Product Description
The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, brought to a sudden end my happy, carefree, post college years in Honolulu. I found myself on duty that morning in the laboratory of The Queen's Hospital with only a Japanese aide for a helper. This book tells the story of the major changes that took place during the twenty-four years I spent in the Islands. My marriage to a naval officer engineer took us after the war to the Island of Maui, where we lived first in a rain forest and then on a sugar plantation.

2-0 out of 5 stars A highly readable account of one woman's life in the Hawaiian Islands.
It reads easily, save for a few editorial glitches, where the same information is repeated. Ms. Thomas writes of the years 1938-1962 from a highly personal viewpoint. Her narrative shares her early dating experiences prior to WW II with diverse young military officers, and the various places she went with them. Except for the "Day of Infamy", the war years breeze right by, marked with her marriage to an engineer in 1945. From there, they go to sugar plantation life on Maui. There family life is recounted in great detail, e.g. gardens, guest lists, visitors, her children's activities, etc. Sparse historic background is ever included in her narrative, save for bits and pieces here/there--the strongest being on the basic methods of sugar cane farming. This is, instead, a high-resolution look at her everyday life.Since I was interested in regionwide dynamics during those years, I found this book unsuitable because of the tiny canvas Ms. Thomas painted upon. Others might view it differently. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A child's perception of a father's drinking and recovery
This illustrated book is told from the elementary school aged daughter's point of view. It describes her reactions to her alcoholic father's mood swings and erratic behavior. When he is drunk and loud, she perceives him as a frightening "giant."

She is present when family and friends arrange a supportive confrontation. The father's family and friends each tell him how his drinking has affected them. Finally the girl tells her father how his drinking affects her. Her words along with those of the others present break down the father's denial. He is then able to realize that he needs to enter residential treatment.

When he returns from the treatment, he is on the road to sobriety. He takes the loving yet painful step of apologizing to his daughter for his past behavior.

This book takes a more optimistic view of a parent's drinking than does "I Wish Daddy Didn't Drink So Much." I liked the way the book so vividly the girl's view of the frightening "giant" father. The book would be useful for children who are dealing with a parent in early recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. It would also be a good read for an alcoholic of drug addicted parent who was contemplating recovery. It would also help a recovering parent who is struggling to find the words to make amends to a child.

I did have a concern about to depiction of the little girl in the confrontation session. Confrontations can be a powerful way of getting an addict into treatment. However, such a meeting is intense and it might not be appropriate for a small child to attend. I would not want a child to mistakenly feel that he or she has the power or responsibility to get the parent to stop drinking. Parents or professionals should read this book with the child and make sure that the child understands this point. ... Read more

It was a simple ordinary day for Cass Kennedy when his family was forced to move to North Minnesota. He never wished to be alive. His new house was very nice. He really liked that it snowed there everyday, and he missed school a lot. Cass loved to visit Lake Superior often. Cass loved to play football near the lake. His house was close to a forest, and the forest was called Indian Deep. One day Cass went into the forest, and he heard strange sounds. He saw a boat's emergency lights on.What could he do with his dog in the middle of a blizzard, and he was the only one around to help the survivors? This book was an exciting and thrilling adventure. You should buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars History brought to life
The world of pre-Elizabethan England is vivid and engaging in this tale of one girl caught up in life-and-death circumstances created by power struggles she'd known little of before. Though captive to the dire situation in which she finds herself, Iris's sense of agency keeps her from succumbing to the forces that would seek to destroy her or simply use her as a decoy. She is cunning, smart and appealing and I was compelled to keep turning the page, as I cared about her fate. A highly enjoyable way to learn more about England's somewhat confusing royal history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl as spy
I loved this fast-paced tale of a young girl in just-pre-Elizabethan England. From the moment this book starts, danger and intrigue follow Iris, daughter of a nobleman who is caught up in the power struggles to gain the throne of England. Reluctantly recruited to portray the Princess Elizabeth so the princess may remain safe, Iris is pulled into the court and finds the life distasteful. She wants to be at home with the people on her parents' estate, living life in the country, and instead she must risk her life for a young woman who is destined to be the Queen of England. Grounded in history, with plenty of action and humor and a touch of romance, this is a terrific choice for the tween girls in your life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of short stories by some very good writers
The common theme of this collection of short stories is the future of washington. Some of these stories are very good and some very good writers like Kim Stanley Robinson, L. Neil Smith, and Joe Haldeman contributed to this effort.
There is a lot of variety and a lot of imagination in these stories. Something for just about everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clarification
The story "The Day of the RFIDs," alluded to in the Daniel Miller review as a highlight of the FUTURE WASHINGTON collection, was actually written by Edward M. Lerner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected it to be
I was kind of disappointed with this book, honestly--the stories are very hit-or-miss.The best one is by Kim Stanley Robinson, but it's an excerpt from a novel, not written for this collection--probably better to just read the novel.Another highlight is by Cory Doctorow, exploring the use of RFID tags and the Dept. of Homeland Security, although I felt like going up to him and whispering "Your ideology is showing".As for the others, some of them are amusing (particularly one near the end in which Democrats and Republicans have devolved into warring tribes--it reads like it was co-written by David Broder and Hunter S. Thompson), but only a few make a serious attempt at exploring an interesting future.More common are relatively shallow attempts at parody, such as one story in which Indiana real estate agents plant a nuclear bomb in DC and exploit the chaos to move the capital to Fort Wayne.Overall, the book doesn't have enough worthwhile material to make it worth buying.Check it out of a library for a few of the stories, but don't waste your time or your cash.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is there a future for Washington DC ?
Future Washington contains 16 stories from a variety of authors most usually not found in anthologies. The stories posit many different futures for the DC but most are dark and distopian in one way or another.

