Product Description
In 1977, the U.S. Congress passed the Clean Water Act, an amendment to the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act, to focus on the control of the discharge of toxic pollutants into U.S. waters. As a result, U.S. regulatory agencies adopted guidance and policies to incorporate WET monitoring and limitation. Discharges found or predicted toxic to aquatic life by this monitoring were required to be resolved often through the TRE process with TIE acting as a series of characterization steps that could be used as part of the broader TRE to identify the causes of observed effects. These tools were initially described by the USEPA in the 1990s, but few compendia of updated techniques or knowledge gained were easily accessible.Almost 25 years after the Clean Water Act established a framework for effluent toxicity control, SETAC invited North American and European participants representing universities; government, research, and regulatory agencies; mining and chemical industries; and consulting services to a Pellston Workshop on TRE/TIE to update and advance the understanding of the TRE process and the science of TIE in aqueous effluents, surface water, and sediments. While the goal of the workshop was to document the various aspects of the TRE process with specific attention directed to TIE procedures, what resulted was this comprehensive guide to TRE/TIE, detailing procedures and including more than 30 case studies describing various aspects of the process. This thorough reference will help chemists, toxicologists, regulators, and regulated facilities build on existing knowledge and strategies for successful design and management of TREs and TIEs. ... Product Description

Larry King is a true-blue baseball fanatic. A lifelong love affair began the night he attended a Dodgers game at Ebbets Field as a kid in 1940s Brooklyn. That was a simpler era in our country's history, a time when tickets to a game cost fifty cents and parish priests prayed for Gil Hodges to break out of a slump. In this heartfelt valentine to America's favorite pastime, King recalls the many pleasures the game has brought him over the past sixty years. In the course of his broadcasting career King had the opportunity to meet and interview many of the legends of his youth. Jackie Robinson, Casey Stengel, Ted Williams, Leo Durocher, Stan Musial...they're all here plus many, many more. From the golden days when Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Duke Snider were all playing center field for New York teams at the same time, to the Subway Series in 2000 and the stirring first ballgame in New York after 9/11, this unique history is full of wonderful anecdotes. Friends and fellow baseball fanatics Bob Costas, Charlie Bragg and Herb Cohen have contributed essays on their love for the game, and King discusses his favorite books, movies and songs about the sport. This ode to baseball is a must for all fans and will be treasured by lovers of the game everywhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars King on King on Baseball
I listened to the audio book read by Larry King himself.Of course, he narrated the book excellently. It was entertaining on a long drive.I would not sit down and read this book during my precious leisure hours.

This book is mostly about Larry King and what a great guy he is and how many important and great figures in baseball he's known personally. It is not very much about baseball.Furthermore it has a lot of padding.E.g. Larry gives 99 reasons why baseball is better than football in a long quote from some other author. What a waste of time!I also found Larry's constant name dropping to be mildly offensive.OK, so Larry knew the great and near great and had dinner with twenty five hall of famers, was buddies with Frank Sinatra, etc. etc.I'm impressed but not surprised.Larry's intimacy with the greats results in some interesting anecdotes, but left me wondering why he has to try so hard to impress a peon like me with how many super friends he has.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true read!
You don't have to like both Larry King and Baseball to read this book. If you like just one of the two then this is a book you should read. The range of emmotions covered in this novel are, to say the least, sweeping. I highly recommend the audio version read by The King himself. This man has passion, that's all I can say. This is one of those books you cozy up to at the end of a long day. Sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in all things Larry.

