Product Description
In the ten years since Princess Diana’s shocking and tragic death in 1997, her hold on the world’s imagination has only increased. For The People’s Princess, Larry King asked many people who knew Diana, some officially and some more personally, for their favorite memories.

Sir Richard Branson recalls Diana sitting in the cockpit of one of his private planes with baby Prince William on her lap; as they flew past Windsor Castle she announced, “On our right you have Grandma’s house!” Heather Mills, who, like Diana, has been a tireless campaigner for charitable causes, recalls Diana’s work to eradicate the scourge of land mines, as well as the time she was photographed shaking hands with an AIDS patient in a London hospital, doing so much to counteract the stigma associated with the disease at the time. British radio and television personality Chris Tarrant recalls how clearly nervous he was upon meeting Diana for the first time, and how she put him at ease with an incredibly rude joke about Kermit the Frog. Photographer Tim Graham remembers Diana lying on the floor with baby William in order to coax a smile from the young prince. And her chief bodyguard recalls how happy and at peace she seemed on the day he agreed to her simple request: to be allowed to walk, truly alone for once, along a beautiful, deserted beach.

Some of these recollections are warm and intimate, celebrating Diana for her ability to make a human connection with everyone she met, others are perceptive and revealing, even about Diana’s human failings and frailties. Together, they coalesce into a multifaceted portrait of a woman that the world has long desired to know a little better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
You know its bad when you have Barbara Eden as one of the people who pay tribute to Diana. Yes that Barbra Eden as in "I Dream of Jeannie".Did I miss something? The book's title suggests that the tributes are written by "those who knew her best" Who are these people coming out of the woodwork..Tyra Banks, Donald Trump, etc. Some of these people never even met her how can they know her best? I am a die hard Diana fan and have most of her books but I must say this one put me to sleep. Did you ever hear the expression,"I was so bored I couldn't kill myself"? Well lets just say it was that bad. Don't waste your time nor money. If you really must read this just go to the library. This has got to be the worst Diana book I have ever read.

1-0 out of 5 stars King of Cashing In on The Anniversary
Unlike the other reviewers to date, I disliked this book and found it a bid to cash in on the anniversary of Princess Diana's death. How well did Larry King - or many of those who contributed to the book - really know her?

I usually enjoy compilations and had there been more substance, this would have been no exception.Instead, I found the book shallow and barely skims the surface.Perhaps these people did know her, but after reading the book, a more appropriate title would seem to be ".... From Those Who Met Her".I wanted to like this book, but it was like going to dinner and getting only a few hors d'oeuvres.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tributes to Diana from her friends and fans from the heart
A really wonderful book--a series of tributes to the late Princess of Wales by people from all walks of life, the famous and not so famous. The tributes are from people who knew Diana and met her and some were close friends, some were from people who admired her and were inspired. Each tribute is a vignette from one paragraph to several pages summing up their impressions of Diana and their experiences. Among these are: Larry King, Donald Trump,Sarah Bradford, Heather Mills, Joan Collins, Barbara Eden, Richard Kay, Twiggy, Catherine Walker, Tessa Dahl, and Ken Wharfe. I was moved by Tessa Dahl, a contemporary of the late Princess, she wrote about the parallel lives she and the Princess led and her story was quite moving. Bravo to Heather Mills who wrote in her tribute: "Remember--monuments are not erected to those who criticize, but rather to those who have been criticized."I also liked actr Christopher Biggins tribute and agreed fully when he wrote: "The biggest mistake of her (Diana's)life was to fall in love with her husband. If she hadn't cared for him so much it would have made everything easier to deal with. I don't think anyone had ever taken her aside and explained that her husband had a mistress. She was too young and innocent..." This is a vivid book that captures the personality of Diana. I do have several quibbles but these don't detract from the excellence and spirit of this book. One is that in Joan Hanger's tribute she writes that Will Carling "admitted" having an affair with Diana. I don't recall this happening and Carling who was in the middle of a nasty divorce would not have said a word. And those who knew the late Princess deny that there ever was a physical affair. The second is that in the Timeline at the end of the book, James Hewitt is said to be the man that Diana conversed with on the Squidgy Gate tapes, it was not Hewitt but James Gilbey. The third is the rather sour "tribute" by Dickie Arbiter who seems to pay tribute a little too grudgingly. I am thankful that Joan Rivers was not asked to pay "tribute" to Diana particularly after her rather acid appraisal of Diana after she died (she was invited to Charles and Camilla's wedding and appeared on Larry King and added particularly nasty comments about Diana). This is a fantastic book, Diana fans will want to buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on the changes in national political campaigns
I just finished this book yesterday. It was light, interesting, and insightful on its subject, that is, how all-news programming (CNN) changed the way national political campaigns are run.