"Primate in the Forest" by Kim Stanley Robinson, "Hothouse" by Thomas Harlan, "Civil Disobedience" by Joe Haldeman, all have the area suffering from one degree of global warming or another as background.

"Ignition" by Jack McDevitt gives us an idea of what can happen with fundamental religion take over. Paranoia takes over a computer geek in Edward M. Lerner's "The Day of the RFIDs" but is he really that paranoid?

Jane Lindskold in "Tgers in the Capitol" has the original designer of the capitol area who is not all that happy with what was done with his designs. "Hallowe'en Party" by Nancy Jane Moore is basically directions and instructions for a future party in the DC area (the directions are only slightly off from those you'd get if you lived in this security conscious area now).

"Agenda" by Travis Taylor, "A Well-Dressed Fear" by B.A. Chepaities, "The Lone and Level Sands" by L. Neil Smith, "Hail to the Chief" by Allen M. Steele, and "The Empire of the Willing" by Sean McMullen, all deal with politics and intrigue on one level or another.

"Mr. Zmith Goes to Washington" by Steven Sawicki has my favorite aliens (from sfrevu.com's Damned Aliens Column) drop in for a Senate Hearing. "Indiana Wants Me" by Brenda W. Clough gives a look at what could happen to the DC area if Congress moved elsewhere. "Human Readable" by Cory Doctorow deals with the concept of who has access to IT and will it be economic status blind."Shopping at the Mall" by James Alan Gardner give us a view of what would happen if Americans just disappeared one day.

All in all, there are stories to make you laugh out loud, shake your head in frustration, dispair, and agreement. Those that make you think maybe you should pay just a bit more attention to what are leaders are doing FOR/TO us in DC.Every story is strong with character, place, and plot. It's a good buy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Awe-Inspiring Chase But a Little Light on Character
Book Club Review
THE FACE-CHANGERS
Thomas Perry

Our book club's book for May was THE FACE-CHANGERS, a Jane Whitefield novel by Thomas Perry. For those who have not read Perry before, Jane Whitefield is a Native American "guide" whose job is to help people (usually innocent people accused of crimes they didn't commit) disappear, to move "off the grid."Her job is always made much more challenging by the fact that by the time she gets involved in any particular "case," the person she's helping to save is already in a lot of trouble with the bad guys closing fast.

We chose this book because we wanted to try something with a Native American/American Indian theme, but we didn't want to read Tony Hillerman. Not that we don't like him, but we've all ready several books by him and we wanted to try something different. Some of us had read earlier books in this series and recommended them enthusiastically, which is how we came to this book.

In THE FACE-CHANGERS, Jane has tried to "retire"; she is now the wife of a respected doctor and she wants to get out of the danger business. But she's pulled back in by a surprising source--her own husband, whose mentor in medical school is now falsely accused of murder and is on the run from the law, because he has been framed.Unable to say no to her husband, Jane jumps into the case with mastery.