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE -
Larry King tells nice recollections from his childhood about the game, and the book did capture my interest, but as I read I notices a plethora of mistakes, inaccuracies, and errors. It seems that a proofreader did not check many of the facts that Larry King recalls. It got to be somewhat comical as I read finding one mistake after the next. It's also very repetitive - and littered with phrases like, "Can you tell I like baseball," "Can you tell I love uniforms," and the like.
As I read this, I had the feeling that Larry just spoke about baseball into a tape recorder and the words were made into a hastily written book.
I expected much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Engaging, Entertaining, But Not Much Depth
As an expression of Larry King's sixty-year love affair with baseball, this would have made an enjoyable magazine article. But as a book...if you strip away the Thomas Boswell article, the slightly misquoted Terry Cashman lyrics, and the other padding, you find what seems to be the result of Larry talking into a tape recorder for a couple of hours, with all the positives and negatives that implies. There's plenty of heartfelt enthusiasm here, but little reflection or depth. And as King should know, memory can be faulty, especially with the passage of time. Take his story about his childhood fight with his friend Herbie Cohen, sparked by their position-by-position debate over which team was superior in 1947--King's Dodgers or Cohen's Yankees. As King tells it, they came to blows over who was superior at second base, where he insisted the Dodger rookie Jackie Robinson had the clear edge. The problem with that? As Cohen himself notes when he's quoted elsewhere in the book, Robinson played first base during his rookie season. (Eddie Stanky still patrolled the hot corner for the Bums; Robinson moved to second the next year, after Stanky was traded to the Boston Braves.) This is an entertaining affirmation of King's true love for the sport, but could have offered the reader a lot more.--William C. Hall

4-0 out of 5 stars An Ode to Baseball
Larry King pays homage to his favorite sport in his book "Why I Love Baseball."This book comes from one longtime fan's perspective about the game of baseball over a span of more than 50 years.

This book is filled with anecdotes from King's life relating to baseball, involving his lifelong friend Herbie Cohen, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Baltimore Orioles and their late owner Edward Bennett Williams, President George W. Bush, and many stars from the game. The book can be read by anyone who simply loves the game of baseball and is a great read for the summer.

One may not agree with every opinion and suggestion of King's, but one must respect his unremitting love for the game of baseball. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the transformations of O, but could have been ALOT better
I stumbled on this book at my local library last year and decided to check it out. Two guys who used to work behind the scenes on Oprah's show use 10 years worth (1986 to 1996) of photos to document the evolution of not only the show, but Oprah herself. Some of them have Oprah laughing it up with a celeb guest or looking pensive among her studio audience. Some make her look great (moreso the later ones), while some make her look downright scary (check the Eddie Murphy and Bruce Willis ones). I still didn't get WHY these guys decided to release this book. Inspirational quotes pepper a handful of pages, but don't do much, in my opinion. It's worth a flip through, but I wouldn't be so quick to shell out cash on it. Check for it at your library instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cultural History to treasure
What a great gift--for one's own nosalgic journey and for anyone else who will want to have a keepsake of the times and tides of our nation's preoccupations, whether with celebrities, politicians, sports figures, important 'voices' of inspiration. The pictures are captivating; the joy is infectious. It speaks volumes about how and why Oprah has led the way for a nation's curiosity and insight. It reminds us of all of the friends we've made as Oprah introduced us to who was 'happening' and how we came to open our world to all of them. Important !!

It's filled with pictures of Oprah with tons of celebrities, politicians, sports heros, authors and others. So many priceless moments from her tv career are captured on these pages. It's just like a photo album filled with pictures of your best friends and family! As I first looked thru it I realized how much Oprah has made me laugh, made me cry, made me think, made me wonder and made me happy! I'll cherish this book! Wow!

Product Description
As a talk-show host for more than four decades, Larry King has encountered the most powerful and influential people in the world. Now, in Future Talk,he converses with some of today's most provocative thinkers to get their perspectives on what's in store for us in days to come.

In this book, composed of original interviews never broadcast or published before, Larry King takes us on a tour of the future of politics, religion, the media, war and peace, money, work, travel, sports, and the arts--all from the point of view of highly regarded individuals at the top of their fields.