The change, according to King, occurred during the 1992 presidential campaign when Ross Perot was a frequent guest on "Larry King Live."It was from this exposure that Perot launched his grass roots independent campaign for President of the United States.Bill Clinton recognized the power of the medium for discussing his platform and communicating his ideas.George Bush was reluctant to seem "unpresidential" by appearing on these "weird talk shows," which added to the perception that he was "out of touch."

At the center of the changes in political campaigning sat King, an amiable interviewer if there ever was one. While criticized for not asking "hardball" questions by Mike Wallace and the like (Who?), King explains that he is not a journalist, but an interviewer.

In my opinion, this look at the 1992 presidential campaign is as useful for its insight as Carville and Matalin's "All's Fair."This is a fast read, and an inside look at the candidates in a forum where they are most exposed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much of a book
Larry recounts the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign, with all the inside information and insight that could be garnered just by reading the paper or watching TV during the relevant period. In other words, Larry offers no inside scoop at all. The book just rehashes the campaign in more or less chronological order, and I could've written it. Some book, huh? Along the way, Larry does manage to bungle a fact or 2 (E.g., claiming a wacky question during Gennifer Flowers' press conference was asked by a reporter, rather than the Howard Stern show flunkie who really asked it. I don't think Larry can bring himself to say the words "Howard Stern", so perhaps that was the problem.). If interested in the 1992 campaign/election, try ALL's FAIR by Mary Matalin and James Carville or STRANGE BEDFELLOWS by Tom Rosensteil instead.

Product Description
Yogi Berra’s dad, an immigrant from northern Italy, didn’t see the point of American sports, but taught Yogi to keep his word and always be on time. Mario Cuomo’s father seemed diminutive (“Maybe he was five foot six if his heels were not worn”), but he once led Mario and his brother in a herculean, nearly impossible effort to hoist and replant a downed 40-foot-tall blue spruce. C. Everett Koop’s dad imparted to his son the crucial difference between buying something and affording something. And from her famous father, Danny, Marlo Thomas learned the wisdom of forgiveness when he told her, “I do not hunch my back with yesterday.”

For My Dad and Me, Larry King asked more than 120 celebrated and successful people about their favorite memories of their fathers. Their recollections are rich with life lessons, large and small: Some are truly insightful and wise, some are hilarious, some are pragmatic, but each is a genuine reflection of the priceless gift of fatherhood. It’s one thing, after all, to be told about such virtues as honesty and integrity, hard work and perseverance, gentleness and strength. It’s quite another to see them living, or even sometimes faltering, within someone you love.

As warm and funny, reassuring and surprising as dads themselves, My Dad and Me not only celebrates fatherhood but also offers some candid glimpses behind the public images of well-known men and women from Donald Trump and President George H.W. Bush to Patricia Heaton and Bill Gates.

Larry King presents a moving and revealing collection of inspirational stories about fathers—and the life lessons they teach—from a host of famous men and women, including:

Chinua Achebe, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Helen Gurley Brown, President George H. W. Bush, Bob Costas, Alan Dershowitz, Phyllis Diller, Hugh Downs, Bill Gates, Ira Glass, Derek Jeter, Randy Johnson, Don Mattingly, Kevin Nealon, Kurt Russell, Bob Saget, Ryan Seacrest, Marlo Thomas, Alex Trebek, Donald Trump, Al Yankovic, And many more . . . ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Slap together book with little wisdom
Am really disappointed in the book for a variety of reasons. One, 95% of the people listed aren't well known, or have such little to say that I got the feeling this was a slap together book that was produced simply to produce monies for his cardiac foundation. So disappointed I am sending it back to Amazon.com.

The few bits of wisdom one can glean from the people in the book, is work hard, don't give up, don't lie and be nice to people on the way up because you may need them on the way down.

Am sitting here trying to figure out who the target audience for this book is?Sure cannot be the under fifty crowd since there are so few people aside from Bill Gates, Joe Perry of Aerosmith for boomers to read.Where are the Tom Hanks, Steve Jobs, the young men who founded Yahoo and Google? Oprah, Jon Stewart, Ron Howard, Mel Gibson?Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young?
Condi Rice, Tony Blair, etc?

3-0 out of 5 stars Light Father's Day Material
Over 120 successful and well-known personages were asked to relay their favorite memories of their dads for this book.Larry King's was "Don't lie," Alan Dershowitz's was "fight up, not down" (don't pick on people smaller than you), Randy Johnson's was "Do the best you can - you might not get a second chance," and Dr. Koop's was learning the difference between being able to "buy" vs. "afford" something.