To say more would be moving into spoiler territory, because the plot is quite intricate and involved many twists and turns as Jane tries to stay a step ahead of the "bad guys," while also finding herself saving another unwitting victim from some truly unscrupulous thugs.

The joy of reading this book is in the really exquisite detail of Jane's brilliant mind...how she observes every situation, tries to stay a step or two ahead, outwit someone, or pull off a scam of her own, all with the goal of keeping her charges safe.Jane is like a Harry Houdini, and what makes the book such a fascinating read is that her exploits don't strain credibility. There's action, and a fast pace, but you never think, "Oh, come on, this is ridiculous."That's because Perry has so perfectly plotted everything out.As a group, we were highly impressed by this aspect of the book..."awed" might even be a better word.

There are just a few small caveats.Though labeled a "novel of suspense" -- and it is very suspenseful -- this is not a book that you can read quickly or breeze through.Because the detail of the escape arts is so intricate, you really do have to read every line, every paragraph; as a result the book seems to paradoxically move suspensefully but slowly. Also, Jane herself, while a provocative character, is not explored in much depth if at all.She is absolutely a master at what she does, and she is devoted to her craft and to the people she protects, but we don't really get to know much about her.So, really, as good as THE FACE-CHANGERS is, it can't be said that the book has deep characterization or a heroine you come to "love."We all admired Jane, without exception; it's just that she's really hard to get a handle on as a character.(Perhaps there is more about her history or her backstory in earlier novels; this is the first Perry book I read. Some other members said they remember the earlier books being the same way, with Jane always formidable but never quite developed fully.)

We all felt that we would like to read more by Thomas Perry. He has written several excellent non-series books, too, so I personally may try one of those before going to another Jane Whitefield book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read, well-crafted, although with many coincidences.
This was my first Thomas Perry book, but it won't be my last.It is one of a series that feature Jane Whitefield, a person who helps people disappear.

The story's development depends on several coincidences, which normally bothers me, but somehow the story was so interesting that I "got over" this.I can only hope that Perry's other books are as good as this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protector of the Innocent
Jane Whitefield is a marvelous addition to the pantheon of females defending the good guys and defeating the bad guys. Her persona as a spiritual guide creates a twist that is novel and fascinating. Her super-hero powers are pretty good, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A highly original protagonist
Jane Whitefield, half-Seneca "guide" who takes in hand those who, for various reasons, need to disappear, and finds ways for them to escape into the cracks in American society, is naturally secretive about her occupation. Those who need to find her do it through rumor and word-of-mouth. But now someone else presenting herself as "Jane" seems to be encroaching on her territory -- and fleecing the helpless, and often killing them as well. One of these, a renowned surgeon who trained Jane's new husband, has been set up and didn't quite make it to Jane's door before being wounded by the police, and Carey -- who got his wife to promise she would give up the guide business -- has asked her to help his old teacher, to do what she's so good at just one last time. Jane takes on the job not only for him but because she has to save her own semi-secret reputation -- only this time, the FBI is also involved. This fourth novel in the series is rather better than the last two, showcasing the author's knack for constructing an intriguing and believable back-story and introducing Special Agent Marshall, a thinking man's Fed, whom I think is likely to show up again.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Face Changers
Thomas Perry is a fine writer and his novels are very well-constructed.I think the conceit of an Indian woman who knows how to make people in danger 'disappear' is clever, and his explanations of just how she does it are always interesting and believable.Jane Whitfield is not, however, an entirely believable character. She is just too good: she is never petty or venal or self-indulgent or anything but wise, judicious, strong and virtuous. Thomas Perry makes up for that with his intelligent prose, intricate plotting and his wit.Altogether worth reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed for class
Not too much to say; it is the book I needed for class and I got it at a good price on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!
This is a wonderful book for any first responder to have.
It is very easy to use because not only does it come with on and off scene procedures, but it also has quick reference tables and charts. On a scale of 1 to 5 I give it a 10!

3-0 out of 5 stars Tries to be all things...
and falls short.Jane's Chem-Bio Handbook is much improved over the freebie notepad version they gave out a few years back, but it suffers from a lack of focus. The small size, spiral binding, and tabs suggest it is intended as a first responder or incident commander handbook, but occasional topical discourses suggest that it is meant as a textbook. As a result, it is hard to find the information that would be needed on the scene (an index helps, but only slightly), while the coverage of the various topics is too uneven for it to be a good text.In some places, it seems to be simply a compilation of information from various (US) field manuals.

