Memorable Entertainment
I first saw this movie back in 1980, when I was in the Peace Corps in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.It seems to follow the standard plot line for this type of film, two brothers who don't know they're brothers.At one point they are adversaries, but upon discovering the truth, the one brother sacrifices himself for the other.However, its the musical numbers which were the memorable part of the movie.The songs were catchy and about the best I've heard from the number of "Bollywood" films I've seen.I particularly enjoyed, for lack of a better term, the bird cage number where Rekha swings above the diners in the nightclub. ... India has lost two of the three one day internationals against Australia, and have lost all hope of winning the three-test series, mostly due to the dismal performance of the arrogant Cricket Captain, Ranvir Singh alias Ronny, who is also the brother of the Chair of the Cricket Selection Committee. This Committee decides to have a new-comer named Sunny in place of Ronny, which leaves an embittered Ronny, swearing to kill Sunny at any cost. The third match is being planned in the Wankhede Stadium in Bombay, and a group of terrorists announces that they will blow the stadium up with the estimated 50,000 spectators, unless and until the Indian army withdraws it's peace-keeping force in the region. The Chair of the Selection Committee takes control as the Director General of Police; launches an investigation; and does arrest the culprits, who have been employed with the Stadium for many years. Rajesh Khanna at His Best - A Classic
Rajesh Khanna's best role by far, an award-winning performance that could easily have felt maudlin, calculated and cyncical. Instead, Khanna finds the humor and the humanity in his portrayal of a dying man who embraces life more energetically than those around him, including an embittered doctor (Amitabh Bachchan). In the process, he changes their lives even he ends his. The vital center of the movie is the growing friendship between Khanna and Bachchan, whose intensity though platonic is almost romantic and tinged with homo-eroticism. The sublimated attraction is captured in the astonishingly romantic "Meine Tere Liye Hi", sung by Khanna and directed at Bacchan. Even in the 1970s, it was clear, though rarely discussed, that there was more unresolved here than simply the tragedy of a man who doesn't deserve to die. The miracle of Khanna's performance: he nails the introverted moments of his gregarious character -- moments, almost always captured in song, that let us feel his immense struggle, sadness and, finally, existential loneliness. About halfway through Anand, the immortal "Zindagi Kaisi Hein Paheli" will have you tearful and exuberant at the same time, with more of these powerful emotions still to come.