Yes, there are some tidbits here and there, but it is hard to convey much in a page or less (in most instances). In any case, it is nice Father's Day material, and the proceeds go to one of Larry King's foundations for helping others. ... Read more

Product Description
More than 60 million people in the United States currently suffer from some form of heart disease. And even though the risk for the disease can be drastically reduced through changes in lifestyle and diet, the number of people with heart disease continues to grow. In an effort to reverse this deadly trend, Larry King has joined some of America's favorite celebrities from the worlds of sports, politics, journalism, music, and entertainment to reveal their highly personal stories of struggling with--and overcoming--heart disease. From the early warning signs, to the diagnosis, to the process of recovery and renewal, each celebrity reveals how he or she became a heart disease survivor.

Told in their own words, these candid accounts by some of America's most beloved celebrities offer inspiration, hope, and practical wisdom for anyone whose life has been touched by heart disease. This wise book also includes the latest advice from the celebrities' doctors--who are among the best in the world--on the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
Amazon.com Review
CNN's Larry King has written a celebrity show and tell about discovering and overcoming heart disease. Eighteen first-person accounts, including King's triple-bypass surgery, are paired with advice from expert cardiologists. Each story is used to illustrate key aspects of how to spot, diagnose and survive heart disease. "When your body and mind heal," promises the resilient King, "get ready for a hell of a ride." Journalist Mike Wallace report of his two heart surgeries while his cardiologist details the effects of slow heartbeats and how to live with a pacemaker.Actress Kate Jackson's description of her surgery to repair a hole in her heart is linked with a discussion of women and heart disease. Walter Cronkite's tale of grilling his physician before his bypass surgery is followed by five questions to ask your cardiologist. The account of Regis Philbin's reluctant angioplasty is enlarged by a description of revolutionary tests to detect heart disease.Through his careful choice of narratives and expert commentary, King describes the many faces of heart disease (from runaway rapid heartbeat to blocked arteries) as well as the heart smart strategies for survival. Even the name-dropping tidbits, (Cher calls Kate Jackson; Arnold calls Regis Philbin) and the occasional live-for-today cliches do not detract from the sensible and wide ranging advise King has collected. In our celebrity-driven culture, he is wise to tap the rich and famous to teach these life-saving truths about heart disease. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Larry King on Heart Disease
I am sure your must have heard about this author.Yes, he is THE Larry King of Larry King Live on CNN.In this book the author tells us how a couple of famous people who were suffering from heart diseases were able to conquer their conditions. It isreviewed by one of the doctors who operated Mr King. This book is just like his show and has a lot of inspirational stories.

Overall, it's a great feel-good type of book. Just like my new beverage of choice called s o y f e e. It's made from soybeans that you brew just like coffee. Caffeine-free, you'll find it at www. S oycoffe e.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with inspirational healing stories
Walter Cronkite, Peggy Fleming, and others are all sufferers from heart disease who have triumphed over their conditions: Larry King tackles the nation's number 1 killer in Taking On Heart Disease, reflecting both his own heart attack and bypass experiences and a survey of how heart disease may be confronted and avoided. Packed with inspirational healing stories, Taking On Heart Disease provides plenty of case histories of triumph and offers inspiration for recovery.

2-0 out of 5 stars More like gossip than wisdom
Talk show host Larry King's book opens with a foreword written by the surgeon who performed a bypass operation on him. Unfortunately, Mr. King's book reads more like a penance for past sins than a book about heart disease. If you need company to wallow in regret over the excesses of the American lifestyle, this may be the book for you. But if you're searching for something new about heart disease that doesn't just echo the conventional line delivered by your neighborhood family doctor or bypass surgeon, don't look in Mr. King's book.

As a man in the popular media, you'd expect Mr. King to have a sixth sense regarding what is truly newsworthy. Mr. King's book may have been newsworthy in 1980, but in 2004 it is little more than a personal catharsis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for Heart Patients and their families
Larry has done more in this book for heart patients and thir friends and families than any professional counselor could do. You read and feel the fears of well known people and you understand, through the words of their cardiologists, what has taken place. This book should be handed to every heart patient who walks into a cardiologist's office for a test or exam. ... Read more

A MONUMENT TO THE POWER OF LOVE IN THE MIDST OF A CHAOTIC WORLD

Moving and inspiring, these are the stories of men and women who met amid the chaos of the most devastating war in history and became the loves of each other’s lives. Master interviewer Larry King captures the special feeling of those times in the couples’ own words, telling tales that vary from sweet stories of love at first sight to heart-wrenching accounts of love surviving against all odds. As these couples reflect on the profound experience of the war, many speak of the deep bonds they forged during that tumultuous time, bonds so strong they lasted a lifetime.

A treasure trove of unique reminiscences, enhanced with plentiful photographs and reproductions of the letters that kept the lovers in touch no matter how many miles separated them, Love Stories of World War II offers an unprecedented view into the personal side of the World War II experience and celebrates the incredible legacy of remarkable relationships formed in a time of tragedy. As one veteran put it, “We’ve all got war stories. Some of us like to tell them, some don’t. But the story of how we fell in love with our wives, well, that’s still with us every day.” ... Read more
