Product Description
Drawing on his unprecedented access to Grace Kelly, bestselling biographer Donald Spoto at last offers an intimate, honest, and authoritative portrait of one of Hollywood’s legendary actresses.

In just seven years–from 1950 through 1956–Grace Kelly embarked on a whirlwind career that included roles in eleven movies. From the principled Amy Fowler Kane in High Noon to the thrill-seeking Frances Stevens of To Catch a Thief, Grace established herself as one of Hollywood’s most talented actresses and iconic beauties. Her astonishing career lasted until her retirement at age twenty-six, when she withdrew from stage and screen to marry a European monarch and became a modern, working princess and mother.

Based on never-before-published or quoted interviews with Grace and those conducted over many years with her friends and colleagues–from costars James Stewart and Cary Grant to director Alfred Hitchcock–as well as many documents disclosed by her children for the first time, acclaimed biographer Donald Spoto explores the transformation of a convent schoolgirl to New York model, successful television actress, Oscar-winning movie star, and beloved royal.

As the princess requested, Spoto waited twenty-five years after her death to write this biography. Now, with honesty and insight, High Society reveals the truth of Grace Kelly’s personal life, the men she loved, the men she didn’t, and what lay behind the façade of her fairy-tale life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made a nice Christmas gift!
My mother loves to read bios on the older movie stars and always liked Grace Kelly, so this was a perfect gift. She has read it once and is starting over again. Grace Kelly was a magical person in my mother's generation, so she has enjoyed remembering her life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tells you nothing about the life of Grace Kelly--don't bother
I'm very glad I read this for free from the library. There is nothing about Grace Kelly here that we didnt' already know from the newspaper articles from her death.I would be surprised if Mr. Spoto interviewed anyone who knew the Princess.
I did not need to know every boring detail about the plots and filming of her movies. The woman was royalty, but you would never know from this book if she participated in any palace activities or even met other royalty.I was interested in her life, her cares, children, aspirations and relationships. Don't look for any of that here, you will not find it.This is only the very superficial information

1-0 out of 5 stars High Society
Thisis a thorough examination of the professional life of Grace Kelly. There is little new information concerning her private life, and the one flaw I would consider is the rehashing of the plot lines of each film.I wished for more details about the star herself.I did read it in two sittings, which says much about the talented author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting take on Princess Grace
I have probably read most of the books written on Grace ever since her untimely death in 1982.I never expected to read new information but within these pages I found much. It's well written with details that intrigue.Interesting takes on the plot lines of her movies and what she hoped to accomplish with her career as she undertook each role.

This is a must read for any Princess Grace fan.I found many of her ideas and actions completely understandable, making a lot of sense in view of some of the many accusations that have been made since her death. It was believable and real to comprehend her marriage, her wishes for her lost career in Hollywood and yet her desires as a mother and wife.It was a treat to read and absorb.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Spoto's usual standard
Celebrity biographies are one of my favorite junk foods. Genre writing often means bad prose or poor research, and celebrity bios are often the worst offenders. Donald Spoto usually has been an exception, with meticulous research and well reasoned debunking of the kind of scandal that often sells the lesser of these books. Unfortunately, "High Society" appears to be a "clip job" and an instance of Spoto being a little too close to his subject. The book seems to draw a lot on leftovers from Spoto's past research on Alfred Hitchcock and his films. Spoto admits to a great deal of closeness with Kelly and he seems over eager to give her life and talent too many benefits of the doubt. Kelly's reign as princess gets a relatively short shrift. OTOH, the book does a good job of debunking myths about Kelly and her family, who were comfortable lace curtain Irish, rather than up from the bootstraps laborers and provides depth regarding her career and her lack of love for Hollywood, as well as her usually under appreciated stage work. The book plausibly (most of the time) debunks a number of Kelly's purported affairs without assuming that she had been virginal before marrying Prince Ranier. Spoto highlights Kelly's place in the realm of "cool blonds", although he is too Hitchcock-centric in his consideration of this now forgotten kind of mid-century elegance and sophistication (in contrast to "dumb blonds" like those played by Marilyn Monroe and imitators like Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren), that Kelly helped Americanize. The "cool blonds" later included television performers like Inger Stevens (who was Clairol's pitch woman for blond hair coloring) and the persona brushed off on Doris Day's later still-virginal roles and the later years of Donna Reed's television character. The counter culture and changing styles had more to do with the demise of the "cool blond" than Hitchcock's failure to find another as perfect as Grace Kelly. So, on balance, the book is a quick and mostly pleasant read, but one that pulls punches, is uneven in its analysis and seems particularly weak with regard to Kelly's later years. ... Read more

Grace Kelly—whose cool, blond beauty defined the aloof sexiness of the classic Hitchcock heroine—left a lasting impression on Hollywood and the world. Although her career was brief, she lit up the screen in films like High Society, Rear Window, and The Country Girl, for which she won an Oscar. She was not only a fine actress, great beauty, and icon of American style, but she was also a passionate philanthropist, known for her generosity and kindness. This ambitious photographic biography with 160 images shows it all—capturing the early years, film career, royal marriage, and private life of this remarkable woman. 2-0 out of 5 stars Never Judge a Book by its Cover
Sad to say, but the cover of this poorly organized, rather thin volume, is the best part.

Consider the subject, one of the most beautiful women ever, whose qualities of an easy yet over-whelming sensuality, a stop a clock (or a man's heart) beauty, a legendary leading lady of Hollywood, is hardly reflected in this book.

The photographs are poorly organized and even worse, poorly cropped. At times, the blank page takes up more room than the subject. This book is hardly worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of beautiful pictures, I love this book!
The pictures are very beautiful.Grace Kelly was very photogenic, and I have yet to see any bad pics. It's hard to find too many picture books of her, but this one does her the most justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graceful and elegant
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in the size of this addition to the "Life in Pictures" series (my own fault for not reading the dimensions before buying). The other "Life in Pictures" books I have purchased have been large, oversized productions that bring to life the lives of their subjects by way of extravagantly sized photos with captions in a comfortable font. The print in this book is literally 1/16th of an inch tall. Also, it is very oddly arranged. The photos skip around the Princess' life in a haphazard manner. The arrangement made no sense to me, and I would have preferred a chronological order.

