Product Description

I found myself wondering what would have happened if I had said yes. . . . Would she be alive today? Would we be together? Would we be happy?

This is the story of a small-town kid who moved to the big city, fell in love with a beautiful, mysterious woman, and found himself in competition with the most eligible bachelor in the world, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Now, for the first time, Michael Bergin reveals the truth behind a life lived in the limelight and a relationship shrouded in secrecy. From his early days growing up in a small blue-collar Connecticut town, to his meteoric rise as fashion icon and television star, to the passion he shared with the enigmatic and complex Carolyn Bessette, this is an inside look at the world of beauty, power, and celebrity.

In 1992, Michael and Carolyn met in a bar in New York City. She was unlike any woman he had ever known -- sophisticated, successful, with bewitching charm and grace. An intensely passionate relationship was born. Not long after, Michael landed the coveted Calvin Klein underwear campaign, and his career took off. The future looked bright, and Carolyn and Michael seemed destined for a long and happy life together.

But it was not to be. Four years later Michael was an international fashion icon and Carolyn was Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr. -- however, the story doesn’t end there. This is the truth about their lives, a tale full of warmth, humor, heartbreak, and tragedy.

.Above all, The Other Man is a testament to the enduring power of love and a story about the painful choices we make with our all-too-human hearts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fiction!!
First, if you love someone you don't write a book about them telling negative things about them. It's ok to tell a story and explain a situation, but she was this she was that. Based on what???
Second, I don't believe the story at all. Why, because if you look at JFKs and CBKs relationship from the public eye especially in the last few months, they couldn't keep their eyes off each other, and always were so happy when they were going out.You can't fake this.Look at Di and Prince Charles. You could tell the love died there.
Third, I have always doubted the advanced drug use people claim that she did.If she did, it would show in her face and behavior. It didn't.No doubt she had a couple of persciptions, but please, if you are that big a drug user, it will show in your eyse, face and behavior.I believe the use was esculated if not made up by the media in order to lift JFK, jr up and her down.
(By the way, I have always felt that the same happened with his father. No question he was unfaithful, but I have read many books on JFK and believe that there were scores of women who claimed to have slept with him that didn't. i.e.Angie Dickenson has always claimed this. And if you read the bios of the people around JFK, she met him once at a party in DC.No doubt she wanted to.He didn't.One of his friends dropped her back at the hotel.End of story. But in her eyes, it makes her look good.)
The author is a twit!
Gee, maybe I can write a book on my relationship with Christopher Columbus and score some $$.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time
Don't waste time with hollowed-out bagel; wanna-be rich-and-famous model gets dumped by beautiful jet setter for American prince. Nothingelse happens. Not a single conversation orinterlude worth repeating. Meow is all she said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
After reading this entire book in one sitting I am heartbroken and empathetic as if the events had actually happened to me. What an unimaginable, incredible love story. Their passion made me cry. Contrary to what some ignorant people may choose to believe, this book was not written in attempt to gain publicity. But rather to quite simply convey an amazing story of unconditional, relentless love for another human being. What an amazing story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very SINCERE and very DOWN 2 EARTH =)
I remember when this book first came out and actually wanted to go pick it up. But i forgot and never got around to it. Here i am a few years after the books release and then one day Michael Bergin for some strange reason popped into my head so i decided to type in his name in on AMZ, just to see what was available in his catalog. Of course the 1st thing 2 pop up was the book & right then & there i realized that i should finally pick this up. I have the hard copy and i absolutely love it. I think Michael writes really well. Its nothing ground breaking & it's not going 2 win any Pulitzer Prize awards but it's a good book. He is very honest & candid with his relationship. I know a lot of reviews really enjoyed trashing him & just bashing him for no apparent reason. He dated the woman and has the total right to publish this book. Yes of course he got paid for writing the book but I am sure that was not his 100% reason for doing so. I feel awful that he had to go out and promote this book & get slammed by many of the people interviewing him for publishing his experience & relationship. I am sure deep down inside he probably just wanted to cry after all the negative press he received. He wrote this book & promoted it in a way defend her honor & to show "What would have happened if she was with Michael". It proposes the question "Would JFK Jr. & Carolyn still be alive if she was still with Michael"? I am sure not everything is word for word because nobody has perfect memory. There's always 3 points of view for any story and this was his. I do believe Carolyn was secretly ashamed of him because he was a door man when they initially met. I don't like the way she treated him and this was a story of a very average girl who decided to choose between being financially stable, rather then being with someone who she might have had more fun with. I remember Michael back in the 90's when he was becoming a big star. Of course fashion related things on TV have so much more exposure and dedication now then they did back then. So i heard about Michael here & there and saw his ads in New York. Of course I found Michael to be interesting & was fascinated by him. I mean how can you not be? Of course I don't have a fascination for every model. You need to have that certain something to really spark my interest. Michael is really down to earth & doesn't sugar coat anything in the book. He is also very honest that he used drugs in the beginning of the book. I feel like he wasted his time with Carolyn because i really don't see her BEAUTY at all. She is a very below average type of woman in society. But then again we always see beautiful people date unattractive people. That's how it goes. She really was down right below average. I look at her over & over and I just DO NOT GET IT!!!! Her beauty is something I do not understand at all & she needs a tan.

