Beware of this book!
This book is AWFUL! The explanations are vague at best; there are very few examples, and the "answers" in the back of the book do not even explain every part of the exercises! And to top everything else off, the authors consistently contradict themselves. It is extremely confusing to understand the point to many of the explanations and exercises.

If you are unfortunate enough to have this book as a required text for a class, take some words of advice: FIND A SUPPLEMENT! Ask your professor for something with more practice exercises and clearer explanations to go along with this text. I have yet to find another book at this advanced of a level with better explanations or one that includes Spanish grammar & linguistics in the manner of this book. However, "Manual de gramatica" by Dozier & Iguina (ISBN: 0838498329) gives fairly clear explanations, yet it is still on a pretty beginner/intermediate level, at least compared to this text.

In short, I absolutely despise this book; and its not even because I am not a native Spanish speaker. I feel pretty confident in my knowledge of Spanish grammar (at least, I did before I had this book assigned as a text!). As a warning, native Spanish speakers in my class are struggling with this text as well! If you can find a supplement, you will be all the more happier!

If you want a good time...
... then read, or better yet (and most recommended), listen to this book!It starts off with a brief intro by Larry, just brief, followed by nine lovely chapters about all of the good times Larry and Chaia have together.Thrill to the time when Larry shows up in his big brown Cougar to pick up Chaia and go play in their "secret" park.Laugh when Chaia asks for a Whopper at one of the many restaurants Larry goes to get a good, free meal, and after a few minutes, one is served on a fancy chiner plate!And that's just the first chapter!Thanks to Don and Mike for introducing this wonderful work of art to me.I can't wait to get this one for myself so I can listen to it while eating BREAKfast! ... Irresistible!
I received this book as a gift, and intended to glance at it before going to bed. Instead, I ended up reading and thinking about it for hours.If you're interested in the human condition and if you want more insight, not only into celebrities, but also into yourself, read this book. I loved it.

Paris Hilton Dreams!
Who would have thought Paris Hilton was sensitive enough to dream? This is the beauty of the book. It is filled with the dreams of celebrities from Madonna to Sophia Loren to Kurt Vonnegut, and yes, Paris Hilton! While the interpretations are terse and insightful it seems Lawrence is softer on the celebs than she is on stock traders in her column in Trader Monthly. She kills them ... but always with humor. All in all the book is a must read.

Lawrence shows us the interior life of stars. This is a first. Usually stars hide behind personnas. Lawrence lifts these veils and gets at the inner core of the stars dream lives. Particularly liked Paris Hilton before she became Paris Hilton.

A major feature of the book is a Vocabulário temático, which lists vocabulary pertinent to the cultural content of the lesson in three columns one with vocabulary used in both Brazil and Portugal, one with words used in Portugal only, and the third with words used exclusively in Brazil.

EXCELLENT Portuguese grammar ...
This is an excellent choice for you if you are looking (as I was) for a fairly complete treatment of Portuguese grammar at an intermediate to advanced level.The authors do a great job of explaining subtle grammatical points such that one can understand why things work a certain way in Portuguese as opposed to
English. The book is also fairly comprehensive.I don't think you can go wrong with this one!

Para a Frente!
I bought it for the course I am in at a University.So, it was exactly what I needed.

This book has some very complex reading.A lot of vocabulary I didn't know.You better be pretty good at Portuguese if you want to read the passages in here.

Great book for both continental Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese
I do have the older edition, but when the book fell apart, I did get another one.I like this book especially because it will say and spell out difference in Portuguese from Portugue to Brazil.(Some people from Portugal say Brazilians do not really speak Portuguese!)

Another advantage of this book, is it is not one of those hardcover huge books that belong in a backpack.This book is just a paperback, or at least the green older edition was that.

This one is a permanent part of my collection of Portuguese grammar and conversational books.