That said, the scope of the photos is expansive in its inclusion of many private photos of the Princess and her family, as well as gorgeous portraits, unposed snapshots, and film stills. As a result of this book, I feel as though I know Princess Grace more intimately than ever before. The biographical section at the beginning of the book is a good overview of many of the important events of her life, and there are many quotes included, both by Princess Grace and about her.But the main story here is the pictures, which encompass so many of the moments, both private and public, of her life.

Overall, this comprehensive collection is a wonderful look at the life of Princess Grace.Although it is a bit small in size for a book primarily telling a story through pictures, I believe most will be satisfied with the scope of the photos included.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE GREAT BOOK!
This is one of my favorite books. A must have for all Grace Kelly fans. The pictures are beautiful and it tells the story of Grace and Rainer. This is ONE GREAT BOOK!

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy it if you want to complete a collection
My wife is a Grace Kelly fan. I tend to buy her any book I come across about Princess Grace. I feel that this is a good book to add to a collection of Princess Grace books but it is not the definitive book on Grace Kelly.

This book is authorized by the Grimaldi family and as compared to other books it has the feel of prior restraint. The closeness with the family gives us pictures cannot be found in other books; however the text adds nothing to the life of the Princess. It feels that the authors had censored themselves.I was not looking for a tabloid account but perhaps a more realistic account would have been better.

A lot has been said about inaccurate facts, typographical errors, and editorial gaffes. I still believe despite all of its shortcomings that this is a book worth buying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is the best book that you can get on Grace Kelly. As it was produced under the aegis of the royal family of Monaco, the quality is superb. The one drawback is that it is more pictures than text; however, it is photography of an incredible richness & mostly full page in size. For more information, get one of the standard biographies, such as the excellent "Grace" by Robert Lacey(He exposes her somewhat unmercifully, but that is fine, since she was such a private individual as to appear almost plastic & characterless to an outside world).

To those who choose not to look much beyond outward appearances, you couldn't do much better than Princess Grace. Perhaps she was a somewhat shallow individual...but you have to admit at least one thing: This lady certainly looked like a princess should - that's more than you can say about Camilla Parker-Bowles of England, UK. We can all be proud that Grace was an American, & showed the world what a real fairy-book princess could be like!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever
The best book on Grace Kelly that I own.

This is a book that was prepared as a companion piece to an exhibit covering Grace Kelly's life. So much of her life was saved for posterity, and each piece displayed here was not just saved because it was her's, but because of a story associated with it, mainly about other famous people who called Grace "friend".

The photography is spectacular. This museum quality book contains the most photographs of Grace grouped together between two covers than I have ever seen before, along with some pictures that I had not seen before. The print production values are practically perfect. This is a sturdy piece, constructed to stand the test of time, something Grace Kelly is very likely to easily achieve. She helped modernize Hollywood's idea of what a smart, educated, beautiful, blond, classy lady was.

This is a book about a movie star famous for a smoking, sensual sexuality, who reinvented herself in a way not even attainable to a Madonna by marrying a prince, and becoming herself a princess. Together, Rainier and Grace brought a kingdom caught in the grip of decay, decadence, nearly bankrupt, and turned the whole thing around - all before she died at a very early age.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Pictures
Just to let you know, this book is mostly photographs of Grace Kelly and very little in the way of biography. I would take a look at this AFTER or WHILE reading her bio. if that is what you're wanting.

The pictures are beautiful. Many feature her clothing and some others, her scrapbook from earlier years. Some are taken by rather famous people; some are posters of her movies promoted in other countries as well as the U.S.Most are of her while several are of her family. Some photos are lifesize copies of correspondence from famous people in her life.

There are none of her funeral! Odd.

5-0 out of 5 stars S U M P T U O U S !.!A,,,R O Y A L,,,B O O K,,,,I N D E E D,.!
I read in other reviews here that this is the Official Guide of the Princess Grace Exhibit in Monte Carlo. It is deservedly so.It has SO MANY pictures of Princess Grace -- both in her movie career, and as Princess of Monaco. The book has heft and weight,,,a true "coffee table" book, if ever there was one! There are wonderful pictures from the Kelly Family Album, of Grace as a child, pictures of the print advertisements she did, whilst working as a model, (though from a wealthy family, Grace Kelly preferred to pay her own way, whilst studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. The AMDA, by the way, does NOT allow any student to act in a speaking role, of any kind, whilst a student at the Academy...so Grace took on modeling jobs.)Various telling quotations, and actual letters, (both type-written and hand-written), from those who knew her best, and from Grace Kelly herself, are featured, as are many full page portraits, some of her without makeup of any kind, (she still looks regally radiant!)

The "Hollywood" part of Grace Kelly's life takes up slightly less than half the book. The rest is devoted to her life as Princess Grace of Monaco. Her telling quote about Rainier give insight into their relationship: "When I married Prince Rainier, I married the man and not what he represented or what he was.I fell in love with him without giving thought to anything else."When Princess Grace's life is described as a "fairy tale come true", it has ALL the elements! This quite is given a full page, as is a double-portrait of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. Interestingly, (and unlike any other royal portrait of it's kind I have ever seen), the two of them, are seen in PROFILE, one behind the other -- but the Ruler, (Rainier), is BEHIND his consort, (Grace), showing perhaps, how much he loved her, as well!