There are some good ideas, but they seem to be sabotaged by the execution. The checklist version of the "Agent Indicator Matrix" (based on the Defense Protective Service model) is a good idea, but it is spread over three pages (instead of being arranged to fit on two facing pages in a landscape presentation or provided as a foldout) so that it can neither be copied easily or used easily in the book.A section on the threat of stolen military munitions, after noting that stockpiles in other countries are not as well secured as those in the US, then proceeds to a description of US weapons without describing distinguishing characteristics of chemical munitions relative to conventional munitions or how the munitions described might relate to foreign munitions.

There are also some surprising errors in the hodgepodge of facts. The volume I purchased indicates that it is from the sixth printing, so I have to presume that most typos have been corrected. One particularly egregious error is in the characterization of liquid phosgene as "...not hazardous except as a source of vapor." This statement is highlighted in a little box with a finger pointing at it on page 106, and repeated on page 108.While certainly it is the vapor that kills, liquid phosgene splashed into the eyes is known to produce opacification.Subsequently, it is stated that "Phosgene [vapor] does not damage the eyes or skin..." Yet it is well known that concentrated phosgene vapor will irritate both the skin and eyes, and, while this would not be fatal, and is usually not permanent the downplaying of these risks is certainly inappropriate, to put it mildly.

To try to close on a positive note, this book does have some good information salted in various odd spots. If you are responsible for a training program, it would be a good book for you to look at, provided it is not the only reference you use.The table of emergency decontamination materials found at a K-Mart, for instance, suggests an obvious bit of homework for your trainees.

In summary, this handbook should not be your first or only purchase, but it probably has a place in a comprehensive library. Given the reputation of Jane's, a bit more proofreading would have been in order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jane's Chem-Bio Handbook: A useful tool
Among those involved with the planning and implementation of specialized, multi-casualty incident response, this book is quite useful.Field personnel, command staff, and planners - all will find it helpful.I foundit to be concise, packable, and physically handy.About the only thing I'dchange would be to laminate the pages for weather resistance.

R.D. Lopez,Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Specialist, Dept. of Public Health

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, portable,multi-purpose
This book offers a concise overview of (1) on scene procedures such as triage and decontamination, (2) general characteristics of weapon classes, (3) details of specific agents, and (4) treatments. It also describesprecursor chemicals and 4 case histories. It is better written and moredetailed than the comparable book "First responder chem-biohandbook". ... Read more

Product Description
1908. In Two Volumes. With numerous illustrations. This volume contains the correspondence between Thomas Carlyle, the Scottish-born British historian and essayist who was a leading figure in the Victorian era and Jane Welsh before they married. Theirs was not an easy courtship. In 1823, she wrote to him: Your Friend I will be, your truest most devoted friend, while I breathe the breath of life; but your wife! never never! Not though you were as rich as Croesus, as honored and renowned as you yet shall be. Carlyle replied two days later: You love me as a sister, and will not wed: I love you in all possible senses of the world, and will not wed, any more than you. Does this reassure you? Alfred Lord Tennyson once defended their marriage, saying that By any other arrangement, four people would have been unhappy instead of two. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good buy to save money
Bought this book for a college class...can't say I read very much of it, so it was worth not spending as much as the university's bookstore wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
The book took a while but it was in great shape and definately cheaper than if I bought it at my college's bookstore.

1-0 out of 5 stars I have not recieved My book!!!!!!!!
I ordered my book on January 24th. Today is February 24th, and I still have not recieved my book. My experience shopping with Woody's books has been a great let down!! I hope that my recent contact with the company has helped in the correction of the situation,as I really need the title ordered. Unfortunately, I was unable to leave the stars blank, which I wanted to do, so as far as a rating thus far, zero stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good...
I think this textbook is put together nicely. It has many "real" examples of actual elementary students' work. This is helpful when you are learning how to teach elementary students mathematics. I have to say this text didn't get 5 stars because it has a few unusual questions at the end of some of the sections. Some in particular are almost impossible to solve, too lengthy to solve or are just ridiculous. Even my teacher was baffled at some of them. Anyways, all of that aside this is a pretty good book with great ways to teach elementary students math. ... Read more