King has conversations with: Stephen Jay Gould on the unprecedented challenges mankind faces; Marian Wright Edelman on the risks confronting families; Tim Russert on the media and political coverage; Doris Kearns Goodwin on the talents a future president will need to succeed; Gen. John Shalikashvili on military developments; Bill Gates on how computers and the Internet will continue to permeate our lives; Richard C. Holbrooke on the challenges of world diplomacy; C. Everett Koop on the increasingly volatile relationship between government and health care; Lester Thurow on world economics and how the United States needs to position itself; Albert Berkeley on how Wall Street will play less of a central role in investors' lives; Bob Costas on how sports will grow and change, as well as how they will be covered; Maya Angelou and Peter Max on the meanings and relevance of art; Isaac Mizrahi on what we'll be wearing; Stephen Cannell on what we'll be watching; and Robert Thurman and Elaine Pagels on spirituality and what we'll be doing to nourish our souls. These and many other interviews offer comments that are candid and opinionated, optimistic and pessimistic. They will engender reflection and surprise and ultimately provide insight into what tomorrow will bring.Amazon.com Review
When Larry King calls to ask what the world will be like in the next century, you don't tell him you're too busy to talk. Even Bill Gates findsthe time to discuss the impact of e-mail on business ("The post office anddelivery companies are going to see the quantity of correspondence theydeliver fall, but at the same time they'll see the amount of merchandisethey deliver rise").

With more than 40 original interviews with people ranging from artistPeter Max to Vibe's national affairs editor Farai Chideya,King covers all the major topics, including politics, science, media, education, business, the arts, and spirituality; he even gets input onthe future of baseball from sportscaster Bob Costas and actingcommissioner Bud Selig. This book was wirtten in 1999, and after 2.5 years I saw lots of the things they said is getting real.
The book is mostly about American culture but therearesome parts which is global. And they really catch my attention.
The part that is most interesting and true is the converstaion with Richad Holbroke. His future forecast about terrorism was right. After 9/11, it became reality.
If you want to have a different point of view from experts, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Needed This Book Last year
I just had my third heart cath 5/24/2005 after another "event".
I was at THI/St. Luke's and saw this book there and read a few pages before being discharged. I saw the celebrities listed and desperately need to read their stories on dealing with Heart Disease as I am scared and frightened as Information on "me" is sketchy to say the least, from my doctors. I need better information and support. I just ordered this book and cannot wait for it to arrive. Thanks Larry and all the others who shared their personal experiences.

Product Description
In recent years, linguistics has become increasingly more willing to allow some type of representation of "meaning" in the study of language. However, most approaches deal with sentence or utterance meaning and thereby ignore the meaning of linguistic form. This study returns to the problem of form and meaning by presenting a detailed account of certain forms in Spanish which have traditionally been called grammatical forms, or grammatical categories, and associated with grammatical meaning. It is suggested that not all linguistic forms represent the same kind of "meaning", and that a subset of grammatical forms constitute a highly organized system that parallels phonology and syntax in its capacity to explain variation at the level of discourse. The book opens with an introductory chapter, which is followed by five chapters on the analysis of the Spanish verbal system. In Chapter 7 problems of the noun phrase (the meaning of determiners and grammatical number) are discussed. Chapter 8 offers an explanation of the meaning of the direct object a, and in Chapter 9 a crosslinguistic study of the semantics of Spanish and English is presented.A summary of findings is given in Chapter 10, along with a further consideration of the goals and procedures of semantic analysis. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Funny book
This book reminds me of Carl Hiassen's novels. Quirky characters, clever satirical writing.A quick read that I enjoyed very much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moon Over Manhattan
Were to start? I have never actually written a review for a book. Even if the book was bad, I figured it wasn't worth my time writing a review. This book on the other hand needs a review. I am surprised it got published. The use of the word "aforementioned" drove me up the wall. It appears on almost every single page. This is the first Larry King book I have read, and it seems that the impression it is leaving on me, it will be the last. I always finish a book that I start, but being only half way through this one, for a first, I am contemplating on setting it down...... in the bottom of the trash bin. Dont waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars shame on you larry king
I hate to adopt such a negative view on anyone's work but I wish I could give it no stars. I bought this book thinking I should read some recent authors, taking a break from the "classics". I can't imagine anyone finding this book humorous, even though that was clearly the intention. The repeated use of little gimmick phrases weren't funny the first time and soon I was unable to even bear finishing the story. Run far far away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly the Worst Book I Have Ever Read