Informal family portraits, with Grace, Rainier, and their children, formal and informal portraits of the Princess, her clothes, her jewels, and photos of various formal and informal occasions, (wherein are also seen other leading characters of this era -- such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Charles de Gaulke, and Pope John Paul I, amongst others, are also seen.
(One small correction, if I may: on page 227, Princess Grace is shown to be pictured with "Queen Irene of Greece".Her Royal Highness Princess Irene of Greece is a gracious and accomplished personage -- but was always a Princess, and not -- to my knowledge anyway -- ever a Queen of Greece.)There are only two other (minor) criticisms I have of this book: 1) It is, perhaps of necessity, VERY heavy, (weighing at least four pounds), and 2) The captions of the photos -- though wonderfully revealing, are written in very small print.Perhaps this was done so that the photos, not the captions, should be the focus of a reader's attention....but still, as many of Grace's growing legion of admirers are, sadly, coming up in years, (and I'm one of them), the captions, I feel, should have been in even slightly bigger print....

These small criticisms, however, do not dampen my enthusiasm at all for this otherwise perfect book -- nor would they stop me from recommending it to any other admirer of Her Serene Highness!SO much wonder is inside this book! For instance.......

A detailed picture of the gold-and-pink suit which Grace Kelly wore for the civil marriage ceremony, (which preceeded the religious ceremony, and during which, she officially became a Princess), is shown -- along with a formal portrait of Grace wearing the elegant outfit.Covers of magazines, (from "Paris Match" to "Good Housekeeping"), featuring Princess Grace, (sometimes shown with a very happy Prince Rainier), are shown on one page.

Towards the back of the book, are descriptions of the various rooms in the Princess Grace Exhibit, (of, as I have said, this volume is the official guidebook). Described are, the "Philadelphia Room", "New York Room", "Hollywood Room", "Hitchcock Room", "First Meeting Room", "Weddingf Room", "Ballroom", "Room of Friends", "Princess Room",
"Nursery and Family Room", "Private Garden Room", "Secret Woman Room",
"Glamour Room", "Patron of the Arts Room". and "Royal Room".On the page facing these last two rooms is a intriguing portrait of Princess Grace, in profile, looking out at the New York City skyline at night. It was taken by another multi-faceted, multi-talented, and intelligent woman: Gina Lollobrigita.

Further towards the back of the book, is an excerpt from the book, "La Veritable Grace de Monaco", by Editions Pygmalion. giving excerpts from various chapters, and an overview of Princess Grace's life.A two page spread follows -- a thoughtful portrait of a mature Princess Grace -- on whom the passing years have left barely a mark -- staring out of a latticed window, with a grand piano on her other side.Princess Grace truly wished to return to acting, (and did, in fact, appear in several documentaries, as herself) -- but the pull of the fact that she was now a Princess, not only of Monaco, but of the Catholic Church itself, plus the desires of the people of Monaco that their princess be a princess only, and not an actress -- kept her from doing so.Yes, she did have a fairy-tale life...but in her life, as in those of most people, sacrifices had to be made to make it as it should be.

A filmography of Grace Kelly follows, and after that, notes on the personal letters shown in the book.Lastly, there is a bibliography, and an index.

It is a tribute indeed, to all those who produced this sumptuous book, that it is SO inclusive of every aspect of the life of Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco. From a family photo of her at two, with her brother Jack and sister Margaret, through a photo of her on the cover of a booklet, "25 Typing Shortcuts", and some very "Marilyn Monroesque" photos of Grace in 1955, (taken, in fact, by Milton H. Greene, who took similiar photos of Ms. Monroe), through extreme close-up pictures of the various dresses Princess Grace wore through the years, through family pictures, and formal portraits, great events and small....all are here, described and pictured in the greatest of details.

This is the penultimate Princess Grace book -- as well it should be.It is a treat for those fortunate enough to read it.And it is a tribute to those who created it -- most especially, the woman who lived it, Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco.

Product Description

One of the most admired women in the world, Grace Kelly (1929–1982) is remembered for her beauty, poise, and style. Her “fairy-tale” wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was one of the most celebrated of the century. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, this lovely book tells the story behind her wedding gown, cap, veil, shoes, and prayer book—all given by the new princess to the Philadelphia Museum of Art shortly after the ceremony.

Philadelphia-born Grace Kelly rocketed to Hollywood stardom, becoming a major box-office draw and winning an Academy Award. She also was an icon of classic American style, which became known as the “Grace Kelly Look.” After examining the development of the star’s on- and off-screen style, the book focuses on her magnificent wedding dress, designed by Helen Rose and made by MGM Studios under top secret security. Public interest in the star’s wedding dress was intense, and it remains one of the most popular objects in the Museum’s collection.

Stunning color images detail the wedding dress, accessories, and attendants’ dresses, which are also owned by the Museum. Numerous historical photographs illustrate the actress’s career, style, and famous wedding in Monaco.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing book about a wedding dress . . .
An unparalleled delight for anyone who loves fabric, design or wedding gowns in general, let alone admirers of this particular wedding gown.

In light of the modern trend of strapless, sometimes even sheer midriff or plunging neckline (good grief, where is the taste!), wedding gowns, the covered-up sophistication and elegance of Grace Kelly's wedding gown may not appeal to some.Yet of all the wedding gowns created for celebrities or royalty, Grace Kelly's gown is both the most beautiful and the most exquisitely suited to the personality of the bride (two runners-up that come to mind are Sarah Ferguson's [the Duchess of York] and Caroline Kennedy's [Schlossberg]).

The deaths of Helen Rose and Princess Grace deprive H. Kristina Haugland of the primary sources of colorful minutia about the dress, and yet the author nevertheless puts together a meticulous and fascinating analysis of the manner in which the famous dress was fabricated.(I was particularly captivated by the explanations of the laces and fabrics.)

Those who sew and design will be enthralled--and the average reader amazed--by the unusual and 'most fearfully and wonderfully' conceived construction of the gown and its underpinnings. The photography is excellent (including the crucial rear view of the dress) and the book even includes diagrams of the various layers of the gown and how the various parts fastened together.(My single disappointment was that there was no recent photograph of the bodice's lace piecing-but that has to be a minor point in light of the excellence of this book.)The remarkable coverage of the visual appeal of the wedding does not stop with the gown, for great attention is given to all Ms. Kelly's wedding apparel as well as her attendants' outfits.