Excellent, comprehensive intermediate Portuguese texbook
This textbook is excellent.Be advised however that this is in fact a textbook, designed for serious college level learning in a classroom environment.That said, I am having great success using the text on my own while living and learning in São Paulo, Brazil.If you are familiar with foreign language study, have the discipline to actually do the exercises, and have a way to reinforce the material with real life conversation and reading material, then I couldn't recommend this more.The formatting is excellent and the chapters are divided conveniently into concise but explanatory sections focusing on thematic vocabulary, exercises, grammar lessons, and readings.

This textbook is particularly good for students with a basic grip on portuguese vocabularly, grammar, and usage, looking to improve their skills for a more fluent and professional level or reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.Or, like me, if you already have a great deal of recent Spanish study behind you and will be spending time in a Portuguese speaking country, you could skip straight to this textbook for a bit of a 'conversion' course; the languages are similar enough that this textbook - focusing on review and refinement of Portuguese language skills - suits that purpose perfectly.

The textbook is representative of its low price only in the sense that it is a paperback with black and white photos and standard paper.It will still take a beating though.And the content itself is unbeatable.If you fit into one of the circumstances above or are encountering this textbook in a classroom environment, you will be very pleased. ... What Works for YOU?
This is a book for those of us who have tried things over the years but never sat back and pulled all our learning together. The main point of the book is that each of us is unique and knows from experience what works. I love the idea of creating my own plan based on tying together the bits of what workedhere and there in the past. Also, creating my own cookbook of favorite recipes I love, too.

Not the best selection for those who have not dieted before, except that you could use this approach to stay in a thoughtful, experimental mode--there is usually SOMETHING from every diet/exercise plan we try that works...don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, figure out what works and what doesn't and build on that! Make it your own!

I took all his suggestions for diet as just that; the main idea is to stay true to who we are as individuals.

Worst Diet Book Ever
This is probably the worst diet book ever written.Had this book been written by a knowledgable nutritionist, pyschatrist, or doctor, it really could've been something.The concept, that we know ourselves best, is a good one, but for those of us who are still trying to figure ourselves out, the author doesn't provide any advice on how to learn what works for us.And, in fact, the author doesn't know himself all that well, either.It took a visit to his doctor for him to learn that citrus fruit is "bad" for him (and no explanation of how or why the doctor determined this, either, which struck me as suspicious).This isn't an obvious diet applicable to anyone--it's merely the story of one man's weight loss.

After going on and on about "making your own rules," the author proceeds to set out rules you must follow (including a fast day and a treat meal, two concepts that have never worked for me and are strongly advised against by most nutritionists).And contrary to what the cover claims, the "Obvious Diet" does require you to change your lifestyle.Let's face it, if your lifesytle was working for you, you wouldn't need to diet.

The author is self-congratulatory and drops names like most of us would like to drop pounds.If you want to read about the diets of Larry King and Koo Stark, you'll enjoy this, but I didn't read anything that I could reasonably apply to my life.

I gave this book 2 stars because there are some good recipes (most of which are reprinted from other cookbooks).Other than that, this book is a waste of good trees.

Not as good as the cover suggests
I guess anyone who's ever lost weight can now write a "bestselling" diet book.Yes, we all know how to lose weight - eat less - exercise more.I had thought that this would be an original, amusing take on losing weight - from a real person who was out there in the trenches - and actually lost weight.

What I read was name dropping of all of the author's famous friends and Mr. Victor listing every diet under the sun and being told to pick the parts you like from each one.The book was relatively boring from the middle of the book to the end.

I applaud Ed Victor for actually losing the weight and keeping it off.However, this book is not going to help the rest of us until we have enough willpower to stop eating dairy, wheat, fat and sugar (which is soooooooo hard to do).

Simple Advice, Excellent Presentation
Dangitall, someone just wrote the diet book I've always wanted to write, and he did a darned good job of it.In The Obvious Diet, Ed Victor points out that you are your own best diet designer and he inspires you to give it another shot.In these days of protein-vs.-carbs-vs.-macrobiotics and et cetera, it is refreshing to read this occasionally humorous book.

Victor suggests using a food journal to identify your personal weak spots and then has a handful of general diet ideas to put into action.Most entertaining is the chapter on celebrity diet tips, which provides a real look at how individualized every person's eating is.... ... Read more