1-0 out of 5 stars More about me than help in sales
This was a more about me book than a help in sales. Most you could not apply to how and why people buy something. Not worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the average "succeed in business"
Some of the jokes in the beginning of chapters are very funny. This is not a book for just one read through. Some chapters are all about how to start off in business, while others seem not applicable until in upper management.Although very interesting, much of the book was only applicable to those that either do not know how to start off their career, or how to become a successful manager.

If you are in sales, however, I strongly recommend this book. This book almost made me want to go into sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really happended just like the book says it did
I have to admit that I am biased as I have known Ron Shaw my entire life but setting this aside this book contains some wonderful recipes for life and business success. Ron's entrepreneurial story of survival in building a mid sized US business offers far more practical insights and executable strategies than several recent books written by Fortune 10 business executives. Not that the later are not intersting, it is just hard to translate stories from a Company that never faced a capital crisis into reality for most of us in today's economy. Also you get a great sense of the importance of community in this book. Finally, this is also not a parochial story as the author was amongst the first executives to embrace Japan in a business setting.

I get the sense that the people who founded Google read the hardcover version in 2001-2002. Well worth the read for all of us. ... Read more

Product Description
Edwin 'Bud' Shrake is one of the most intriguing literary talents to emerge from Texas. He has written vividly in fiction and nonfiction about everything from the early days of the Texas Republic to the making of the atomic bomb. His real gift has been to capture the Texas Zeitgeist. "Legendary Harper's Magazine" editor Willie Morris called Shrake's essay "Land of the Permanent Wave" one of the two best pieces Morris ever published during his tenure at the magazine. High praise, indeed, when one considers that Norman Mailer and Seymour Hersh were just two of the luminaries featured at Harper's during Morris' reign. This anthology is the first to present and explore Shrake's writing completely, including his journalism, fiction, and film work, both published and previously unpublished. The collection makes innovative use of his personal papers and letters to explore the connections between his journalism and his novels, between his life and his art. An exceptional behind-the-scenes look at his life, "Land of the Permanent Wave" reveals and reveres the life and calling of a writer whose legacy continues to influence and engage readers and writers nearly fifty years into his career. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Shrake's Short Stories
LAND OF THE PERMANENT WAVE shows that Edwin Shrake deserves his reputation as SI's great "bonus" feature writer of the 60s and 70s. Pulling together the best of Shrake's SI pieces along with sections of his novels, letters to fellow literary Texans as Larry King, and parts of his screenplays, LAND gives the reader a true feel for Shrake's first person rebelliousness wrapped around a true gift for prose that never bores.

Product Description
He can kill giants. Capture fortresses.
But can he subdue self?

At last David is king. He can defeat the Philistines. But can he resist a beautiful woman?

People of passion reach for God, burn for God. They kindle an answering passion in others. David cartwheeled in the streets at the coming of the ark. He was magnanimous to Mephibosheth. Even willing to die for his son. He was a man after God's own heart.

But when his passion got out of bounds in the matter of Bathsheba, David reaped a bitter harvest. Amnon's rape of Tamar. Absalom's murder of Amnon. Absalom's rebellion and tragic death. The numbering of Israel and the plague that killed thousands. The record reads like a soap opera--but with a happy ending.

God caused David to pass through the furnace, not to consume, but to purify. In the end he could write, "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing" (Ps. 30:11, NKJV).

May God cause your soul to dance as you plumb the God-saturated heart of the king. ... Read more