The book concludes with the tale of the afterlife of the gown in the hands of the museum, and in the process recounts the evolution of conservation knowledge and its application to this fragile bit of social history.

5-0 out of 5 stars just what i needed!
i love this book.however that is to be expected as grace kelly's wedding gown is my absolute ideal.this book not only has great background information, but it has some wonderful shots with details i can't find online.it also explains all the layers, how it's worn, construction, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meticulous research!
Grace Kelly: Icon of Style ... is a wonderful book.Very well researched and complete, scholarly in fact, but also extremely readable. The author has a direct and elegant writing style. And the images are fantastic. If you love Grace Kelly you have to have this book.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful princess Grace
A bride figure of really beautiful Grace.
The photograph which photographed her is splendid. Various articles used at the time of marriage are carried.
This is a precious document.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the True "Princess Grace Wedding" afficionado!
I, for one, think that Grace Kelly was the epitome of the most beautiful, elegant brides of the modern edge...even to Princess Diana..that dress and the work that went into it is mindblowing. I've seen the dress in person and it TRULY is BREATHTAKINGLY stunning! The lace, alone, in this modern age (although no longer available) would be over $10K ALONE! I plan to copy some of Grace's elegance in my very own wedding...a Rose Point Lace garter, the beautiful Juliet Cap...all I can say is this: It's not a Grace Kelly Bio--this is strictly dedicated to the dress and it's making: fabrics and laces used and how they were all put together. Truly and informative book besides being a wonderful reference as well as a Keepsake. At LEAST 5 stars on this. Check it out..you won't be disappointed! ... Read more

This book, "A Touch of Grace -- How To Be A Princess, The Grace Kelly Way", by Cindy De La Hose, could easily be called "The Grace Kelly Finishing School-In-A-Book", or "The Big-Little Book of Grace Kelly."I truly believe, that, had Grace Kelly NOT become an actress, and NOT become a Princess, that she probably would have used her money to open up a finishing school for under-priviledged girls, (and boys), so that they, too, could have the social graces and advantages that would help them in life. This book outlines, (with topic headings, examples from Grace's life, and many, many, many wonderful photos, a summation of Grace's philosophies of life: what she believed, and how she acted on those beliefs. It is a small, though thick book, (5 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 1' thick), and thus also earns the title, "The Big-Little Book of Grace Kelly".It packs a lot into a small space. It doesn't show everything about Grace Kelly's life, (for instance, she once left a famous New York City restaurant, when that restaurant would not allow the Black entertainer, Josephine Baker, to enter its premises, and she did come back, several times, to Hollywood, to see old friends, taking her children with her to see what her former life had been like) -- but there is definitely enough here to at least begin to grasp what went on inside the head and mind of Grace Kelly, both before and after she became a Princess. For anyone wanting to emulate Grace Kelly and her way of life, this book shows there is a lot of hard work one must do to do this! The very real Princess Grace, (like the fictional heroine, 'Dagney Taggert', of Ayn Rand's 'The Fountainhead'), was quite definitely, "as delicate as a steel spring -- and as strong as one."Beneath the classic, almost icy beauty of Grace Kelly/Princess Grace, was a warm, fun-loving woman, with dedication to many old values, (motherhood, breast-feeding, a belief in no sex before marriage, strong family ties, etc.), a devotion to the Catholic Church, (with which she agreed completely -- except for rhe still-controversial opinion that she thought it might be better if priests could marry, that a husband-and-wife-team could do so much good), but who also quite definitely thought for herself, and was an indpendent individualist, (coming from a rich family, she could easily have become a society matron -- but she chose not only an acting career, but to support herself, whilst she studied it, without using any of her parents' money).

In this book, main characteristics and ideas are written in large, pink script, with examples given below in text. These "lessons" are highlighted/made easier to grasp, by the many copious illustrations throughout the volume. For instance, in the chapter:
WORK ETHICS, MAKE IT A JOB WELL DONE, the Main Ideas, (written in large, Pink Script), are as follows:

Accept accolades graciously
Be pragmatic
Work well with others
Take the good with the bad
Choose your battles

This particular chapter encompasses 25 pages!Along with the explanations and exmples in Grace's life, for each of the above characteristics, and numerous, mostly in-colour photographs, are
telling quotes from others about her character.Page 111, (opposite a picture of Grace wearing a sari, with the caption: "Experimenting with an exotic look. She was a great subject, and photographers and makeup artists enjoyed trying out different things with her"), are four quotes, one of which runs as follows:

"Grace doesn't throw everything at you in the first five
seconds. Some girls give you everything they've got all at
once, and there it is.But Grace is like a kaleidoscope: one
twist, and you've got a whole new fascet."
- George Seaton, director of "The Country Girl".

The pictures. The quotations. The ideals, the traits, and their explanations,This book LOOKS to be just another pretty picture book about Grace Kelly/ Princess Grace. But if you look deeply within it, you will find it is actually a very well-presented, and delightfully easy-to-read, yet extremely penetrating book about the inner CHARACTER of Princess Grace/ Grace Kelly. There was far more to this regal, yet fun-loving woman than met the eye.The same is true for this book.It may seem like pretty fluff. But it is actually a very penetrating view into the mind-set, and heart-set, of Princess Grace/ Grace Kelly.

Highly recommended!!!!