Also people on here BASHED this book a lot and some of them didnt even read the book. I understand you want to voice your opinion which is fine. On another note Camelot was not perfect & it never will be. Some bashers just couldnt handle what they thought was paradise actually had FLAWS!! JFK Jr. & Carolyn were anything but saints. Then again nobodies an angel anymore. Don't judge from what you see externally because it's usually just a really good mask. You never know what lies behind closed doors. Pick this book up i know you will enjoy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Intent is Questionable
After reading this book I am still confused about the author's intent. On the book cover's back flap he states, "Above all, The Other Man is a testament to the enduring power of love and a story about painful choices we make with our all-too-human hearts."I must agree with the part about painful choices because he made some painful ones when he agreed to be the other man.Why would he try to compete with John Kennedy Jr.?

I don't agree with him stating that this book is a testament of love.If so, why did he paint Carolyn Bessette Kennedy so negatively? This book trashes her image, character and morals.Michael Bergin tells of lustful sex, drugs, infidelity, lies and a possible abortion.Yes, it is his personal story of a season in his life and he has a right to tell it, but don't mislead the readers.

Despite my feeling mislead and still questioning his intent, overall the book was well put together. The book contains many full page photos, some of which validate that he did in fact know Carolyn and did some modeling.

If you are a true fan of Carolyn and/or John Kennedy Jr. this book is not for you.If you are one to have a curious nature about the lives of the above mentioned people then you will enjoy this book.

Product Description
What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a prince, Anthony Radziwill, one of a long line of Polish royals and nephew of President John F. Kennedy. Carole Radziwill's story is part fairy tale, part tragedy. She tells both with great candor and wit.

Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. She spent her childhood summers with her grandparents and an odd assortment of aunts and uncles in their poorly plumbed A-frame on the banks of a muddy creek in upstate New York.

At the age of nineteen, Carole struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy.

What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean, carrying John Kennedy, Anthony's cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole's closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. The summer of the plane crash, the four friends were meant to be cherishing Anthony's last days. Instead, Carole and Anthony mourned John and Carolyn, even as Carole planned her husband's memorial.

Carole Radziwill has an anthropologist's sensibility and a journalist's eye. She writes about families--their customs, their secrets, and their tangled intimacies-- with remarkable acuity and humanity. She explores the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention with unflinching honesty. This is a compelling story of love, loss, and, ultimately, resilience ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars "Lamb ?"
Did anyone else find the relationship between the author and Carolyn Bisset Kennedy uncomfortably odd ?The way Caroln called the author "Lamb" and "Lambie" was very strange. And two grown women giving each other matching rings inscribed with one another's name struck me as inappropriate and rather disturbing. I got the feeling throughout the book that perhaps the two women were attracted to each other in more than just a friendship manner. Overall, this book gave me too much information on what should be considered privateand not to be published details on the lives of the people involved. Would the author have been "invited" to attend the final hours of Jackie Kennedy's life if her family and friends had known that this book would be published with the details of how Jackie looked on her deathbed? I think not. And how would JFK,Jr. and his wife have felt if this book had been published when they were alive ? There is a reason why this book did not receive the description of an "authorized" story. I truly believe in the saying "never speak evil of the dead." Writing this book was a betrayal of a family's confidences. I am very troubled by the fact that the author waited until her main subjects were dead to write her book. In other words, they ere not alive to refute anything written about them. To me, that fact speaks volumes.

4-0 out of 5 stars What remains for us?
I found this book to be very well written and real.I can't believe all the bad reviews. How can one person judge another person's life?It is a sad book but this is real life not a fairytale. What I liked was John Jr., Nick Radziwill and all the people written about in the book were real people. They laughed they cried and they ate at Wendy's.I have to admit I was bored in the beginning of the story, but whose life is really that fascinating when we are young.I think anyone who could judge someone else's grief and say the book is worthy of one star, isa very non caring and judgmental person. The only regret I had in the story is I don't know how Carole the author is today.Read this true story of love and loss it will touch you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A unique, articulate and respectful window on a desolate time
"What Remains" is a dignified and well-written effort by a person whose personal knowledge of and affection for John f. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette provide a unique portrait of these two that stands in vivid contrast to their tabloid doppelgangers.

The author and her husband, the late Anthony Radziwill, were by happenstance the very first members of the Kennedy and Bessette families to learn of the disappearance and, over the nightmarish interval that followed, the probable and then certain deaths of J.F.K. Jr. and his wife and sister-in-law.Her recounting of that experience -- told not just from the perspective of a relative by marriage, but from that of a close friend -- is compelling.Any who find themselves still in thrall to the "Kennedy mystique" and looking for a fresh window on it, will find this book worth the purchase price.

Many readers here have expressed disappointment with the sadly incomplete picture of Anthony Radziwill that emerges in the pages of this book.I will hope to see a good biography of Mr. Radziwill become available at some point. He clearly was a person whose deep reserves of courage bespoke depth of character, eclipsed in the eyes of the world by the flashier gifts bestowed by fate upon his cousin John.Although the author leaves us wishing for a warmer and deeper tribute to her husband, she deserves credit for candor about the feelings experienced by those who must cope with a spouse's lingering terminal illness. In the meantime, I don't share some reviewers' mystification as to what Anthony Radziwill saw in Carole DiFalco: she looks like a young, caramel-blonde version of Sophia Loren :-)

As for the curious, near-total absence of any mention of Anthony's remarkable mother and sister, Lee and Tina Radziwill, one can only assume that the author feels little affection for the former, as the handful of very brief mentions she receives are not complimentary.Tina Radziwill's absence from the narrative is bewildering, but since it is clear from the author's notes that she was aware of the project, it seems likely that she requested to be spared the spotlight.

I strongly recommend this book to those interested in the Kennedy saga.
