4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look behind the scenes in this sport
Nancy Kerrigan won hearts with her dignity and poise following her 1994 assault. It's a pity that her image has been tarnished by her sulkiness at the 1994 Games and her affair with her married agent. Ms. Kerrigan gives a frank account of her life and career and one can't help but wish her well. A fascinating story of the action in the fast-paced world of figure skating and the sacrifices made by skaters and their families.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great skating book!
Nancy does a great job filling us in on her climb to success.this book is NOT gossipy--she does not diss the other skaters (not even Tanya Harding). After reading this book I have great respect for Nancy!

3-0 out of 5 stars The ugly side of figure skating!
Until 1994, I was an avid figure skating fan. Then this whole debacle regarding Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan began. It didn't begin there. In 1992, the press particularly the american press fawned over Nancy Kerrigan like the next Dorothy Hamill. Even though, it was Kristi Yamaguchi who won the Olympic Gold Medal. Nancy and her blind mother received far more attention than Kristi and her win. Sad but true, the press treated Nancy like a princess because she was prettier than Tonya and Kristi at least to the opinion. It was no wonder that Tonya who skated and landed a triple axel something neither Kristi nor Nancy ever completed in competition was left in the dust. Then when Nancy's legally blind mother said her daughter deserved the gold in 1994, nobody pointed out that she was legally blind in the press. The 1994 Winter games also showed an ugly side to the beauty of figure skating. I saw something that I never saw before. I always thought that the figure skaters were like one big happy family but watching figure skaters like Kurt Browning, Scott Hamilton, and Peter Carruthers show their true side lost me completely to the sport. It tarnished my image. I have to say that forgiveness is not in figure skating. Thanks to Tonya's actions, all of those figure skaters became wealthy and treated her like a leper. In HOllywood, they would have easily forgiven her. I did and I still feel sorry for Tonya because Nancy has gotten everything because of her. Tonya's actions are forgiveable and I wish people would see that Tonya was herself a victim of spousal abuse. I wish Tonya best. I'm sad that figure skating has an ugly side of competition but the figure skaters could have shown some forgiveness. They tarnished their sport by being ugly human beings rather than forgiving ones.
Unlike Kerrigan or Yamaguchi, Tonya had no emotional support. Her relationship with her mother was estranged and there were accusations of child abuse which probably ring true to the person that Tonya turned out to be as an adult. She was in an abusive marriage to Jeff Gillooly who only saw dollar signs if his wife won the Olympic Gold Medal. Tonya's support system was lacking. She came out of poor working class Oregon. She had talent that she should have been a blessing instead of a curse. Her skating was the one asset that could have gotten her a better life. She made poor decisions but that doesn't excuse her but you have to understand why it happened. Of course, the Kerrigan camp could have simply called a truce and made peace before the Olympics instead they capitalized well on Kerrigan's situation as the victim. If I was in Kerrigan's shoes, I would have called a truce or cease fire rather than go to courts and allow it to go any further than ruin or tarnish the sport itself. For example, Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, is still allowed to box while Tonya is forbidden to skate. There was a lot more ugliness in the sport that surfaced during this time. It's been 14 years and it's time to let this go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive scholarly essays of superb social analysis
This book is a collection of over a dozen essays from disparate authors (mostly women) on the Harding/Kerrigan debacle of the Winter '93-'94.Its emphasis is on the Social Analysis of what may often be referenced as apreeminent U.S. feminist issue and exercise to determine the "why ithappened".As such, this book shines with countless thought provokingaspects that have references back to classic mythology and all the stuff ofa consuming dissection. It blows this big media event apart discussingevery aspect from dress colors, selected music scores to the classstandings of these two women Olympians. If you just want a superficialbook on skating, this may not be the book for you.But if you want todeconstruct the how's and why's of what makes the perverse part of humannature and society tick, with the skating included, this collection can'tbe beat.

1-0 out of 5 stars well-intentioned but off the mark
It would've been nice to read a book like this written by people who understand the sport of figure skating, rather than just an analysis of the media coverage. This was a great opportunity to examine the grit behind theglamor of the sport, and it was wasted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful dissection of class and gender roles in skating.
this collection of scholarly essays examines skating as a field byfocusing on the events leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics. The essaysare thought-provoking, and cover a wide range of topics -- from the role ofthe media in creating a spectacle of women's bodies, to an essay on theprominent role of fairy tales and fantsy in skating.Highly recommendedfor skating fans and those interested in sports culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is excellent for all Nancy Kerrigan fans
This is an excellent Nancy Kerrigan biography for the Nancy Kerrigan fan. It's worth reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get Nancy's own book instead :-)
Basically, this book won't tell you anything the media hasn't beaten to death over the past 4 years. It may have been informative when it was first published, but most people- and especially skating fans- will learn nothing new from this book.