I am 26 years old & don't know much about old Hollywood Stars. I only know that Princess Grace Kelly was: A princess----TOO cool, what girl does not want to be royalty? Product Description
The top female box-office star of 1954, Grace Kelly's status as icon takes in an 11-film, three-year, screen career and a glamorous later life as Princess of Monaco. More than any other star, she was in three memorable films the quintessential Hitchcock blonde, delineating traits of cool beauty, depths of hidden passion, intelligence, playfulness, and style - in short, the qualities that led biographer James Spada to call her "the pious man's Marilyn." Yet Grace Kelly also showed her versatility and won her acting honors for playing against type in the title role in the grimly realistic movie "The Country Girl". Grace Kelly was a classic beauty, a public figure, and serious actress representative of an era. "The Movie Icon" series: People talk about Hollywood glamour, about studios that had more stars than there are in heaven, about actors who weren't actors but were icons. Other people talk about these things, TASCHEN shows you. "Movie Icons" is a series of photo books that feature the most famous personalities in the history of cinema. These 192-page books are visual biographies of the stars. For each title, series editor Paul Duncan has painstaking selected approximately 150 high quality enigmatic and sumptuous portraits, colorful posters and lobby cards, rare film stills, and previously unpublished candid photos showing the stars as they really are. These images are accompanied by concise introductory essays by leading film writers; each book also includes a chronology, a filmography, and a bibliography, and is peppered with apposite quotes from the movies and from life. ... MOST BOOKS....ESPECIALLY MOST BOOKS ABOUT THE MOVIES, ARE MUCH LARGER THAN THIS ONE.IN SIZE, (LENGTH X HEIGHT).This book, ("Movie Icons - Grace Kelly", published by Taschen, edited by Paul Duncan. with text by Glen Hopp, and photos from the Kobol Collection), is smaller in it's height and width, ( ) -- but has 192 pages, all of fine quality photo paper, and brimming with many, many photos, and a very informative text.Like all the books in the "Movie Icons" series, (and there are so many wonderful ones to choose from!), this smaller page size enables the publishers to bring more photos to the reader, at a lower price, and to add a just about the best binding I have seen in any paper-back book to date! Also, this nice small, (but not too small size), makes it lighter amd easier to carry, (and so look through more often!), than larger, more luxurious, (and more expensive!) books!Nothing except size has been in the least stinted on here...it is truly a neat, easily-carried little book, with a full compliment of some of Grace Kelly's most memorable photos, on-screen and off.

This is a truly international book.Taschen, the publisher. has offices in Hong Kong, Kolin, (Berlin?), London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Paris and Tokyo. Each picture in the book has a caption -- in English, in German, and in French! So -- along with learning more about Grace Kelly/Princess Grace, you can also learn a few words of another language, (or two!) whilst perusing these pages!

The photos here ARE wonderful.(If this and the other "Movie Icons" books were sized more like other books, it probably would command at least three times the price!)The introductory essay, "Grace Kelly: Cool Beauty", is repeated in all three languages -- each prefaced by a different picture of Ms. Kelly!A "Visual Filmography", of black-and-white and colour pictures follows....with at least 10 stills, (pictures), from each film. The captions are informative -- and sometimes give surprising information to the reader just getting acquainted with the details of Ms. Kelly's life.(For instance, there is a full-page still
of Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner in "Mogambo".Grace's character is the wide-eyed innocent, looking up curiously at Ms. Gardner's obviously worldly, blase character. One would think these two characters came from different planets, not just different backgrounds, (Ms. Gardner came from an extremely poor family). But the caption says that, after working together, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly became life-long friends! The actresses did -- their characters in "Mogambo" sure didn't!Though it has been said that Grace Kelly chose her parts carefully, knowing her range of acting was NOT unlimited, this still from "Mogambo" shows that, within a limited range, or not within a limited range, (and the role for whch she won her Oscar, "The Country Girl", showed just how great a range of emotions she did have on-screen!), Ms. Kelly could emote in a totally believable manner!

On pages 116-120, is an interesting reprint of an article, "Home Town Report on Grace Kelly", by Patty de Roulf. The source is not given -- but it seems to be from a Sunday supplement of either a Philadelphia, or a national newspaper or magazine. It gives a picture of the young Grace Kelly, growing up like most normal American kids, (only a little richer).Pictures of her family, and high school friends are in this article as well -- and one is fascinated by it.Along with everything else, is a full-page, full-colour portrait of Grace, smiling happily at the camera, wearing jeans and being barefoot, sitting on a rock in a local forest or park, fishing with a twig fishing-pole!(Naturally, her hair is perfectly coiffed, and her blouse has a paisley print -- but you can still tell that she is truly enjoying herself -- or else she would probably have insisted on being photographed in more citified surroundings!)Sadly, when page 120 is reached, the article says, "Please turn to Page 67"....but the balance of the article is missing.I guess it is really lost -- else I'm sure it would have been printed here.

There are two especially delightful and natural pictures from the set of "To Catch A Theif".One, in full colour, shows Alfred Hitchcock and Grace on the bottom steps of what seems a grand hotel. Mr. Hitchcock is looking at Grace -- in full 18th century ballgown wardrobe for the ball scene -- and Grace...despite the elegance of her attire, is looking past him, her mouth open, and she seems to be saying something like: "Hey...we were promised food here an hour ago!" to a person off the picture, while Mr. Hitchcock looks on, somewhat in amusement, but much more in admiration. The other, in black & white, shows Grace giving Mr. Hitchcock a haircut, whilst wearing the same ballgown -- as smiles play about both their faces, and that of an onlooker, (the real barber?) in the background.

A still from "High Society", (one of 14), shows Grace hand-in-hand with
Frank Sinatra. Her character is trying to learn from his character....and Grace, looking at Mr. Sinatra, seems to know she, as an
actress, can learn much from him.....

Towards the end are two pictures of Grace as Princess. One, shows a back (inside) view of Rainier and Grace, waving from the palace balcony. The other is a picture of Grace, self-assured, in the latest coutour hat.

