
among the palefaces. The French were their
"brothers." They had given them presents,
had married their maidens, had traded, hunted,
WAMPUM and gone to battle with them. The English
were their foes. But they were many and strong. They
had beaten the French and taken their guns. The red
men must let their hatred sleep for awhile. They would
smoke the pipe of peace with the English, and the Eng-
lish would give them presents: tobacco and rum, guns
and powder.

The boy Osceola, strong and straight, and with the
spirit of an eagle, had played a man's part in the war.
He combined with the reckless courage of youth a deter-
mination that made him capable of good service in Indian
warfare. He was a good scout and an unexcelled mes-

from his bow, he had carried signals from chief to chief,
he had crept as a spy past the pickets of the enemy, he
had acted as runner and guide, taking women and chil-
dren from exposed villages to the secret recesses of the
forest. Nor had his youth exempted him from doing
the more deadly work of war.

The Seminoles had lost heavily in the war, but as a
nation they had gained some things of great value. The
hardships they had suffered together gave the various
tribes a stronger feeling of fellowship than they had had
before. Black men had fought shoulder to shoulder with
red, and would henceforth be less their inferiors and more