I'd definitely recommend Nancy's own book over "Edge of Glory," which ends prior to the 1994 Olympics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast-to-Press, expanded magazine story before '94 Games.
Recall one of the first, FASTEST paperbacks to hit shelves? It was of the never expected 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey victory over the Soviet team at Lake Placid. That book was on shelves a few DAYS after the victory.Anyway, the same here with the Coffey/Bondy book: it's after the Harding attack in Detroit, but hits the book shelves before they even get to Lillehammer.Taken for it's worth, it's a good, fast paperback of an abridged bio. of Ms. Kerrigan. Her early training, family relationships, and, yup, even covers the baton attack. If your flight is over 1-1/2 hours, you'll finish before you land. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Skaters!
Nancy Kerrigan, two-time Olympic medalist, has written a book for skaters full of tips and advice that she has learned and used during her years as a Senior skater. Nancy states in the introduction, "Artistry on Ice is not focused on the early fundamentals...[it] is intended for intermediate to advanced skaters...and includes tips for sharpening their competitive skills". However, even beginners will benefit from the many tips and land and water excercises featured in the book to develop strength for skating. This book features clear instructions and full-color photographs covering nearly every aspect of intermediate and advanced skating, including all kinds of jumps, spins, essential skills like spread eagles and spirals, competition, partner skating, off-ice training, and more. Also, you will find thousands of hints and tips for performing various skating movements that have worked for Kerrigan herself. Plus, a whole section of the book is devoted to competition, covering cosutmes, music, choreography, and bringing it all together. This book is full of practical advice and will help all skaters reach for that shining star!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Guide for Figure Skaters
This book is full of useful tips for beginner and intermediate skaters. I found it to be clear and concise. The photographs illustrated specific moves well. I have been figure skating since I was a tot and am now an adult -- this book helped to clarify specific techniques which had previously been elusive. I found the chapters on other forms of skating very interesting as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautifully written
This is a very inspiring and beautifully written book. It discusses all of the obstacles that Nancy Kerrigan overcame before she gave the performances of her life at the 1994 Winter Olympics. This book and Nancy Kerrigan helped me to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. It taught me many important lessons about life. I know it may sound weird that I learned this from a sport such as figure skating, but there are many parallels between figure skating and life. In sports as well as in life, hard work and overcoming obstacles is more important than winning gold medals. As a result of winning a silver medal, Nancy taught me two important things among others: overcoming hardships is more important, significant, and much bigger than winning gold medals. By giving her the silver medal, the judges made her star shine much brighter than a gold medal. In fact, she would have made this a realization whether she had won a medal or not. What is more important is trying your best. And the second lesson is that life is sometimes unfair. She won that night in Lillehammer. To me, she is the Olympic champion(in spirit and in reality) no matter what the judges said. And she deserved the gold medal. She was robbed and so was the United States. But what really matters is what I have said above. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to have their life changed for the better. Not many books can do that.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good true story
Very moving and inspiring. I couldn't put it down. It inspired me to dream and work really hard to reach it.Nancy has amazing parents that support her in everything she did. I really respect them. The way Nancy faced everyproblem is amazing. You have to read this book. ... Read more

Excerpt: Nancy Ann Kerrigan (born October 13, 1969) is a two-time American Olympic figure skating medalist and 1993 U.S. champion. Kerrigan was born in Woburn, Massachusetts to Daniel Kerrigan and Brenda M. (Schultz) Kerrigan. She began ice skating at age six at the local rink in her hometown of Stoneham, Massachusetts. Her two older brothers, Michael and Mark, played hockey, but hockey was not considered an appropriate activity for girls at that time so she took up figure skating instead. She did not start private lessons until age eight, and won her first figure skating medal at age nine. The Kerrigan family was of modest means. Kerrigan's father, a welder, sometimes worked three jobs to fund her skating career, and also drove the ice resurfacer at the local rink in exchange for lessons. Kerrigan was coached by Theresa Martin until she was 16, then after a brief period with Denise Morrissey began working with Evy and Mary Scotvold. They remained her coaches through the rest of her competitive career. Kerrigan began to reach prominence at the national level when she placed 4th at the junior level at the 1987 U. S. Figure Skating Championships. She made an early impression as a strong jumper but was comparatively weak in compulsory figures. Kerrigan made her senior debut the following season, moving up the national rankings each year: 12th in 1988, 5th in 1989, and 4th in 1990. However, she continued to be held back by compulsory figures until they were eliminated from competitions after the 1990 season.