On page 55 is a full-page colour portrait taken in 1954, for "Dial M For Murder".Grace's hair here is parted in the center in this picture, and she her hairstyle is one reminiscent of the style still worn by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.Her expression in this picture, (reflecting the character she plays in "Dial M For Murder" -- and which is also reprinted on the back cover of this book), is hopeful, young, slightly naive, but looking confidently to the future. The caption for this picture is: Judy Quine, friend: 'Grace made the actual woman of the 1950s into a vision of glamour.'Perhaps this is the essense of Grace Kelly's magic.Though her neigbourhood, growing up, WAS a wealthy one, most American admirers can still relate to her as "the girl next door".Though classically beautiful, she still has the aura of the "hometown girl who made good".Aristocratic, but never snooty, always kind and gracious, (and MEANING it), her warm heart, and cool beauty, are an American, and perhaps, a world ideal.I read once that, when asked when she was young, what she wanted to be in later life, her reply was, "NOT to be a housewife!"Presaging the "Woman's Lib" movement by decades, this statement is immensely telling.Grace -- like the lyrics in the song made famous by her friend, Frank Sinatra -- "did it MY way".Grace could have stayed in Philadelphia, and been a proper and secure member of society there. She chose to become an actress. When she married Prince Rainier in 1956, no commoner of recent memory had ever married into any royal European family.
She was at first snubbed by many members of European royalty -- but her own true royal-like nature soon won them over.Regal, yet "regular", beauiful, yet not haughty....THESE are the the qualities which still endear us to Princess Grace today -- and probably always will.

This book, "MOVIE ICONS -- GRACE KELLY", is full of fascinating photos documenting her life, on screen and off. They also -- if you look at several of them closely -- will show you the type of person that she was.
Not without faults...but still, truly exemplary!

GRACE KELLY PAPER DOLLS, is another excellent entry in Tom Tierney's
wondrous series for Dover Books!(Is he related to the late actress, Gene Tierney, I wonder?)As in all the other books, Mr. Tierney, uses a delightful technique -- which I wonder that other paper-doll book authors hadn't come upon sooner. By putting his paper dolls in a position with arms close to the sides, he is able to design his doll clothes, (which each come with, not just clothes, but arms, legs, heads, hats -- everything except a face!), in differing arm and leg positions!
(If someone were to design a paper doll of you -- or me -- and had our arms behind our backs, the CLOTHES, (including arms and legs) for this paper doll could still be seen from a front view, and even a bit further apart!)I haven't seen any other paper dolls & clothes using this technique....but then, it's been about 30 years since I bought other paper doll books, before I discovered Tom Tierney!

The clothes here are a fine selection of what Grace Kelly -- later Princess Grace -- wore in her movies, and in real life.As seen on the cover, there are THREE POSES -- and therefore, three paper dolls -- in this book. One, (with head looking straight at you), is for the younger Grace.First is shown an outfit from "The Torch Bearers", a play written by Grace's Uncle George Kelly, and in which she made her stage debut in Philadelphia. Also on this page is the first "Grace" paper doll, and a suit modeled by Grace, whilst she was still studying acting, (and working as a model to pay the bills.Who designed this suit?In one of the few faults I find with this book, the designer here
is NOT given), There are 12 "head on" or "looking straight at you" dresses, ending with the gown Grace Kelly wore when she accepted her Academy Award, for "The Country Girl".(And yes, one of the dresses in this section is one of those she wore in this movie.)

Next is a paper doll of Grace, with her body turned, and her face looking towards the right, in 3/4 view.Strangely, though she wears a black bathing suit here, and a white bathing suit in the previous paper doll, the second paper doll shows a slimmer figure than that of the first.(Also, for some unaccountable reason, she is smiling broadly in the first paper doll, but has a wary -- though still somewhat friendly -- look in the second doll.Five beautiful costumes from her later movies are here -- along with the dress she wore to the Cannes Film Festival, (where she first met Prince Rainier), and, as well, the shimmering gold-and pink suit she wore for the pre-religious civil marriage ceremony, her spectacular, yet demure wedding gown and veil.A full stand-up paper doll of Prince Rainier, in wedding uniform, is also introduced and included here, and it can be used with the two additional outfits shown for the Prince in this section. One interesting page shows fashions that Grace and Rainier wore on their 1967 summer vacation...and their three children are shown by their sides!

The last section shows a more mature Princess Grace looking, and standing, slightly to the left. The smile has happily returned to Grace's face, and, to his credit, Mr. Tierney shows the Princess not in a bathing suit, on this paper doll, but in the plain, yet stylish and
appealing shirtwaist dress, that she wore for a TV special, commenting on her uncle's, (George Kelly's) plays.Yes, by this time, Grace's figure had (slightly), matured -- but the following fashions, all worn by the Princess in her sadly, cut-too-short later years, seem truly to show that her weight gain was far, far slighter than most women of her age.Not only that, but these fashions show how to camoflage any weight gain, at any age! They are all as beautiful as those in the former sections -- except, to me, the last one given. It is of a black silk pant suit, luxuriously cut, with much material, and with rouching and a pin at the neck.As evening pants-suits go, I guess it's not too bad -- but I have never been in favour of any woman wearing pants if it's not necessary.I like the freedom that wearing a dress -- any dress -- gives one's legs. And any dress seems more feminine to traditionalist me, than any pants or trousers.Perhaps Princess Grace was more adventurous in her choice of clothes than I am -- and perhaps it was colder that evening than I first realized! Still, seeing a Princess in pants -- unless she is from Morocco, (like the present Princess Muna) or other places, where such dress is traditional and customary -- seems to make romantic and royalist me, at least, somewhat disappointed. However, this outfit WAS what Princess Grace chose to wear to her, (sadly), last party, given in her honour in 1982.It is an historic outfit.,...so I am glad it was included!

Of course, SO many other beautiful outfits were worn by Princess Grace. In "The Swan" alone, (the one Grace Kelly movie I have so far been able to save up to acquire), she wears several -- including a 1910 lady's fencing practice-costume.The ball-gown, (included in this booklet), is surely the highlight costume of this movie....but I would truly like to see others as well.

Maybe it's just me.I can't seem to get enough of the beauty, style, and grace that was Princess Grace,The selection here is a wonderful -- touching on all the highlights of Princess Grace's life -- in plays, in films, and in real life.I hope a second volume will be made, as well!
Princess Grace's outfits -- like the legendary beauty herself, with legendary talent, kindness and good-will -- will go on as long as beauty, talent, kindness, and good-will are valued.(Which, I hope, will be forever!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Grace
Having seen many of Grace Kelly's films I was delighted when Tom Tierney released this book. The illustrations are of the high standard one has grown to expect from this artist.
Grace Kelly's Hollywood career is thoroughly covered with costumes from each of her important films.
I felt, however that the glamor of her life after marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco isn't reflected by the selection of costumes.Even the evening gowns look dowdy.
Another reason I didn't give this book 4 stars is that some of the costumes are not the right color (eg the organdie dress form "High Society", the wedding dress, etc).

This was a good book with wonderful costumes. ... Read more

small but still a nice collection of works.perhaps a bit expensive for such a small book, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely prayers from many traditions
This is a beautiful book of table graces and other prayers taken from many traditions ranging from Christian, Jewish, Native American, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islam among others. The prayers not only include grace before meals but touch on other topics such as a prayer of thanks on rising to a new day, a prayer before starting a chore, praise for creation, prayers for peace.I especially liked the prayer that deal with Advent as it expresses such longing: "Come, Lord Jesus! Come stay with my family and friends....Come, Lord Jesus! Bring peace to our world." And one to our Earth Mother that acknowledges gratitude for sunlight, rain, friends, and the "giveaway of the lives of chicken, beets...grains and lettuce that we may continue our lives."There also are traditional Celtic prayers that ask for God's presence in all of life's activities:"God in my speaking, God in my thinking....God in my life....God in my heart" as well as "Deep peace of the shining star to you, Deep peace of the running wave to you...."The book also contains a prayer about God as "I am:" admonishing us to live in the moment rather than regretting the past and fearing the future. There even is the traditional benediction used in both Jewish and Christian traditions, "The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you...."I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a collection of prayers dealing with a number of topics from a variety of different faith traditions.I can assure you that you will treasure this small but rich volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars A ground-breaking book about Grace
James Spada was the first Grace Kelly biographer to reveal that she was anything but "the girl in the white gloves" that the Hollywood myth machine insisted she was. Every other Grace biographer since owes him a debt. Spada's interviews with Grace's sisters, a niece, and several former lovers paint a sympathetic picture of a yong woman torn between conflicting loyalties and conflicting ideas of propriety. She was in many ways a libertine, but always she felt guilty because of her strictly Catholic upbringing. After she finally got free of her restrictive parents, she married a man whoseposition and lifestyle restricted her even more. In many ways Grace Kelly seemed a one-dimensional figure before Spada wrote his book. You'll never think of her in that way again.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Love Lives of a Princess"?
James Spada aspires to create a shattering and shocking biography of the late Princess Grace Grimaldi, nee Grace Kelly. Unfortunately his biography reads less like a biography than like a listing of the affairs and miserable times she had.

It covers the background that Grace Kelly came from, and her rapid ascent into the Hollywood spotlight, where she became an adored and talented actress. She won the hearts of the public anew when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco, helped pull his small principality back into the spotlight -- and died tragically in a car crash at a relatively young age.

Spada certainly had the material for a good book in his hands, but like many other so-called biographers of famous and beloved personages, he descends to essentially repeating every little tabloid report and insinuation. Every one of Grace's lovers is listed, with Spada showing especial glee when the man in question was married. Literally half the book is taken up by descriptions of who she slept with and, very briefly, the movies she made. After reading this book, readers will be hard-put to remember the plots of her movies, but they will be able to remember her mother's argument with Oleg Cassini. Additionally, the only interactions in her life in Monaco that he focuses on are negative; one would think that Grace didn't have a satisfying five seconds after she married Rainier.

Similar treatment is given to her family. Rainier is a nebulous presence at best -- what little we hear is never enough to let us form a real picture of him as a person. Virtually no attention is paid to Caroline's role as First Lady, but plenty is paid to her tempestuous love life. Albert's adult life is summed up in a listing of his lovers, and Stephanie's accomplishments are crammed into a page and a half, in comparison to the pages dedicated to rebellion and, yes, her love life. To add insult to this amalgation of tabloid rumors, Spada even presents the assertion of a tabloid stringer that Grace's death was an attempted murder/suicide.

His writing style is dry and rushed. It is also repetitive; he often restates items such as the fiery personality under the ice queen exterior, or Grace's beauty, or how she only became involved with men if she believed they would marry her. Rather than grouping relevant quotes together, he allows them to crop up at random through the book.

For a better look at Grace's life, her flaws and gifts, and the lives of her family, try "Royal House of Monaco." If you're looking for a pointless listing of Grace's lovers, this is the book for you. ... Read more

Product Description
Cori Kirk's FINDING GRACE IN MONACO is an authentic documentation of the author's extraordinary spiritual quest, and the unforeseen turn of events that led to her becoming an unofficial "princess" in Monaco. Kirk shares with readers the intricate workings of royalty from a non-journalistic position in her first-hand account of living amongst the royal family of Monaco. Struggling with personal losses - financial ruin, divorce and raising her young child in Victoria, Kirk took a leap of faith and escaped to Monaco in search of work.

Soon after her arrival in Monaco Kirk formed a personal bond with Prince Louis de Polignac, who was Prince Albert's godfather, Prince Rainier's cousin and Princess Grace's confidant during her reign in Monaco.

"The day after my arrival, Price Louis de Polignac approached me in the Hotel de Paris spa, and then swiftly swept me behind the closed doors of his powerful world of aristocracy where Prince Rainier, Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie reign, and where Princess Grace's ghostly presence still lingers," explains Kirk. "Monaco is a tiny country where few become privy to the inner resources of the Grimaldi family, except by invitation." FINDING GRACE IN MONACO discloses how Price Louis de Polignac took Kirk into his confidence and became her guardian and fairy godfather while he imperially "groomed" her to be the bride for Prince Albert.

"Prince Albert and I had an ongoing, private and intimate relationship and he strongly urged me to move to Monaco," says Kirk. "Arrangements were made for me to live there permanently but I chose not to make Monaco my permanent residence and returned to Victoria."

Kirk's account of living a princess' lifestyle promises to leave readers with a unique perspective of the "happily-ever-after" fairytale. She shares a distinct point of view that is intriguing and informative. Above all, Kirk tells a story of courage and gratitude in the face of tragedy. She tells how she traveled her spiritual path with divine guidance under atypical circumstances to re-establish her state of grace in Monaco. 3-0 out of 5 stars Quick read, but so-so
Great quick read about the beautiful Grace Kelly, althought I feel like the author uses it to highlight her own life and opinions...almost to the point of disrespecting a successful beautiful woman/actress/Princess.If you want something more true to the Princess, pick another book. This was more like Grace Kelly 90210 if you get my drift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a look
This is an interesting book about a very interesting lady.
Ms Quine has an intimate view of one of the most famous marriages of the past century. She writes eloquently of a time past, where women lived to be married, and the progression to the modern day where most of the bridesmaids had shed those essential husbands.
Ms Quine has an easy to read writing style and you can whip through this book.
My only criticism is that the book focuses far too much on Ms Quine. She seems to have a very high opinion of herself, and while others may have found reading about her interesting, I did not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Writing .... Interesting Perspective
It has been a long time since I first read this book, (1994) - however, this biography of Grace Kelly is one that forever stands out in my mind as a great portrayal of the princess and actress.
Quine writes of Grace as only a best friend can. She shows Grace Kelly in good times and sad times, exploring her emotions and her fears and overall, portrays the princess as a real human being. I couldn't help but feel that as I read this book Quine was letting me into Grace Kelly's life a little more than she should, and by the time I finished this book, I felt I knew more about Grace Kelly than ever the media could allow me to. I felt literally, like one of Grace Kelly's friends or even a confidant. That is how close Quine brings you to this legendary person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and unusual
It's an absorbing and different kind of story, this tale of six girls, best friends, of The Lsst of the Hollywood Glamour Girls (Grace Kelly), who were bridesmaids in Ms. Kelly's Royal Wedding. There's more to the book, however, because it's a book about women who grew up believing they would find their Prince and live happily ever after someday -- and didn't.

Whether the bride did or not remains a matter of conjecture, although the impression here is that Grace Kelly Rainier's married life really wasn't all that terrific after all.

The book is opinionated to the point of being offensive. The author solves problems and gives advice to all who would listen. Her voice is strident but her story is compelling. I enjoyed the book, although I certainly do not agree with her perception of the women of her day. (I am one, after all, and I can speak with the authority of personal experience.)

3-0 out of 5 stars All about Judy.
Ms. Quine, a long-standing friend of the late Princess Grace of Monaco, did a fine job of relating all the details of Grace's engagement and marriage; in fact, I felt that I was right there alongside her and Grace throughout all the proceedings. I simply couldn't have gotten a more detailed or accurate account of one of the greatest weddings of the 20th century.

What turned me off was that Ms. Quine spent way too much time discussing her own life: Her father's head-honcho job at a movie studio; her family's wealth and status; her own numerous, tumultuous marriages; her personal problems; and her errant children. She might as well have made this an autobiography! For those of you who don't know much about the details of Grace Kelly's life, you'll most certainly know less about her than you will about the author after you finish reading this book. ... Grace Kelly is pretty as a princess, and actually became one the year this paper doll book came out 1956. Illustrated by Florence Sarah Winship, the book originally had six pages of great 1950s fashions. But in this reprint, we are pleased to offer two additional pages of clothes by David Wolfe, including movie costumes and Grace's wedding dress. There are two dolls to dress in the eight pages of lovely clothes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
after buying the book I was quite disappointed as the outfits seem all jumbled up on the pages I was looking for the cut out dolls
and then the penny dropped the dolls are on the front and back covers of the book, which is not good.
I buy these paper dolls as a collector but if I was using them cutting up the covers of a book would not be an option
drawings are good but just not what i expected. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and full of errors
I am a big fan of Grace Kelly/Princess Grace and have read many books on her life.
This particular book seems as if it was written by a grade schooler for an English class. There are numerous grammer and spelling errors.
As well the book is rife with silly errors about Grace. For example Mr Noa insists that Princess Grace's favorite perfume was called Fleurissimp. Fleurissismp? Try Fleruissimo. Just one example of many in this poorly written book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tribute
What I found most appealing about Mr. Noa's book is that it tells the story of Grace and Diana through its various themes in a candid, yet respectful way.
Of all the books written about these two extraordinary women, who were so loved, is that both the flamboyant and spiritual side of each princess is told along with their problems.
I found it a very good read and feel Mr. Noa captured each character with a very smooth style. I recommend it to all fans of either of these two great ladies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those who loved Grace and Diana
In my first national radio interview, outstanding talk host Jordan Rich of WBZ AM 1030 Boston said, "Two Princeses is a terrific book and it was a pleasure for me to have Mr. Noa introduce it to my audience".

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique & refreshing perspective!
Forget what you've read in the tabloids. In this respectful and sensitively written book, Kevin Noa has masterfully chronicled the spiritual and humanitarian natures of two of the most famous women of the 20th century. In addition, for the first time, the reader will see the almost-eerie similarities in Diana and Grace's lives, and their deaths. Without ignoring the unpleasant parts of their lives, Noa casts off the luridness of other accounts, allowing these women's spiritual natures their well-earned place in history.

If you are a fan of either princess, this is a must-add to your collection. If you've never read anything else about these two women, read this book first for the true and UNTAINTED stories of their lives. ... Read more
